Work Text:
“We never got to go during high school, did we?”
Miyano’s voice is low, barely loud enough to be heard over the sound of the waves washing against the shore.
“I guess not,” Sasaki says with a soft smile and a small squeeze to Miyano’s hand. There hadn’t really been a chance since it was already January when they started dating, and Sasaki’s entrance exams were right around the corner. “Is that why you asked to go today?”
If the season had been more favourable back then, Sasaki would have made sure to take at least a day off from studying so they could go. Hirano told him before that breaks are just as important as the act of studying itself, so Sasaki would have just done himself a favour by taking a day or two off to go to the beach with Miyano.
“D-did you not want to come here?” There is a slight touch of panic in Miyano’s voice that pulls on Sasaki’s heartstrings, that makes him move their locked hands so he can place a kiss on the knuckle of his boyfriend’s hand.
Even though the first days of June couldn’t be called anything but sweltering in Sasaki’s opinion, it came as a bit of a surprise when Miyano suddenly asked if they could make a trip to the beach over the weekend. It didn’t take him a heartbeat to agree, though, and that’s how they ended up spending their day on a mostly empty beach with Sasaki’s head on Miyano’s lap while catching up with all the things they didn’t get to over the last weeks.
“Of course I wanted to come.” Miyano’s hand tastes a bit salty when Sasaki’s lips ghost against it while he talks. “I missed you, Myaa-chan.”
He should be used to a lack of opportunities to meet up. During Miyano’s last year of high school, they made as much time as possible for each other between Miyano’s studying and Sasaki’s classwork, but the days they couldn’t meet always felt too numerous, and the ones they could, too short. Even now, with both of them finally back at the same school, it sometimes feels like they still get to see each other way too rarely. It makes Sasaki reconsider the thought of getting a place on his own, maybe even one they could share one day.
“Me too,” Miyano says after a moment of silence in which Sasaki can feel his boyfriend’s pulse speed up between his fingers. “I-I just thought it would be nice since we never got to come here in our uniforms.”
“You saw that in a BL, didn’t you, Myaa-chan?”
Miyano’s blush and the small sound of surprise he makes involuntarily confirm Sasaki’s suspicion. While some of the leaps his boyfriend’s thoughts make at times are still a mystery to him, even after over a year of dating, Sasaki likes to think he's gotten pretty good at figuring out when some of Miyano’s ideas have been fueled by the generous amount of BL he consumes.
“I-It came up in the new volume I bought last week,” Miyano admits while looking at Sasaki with the kind of passionate expression Sasaki has always loved on him. “But it’s a very common theme! Going to the beach with your lover in your school uniform is proof of your youth! It’s an unforgettable moment, a memory that neither of them will ever forget. They might even promise to come back every year on the same day, and then they share a kiss to seal that promise with both their lips a little salty!”
Sasaki feels his chest tighten at the thought of sharing the kind of memory Miyano described, one that they never got to make in the end. Sometimes when talking about their shared time in high school, the months in which Miyano worked out his feelings, Sasaki notices a bit of a forlorn expression on his face. Did Miyano worry about this a lot? About things they didn’t get to do? Sasaki never regretted the months he waited for Miyano’s answer, wouldn’t change the time they spent together for anything.
“It would have been nice to experience that together,” Miyano continues a little quieter, a little more mellow than before, but with a small smile on his lips. “But I think I might like this even better.”
“What do you mean?” Sasaki isn’t sure if he is hearing the sea or his blood rushing in his ears by now.
“We didn’t get to come here in our uniforms, but we’re here now.” Miyano’s voice catches a little, but he doesn’t look away. He never does. " I-I really like that this is a memory only the two of us know about, Shuumei-san.”
Maybe it’s the salt in the air around them that makes Sasaki blink away the sting he suddenly feels in his eyes.
“There is one more memory we can make,” Sasaki says with his throat feeling tight. He places his free hand on Miyano’s cheek and leans down to catch his lips. Just like Miyano described, Sasaki can feel the slight tinge of salt when Miyano leans into the kiss and uses his free hand to hold on to Sasaki’s sleeve.
“Let’s come back again,” Miyano all but breathes when they pull apart just enough to talk. Sasaki runs his tongue over his lips, smiling at the mix of sea air and Miyano on his tongue. "I want to make a lot more memories with you.”
