pull me closer, even when it hurts

Summary:

They kissed like they were trying to forget.
Fucked like they were trying to remember.
And in between? They studied, they fought, they learned how to talk again.

It’s soft. It’s toxic. It’s messy. It’s theirs.

Notes:

This fic is the slowest of burns, the softest of morning kisses, and the messiest of unresolved feelings all tangled in hoodie strings and unspoken tension. I wanted to write a version of Jeno and Jaemin who never stopped caring, just got too scared to say it out loud.

This is a love story. A difficult one. A healing one. One with thigh grinding during breaks and whispered I-miss-yous in the dark.

Thanks for reading, and please take care of your heart as you go. They sure don’t know how to.

Chapter 1: one.

Chapter Text

There are two kinds of silences on campus.

The first is a gentle one, like the one that settles in the library around midnight, when the only sounds are the occasional sighs of over-caffeinated students and the shuffling of papers already too late to be revised. The second is the kind that crackles. Electric and unbearable. Like a thunderstorm held back by a single glance.

That second kind was the one that filled the space between Jaemin and Jeno.

They sat side by side on the steps outside the lecture hall, too close for strangers, too distant for friends. The cold from the concrete bled into their jeans, and neither of them moved. The autumn wind rustled the leaves in agitated whispers. Jeno was staring out at the trees, jaw clenched, and Jaemin was staring at Jeno—his profile, his mouth, the tiny twitch beneath his eye that always showed up when he was pissed.

He hadn’t changed much. Still wore those clean white shirts like a religion, still carried that old film camera around his neck like a scar.

“You’re gonna break your silence record if you keep this up,” Jaemin said eventually, voice sweet and dangerous. “Three hours since you looked at me properly. Impressive.”

Jeno didn’t laugh. He didn’t even blink.

God, he was so good at this. At pretending Jaemin was just air. But Jaemin wasn’t good at being ignored. He thrived in attention, in heat, in things that burned and ached and bit back. And Jeno… Jeno had always been a slow-burning fire, the kind that killed you in your sleep.

“I’m not here for your games, Jaemin,” Jeno said, his voice low, dark velvet fraying at the edges.

Jaemin tilted his head, lips quirking. “No? That’s funny. You used to be good at playing them.”

Jeno looked at him then.

And it hurt.

Not in the obvious way, not like heartbreak in movies or songs. It was quieter, deeper. Like a splinter in the soul. Because it wasn’t hate in Jeno’s eyes, it was disappointment. And that was always worse.

“You don’t get to pretend we’re the same people anymore,” Jeno murmured. “Not after what you did.”

Jaemin flinched. Just slightly. Enough for Jeno to notice.

And there it was again—that flicker of something ugly and honest between them. That thing with sharp edges and soft centers. That thing neither of them could name.

They’d kissed. A few times. But never like that. One mistake, one drunken night in sophomore year. The party had been loud, the alcohol had been cheap, and Jaemin had worn that stupid silver chain Jeno always secretly hated. The kiss had been too soft, too long. Too much. And touch felt too intimate. And after that, everything had cracked.

Jeno pulled his camera from around his neck, fiddling with the lens like it gave him something to do, something safe to hold. “You still mess around with people’s hearts for fun, or did you finally start breaking your own?”

The words were cruel. They were meant to be.

Jaemin leaned in, a breath away now, smile gone, voice barely a whisper. “You think I don’t dream about that night? You think I don’t hate myself for ruining it?”

And there it was.

The truth, laid bare in the wind between them, trembling and bruised. Jeno’s breath hitched, fingers tightening on the camera. There was a pause, a long, weighted, devastating pause. Then Jaemin moved forward, so slowly it hurt to watch, and rested his forehead against Jeno’s shoulder.

“I’d let you break me,” he said softly. “If it meant you’d touch me like that again.”

Jeno closed his eyes. And for one second, just one, he didn’t pull away.

The rain started sometime after midnight.

It wasn’t romantic, not in the way movies sold it. It was brutal, wind-laced, frigid, the kind of rain that felt like it was trying to punish the world. And maybe it was. Maybe the sky had gotten tired of watching two idiots dance around each other like broken constellations. Maybe it wanted to wash something clean. Maybe it wanted to drown it all.

Jeno was halfway through editing a photo set when the knock came. Three short raps. Not polite. Not desperate. Just... decisive.

He stared at the door for a moment, wondering if he was imagining it. No one came to his room unannounced. He didn’t let people in. Not anymore.

But the knock came again. And Jeno knew. He didn’t know how, didn’t know why but his bones did. His breath did. His heart, that traitorous thing, started to sprint.

He opened the door.

Jaemin stood there, soaked through, hair clinging to his forehead, black hoodie sagging off one shoulder, jeans plastered to his skin. He looked like he’d just walked out of a nightmare. Or into one. His eyes were wide, glassy, like he wasn’t sure if this was a mistake or a prayer.

“Hi,” Jaemin said, voice raw.

Jeno didn’t answer. Just stepped aside.

The room was dimly lit, shadows curling in the corners like secrets. Jeno’s photos lined the walls. Blurry faces, soft mouths, hands holding nothing. He hadn’t taken a real picture of Jaemin in over a year. But he still carried one. Tucked deep in his desk drawer. Like a wound.

Jaemin stood awkwardly in the middle of the room, shivering, dripping rain onto the hardwood. He looked too real here. Too human. Like someone Jeno had only ever dreamed of touching again.

“I didn’t know where else to go,” Jaemin whispered. “Or maybe I did. Maybe this is the only place I ever wanted to end up.”

Jeno swallowed hard. He didn’t have the strength for this. For that mouth. For that voice. He grabbed a towel from his bed and tossed it at Jaemin without a word.

Jaemin caught it. Smiled faintly. “Still so generous, Lee Jeno. Even when you’re furious.”

“You’re not special,” Jeno muttered. “I’d do the same for a stray cat.”

Jaemin dropped the towel onto the floor. And then, bold and trembling, he peeled off the hoodie. It hit the floor with a wet slap. Beneath it, he wore nothing but a white tank top, soaked through and clinging to every curve of muscle, every breath, every sin.

Jeno’s eyes dragged over him like a curse.

“Do you ever stop performing?” Jeno asked, low and bitter.

“Only for you,” Jaemin said. “Only when I’m begging.”

Something snapped in the air.

Jeno moved before he could think. Crossed the room in two strides, grabbed Jaemin by the front of his shirt, and shoved him, not hard, not cruel, just enough to pin him to the wall, to feel him, to feel something.

Their faces were inches apart. Steam began to rise from their bodies as the cold rain met the heat radiating off of them.

“You want me to break you?” Jeno asked, breath hot on Jaemin’s lips. “You think I haven’t been dying to?”

Jaemin’s hands slid into Jeno’s hoodie, up under his shirt, greedy and trembling. “Then do it. Ruin me. But don’t you dare do it softly.”

Jeno kissed him.

It wasn’t gentle.

Their mouths crashed like waves in a storm: furious, desperate, uncoordinated in the way that came from too many unsaid things. Jeno’s hands gripped Jaemin’s hips like he was trying to memorize the shape of his regret. Jaemin arched into him, already panting, already hard.

“I fucking hate you,” Jeno muttered against his mouth.

“You say that every time you want me,” Jaemin gasped back, smiling, teeth sinking into Jeno’s lower lip.

Jeno didn’t laugh. He shoved Jaemin backwards until his back hit the wall again, and this time he ground against him, slow and deliberate, letting him feel it. Jaemin moaned, head tipping back, exposing his throat like a goddamn offering.

Jeno licked up the line of it, biting down hard just beneath Jaemin’s jaw.

“Take off your pants,” he ordered, voice rough, low like smoke.

Jaemin obeyed without a word, fingers fumbling with the button. The denim clung wetly to his thighs as he shoved it down, underwear along with it. He was flushed pink and trembling already, leaking at the tip, eyes hazy with want and something darker.

“You’re already this hard for me?” Jeno sneered, dropping to his knees like a prayer turned vicious. “You’re such a fucking mess.”

Jaemin laughed breathlessly, hand finding Jeno’s hair. “Then clean me up.”

And Jeno did.

He sucked him in deep with the ease of someone who’d fantasized about it for months, maybe years. His hands pressed into Jaemin’s thighs, fingers digging bruises into the flesh. Jaemin gasped, bucking forward, and Jeno didn’t stop him. Let him fuck into his mouth, moaning, cursing, begging.

“Fuck, Jeno—fuck, you feel so—”

Jeno pulled back with a wet pop, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand, smirking up at him. “You beg like a slut.”

“You fuck like a saint,” Jaemin shot back, grabbing Jeno’s hoodie, dragging him up again. “Come ruin me properly.”

Jeno shoved him down onto the bed, climbing over him, pinning his wrists above his head with one hand. The other dragged down Jaemin’s body, chest, stomach, thighs, slow and possessive. He stripped himself without ceremony, shirt tossed aside, sweats down in one harsh pull, revealing his own aching need. He lined up between Jaemin’s legs, grinding down once, slow and deliberate.

“No prep?” Jaemin whispered, shivering. “What if I break?”

Jeno leaned down, teeth grazing Jaemin’s ear. “You already did.”

And then he pushed in - raw, burning, overwhelming.

Jaemin cried out, arching off the bed, pain mixing with pleasure in a blur of white-hot sensation. Jeno didn’t stop. He drove in deep, slow, steady, stretching him open, making sure Jaemin felt everything.

Their bodies moved like fire catching dry wood; furious, consuming, inevitable.

Jaemin was clawing at Jeno’s back, legs wrapped around his waist, gasping his name like a curse, like a prayer. Jeno grunted with every thrust, sweat dripping down his neck, lips dragging over Jaemin’s collarbone, biting, sucking, leaving marks no one else would be allowed to see.

“Look at me,” Jeno hissed, hand grabbing Jaemin’s jaw. “I want to see your face when you come.”

Jaemin moaned, high, desperate. “Then fuck me harder.”

Jeno obliged. He slammed into him, again and again, building a brutal rhythm, the bed creaking beneath them, the room thick with heat and breath and the scent of them.

Jaemin shattered first, mouth falling open, eyes wide, cock untouched as he came between them, painting their stomachs with white. Jeno followed a heartbeat later, burying himself deep with a low, broken groan, hips jerking as he emptied himself inside.

And then—silence.

Not the cold kind. The gentle one. The kind that said, you’re safe now. Even if just for tonight.

Jeno collapsed beside him, breath ragged. Jaemin rolled to face him, brushing a hand over his chest, sticky with sweat and come. “Still hate me?”

Jeno didn’t answer. Just closed his eyes. Jaemin kissed his shoulder. Soft. Like forgiveness.

Morning arrived like a thief.

Not gentle. Not kind. Just there, brilliant and unforgiving, peeling back the shadows that had protected them for a few stolen hours.

Jeno woke first.

His sheets were tangled around their legs, the faint scent of sex and sweat still clinging to the air like a confession no one wanted to repeat. The sunlight sliced through the blinds, casting lines across Jaemin’s bare back, his skin marked with fading bruises, bite-shaped constellations blooming over his throat, shoulders, ribs.

Jeno stared.

Not because he didn’t already know that Jaemin was beautiful but because this Jaemin, quiet in his sleep, lashes fluttering against his cheeks, lips parted around slow, even breaths... he didn’t feel real. Not when he was like this.

Too soft. Too unguarded. Too much like the version of Jaemin that Jeno used to dream about during lectures, between bites of cheap convenience store sandwiches, in the passenger seat of Jaemin’s old scooter when he swore he wasn’t looking.

Jeno didn’t touch him. Just watched. And tried not to think about how warm the bed suddenly felt. How his heart didn’t ache with rage, but something worse: hope.

Then Jaemin shifted, mumbling something unintelligible, one arm flopping over Jeno’s waist with casual intimacy.

“You’re staring,” he croaked, still half-asleep.

“You’re in my bed,” Jeno replied.

Jaemin cracked one eye open, smirking. “So I am.”

He stretched, limbs long and loose and shameless, the sheets slipping lower on his hips.

Jeno rolled away, biting the inside of his cheek. “Don’t do that.”

“What?” Jaemin teased, sitting up and raking a hand through his hair. “I’m just stretching. You should’ve seen your face.”

“Stop performing. I’m not the audience you think I am.”

Jaemin’s smirk faltered but only for a second. Then his phone buzzed. Jeno watched as he reached for it on the nightstand, thumbs swiping across the screen. He didn’t mean to look. He didn’t care. He shouldn’t care.

But he saw the name anyway.

MINHO:

You coming tonight? Don’t ghost me again.

Jaemin didn’t reply. Just locked the screen and set the phone face-down.

Jeno’s throat tightened. His voice was flat when he asked, “So who’s Minho?”

Jaemin blinked. “That’s not your business.”

“Right.” Jeno got up, grabbing boxers from the floor. “Of course not. I’m just the guy who fucked you into a mattress last night.”

“You didn’t just fuck me,” Jaemin said softly.

Jeno turned, eyes sharp. “Don’t do that.”

“What?”

“Don’t make this mean something.”

Jaemin stood too, wrapping the sheet around his waist like armor. “It already does. You just don’t want it to.”

Jeno laughed; cold, bitter. “You think I forgot what you did last year? You think I forgot you kissed me and then ghosted me for a month?”

“I was scared,” Jaemin snapped, the mask finally cracking. “You make me feel like I’m not enough. Like I’ll never be enough.”

“Well, you’re not,” Jeno hissed, instantly regretting it, but not enough to take it back.

Jaemin flinched.

A long silence.

Then Jaemin nodded slowly, picking up his clothes from the floor.

“Got it.”

He dressed without looking at Jeno. Every movement tight. Every breath a little more controlled. That old performance sliding back into place like a familiar suit. Jeno sat on the edge of

the bed, watching the space where Jaemin had just stood.

“You’ll call Minho back?” he asked quietly.

Jaemin didn’t answer. He walked to the door, then paused, hand on the handle.

“I loved you,” he said.

Past tense. And then he was gone.
