Once

Summary:

There's no telling how far this train goes or how many stations it is going to pass through. The train in the sky runs for as long as Aoife has been here, and perhaps even longer, but how and why does it run? Aoife never questioned. Why would she ever need to in the first place?

Notes:

I got this train in the sky for the backrooms level I would be stuck in based on my birth month and I loved the idea of a floating train in the sky. Who is there? What would they do? What is their purpose? The questions came pouring out of the image which made me open AO3 for the first time in a long while. I've never used AO3 before though so I hope I'm doing this right. I've never read an AO3 fanfic before either ( I opened it up once to see what all the buzz is about but couldn't really get into it... ), so... in any case, I hope you enjoy it and do let me know what you think of it. :)

Chapter 1: As above so below

Chapter Text

Aoife woke up in a cold sweat. She looks up at the dark ceiling of her room, the sunlight outside dimly brightens the room through the curtains. She sits up to peek outside, the sky stretches as far as the eye could see, and the sun peeks its head behind the clouds. Aoife could see the other coaches of the train as well as the train slowly approaching a distant station, it was time to begin the day.

Looking around the coach she was in, there are four beds placed in double decker style. Aoife slept in the lower bunk of the beds on the right. The other beds were sprawled with random items, a tablet, earbuds, multiple stacks of books, plush toys, a messenger bag, clothes... the list goes on but Aoife ignores the obvious mess altogether and head to the last coach.

The last coach was a bathroom area. It had a bathtub, toilet, mirror, sink... all things you would find in a typical bathroom. Aoife turns on the tap for the bathtub and lets it fill up as she does her morning bathroom routine before dipping in the warm water.

Aoife wraps her body with a towel and heads to the next coach after the sleeping bunks. That coach has several sets of tables and chairs placed neatly as well as a counter near the door leading to the next coach. This coach is also the only one with a door on its left for passengers to come in and out. Each table has a neat bouquet of Iris plants that vary in colour, placed in a vase.

She enters the counter through a plank that separates the exit to the next coach and the dining area and opens the door to the next coach.

On the right, there is a kitchen with a counter that has cupboards underneath and overhead that are filled with colourful sticky notes on the doors, inside, just dust and possibly dust bunnies. A fridge is placed at the end of the counter, filled with random snacks that Aoife touches once in a blue moon.

The counter has absolutely nothing on it except a sole kitchen appliance at the other end of the counter, placed nearest to the entrance, a microwave.

On the left of the coach, there is a final set of tables and chairs right next to the window. A white Iris plant is placed in the vase there. From the window, one could clearly see the head of the train in front, but in that coach, no door leading there can be found. Only a wooden wall with a single picture framed and hung, A pure white Iris flower, identical to the one on the table in the couch.

Aoife stops before the microwave and shoves her pyjamas inside, and writes something on a sticky note next to the microwave, "Need a new set of clothes." She sticks the note onto her pyjamas that are crumbled up inside the microwave and closes the door. Immediately, the microwave starts whirring with a five-minute countdown displayed.

The microwave runs as Aoife prepares her morning coffee for the day. Right as the coffee machine finished making her coffee, the microwave dinged.

She opens the door to a neatly folded set of clothes replaced her pyjamas and a new sticky note that says "Speak with some respect, youngin! Quit treating me like a tool or else I'll stop supplying you with caffeine!"

Aoife scoffs at the note, "Youngin? Who the hell says youngin at this day and age?" The sticky note is then stuck onto an empty space on the cupboards. She writes another sticky note while sipping her coffee and places it inside the microwave ( "Could I have my breakfast please? Sir microwave.") and puts on her clean clothes right there in the middle of the kitchen couch, well, there's no one there anyway, besides her. The microwave dings again, and a plate of sausage, eggs, red beans, and toast appears inside the microwave (along with a sticky note that says "I'd argue that sir is worse than youngin, girl. Watch your mouth!")

Aoife sits at the table in the kitchen with a book in one hand and sipping coffee in the other. The speaker in the coach rings a bell-like sound, " Next station arriving in 30 minutes."

" I wonder if I'll have time to finish breakfast... " Aoife says to herself as she takes a bite into the sausage.
