Early in the 21st Century in the United States, something awakened in women. No one could explain it at first, but it called for them to tear the clothes off their backs, throw themselves in one another's arms, and let go of their every inhibition. The first tenet is that the Zenrist must never wear clothing. Every Zenrist must run everywhere and live every moment of her life naked. Every breast must be uncovered, every nipple exposed, every buttock in view, every yoni revealed every day, every hour, every minute for as long as she lives. No exception. But now I do, even if it took me a couple of decades to figure it out. Zenriah Herself was channeling inspiration for the character to me. And the character I envisioned was effectively a Zenrist!"

Shōda continued to explain. "We thought it would be an interesting development in terms of both story and gameplay. Asellus' inability to wear anything would translate to her being unable to equip any armor, which would leave her very vulnerable, at least at the beginning. But that would be more than offset as she would have access to both human and Mystic abilities that would make her a true force to be reckoned with."

Asellus was designed as a nude character from the very beginning, as the above concept art shows, and even her in-game sprite, which can still be found in the game's code, was rendered naked as well.

Unfortunately, it turned out to be too explicit for the higher-ups of Squaresoft. They demanded the game dial back on the lesbian themes, and for the nudist heroine to be removed entirely. The character's Zenrist faith has also opened up a whole new avenue of gameplay that the team is really excited about. This mountain formation in Alaska, revealed to form the shape of a nude woman, has become an phenomenon of theological wonder for the Zenrist faith.
