The Art of Broken Beginnings

Summary:

“I don’t— I didn’t cheat, Miya.”

Atsumu’s voice was filled with exhaustion. He was tired of crying, of hiding, he wanted to just end everything.

“Please...” The words came out small and helpless.

“Believe me, just this once...Atsumu.”

He was long broken, reduced to nothing but glass shards. Yet somehow, he could still hear the glass break—breaking for the very man who had ruined him for years.

Chapter 1: 'Regrets'

Chapter Text

Atsumu was not your typical omega.

A typical omega was a docile, submissive person. An omega who would find an alpha and engage in the usual courting rituals, such as exchanging scented gifts, going on dates, and scenting each other—Atsumu refused to follow such traditional ways. The blonde wanted to be the one who provides for their alpha, dotes on them, and presents them gifts. People called him crazy for even considering such thoughts, but the blonde paid them no mind.

After the twins' presentation in high school, alphas, omegas, and betas alike flocked to him and Osamu, they were the center of attention. Naturally, the omegas were there for his twin. They were all set and taught on pursuing alphas—or betas, if fortunate enough. His twin went out with a couple of omegas, while Atsumu tried dating alphas—only to reject them once they attempted to assert their dominance or traditional ways over him. The blonde stopped after numerous failed attempts and resorted to betas—some omegas, if they were willing to be open-minded.

Around the time that Atsumu was in high school, he came across this weird, curly-haired alpha while attending his first year's training camp. The person was standoffish, very prickly, and often appeared to judge people around him for their poor hygiene. The blonde, intrigued by the alpha's behavior, began to follow him around like a curious duckling.

The raven noticed him. Why would he not? Atsumu made it his job to nitpick and comment at every move the alpha made. He had a mischievous grin painted across his face as he tested the raven's patience, waiting for him to break that cold and uptight exterior.

He did.

"What the fuck is wrong with you?"

The blonde froze, then grinned in victory.

"I don't know what yer talking about, Omi-kun"

The alpha glared at him. He was so close to strangling this blonde man in front of him—omega or not.

"For the last time, my name is Sakusa Kiyoomi, not Omi."

"Sure, Omi-kun."

Osamu and Komori watched the scene unfold a few feet away. His twin was tired of his antics and chose to ignore him. Komori was too busy texting Sakusa's mom, telling her that his cousin was finally making friends.

Insults and taunts were thrown at each other throughout the training camp. They also started competing with one another— teammate or not, the two of them had their own world. Atsumu felt a strange feeling of happiness, which was weird because he never experienced this emotion in the presence of alphas who were not members of his family or teammates—he had a terrifying realization.

He likes this alpha.

He wants this alpha.

'Fuck.'

It was the first time in Atsumu's life that he felt the sense of dread that came with being himself. While the blonde had the intention of courting this alpha, he was unsure of whether the man would be okay with it, and so he did what was best—he began to ignore the alpha.

He made it his mission to avoid and stay away from him, making sure that their interactions during games were as limited as possible. Osamu noticed the sudden change and asked why his twin was acting like a fool.

"I dunno Samu… He doesn't look like the type to, ya know." Atsumu murmured.

The alpha stared at his twin, bewildered by this reaction. He'd never seen his twin act or behave in such manner toward an alpha before. The Atsumu he knew always acted cocky and confident with his actions, never doubting his decisions—so why was this alpha breaking the egoistical bastard of a twin that he knew? It must be serious.

His twin had fallen for the alpha.

He was unsure of what to do. The alpha only knew how to drive away the alphas attempting to court his twin, despite his constant refusal for help, saying that he was not some docile omega and he could fend for himself. However, that didn't stop him from protecting his twin from unwanted suitors, despite the fact that he was the younger of the two, he felt the need to protect the blonde.

Osamu chose not to act and instead waited for Atsumu's next course of action.

If his twin had noticed his sudden change, then Sakusa would’ve too. No blonde omega was pestering him, no insults and teases, and the smell of milky caramel was almost absent. The alpha was confused as to why he felt a pang to his chest, a bit angry at the omega because he was clearly ignoring him.

Was he admitting defeat?

Definitely not.

It was not like the omega to easily admit defeat based on the past few days of being with him and seeing him fight his twin. Sakusa couldn't take it anymore, he cornered the omega after the practice.

"Are you finally admitting defeat, Miya?" The blonde looked alarmed at first but his face immediately morphed from alarmed to annoyed.

"What kind of bullshit are ya spoutin', Omi-Omi?"

"Clearly you've been avoiding me for the past few days, then it must be because you admit defeat."

Atsumu looked at the alpha and scoffed, crossing his arms over his chest and raised his chin up--like some kind of a posturing alpha.

"You must've hit yer head, Omi-kun. I am nowhere near admitting defeat."

"Then why are you ignoring me, Miya?"

The blonde looked away, avoiding any sort of eye contact from the alpha. Sakusa felt annoyed by this reaction and scoffed, taking a step backwards as he raised his brow at the omega.

"Do you like me, Miya? Is that it?"

...

The omega froze and his face flushed a darker red. His scent screamed embarrassment as it leaked from his patches from the dripping sweat. Sakusa stood there, dumbfounded at the omega's reaction, it proved that his theory was right--the blonde liked him.

"So, you do like me, huh?"

"SO WHAT IF I DO HUH? IT'S NOT LIKE YER GONNA ACCEPT MY COURTIN' OR ANYTHIN'!" Atsumu suddenly blurted out defensive.

He then realized what he had just said to the alpha and grew even more embarrassed by his sudden outburst. The blonde hid his face behind his hands as he groaned in shame, turning away from Sakusa as he prayed for the ground to swallow him whole.

'Great. I just ruined my last chances of making up with him. He's gonna think that I'm weird and start ignoring me. That's fine. He ain't that g-'

"Never imagined an omega wanting to do the courting." The raven surprisingly said as he watched the blonde in his misery.

"Yer not…yer not weirded out by me?"

Sakusa looked at him weirdly.

"Why would I?"

Ever since that faithful day, the blonde omega started to relentlessly bother (harass) the alpha with his presence. After discovering that Sakusa wasn't weirded out by him, he grew hopeful that the alpha might also be interested in him. Call him delusional but a guy can only dream, okay?

He followed Sakusa around with the remaining days of the training camp, asking him the same question, again and again.

"Omi-kun, can I court ya?"

"Omi-Omi! Ya look so pretty today, can I court ya?"

It was a series of "Omi-kun" and "Can I court ya?" throughout the last days of training camp, until it was time for them to go home. Atsumu managed to get Sakusa's phone number by asking his cousin, which Motoya gladly gave without giving it a single thought. The man enjoyed seeing his cousin suffer with the omegas pining.

Days turned into weeks, and months into years, Atsumu was still persistent with his "Get Omi-kun to say yes" plan. As time went on, the two of them began exchanging messages, which eventually evolved into late-night phone calls and video chats.

Of course, the omega never forgot to ask the raven his question, wooing him with his sweet words and flirty texts in an attempt to convince the alpha to say yes—it failed.

The omega didn't lose hope and began to come up with a better plan. His pining went on for years, even after the two of them went different paths, Atsumu still managed to make and find time for Sakusa despite the demanding schedule of playing professional volleyball. Sakusa, on the other hand, was so busy with his studies that he hardly had time to give to Atsumu. Despite this, he made an effort to respond to his messages and calls on a weekly basis.

It was that night, Sakusa must've been really tired, he jokingly asked the alpha that same question and got an unexpected answer.

"Sure." He replied--jokingly.

The ravens word left the omega flabbergasted. After all that pining, he had managed to make the alpha say yes!

Atsumu took his words seriously and began courting the alpha. He began giving Sakusa various presents by paying him a visit on his campus, bringing him out on dates—which was an unusual occurrence—and presenting him a few scented clothes here and there.

The omega was happy and pleased that he finally got the alpha of his dreams. Though they were not yet official, the alpha accepted his courting gifts, it was still an improvement. A year had passed and the blonde was still in the midst of his courting when something happened.

He was on his way to Sakusa's college dorm to bring some takeout for the raven. The raven had mentioned it during their call that he was going to get busy because his final exams were coming up and he had to focus.

Atsumu had decided to at least give the alpha a treat for his hard work—which proved to be a big mistake. As he was about to knock on his door, he smelt something leak into the creaks making him freeze, hands hovering over the doorknob.

It was a sweet and enticing smell of an omega.

'It must be a classmate.'

While trying to make an effort not to overthink the situation, he convinced himself that it must have been one of his classmates who was in need of assistance when he suddenly heard a moan. Dread filled his stomach, mouth going dry and ears ringing. The blonde was confused at first, trying to process the sound that he just heard, when suddenly, another moan followed.

Atsumu's hands were shakingly badly he couldn’t move or walk away from the door, it was only when he heard Sakusa's mumbled voice that he snapped back into reality.

"Bedroom, now." His voice was raspy and a bit breathless, probably from kissing or something else.

Tears blurred Atsumu's vision, head filled with continuous questions of--

'Why?Why?Why?Why?'

'Bad omega. Not good enough. Run. Stupid.'

'Shut up!'

He tried calming himself and shakily placed the takeout order beside the door and ran away, leaving his soured milk and burnt caramel scent in the hallway—a broken scent of an omega. Sakusa was too busy with the other omega inside his dorm room to even smell the putrid scent left on his doorway or realize what he just did.

Atsumu kept on running.

Running to who knows where when he stopped in front of a familiar building. His instincts must've dragged him here. Ignoring the 'Closed' sign, he barged into the shop.

"Sorry we're clo- 'Tsumu?" Osamu froze after seeing his twin that had barged into his shop, red-rimmed eyes and stuffy nose. His scent smelled so broken and burnt, so close to a drop it made the Alphan instinct inside Osamu alert.

"…'Samu" Atsumu brokenly whispered, taking a step forward when suddenly his vision blacked out. His last memory was seeing his twins panicked face and Suna coming out of the kitchen donning the same look.

'Fuck…'

Atsumu was a strong omega. He was never easily deterred by something so simple and stupid. The blonde knew that he did nothing wrong, so why was his omega blaming him for what happened?

He hates it.

He hates feeling this way.

He shouldn't have done this in the first place.

Atsumu fucking hates it so much.
