Work Text:
Wayne Manor – The South Wing – 4:17 A.M.
The hallway outside Damian’s room was silent—except for the faint whir of cameras pivoting ever so slightly.
Bruce stood watch.
Not because of danger.
Because of a nightmare.
No one else had heard it. Not Alfred. Not the AI.
But Bruce had felt it—the way the air shifted, the brief scratch of movement against the sheets, the slight irregularity in the heart rate feed on the wall monitor.
He opened the door without knocking.
Damian was crouched in the corner of the room, knees pulled to his chest. Drenched in sweat. His blade was drawn but discarded on the floor—useless in this enemy.
Bruce didn’t say a word.
He just knelt in front of him, slow, careful.
Damian didn’t look up.
But he reached out.
Three fingers.
Bruce met them.
Three fingers back.
Their unspoken code:
> You’re here. I see you. You’re safe.

Flashback – First Month at the Manor
Damian hadn’t spoken.
Not once.
Alfred had tried patience. Dick had tried games. Tim had tried silence.
But only Bruce had tried watching.
And when Damian screamed during a thunderstorm—not with sound, but with a drawn knife and a barricade of furniture around his bed—Bruce hadn’t scolded him.
He sat outside the room all night.
No words.
Just presence.
The next morning, Damian placed a small origami bat on Bruce’s desk.

Present – Gotham – Rooftop – A Fight Gone Wrong
The mission had spiraled.
Damian was bruised. Bleeding. His knuckles raw.
They perched on the edge of the GCPD roof, under the red haze of sirens below.
Bruce tried to speak. “You disobeyed.”
Damian didn’t flinch.
He just pressed his fingers to his own wrist—twice, then splayed.
> I knew the risk.
Bruce exhaled slowly.
“You could’ve died.”
Damian stared forward.
Then tapped Bruce’s chest with the edge of his knuckle.
Then his own.
> Yours. Mine.
Bruce closed his hand over Damian’s.
And held it.

Wayne Manor – Study – Confrontation
Tim stood beside the desk, frustrated.
“He doesn’t respond to half the mission briefings. He avoids Alfred during meals. He watches everyone like we’re about to poison him. Bruce, he needs structure.”
“He has structure,” Bruce said.
“You’re coddling him.”
Bruce stood.
Tim stepped back. Slightly.
“I’m adapting to his structure,” Bruce said evenly. “He’s not broken. He’s a weapon that never had a home. And now he does.”
Tim hesitated.
“But what if he never adjusts?”
Bruce stared at the family portrait on the desk.
“Then we do.”

Damian’s Room – That Night – The Drawing
Bruce entered quietly.
Damian was sitting at his desk, face lit by the soft glow of a single lamp.
He turned.
Held up a drawing—rough charcoal lines, careful shadows.
It was Bruce.
Wearing the cape.
But behind him, a small bat—half-crouched, silent, gloved hands ready.
And at the corner of the page, Damian had written one word:
> “Ours.”

Epilogue – Gotham Underground – Enemy Captured
The assassin had tried to bait Damian.
Mock his silence.
Call him “feral.”
Laugh when he didn’t speak.
Bruce broke the man’s arm.
Then knelt beside Damian and signed:
> You don’t need words to be understood.
Damian pressed his fingers to Bruce’s palm again.
> Never needed.
