Chapter 1: Bento

Chapter Text

As soon as Chanyeol orients himself after opening his eyes, he rushes to turn off his phone alarm where it vibrates underneath his pillow. He glances at Kyungsoo, who is still peacefully snoozing with a darling smile on his face, and breathes a sigh of relief. Leaving the covers behind, he blows a kiss toward his husband and sneaks into the bathroom. After, he heads to the kitchen. It’s still a bit dark outside, since Kyungsoo’s filming is rather early today.

As quietly as he can, Chanyeol opens up the fridge and cupboards to retrieve all the ingredients for the bento. It’s an adorable two-tiered box with penguin drawings dancing on the lid. He purchased it as soon as he saw it in the store, and figured he would just keep it as a novelty. He’s glad they’ll be getting real use out of it.

With steady hands, he chops up kimchi, pork, and onions for the fried rice. Then the sausages, into classic octopus shapes, and cherry tomatoes into halves. He fries the rice up quickly after adding seasonings, leaving that to cool. Chanyeol arranges the sausages, cherry tomatoes, and leftover broccoli just so. He makes messy gyeran-mari to add to the box as well. In goes the rice, and the finishing touches are peeled tangerines and a cookie. It looks darling, and he can’t help but snap a few pictures when he’s done.

He loves reading the comments on his sneaky lovestagram posts for Kyungsoo. They’ll probably be speculating on who the bento is for the moment he posts. Only about 15% of them are getting the identity right so far.

Chanyeol gets so distracted he yelps in surprise when a pair of strong arms wrap around his midsection.

“Geez! Kyungsoo, you scared me!” Chanyeol pouts even though he knows the other can’t see.

Kyungsoo’s morning voice is deep and throaty. “Sorry. But it’s early, why are you out of bed?”

“I made you something, but it’s a secret.” Chanyeol closes up and puts the bento into a bag that he ties off while Kyungsoo hangs onto him. “You don’t get to see it ‘til later.”

“Hmm?” He nuzzles his face into Chanyeol’s ticklish back. “Hiding things from me… Naughty.”

“Haha- Stop! Quit it!” Chanyeol says, laughing as he tries to get the other off of him. When he manages to face Kyungsoo, he peppers the other with kisses that have him laughing too.

“Clearly, you were cooking something,” Kyungsoo says when they come to their senses. “Is it for breakfast?”

“I’ll never tell.”

“Well, you’ll have to, because we gotta eat,” Kyungsoo says, amused.

“Fine, guess I couldn’t keep it secret for long,” Chanyeol says, feigning disappointment. He smiles widely, placing the lunch bag in Kyungsoo’s hands. “I made you this to take to work today.”

“Oh?” He opens it up, lifting the lid to see the top tier. “…It’s really adorable. Thank you, Chanyeol.”

“You’re welcome. Anything for the cutest husband ever!” Chanyeol smooches his temple loudly.

Kyungsoo’s fingers brush against his neck, and he stops in his tracks for a moment. His small thumb traces lines into his skin, and Chanyeol unconsciously holds his breath.

“I want to kiss you. But I haven’t brushed my teeth,” Kyungsoo murmurs. “I can’t believe you’d wake up early on an off day to make this for me.”

“I-I wanted to… I feel like you’re always the one cooking,” Chanyeol stutters.

“I think you deserve the title of cutest husband, really.” He kisses the corner of Chanyeol’s mouth. “I’ll wash up and come back. Stay here and wait for me.”

Chanyeol’s ears are red when the other lets him go.
