Chapter Text

Deep beneath the bustling streets of Gotham, in the labyrinthine sewers that twisted like the veins of a dying beast, the air hung heavy with the stench of decay and damp concrete. Flickering fluorescent lights cast long, jagged shadows across the walls, where rivulets of murky water trickled down from unseen leaks above. This was no ordinary hideout; it was a fortress of forgotten infrastructure, a place where the League of Shadows plotted the city's undoing. Bane, the future masked terror of Gotham, stood behind the brain of the operation, his massive frame clad in tactical gear that strained against his rippling muscles. His eyes, cold and calculating behind the grotesque mask that muffled his voice into a mechanical rasp, fixed on the woman before him.

Talia al Ghul, disguised to the world as the elegant philanthropist Miranda Tate, paced slowly in the dim light. Her dark hair was pulled back in a practical ponytail, a stark contrast to the polished updos she wore in boardrooms and galas. She wore a simple black jumpsuit that hugged her athletic figure, practical for the underground world she navigated with ease. Her face, usually a mask of composed sophistication, now betrayed a flicker of genuine emotion—admiration, perhaps even cruel obsession—as she spoke to Bane, her voice echoing softly off the walls.

"You know, Bane" She began, her tone laced with a rare warmth that seemed out of place in this grim setting "I finally understand Father's obsession with him. Bruce Wayne... Batman. He saw in him the potential for greatness, the fire that could have led the League into a new era." She stopped pacing and turned to face Bane, her eyes gleaming with intensity. "He wanted Bruce to succeed him, to marry me, to build something eternal. And now, after spending time with him as Miranda Tate, I see it too. He's... perfect"

Bane tilted his head slightly, his mask hissing with each controlled breath. He didn't interrupt; he rarely did unless necessary. His presence was enough to command silence, but with Talia, there was a bond forged in shared pain and purpose.

"Perfect?" He echoed, his voice a gravelly thunder that reverberated through the chamber. "In what ways, Talia? The man is broken, a shadow of what he once was. He is a corrupt symbol of this city"

She smiled, a sly curve of her lips that hinted at secrets only she knew. "Broken? Perhaps on the surface. But beneath that... oh, Bane, he's everything a partner could be. Intelligent and driven, with a body honed by years of discipline. And in private moments..." Her voice dropped to a conspiratorial whisper, as if the sewers themselves might eavesdrop. "He's satisfying in all the ways that matter. Passionate, attentive, skilled. Father was right; he could have been my equal, my king. It's almost a shame we have to destroy him"

Bane's eyes narrowed, but he said nothing at first. He crossed his arms over his broad chest, the leather of his gloves creaking softly. "Satisfying" He repeated, the word dripping with skepticism through his mask. "You speak of him as if he were more than a tool in our plan. Remember, Talia, he rejected the League. He killed your father"

Her expression hardened for a moment, the warmth giving way to the steel of vengeance. "I haven't forgotten. But understanding him makes the betrayal sweeter. He's not just an enemy; he's a missed opportunity. In bed, in conversation, in strategy—he's flawless. I can see why Father pushed so hard for that alliance. Bruce makes you feel alive, Bane. Truly alive"

The conversation hung in the air like the humid mist around them. Bane shifted his weight, his boots scraping against the grimy floor. He had his doubts about Bruce Wayne—Talia's words carried weight; she was Ra's al Ghul's daughter, after all.

"Flawless" Bane murmured, more to himself than to her. "We shall see how flawless he remains when Gotham burns"

Talia opened her mouth to respond, her mind racing with memories of stolen moments with Bruce under the guise of Miranda. The way his hands moved with precision, the intensity in his eyes that mirrored her own hidden fire. But before she could elaborate, the heavy metal door at the far end of the chamber groaned open. In strode Barsad, Bane's loyal lieutenant. He was a wiry man, dressed in dark fatigues, a rifle slung over his shoulder. His eyes darted between Talia and Bane, sensing the tension in the air.

"Boss" Barsad said, his voice clipped and urgent, nodding first to Bane and then to Talia. "We've intercepted a call. It's coming in on Wayne's secret line—the one he uses for his... nocturnal activities" He held up a small device, a makeshift interceptor cobbled together from stolen tech, its screen glowing faintly in the dim light.

Talia's eyebrows arched in interest, her pacing resuming with renewed energy. "Wayne's secret phone? That's the encrypted one, isn't it? The one even Lucius Fox doesn't know about fully" She glanced at Bane, a spark of mischief in her eyes. "This could be useful. Who knows what secrets he's spilling now?"

Bane nodded curtly, his mask hissing as he exhaled. "Patch it through, Barsad. Let us hear what the Bat whispers in the dark"

Barsad fiddled with the device, his fingers dancing over the buttons with practiced efficiency. The chamber filled with a faint static hum, then the crackle of a connection being made. The three of them gathered around the small speaker, the air thick with anticipation. Talia's heart quickened; eavesdropping on Bruce felt like a delicious invasion, a way to peel back another layer of the man she both admired and despised.

The line connected with a soft click, and immediately, a voice flooded the speaker—young, male, and slurred with the unmistakable haze of alcohol. It wasn't Bruce; it was someone else, ranting with the unfiltered passion of a few too many drinks.

"...and you want to know why I didn't date Bruce Wayne after sleeping with him? Huh? You really want to know?" The voice was indignant, laced with a Gotham accent that pegged the speaker as a local boy, perhaps from the streets. There was a pause, filled with the clink of glass against a hard surface—probably a bar top or a coffee table—and then a burst of laughter that was more bitter than amused. "Okay, fine, I'll be honest with you. It was two years ago, right? Back when I was still figuring shit out, and Bruce... well, he's Bruce Wayne, billionaire playboy, all that jazz. But lemme tell you, it was the worst sex I've ever had in my entire goddamn life!"

Talia froze, her eyes widening in shock. Bane, ever the stoic, simply stared at her, his gaze unblinking and intense. Barsad stifled a cough, pretending to adjust the device to hide his smirk. The voice continued, oblivious to its unintended audience.

"I mean, seriously! All those desperate, money-hungry whores who chase after him—they must be out of their minds! Or maybe they're just really good at faking it, 'cause holy shit, that was pathetic. Bruce is a nice guy, don't get me wrong—charming, generous, all that. But in bed? God, I wanted to feel something, anything! It was like... like screwing a robot programmed by someone who read about sex in a textbook but never actually tried it. My pinky finger could've done a better job, I swear to God!"

The rant picked up steam, the speaker's words tumbling out faster, slurred but emphatic. Talia could picture him now—gesturing wildly, perhaps spilling his drink as he leaned into the phone.

"He fumbled around like a virgin on prom night, but worse! No rhythm, no passion, just... mechanical. Thrust, thrust, done. I lay there thinking, 'Is this it? Is this what all the tabloids rave about?' Nah, man, those crazy bitches must have the best poker faces in the world, or they're delusional. It was so bad, so utterly disappointing, that I'm glad we just ended up as friends. No amount of Wayne Enterprises stock could make me go through that again. Hell, I'd rather sleep with a plank of wood—at least that wouldn't pretend to be something it's not!"

Bane's stare bored into Talia, silent but screaming with irony. The contradiction hung in the air like a bad joke, her earlier praise of Bruce's "satisfying" prowess now shredded by this drunken tirade. Talia's cheeks flushed slightly, not from embarrassment but from the sheer absurdity of it all. She had experienced Bruce differently—or had she? Doubt flickered in her mind for the first time.

The voice on the line hiccuped, then laughed again, a sloppy, self-deprecating chuckle. "And get this—he tried to be all dominant, like the big bad wolf vibe, but it came off as... awkward. Like a kid playing dress-up. I mean, I respect the guy, I do. But sexually? Worst partner ever. Ever! If I had to rate it on a scale of one to ten, it'd be a negative five. I'd take a cold shower over that any day"

Barsad glanced between his superiors, his lips twitching as he fought back a grin. The situation was comical in its darkness—a plot to destroy Gotham interrupted by a petty, booze-fueled roast of their enemy's bedroom skills.

Then, suddenly, another voice cut in on the line—deep, gravelly, unmistakable. Bruce Wayne himself, his tone a mix of surprise and amusement tempered by caution. "John? Blake? You there? What's this about—"

The ranting voice—John Blake, the young detective Talia vaguely recalled from dossiers on Gotham's police force—froze mid-sentence. There was a fumble, the sound of a phone nearly dropping, followed by the clatter of ice in a glass tipping over. "Oh shit—Bruce? Bruce, is that you? I, uh... I thought I was talking to... wait, how did—fuck, I must've dialed the wrong number. Or... shit, the secret line? Goddammit, I'm sorry, man. I didn't mean—"

Bruce's voice remained calm, but there was an undercurrent of tension, the kind that came from years of hiding secrets. "John, slow down. You're drunk. What's going on? And... what was that about two years ago?"

Panic laced John's response, his slur worsening in his haste. "Nothing! Nothing, Bruce. Just... venting to a buddy. Wrong dial, total accident. Forget I said anything. You're... you're great, man. The best friend a guy could have. Just ignore me; I'm three sheets to the wind here"

Talia stood in stunned silence, her mind reeling. The perfect Bruce Wayne, reduced to this? She glanced at Bane, who hadn't moved a muscle, his eyes still locked on her like a predator sizing up prey. The irony was palpable, a dark punchline in their grand scheme.

Finally, she broke the silence, her voice low and commanding. "Bane... not a word. Not. A. Word."

But Bane, ever the philosopher in a monster's body, couldn't resist entirely. His mask hissed as he leaned in slightly. "Perfection, you said. Satisfying in all ways" His tone was neutral, but the mockery was there, subtle as a knife's edge.

Talia shot him a glare that could wilt steel. "I said not to say anything"

The chamber fell quiet again, save for the distant drip of water and the fading static from the interceptor. Barsad cleared his throat awkwardly. "Should I... cut the feed, ma'am?"

She nodded sharply. "Yes. And Barsad—ensure this recording is secured. It might prove... entertaining later"
