Ted Mullens opens up to GQ about treating the pets of Hollywood, dating in the spotlight, and his go-to karaoke song (hint: it’s more 90s than you think).
Who among us hasn’t dreamed of being the small-town boy to win the heart of reality star, international socialite, and global citizen Alexis Rose? For Canadian-born, LA-based veterinarian Ted Mullens, it’s real life — and it couldn’t be sweeter if Carly Rae Jepsen wrote it herself.
GQ: Like many of us, Dr. Mullens — can I call you Dr. Mullens?
TM: [laughs] Please, no! Just call me Ted.
GQ: Like many of us, Ted, you’re an LA transplant. How are you liking the city? How does it compare to your hometown?
TM: It’s definitely different! I’m still warming up to LA, honestly. I miss the cold, if you can believe it! But I’m really enjoying the food. Alexis has amazing taste in restaurants, and she’s been introducing me to all of her favorites since I moved to LA. She’s actually had to start requesting that they don’t publish the names of her favorite spots because they get so mobbed. [laughs] Definitely like night and day compared to my hometown, which has exactly three restaurants and zero Korean fried chicken.
GQ: Our sources say that you’re quite a force to be reckoned with both in the clinic as well as on the karaoke stage. Can you confirm?
TM: Oh, god. Have you been talking to my patients? I think that might be a HIPP-purr violation.
GQ: Excuse me?
TM: You know, since I’m a vet. I don’t want to brag about my professional life — I’m just a guy who loves animals and wants to do what’s right by them. Just doing my job, you know?
GQ: But you will brag about your karaoke chops?
TM: Oh, yeah, for sure. I’m a real beast when it comes to karaoke.
GQ: Of course, we have to ask what your go-to song is.
TM: It kinda depends on the vibe, you know? If it’s just me and Alexis and my brothers-in-law, I usually go for classics like the Spice Girls or Alanis. But in a crowded karaoke bar? CRJ all the way.
GQ: Sorry, brothers-in-law?
