Railroad Switch

Summary:

Yang thinks Ren is trying to take her role as Ruby's older sibling, she's not quite right.

Notes:

Ren will always be the middle Xiao Long sibling in my heart. I just felt like writing something quick and dumb while I work on some longer more angsty fics.

Work Text:

Everyone knew that Yang was very protective of Ruby, and by extension her role as older sister. While she could admit that she had kind of dropped the ball, she certainly didn’t appreciate other people trying to move in on her territory. When Ruby started helping Ren cook dinner she’d been fine, she’d grinned and bore when they went shopping and came home giggling with half-empty bubble teas (partially because she couldn’t stay mad when they brought one back for her), even when Ruby had gone to Ren for more hand to hand training Yang held her tongue, but this crossed a line!

“Thanks Ren, I knew I could talk to you about it. Relationships are so complicated.”

Watching Ruby emerge from Ren’s room dabbing at her eyes with a big smile from around the corner, Yang grit her teeth. Dating advice was the last straw, it was time that she set things straight. As soon as Ruby had rounded the opposite corner, Yang marched over to Ren.

“Hey, we need to talk.”

Ren looked over at her with a calm smile. “Sure, what did you want to talk about?”

“Ruby! I know I messed up but you don’t get to come swooping in and steal my job. I’m her older sister.” Yang crossed her arms.

“Yang, I think there’s been a misunderstanding-” Ren said.

“I understand perfectly. Shopping trips, fighting tips, dating advice?” Yang counted on her fingers, “You’re trying to replace me.”

“I’m not trying to replace you, I do see Ruby as a little sister-”

“I knew it!”

“-but, well, I know I’m a month older than you but I sort of saw you as an older sister.” Looking down, a light blush covered Ren’s cheeks.

The next words died on Yang's tongue as her train of thought came to a screeching halt. That was an option she had not considered before. Watching Ren fidget slightly under her gaze, she could practically feel the lever in her brain shift. The tracks changed and her train of thought went zipping off in a whole nother direction.

“Of course I understand if you don’t hgk -”

Yang cut him off by grabbing him and squeezing as hard as she could. “Aww, you’re just precious aren’t you. Of course I’ll be your big sister.”

“You’re not mad anymore?”

“How could I be? I have twice the big sis power now. This is so exciting! We have so much to catch up on. Can I do your hair? Ruby always kept hers short.” Dragging him back into his room, Yang started making a mental checklist of all the things they had to do together. “Oh, and crushes! You have to tell me everything.”
