Scarlet Forest

Summary:

While praying to the godly creators, Black Forest's devotion is finally rewarded. After so long dreaming of Them, a young witch arrives to offer his hand to her, promising exactly what she wanted. But while she is busy trying to be the perfect bride, his eyes are set on Earthbread and it's secrets. His bride, only a means to an end. A tool to help scour the lands and the traces of witchcraft within.
That's what they both tell themselves. But reality tends to be a lot messier than one thinks.

Notes:

This is an AU involving my oc, Sanguimancer Cookie, who is similar to the First cookies in concept.

Chapter 1: Oh Blessed Day

Chapter Text

Black Forest Cookie stood before the altar, quietly reciting her prayers to the witches. The words spoken with soft reverence, but her mind elsewhere. As was often the case, she found herself thinking of…them.

Oh, how they would be the perfect bride on their return! The wedding planned by Wedding Cake Cookie was practically divine~! Even if their beloved hadn’t shown before her brothers and sisters interrupted. Mother Reverend Cookie scolded her carelessness in exposing The Order so much upon her return, but Black Forest cared little. For such was the happiest day of her life. Her daydreams of the day to come only strengthened by the rehearsal done that day.

Black Forest let out a dreamy sigh, her prayers momentarily forgotten. Holding the bouquet she had gotten from Wedding Cake that day. A treasure. A promise of the joy to come, when the night she had plays out in truth.

“My, my~ such devotion, my dear~. And we have yet to meet!”

The unknown voice shook Black Forest from her thoughts. She looked around, but she was alone in the chapel. As she turned her gaze back to the altar, she found a figure upon it. Or rather, a silver image of one. Not a cookie, but something similar. With a wide brimmed hat, a long cloak, and a sly smile on his face.

They had finally arrived.

“After that whole wedding rehearsal, why…I just HAD to make an appearance.” The figure dropped from the altar, holding a hand just under Black Forest’s chin. “I hope I haven’t been keeping you waiting too long~”

Black Forest practically melted at the words. “I would wait for all of time if I needed to~. My sisters didn’t believe a witch would ever come.” Black Forest tried to place her hand on the figure’s arm, only for it to phase through. She held it just above, mimicking the intended gesture. “But I always had faith. In the creators. In you.

The figure’s smile changed slightly. Still sly but with a hint of…pity? “oh, my dear cookie. I am afraid there is one… disappointment…in my arrival.” Black Forest’s mind raced as They stepped back, returning to their spot on the altar in a smooth, floaty hop. Was she not worthy? Had her faith been too little? “While you have been plenty faithful to the creators of this realm, alas, I cannot put myself among their original number.”

Black Forest was confused. Was this not a witch in front of her? The figure chuckled. “What? You thought the witches’ static in both age and number?” They threw their arms wide theatrically. “Nay. Theirs is a craft passed down though generations, and I am but a humble student of such. Why, I studied bakecraft with one of the famed witches themselves not too long ago!” Black Forest stared in awe as they processed what they heard. While this one was not of the godly creators, they had been blessed with teaching straight from the witches themselves!

“You…you studied under the godly creators? Learned their most sacred of arts?” Black Forest asked with reverence, their breath grew heavy with excitement. To have met with the witches themselves! Oh how holy their beloved must be to have been welcomed into their numbers.

The figure nodded. “Indeed. And it was through my tutelage that I stumbled across this realm. The witch taught me much of baking with lifepowder, but they had neglected to mention their coven had created such an impressive and self-sustaining realm!” they spun, arms wide in a theatrical gesture. They came to a stop facing away from Black Forest Cookie. “…I have spent the past few weeks watching from afar. Through the eyes of the cookie I baked with the witch and released into this world. But alas, he has found his place and begun to settle. With no other easy target for scrying in this world, my study of the witches’ great work has slowed to a crawl.” They looked over their shoulder at the cookie still kneeling behind them. “…then…you appeared. Through the cookie’s eyes I saw your devotion, left unrewarded. While it took more effort than with the one I baked, I have been watching you for a while, Black Forest Cookie. And I must say, I find myself positively charmed by your affections.”

The silvery figure stepped silently towards Black Forest, bowing down and offering a hand towards them. “So…if you will have me…I will gladly be thy groom.”

Black Forest couldn’t contain her joy any longer. Her cookie dough turning to cake as she let out a gleeful squeal. “OH, YES! YES! OF COURSE, MY BELOVED! OH HOW I’VE WAITED FOR THIS DAY!” Her joyous cries shook the temple, the roof of which was barely tall enough to fit her towering cake form.

The silvery form of her beloved floated up to face her, a smile on their face. “Then that leaves only a single matter to attend to. The matter of my form. Or rather,” they floated through Black Forest’s head, “the lack thereof.” They walked in front of Black Forest, as if stepping on the air itself. “My true form is much too large. Larger than even this towering form of yours. I fear if I tried to traverse the world, I would simply break it with every step. And besides, drawing that much attention will make learning of this realm all the harder. So…I will need a new form to inhabit. A cookie to be my vessel.”

Black Forest Cake held her large hands under their beloved, as if holding them aloft. “OH, HOW DIVINE IT SHALL BE. MY BELOVED IN COOKIE FORM!” Her words, though spoken softly, were still almost deafening up close given her form. “I CANNOT WAIT TO SEE IT.”

But their beloved shook their head. “Unfortunately, I don’t have the means to bake at the moment. I travel light, so I have no access to a proper kitchen nor ingredients. And I fear my tutor is away and has locked her hut. Which is why I have appeared as such.” They approached, placing a hand on Black Forest’s head. “Your faith reaches far. Surely someone here must know of a cookie that specializes in baking dough. Someone with the skill to bake a cookie worthy of a witch.”

Black Forest was silent as they tried to find an answer to their beloved’s request, sinking back to cookie form in their calm. “…everyone knows of baking little baby doughs…but baking a whole grown up cookie from scratch? Hmmm…I’m afraid I haven’t heard of such. I will have to ask my sisters. Surely there must be someone who can create a divine form for you~” she cooed, blushing as her thoughts drifted back to daydreams of finally being wed to their beloved and what their vessel may look like.

Her beloved smiled. “Good. I will check in with you tomorrow evening. With luck, one of us will have found a solution. Good night, my dear~” And with a bow, the illusory figure faded away. Black Forest barely contained a squeal as she heard the sounds of footsteps outside the chapel doors.
