Work Text:
Shane hasn’t ever been at all surprised Ilya is good with kids. He has always been completely flustered over it and grateful for the dark sunglasses covering his eyes right now.
“Everyone line up. One by one. It is time to be judged for your crimes,” Ilya says, strolling up and down the side of the pool with his hands behind his back. Water is running in rivulets down his skin and yeah, the sunglasses were a good call.
“Ok so maybe the guy isn’t a total ass,” Hayden sighs, decidedly off-put as he sinks into the poolside lounge next to Shane with Arthur in his arms. “Kids seem to like him well enough, they’re usually a pretty good judge of character right?”
“I guess,” Shane shrugs nonchalantly, but he knows Hayden is right. He absolutely cannot let him know just how accurately these kids have perceived Ilya.
“You. Are you nice to your sister?” Ilya is standing, ramrod straight in front of Jade with his hands locked behind his back. Jade giggles and nods as Ilya turns to shoot a questioning look at Hayden who wags his hand in a ‘so-so’ gesture.
“I am!” Jade insists.
“You are liar. In you go.” Ilya gives Jade a gentle shove and she tumbles into the pool, laughing as she surfaces and kicks away from the edge. He turns to Ruby next who has her hands over her mouth, eyes crinkled and hair plastered across her forehead. “You. Do you eat your vegetables?”
“Yes,” Ruby grins, stretching the word out as Jade shouts her protests from the water. Ilya turns back to Hayden who shakes his head vigorously. Ruby is pushed into the pool.
“Whatever gives me a break,” Hayden sighs as if he isn’t holding a child in his arms. “Speaking of, did you want to hold Arthur?” Shane wonders if he’s thinking out loud, which would be fucking disastrous because Ilya is now stretching his arms over his head and twisting side to side. Shane’s mouth waters, just a little.
“Always,” he smiles, stretching his arms out for the squirming toddler who grins and grabs Shane’s face with both hands. “Hey buddy.”
“Hi,” Arthur says, wriggling until he’s sitting in Shane’s lap comfortably. He’s the most chill out of Hayden’s kids and Shane genuinely enjoys spending time with him.
“You.” Ilya’s voice booms as he stands in front of one of the other children. “Do you go to bed when you are told?”
“Absolutely not!” One of the Boston players yells from across the pool. Ilya pushes the kid into the water.
“Swim away! I’m not trying for head injuries here, join your friends on other side,” Ilya sighs with exaggerated frustration. “And you.”
“I’m good! I eat my vegetables and I always go to bed,” the boy insists.
“Is true,” Ilya states. “I know your father. I have…harder question for you.”
“I’m really smart,” the kids grins and he definitely thinks he’s got Ilya beat.
“Yes. But do you know what is eight thousand eight hundred and twenty-two plus seven thousand five hundred and seventy nine?” Shane can tell Ilya is smirking just by looking at the back of his head. The kid’s expression drops and his eyes start shifting rapidly as he tries to solve the problem.
“Sixteen thousand four hundred and one,” Shane whispers to Arthur who squishes his cheeks again.
“Um - it’s, uh -”
“Too slow,” Ilya announces, pushing the squealing child backwards into the water. The screaming gets louder, drawing Hayden’s attention.
“Jade you were just saying you’re nice to your sister!” He shouts, hauling himself off the lounge and heading towards the other side of the pool.
“And you,” Ilya murmurs, slowly stepping closer to Shane. “You get a pass because you are too small to throw in the pool.”
“Me or the baby?”
“Is toddler, no? Who you calling baby?” Ilya teases, lightly touching Arthur’s cheek. The toddler responds by smacking his hands on Shane’s face.
“Thank you, for that,” Shane huffs but he’s biting back a smile. Ilya leans in closer, definitely too close for the public setting.
“Ilya -”
“You should know, little one, that those freckles you are touching? They belong to me,” Ilya whispers, eyes on Shane whose cheeks heat beyond what can be reasonably explained by the Tampa Bay sun.
“Pretty sure they’re on my face,” Shane breathes. Arthur is completely oblivious to the tension in the air, having turned around and spotted his father walking back over.
“That blush is mine too,” Ilya grins. He throws Shane a wink and walks backwards towards the pool, checking over his shoulder before he jumps in.
“Jesus,” Shane whispers, passing Arthur back to Hayden.
“What did he want?”
“Oh, uh he was. Uh, just - y’know, checking his math on the equation he threw at that kid,” Shane lies like the liar he is. He’s become really good at lying over the last few years.
“Can’t even do simple addition, huh,” Hayden snorts. “I seriously don’t know how you’re friends with him.”
“He’s really not that bad,” Shane replies, trying not to sound too defensive. “He’s kind of funny.”
“You’re funny. He’s a dick,” Hayden scoffs, lifting Arthur over his head. Shane is unable to tear his eyes off Ilya swimming after the kids in the pool. He wishes Ilya would show this side of himself more often - silly, goofy, loose, just…unguarded. But more than that Shane wishes he could jump into the water and hang himself off Ilya’s shoulders, letting himself be dragged around the pool. Sink his fingers into his wet curls, pulling his head to direct him around. Maybe pull his head back and -
“Pineapple on pizza? You are joking. This is terrible idea,” Ilya’s voice carries over the screeches of Hayden’s twins as they splash each other.
“Shane Hollander likes it! I saw it in an interview,” one kid argues. Ilya rolls his eyes, sighing loudly and pressing his fists against his forehead.
“Why do we care what Shane Hollander likes?”
“Because he’s the best player!”
“You again! I will not forgive so easy this time. I will throw you out of pool myself,” Ilya threatens weakly. “Pineapple. Sounds terrible.”
“It’s delicious,” Shane yells back.
“Oh well if Shane Hollander says it is delicious then it must be delicious because Shane Hollander is right about everything,” Ilya goads, pulling himself out of the pool again. “We must bow down to Shane Hollander, king of pizza.”
“Fuck off,” Shane huffs, voice barely a breathy whisper. Ilya bows with a flourish, maintaining his trademark intense eye contact for a full ten seconds before standing back up.
“All hail Shane Hollander,” Ilya whispers, drawing out the ‘r’ at the end. Shane’s breath catches in his throat as Ilya sticks his tongue out between his teeth, eyes sparkling as he jumps back into the pool.
“Ass,” Hayden scoffs. “So fucking full of himself.”
“Jar,” Shane reprimands. Hayden waves him off as Ilya coughs and splutters, the children splashing increasingly large waves of water into his face.
“Hollander!” Ilya yells. “Help me back out of the water!”
“Not a chance,” Shane counters.
“Traitor. You are traitor to your country.”
“I’m Canadian,” Shane snorts. “And you’re Russian. Neither of us are citizens of this country.”
“I thought Canadians were supposed to be polite. I am not seeing this from you.”
“I’m polite when it’s earned.”
“Please, Mr. Hollander. Help me out of the pool. I am going to drown with all these children watching,” Ilya pleads dramatically, clinging to the edge of the pool with one hand. The other is reaching out towards Shane and waving around, wide pleading eyes killing whatever dignity Shane had left in his body. He exhales heavily, standing and emptying his pockets onto the lounge.
“You know he’s going to pull you in, right?” Hayden says, grinning at Arthur who has started dozing off.
“Oh I know,” Shane sighs.
“You don’t trust me, Hollander?” Ilya teases.
“Not for a second,” Shane scoffs.
“You can put your things back in your pockets, I am not going to pull you in,” Ilya promises, eyes still wide and pleading. Shane stares at him and honestly doesn’t care that he’s definitely going to be in that pool in the next ten seconds.
“Sure,” Shane grumbles.
“I am trustworthy person, Shane Hollander,” Ilya goads as Shane crouches by the edge of the water. He reaches his hand out, shifting his weight back onto his heels in an attempt to give Ilya at least somewhat of a challenge. Ilya’s hand slides into Shane’s - it’s cold and wet, but white hot sparks still shoot right through him. He’s holding Ilya’s hand in public and nobody is batting an eyelid. Shane stands and tugs, hauling Ilya out of the water and safely onto dry land.
“Huh,” Shane murmurs. Ilya starts walking around Shane, still gripping his hand, until Shane has his back to the water.
“I told you I would not pull you in,” Ilya smirks as he takes a half step closer.
“You did.”
“This is nice shirt,” Ilya says, free hand tugging at the collar of the sage green linen button-down shirt he’s wearing (he likes the way the short sleeves show off his arm muscles and loves the way the warm breeze feels on his abs. More than that he loves the way Ilya has been looking at him in it all day).
“Thank you,” Shane whispers. His eyes flick nervously over to Hayden who looks amused, if not a little unsure of what the fuck is going on. Shane knows exactly what’s about to happen.
“Hope pool water doesn’t ruin it.” Ilya is quick to give Shane a quick shove, but Shane is quicker. He grabs Ilya’s shoulder and they both fall in, the children squealing with laughter as water washes over them. Shane and Ilya’s hands are still joined as they kick to stay underwater for a few extra seconds, Ilya’s lips (dangerously) finding Shane’s shoulder before he breaks the surface.
“You’re the worst,” Shane laughs, peeling his wet shirt away from his body once his head is above the water.
“What? I told the truth, I did not pull you in. Everyone saw,” Ilya protests loudly.
“You pushed him!” Ruby accuses, pointing a finger at Ilya and giggling.
“I did not say I would not push,” Ilya insists, voice booming as he lifts Shane’s hand in the air, shaking it aggressively. Shane doesn’t want to let go. “He pulled me.”
“You’re a liar, Rozanov,” Hayden yells, waking Arthur in his arms.
“You woke your kid. What a great father you are,” Ilya sighs. Hayden rolls his eyes and stands, walking away as he bounces his crying toddler.
“Ok,” Shane snorts. “I need to get out of the pool.”
“I can give a boost,” Ilya offers with a smile that can’t be described as anything other than downright flirty. Shane glances around as a flash of panic shoots through him, but nobody is watching them anymore. The kids have moved on to doing handstands in the water and Hayden has completely left the pool area. They're still holding hands.
“I - uh, no. I’m fine, I’ll -” Shane lets go of Ilya’s hand and feels the loss deeply. He swims over to the ladder and climbs out of the water, looking back at Ilya openly ogling him. “Jesus, Rozanov.”
“What? Is nice view,” Ilya grins, voice dropped low and chin propped on the side of the pool. “You heading to your room now?”
“Yeah,” Shane murmurs. “Come when you’re done here?”
“Oh I plan to. See you soon.” Ilya blows him an exaggerated kiss that draws attention from the kids who start yelling at Ilya to play with them again. Shane feels a little hollow.
—
Ilya knocks on his door twenty minutes later and sweeps past Shane, grabbing his hand and pulling him towards the bed. He stops at the end, spinning Shane so the back of his knees are just short of hitting the mattress.
“Hi,” Ilya hums as he holds Shane’s face, thumbs brushing over his freckles.
“Hi,” Shane breathes, eyes fluttering closed. Ilya’s lips brush over his and Shane all but melts into it, body going lax as he sinks back onto the bed and pulls Ilya down with him.
“Was nice day today,” Ilya murmurs. He settles his entire body weight on top of Shane, lips trailing along the underside of his jaw. Shane feels every last bit of stress and anxiety leave his body, the burning need to touch every inch of Ilya’s body he can reach flashing brighter within him.
“Yeah,” Shane replies as he drags his hands up Ilya’s back, pulling his shirt up and over his head. His skin is still cool from the pool water - Shane immediately makes it his personal mission to warm him back up.
“Do you really not trust me?” Ilya asks, tone teasing enough that Shane knows he’s mostly joking.
“You know I do,” Shane huffs. “More than anyone else.”
”More than Hayden Pike?”
”If I say yes will you tell him?”
”First thing when I see him,” Ilya hums against the pulse point on Shane’s neck. “I missed you.”
“I was right there the whole time,” Shane retorts, face scrunched up. He had literally been within a few feet of Ilya for most of the day.
“Yes, but I was not able to do this.” Ilya’s breath is hot against the side of Shane’s face as he kisses him softly on the cheek. “Or this.” Ilya kisses his forehead and then his nose and god Shane loves this - loves Ilya so much.
“Ilya,” Shane whispers.
“Or this,” Ilya groans as he hooks his thumbs into the waistband of Shane’s shorts and pulls them down, quickly kicking off his own and pushing them both onto the floor with his feet. He takes both of them in one hand and starts to stroke, rocking his hips as he does.
“P-pretty sure - oh fuck - you couldn’t do this - don’t stop - even if everyone knew,” Shane pants, head dropping back onto the pillow behind him as Ilya starts thrusting into his own hand. “We’d get arrested.”
“Mm but what a show we would put on,” Ilya smirks. “You in those little shorts and green shirt. No one could look away.”
“Fuck,” Shane whimpers and he’s embarrassingly close already - between having to look at a dripping wet Ilya in front of a crowd for what felt like the entire day and the way Ilya is looking down at him right now like they’re the only two people in the world, Shane is one muttered dirty phrase away from making a huge mess.
“Been thinking about touching you like this all day,” Ilya confesses as he mouths wetly at Shane’s neck. “Making you come so hard you forget your own name.”
“Ilya,” Shane whines. Ilya picks up the pace, muffling his moans into Shane’s hair.
“Only word you need to remember,” Ilya breathes. “Is please.”
“Please,” Shane moans and it only takes five more thrusts and Ilya tightening his grip before Shane is spilling into his hand and all over his own stomach and chest. Ilya follows quickly, his entire body shuddering before he lets go and collapses on top of Shane. He won’t stay like this for long - he knows how much Shane hates the sticky and rapidly cooling feeling on his body, but for now he enjoys Ilya’s breathing slowing in his ear.
“These freckles,” Ilya mumbles, pulling back just far enough to make eye contact as he swipes a definitely sticky thumb over Shane’s left cheekbone. “Mine.”
“Yours,” Shane agrees as his own breathing returns to normal. He needs to shower, he needs to eat something, he needs to call his dad for his birthday, but before he does any of that he needs to kiss his boyfriend. Shane tugs Ilya down for a sloppy kiss and tries not to think too hard about the mess smearing between them.
“You’re filthy, Shane Hollander,” Ilya grins, using his clean hand to swipe across Shane’s dirty cheek.
“Only for you,” Shane affirms quietly. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Ilya hums. “Think we can get away with me staying here tonight?”
“We’ll make it work,” Shane says firmly. “I’m not letting you go.”
“Good,” Ilya grins. “Let’s shower and eat, then we call your dad for his birthday?”
“I love you,” Shane says again because it often feels like he can’t say it enough. Ilya kisses him, tender with his clean hand sliding up Shane’s neck.
“I love you too. Let’s get cleaned up.”
