Work Text:

Cam learned to deal with a lot of things in his life, scorn, disgust, judgments and more. What he never learned to deal with was kind actions.

He blamed that on the fact that they don’t happen that much to him. Nobody goes out of their way to be friendly to a trash can. But you did, you and your awkward self who gave affection away like cheap candy.

He had heard all about your little adventures around the house, charming the objects with sweet words and favors. From helping Beverly get traction to her bar to breaking up Dirk and Harper, you’ve been pretty busy spreading positivity around like a pollinating bee. But he, unlike the others, didn’t have a problem to fix. Cam didn’t have self esteem issues or relationship problems or anything that needs “fixing”, he was fine just the way he is.

Which is why he didn’t mind being one of the later objects you talked too, lord knows some people in the house needed more help then he did. After Memoria he genuinely didn’t think you’d talk to him that much, maybe once more for pleasantries, simple introductions, you seemed like the type. But no, a day after you met him for the first time you gave him one of the most sentimental and nicest gifts he’d ever gotten.

Now he was here, sulking over a drink he’d gotten hours ago. You talked to him for all of five minutes yet you ran rampant in his mind. It was crazy to him, how affectionate you were. Being sweet was as easy as breathing to you apparently. He’d heard it from others sure but this was a claim he needed to see to believe, and boy did he see it.

A small fraction of Cam wanted to try and talk to you, to learn more about the ever adored human. But truth be told, he was scared. What if you were no different than the others? What if you just hadn’t talked enough to slip up and tell him how you really feel? The overwhelming feeling that something could go wrong stopped him from making the first move.

He sighed as he took a sip of his now very watered down drink before sulking once more. A good thing presents itself and all Cam can think about is how it’d go wrong. In his defense, it always seems to go wrong, he’s not overthinking, he’s just being cautious.

At least, thats what he tells himself.

His thoughts were interrupted by a gentle tap on the space next to him. He looked up and saw Eddies tired eyes looking at him.

“Bars closing soon.”

Cam looked down and groaned, throwing back his drink before sliding the cup to Eddie who grabbed it with ease. As he cleaned said cup, Eddie looked at Cam with a raised brow. Cam signed as he slumped.

“Is there time for one of your iconic whisky sours?”

Eddie looked at the clock and nodded before quickly getting the ingredients. If he had to call someone his friend it’d be Eddie. Sure they barely talked but when they did it felt calm, and Eddies never mindlessly insulted him so there’s a bonus.

Eddie slid the drink over and this time Cam wasted no time drinking it all up. Usually the silence between the two was comfortable but this time Cam was trying to figure out how to break it.

“So….the human…”

Fuck Cam could just die. What was he doing? He didn’t talk enough to just start conversations with ease. Though Eddie didn’t seem to mind as he glanced at him before going back to cleaning the bar.

“Like, if you had to describe them in one word, what would it be?”

Eddie didn’t even look up, the answer falling easily.

“Sweet.”

What was Cam expecting? That Eddie would go on some rant about how you were the devil reincarnated? He groaned as he put his head on the bar. He should’ve drunken more. Eddie looked at the sulking man and sighed as he put the rag down.

“….Why do you ask?”

Eddie asked awkwardly, looking around for Volt, he was always better when the customers were emotional. Cam furrowed his brows, confused but fuck it, weren’t you supposed to vent to the bartender or something? He sighed as he sat up and played with the red strings of his jacket.

“They were sweet and I’m suspicious.”

Eddie laughed at the confession which made Cam glare at him till he nodded.

“I felt the exact same way.”

Eddie sighed before leaning over the bar. His eyes glaze over slightly as he remembered his time with you.

“I questioned everything they did. I swore they had some ulterior motives…but no. They were just an honest to god good person.”

Eddie shrugged, an easy smile on his face.

“Sure it still took me a minute to fully trust them, but I don’t regret it.”

Their conversation was cut short by the sound of customers leaving, their chairs sliding against the floor and their distant chattering filling the club. Cam looked over at Eddie, giving him a small nod and Eddie gave one in return.

But before Cam could even think of leaving, Volt walked up to Eddie beaming only for his expression to deflate slightly at the sight of Cam. He didn’t take it personally though, it wasn’t a him thing it was just an anyone-who-isnt-Eddie thing.

“Hello Cameron! As much as we love your patronage, the clubs closed.”

Volt smiled ever so tightly. Eddie gave a final nod to Cam before leaving the bar. Cam signed as he got up.

“Don’t gotta tell me twice.”

Cam started as he headed out, not before glancing back at Volt with a small smirk.

“Don’t worry Volt, I have no interest in your boyfriend.”

Volts hair seemed to glow brighter at the statement, his charming facade breaking for a moment as he spoke.

“Oh he’s not- I mean we’re not-“

Though Cam didn’t care enough to hear what he had to say, leaving the club. He hummed as he traveled downstairs to where he usually resided. That was until he saw you and Freddy in the kitchen, laughing as you ate a left over slice of cake. Ah, just the person he was trying to avoid.

He wasn’t ready to face you, what was he even supposed to say? He didn’t have time to think till a certain friendly yeti brought attention on him.

“Oh Cam! Hey man, how was the Breaker Box?”

Freddy asked, talking so loudly he could be heard from the attic. He might as well have put a spotlight on Cam. You look over and give him a gentle smile and wave. Cam gave an awkward nod before going for a wave before just putting his hands in his pockets awkwardly. You let out a giggle that makes Cams heart buzz, fuck.

“It was fine, Johnny didn’t perform tonight so that’s a plus.”

He shrugged, trying his best not to be awkward around you. What happened to liquid courage? He couldn’t even look at you or his mind would start to tangle.

“Anyways, I’m hitting the hey. Night Cool Kids!”

Freddy smiled before leaving. Now it was just you two. You smile at him, had he ever seen you without one?

“You must be tired. I won’t keep you up.”

You say before you turned. Cams eyes widened at the sudden departure.

“Hey!”

He called out. You look over, an eyebrow raised. Cams voice gets caught in his throat, fuck, when’d he get so spontaneous? He mentally cursed himself as he cleared his throat.

“Ummm, thanks for the book. That was….cool of you.”

You smile goes even wider as you turn back to face him, your attention fully on him.

“Oh no problem! Really they were just gonna stay in my closet anyways!”

You explained, walking over to where Cam usually was you sit right next to it and he follows.

“I have a couple more of those book-quets if you want them!”

“Book-quets? Thats so dumb.”

He laughed, shaking his head. You frown as you playfully shove him, giggling as you do.

“Hey! No need to be rude! It makes sense.”

“Yeah yeah whatever,”

He chuckled, rolling his eyes before looking at you.

“Sure I’ll take the rest of your “book-quets”. Wouldnt want them to go to waste.”

“Perfect! I’ll bring them over tomorrow, I’m tired.”

You explain as you hopped off the counter and started to walk off. Cam almost reached out for you but caught himself at the last second, crossing his arms awkwardly.

“Night.”

He said, cringing at himself after he did. You turn around at the word and give him a soft wave.

“Goodnight Cam.”
