Work Text:
Anakin Skywalker was never part of the creche. He became a Padawan as soon as he entered the Jedi Order. And so he has no idea what the crechemasters are capable of.
He hears idle references to the 'right of life' that they hold, and dismisses it as a fancy way to refer to childcare. If that explanation doesn't always make sense, well, the Jedi don't always make sense and he is speaking as someone who has lived as one of them from childhood.
So when a toddler runs into his path as he dispatches Cin Drallig, he thinks little of it or the Bothan crechemaster scurrying after it.
He does idly lash his saber in the toddler's general direction. The crechemaster catches it with the Force.
Beginners luck.
Her voice is cold, and her eyes look right through him as her free hand goes to the hilt at her waist. "Anakin Skywalker."
"Darth Vader." He corrects. Obi-Wan has always impressed on him the importance of keeping such interactions proper.
The crechemaster's face hardens further. "Darth Vader. I invoke the right of life held by all crechemasters and claim the opportunity to fulfill it in the sight of the Force."
Drallig, from his position on the ground, holding his guts inside his body, manages to croak a barely audible, 'heard and witnessed."
That seems to be all the crechemaster was waiting for. She explodes into action, launching herself at him with a...what even is that?
It is a familiar shade of green, and he can recognise the hilt, but who uses a lightwhip in this day and age?
He lasts less than a minute.
His last thought is sheer embarrassment coupled with disbelief that a crechemaster, a soft non-combatant who spends her days caring for children, has defeated him - one of the Order's greatest generals.
Well, his second last thought.
His true last thought is simply - ow

The Fallen Jedi collapses to the ground in pieces. Master Vih'ren purses her lips as she stares at him, the whip whooshing back into it's hilt. She re-attaches it to her belt, kneeling to pick up the toddler she had abandoned for the duration of the fight. "What a waste."
When she returns to the creche, she pulls aside one of the elder crechemasters and they have a whispered conversation in the brief moments before she has to dive away to catch a child who hasn't quite mastered jumping safely yet.
The elder crechemaster talks to another, and another, and another. Eventually, one finds another who has a free hour.
He slips out with a Temple Guard friend for precisely fifty-seven minutes to meet with a friend in the Coruscant Guard. They return just in time for his shift with Bear Clan to begin.
By the time Obi-Wan Kenobi reaches Coruscant is to find the Temple fortified and the planet in utter disarray.
Chancellor Palpatine declared the Jedi traitors to the Republic backed by the clone army who are hunting them down and then disbanded the Republic in favour of an empire with him at its head.
Five minutes later, Palpatine is dead, the clone army is insistent that the Jedi are the true heroes, and no one is sure whether they are a Republic or an Empire.
Obi-Wan reaches the Temple just as Mas Amedda makes a short-lived attempt to declare himself the new emperor. He's shot in the head by Commander Fox who is having the best day of his life.
Inside the Temple, Obi-Wan finds the wing belonging to the Healers overflowing with injured Jedi and clones.
Master Nema is working with Mace, who was brought in by Commander Stone. He's missing a hand and is chock full of Sith lightening. Everyone suspects the late Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine's hand in that but Mace hasn't regained consciousness long enough to confirm yet.
Bant emerges from surgery long enough to reassure him that Agen and Saesee are fine. It was touch and go with Kit, but if he lives through the night she is confident he will recover completely.
Then Master Che takes him aside and explains that there was some sort of mind control over the troops which had forced them to turn on the Jedi.
Now everything makes sense - Obi-Wan had wondered why Cody had suddenly decided that a measly hundred-metre drop could kill him.
Really, it had been almost insulting. He'd been jumping from cruisers in upper atmospheres at thirteen, a simple cliff is nothing. Cody's seen him deal with worse before breakfast and morning meditation without breaking a sweat.
If Cody had not been in control of himself, it makes a lot more sense.
It also explains why his men, who pride themselves on their marksmanship, had missed him so very badly. Obi-Wan is grateful but he is also never going to let them live it down. Really, he was waving a sword of light, that's got to be such an easy target.
The relief is so great that it buoys him up past learning that Anakin had Fallen and tried to kill everyone he had ever loved.
Or maybe it's the fact that he doesn't have time to breathe with the Senate trying to arrest the crechemaster responsible for assassinating Chancellor/Emperor Palpatine.
Head Crechemaster Oharan takes over a week into the debates. He points them to the section in literally every law code of the galaxy stating that Jedi in general are allowed to kill Sith and crechemasters in particular are allowed to kill any threat to their charges. Without question.
The Senate shuts up. Master Vih'ren and the Crechemaster and Guard who got Champeror Palpatine all get medals.
The rest of the galaxy gets a healthy fear of crechemasters. Everyone in the Temple gets a nap and some peace and quiet for the first time in years.
