Chapter Text
Balia, a generally mythic world, homes many types of creatures. From humans to horses to flying cats and even wizards, there is much to be discovered about them and their abilities.
Two young men, both just having graduated from high school, desire to know more about the creatures that inhabit their world and how they can interact with them as wizards.
Their names are Lyzar Winters and Calza Simmons, and they have both just been accepted into Damsel's Dreams University, a widely revered and secluded magic school, known for raising up some of the most successful wizards in the world.
Lyzar, a ginger fellow with blue streaks in his hair, was more excited than excited. He had been wanting to get away from everyone, his family, his school, just everyone, especially his old bullies, which thankfully, none will be attending here. He could feel his heart pounding as he was finally able to leave orientation and go to their dorms. He was thankful that the ride here had been very long and he just wanted to lay down and go to sleep.
He was also annoyed at his schedule. He shouldn't need to take an English class if he was going to be studying magical animals but whatever. It was a requirement for graduation. Lyzar shook his head.
This was an exciting day and he wasn't going to let a stupid schedule ruin his day besides he needs to be in a good mood if he was going to make friends with his dorm mate. As soon as he got into the dorm building he quickly made his way to the dorm he was assigned and read the name on the door. ‘Calza Simmons’ that's an odd name, two first names. I guess their parents were indecisive.
But still this is his dorm mate for the rest of the year unless something happens… so probably best to start off on the right foot. So he took a deep breath to calm down and opened the door to his new home until the summer. “Hello, is anyone here?”
Already sitting on a bed in the luxurious room that they got to call their own was a tall, slender man with long red hair and eyes like a galaxy. He appears to have been reading the welcome pamphlet they were given at orientation and petting a cat.
That is, until Lyzar speaks to him. He looks his new roommate up and down, putting down the packet. He's really nothing special, but he does have interesting eyes. He raises a brow.
“And you are?”
“I'm Lyzar, your roommate. My name is on the door with yours” Lyzar smiled and looked at the cat he loves cats! “Oh I didn't know they allowed pets in the dorms! I didn't think they would because of possible damage and stuff.” He chuckled. He would have brought his own cat if he knew. Actually, probably not. Asteroid is an ass.
“So what's the cat's name and you do go by Calza right?” He walked over and looked around for a place to sit down. It would probably be rude to sit on somebody's bed without permission right?
“I have a cat of my own named Asteroid. I would have brought him but he's an ass and probably wouldn't get along with another cat.” He really wants to pet the cat but doesn't know if it's friendly with strangers
“Um, your cat is friendly right?”
The curly bobtailed little thing hops off of Calza's bed and begins rubbing against his new roommate's leg with a meow and Calza just just shakes his head and rolls his eyes at the affection.
“You tell me. Say hi, Cosmo.”
Lyzar smiled and quickly petted the bobtail cat as soon as it came to greet him Cosmo seemed like a fitting name as the cat's eyes in Lyzar's opinion looked a little empty inside.
“Aw Cosmo is a cute name, very fitting.”
He smiled and booped the cat's nose gently hoping to not get bit.
Calza watches the other pet Cosmo for a second before speaking up again.
“Nice to meet you. I hope that we can keep things here as simple and impersonal as possible. I am just here because I can't afford to live off campus.”
Lyzar nods. “Fair enough. I suppose I'd only have my parent's place and that's a long drive. Besides, at least here you don't have to deal with family visits. But I do hope we can at least get along.”
Calza then gestures at the half of the room he had been setting his stuff down in.
“This is my half. Don't even think about touching it, got that?”
Great. room splitting. something Lyzar wasn't very good at doing.
“Ok Jesus man, you're coming off a little aggressive, no need to be a dick.”
Calza simply got up from his bed and began unpacking more of his luggage, shrugging him off.
“Whatever. I assume you are also here under the Beastly Understanding major? I'm pretty sure they match roommates by major.”
Lyzar rolled his eyes and started unpacking as well. His roommate might be an asshole. Great.
“Yes I am. I've always preferred animals to people so it seems fitting you know? And probably how they do it since I doubt it's alphabetical. Our names are far apart in the alphabet.”
Calza sighs and shakes his head. “Yep. Simmons and Summers. So far apart.”
He doesn't have a hatred for him yet, well at least not any more than he usually has for people, but he has noticed that this guy is kind of a moron. In his opinion at least.
Lyzar laughs nervously. “Oh I meant first names, but I guess most schools do go by last names don't they? Also, it's Winters by the way, not Summers.”
Ok so the guy clearly didn't read the board very closely or didn't care enough to do so or just genuinely forgot about it; either way it came off a bit rude. But it could be a simple mistake.
Calza turns to face his roommate once more, flushed and embarrassed at his mistake being called out, and points to a door on the wall between their beds. “There's the bathroom if you need it. God knows I did after that boring ass orientation…”
Was this an attempt at helpfulness? Or just another snide remark? It's probably just an excuse to change the subject.
“Thanks. Yeah, orientation was boring as hell. I understand why it's necessary but they could at least keep it to important information only. I got stuck with a teacher who was a really slow talker. It wasn't very fun.”
Calza plops back down on his bed with his cell phone in hand, looking at Lyzar through his peripheral vision.
“They’re having a feast to mark the start of the new semester a couple days before classes start. Do you plan on going at all?”
His detached expression and generally aggressive and antisocial personality gave his own answer.
Lyzar went into the bathroom to unpack a few things there. Mostly hair care stuff as his hair was very thick and wavy, some parts looking a bit curly. He speaks loudly enough for his roommate to hear him.
“Probably! it's food I don't have to pay for and we can bring some back to the dorms if we really need to… and if the food is decent.”
He smiled. He didn't know if that was supposed to be rhetorical or not; He's always struggled understanding the hidden social rules. The groan from Calza definitely didn't help clear the air.
“I hate that you're right. That means… I probably should go.” He huffs, setting his phone down beside him. “I wasn't gonna because… well… have you fucking met any of those people? It's the worst! They're all so… cruel! I hate gatherings like that.”
Lyzar nods his head sympathetically. “Well I can go with you if that helps. I haven't met anyone else yet. I didn't think bullying would be an issue in college but if people are bullying you then we should probably report it to someone or at least make sure they're not in our dorm building.”
He throws his head back like a dramatic teenager. “I would rather go get stoned in some random basement or something than be near all those people.”
An odd comparison to make but… okay? Lyzar is really concerned as he grew up being bullied for many things, mostly autism and being trans. “Well that's weird but I guess it's understandable. I've never really done that stuff myself. I heard it makes anxiety worse.”
Calza groans and waves him off. “Whatever. If you're going then bring me with you. Not because I wanna go but because it means I won't have to cook for a while.”
Lyzar frowns a bit. What was he doing wrong? “Well I don't want to take you if it'll upset you this much… it would feel wrong dragging you around like that. I can just bring you back food if that'll make you more comfortable.”
He knows he hates being dragged around to places he doesn't want to be and he just really wants to get along with his roommate. Why was he making it so difficult to get along with him!
Calza lounges on his bed, somehow more frustrated than relaxed, typing on his phone once again. He sighs and thinks about sharing his room with this charming, annoying young man.
“Nah. I'm going.” He deadpans as he types something on his phone. “Welcome to Damsel's Dreams, I guess. Enjoy yourself and try not to get too fucked up.”
“Well I guess I can try but I doubt I'll have that many issues. Besides, I don't drink much anyways.”
Calza rolls over, setting his phone down again. “Whatever. I'm taking a nap. Don't be loud.”
Lyzar hummed as he started unpacking a few things. “Alright enjoy your nap then”
As Lyzar unpacks his things, he grows to wonder what the hell Calza's deal is? Maybe he had some sort of traumatic event that turned him into a pessimist. It's hard to really say. Either way, the two of them are roommates now and Lyzar is going to try his hardest to make the best of it.
