Chapter Text
The carriage rustled on the rubble road as the Upland family of the Upper Uplands made their way to the Emerald city. Glinda could barely contain her excitement as she stared out the window.
Â
âExcited darling?â Lady Larena Upland asked her grinning daughterÂ
Â
âOh momsie, you have no idea! This can be my chance to meet my perfect match! I hope they sweep me off my feetâ Glinda blushed âdo you think theyâll be a Duke, like you, father? Oh! Or maybe even a prince!â
Â
âThereâll be many suitors fighting for your hand sweetie, Iâm sure of it.â Lord Highmuster Arduenna chuckled âspeaking of dashing princes, I heard the prince of the Vinkus will be in attendanceâ
Â
âI heard that the Kingâs daughter will be in attendance as well.â Lady Upland gushed to her husband
Â
âHis daughter? The princess will be in attendance?â
Â
âApparently so. The King is in search of a suitable suitor for her. She recently presented as an Alphaâ
Â
âAlpha?â Glinda chimed in
Â
âYes, the poor thing presented terribly late and probably suffered a dreadful rut. Oh I do hope it wasnât too painful for herâ Lady Upland said as she pitied the princess
Â
âAh nonsense, the King most likely hired the best of Omega whores to help the princess through her first rutâ Lord Highmuster Arduenna waved his hand about
Â
Glinda squirmed in her seat at the implication
Â
Lady Upland gave her lord husband a slap on his arm. âDonât speak of such foulness in front of our daughterâ
Â
Lord Arduenna had the decency to look a little apologetic as he turned to look at his daughter, who stayed quiet. âSorry sweetie⌠sometimes my mouth gets the best of meâŚâ
Â
âItâs alright popsicle, after all, isnât it normal for alphas to spend their ruts with omegas?â Glinda asked
Â
âW-Well- yes but itâs normal for alphas to spend their ruts with their claimed omegas. Itâs frowned upon straying away from their marital bed and into the legs of another... Although⌠the princess isnât marriedâ
Â
âYetâ
Â
âYet⌠but itâs often preferable if both alpha and omega goes to their marital bed untouched and pureâ
Â
Lady Upland scoffed âAlphas rarely go into the marital bed, a virgin. Theyâre always spending their time in brothels and whorehousesâ
Â
Lord Arduenna frowned âbut I was untouched when we both laid on our marital bedâ
Â
âYes I know, but youâre an exception because youâre a beta but itâs almost common knowledge that alphas are rarely ever pure.â
Â
âDearest, I thought we werenât going to speak about such foulness in front of our daughterâ Lord Arduenna reminded his dear wife
Â
Lady Upland looked sheepishly at Glinda âsorry sweetheart, itâs just⌠youâre an omega- a pure one at that, but alphas can be such brutes... I do hope you find a caring and thoughtful alpha or beta. I want the utmost happiness for you and your future family.âÂ
Â
Glinda gave her mother a small smile âI knowâ
Â
âBesides, these alphas and betas are the finest of our society. They have a sense of duty and pride, and they know how to treat an omega properlyâ Lord Arduenna placed his hand on Glindaâs knee âI know youâll make the right choice, sweetieâ
Â
Glinda smiled and then looked back out of the window and saw the Emerald city come into view.
Â
***
Â
King Oscar, the Great and Terrible was hosting the first ball of the season and the Ton was bustling with excitement as the doors of the palace opened. The King rarely ever made an appearance, even rarer, his daughter. But with her new development, it brought in excited omegas and betas in a race to win her hand and have their blood on the throne of Oz.
Â
There were a handful of new debutantes making their mark in the marriage market and Glinda was one of them. The blonde had put on the best dress she owned and had her maids perfectly sculpture her face with delicate makeup to impress any future suitors.
Â
Once the Uplandâs carriage arrived in front of the Emerald palace, Glinda was carefully guided out by a doorsman. Glinda looked up at the looming palance in awe. People from all over Oz had come to make their matches and see the infamous King.
Â
âGlinda!â A pair of voices squealed from behind her. Pfannee and ShenShen hastened their way towards the blonde
Â
âPfannee! ShenShen! Oh my, youâre here!â Glinda grinned as she hugged her friends âI hope the trip wasnât too difficultâ
Â
ShenShen groaned as she rubbed her neck âthank the heavens I donât have to sit in that carriage anymoreâ
Â
âRight? It was so bumpy! It got my head in a frazzleâ Pfannee pouted. âWe should make haste so we can see all the bachelors and bachelorettes in attendance. I need to lay my claim quickâ
Â
ShenShen giggled as she bumped her shoulder to Pfanneeâs shoulder âIâm surprised you havenât been married off yetâ ShenShen whispered to the beta
Â
âThose suitors are simply not good enough. Though Iâm hoping on digging my claim onto a certain prince in attendanceâ Pfannee smirked
Â
âGlinda! We have to prepare you for the debut!â Lord Arduenna and Lady Upland called out for their daughter
Â
âIt seems like itâs time to get ready for my big debut. Shall I see you both inside?â Glinda asked her friends
Â
âOf course! We canât wait to see you make every suitor in there, buckle down to their kneesâ ShenShen teasedÂ
Â
âIâm already on my knees for some of these suitors,â Pfannee whispered as he looked around.
Â
Glinda giggled âthatâs utterly scandalous â
Â
âGlinda! Come, we must make haste!â Lady Upland walked over and quickly took Glindaâs hand.
Â
***
âThis hat is itchy, itâs not even fashionableâ Glinda pouted as she adjusted the feathery hat on her hand. âThis makes me feel like an auctioned animal being sold to the highest bidderâ
Â
âIn a way it is, dearest. You have to make a good impression on the King so more suitors would look favorably upon you.â Lady Upland told her daughter as she removed Glindaâs hands from her hat. âMaybe⌠the princess will be thereâ
Â
Glinda smirked âitâll only be a matter of time before I have her eating out of the palm of my handâ
Â
Lady Upland raised an eyebrowÂ
Â
âOr prince. Iâll try not to be too choosy â Glinda flicked her hair over her shoulder
Â
âCome, we have to go line up with the rest of the new debutantes.â Lady Upland said as she escorted her daughter out and onto the group of young anxious ladies.
Â
Glinda looked around her fellow debutantes and recognized some of them, though Glinda was only interested in two of them. There was Lady Hardings with her newly presented omega daughter Milla. She was comely with her flowing raven hair and rosy cheeks. Her family was wealthy as well, most likely to have a huge Dowry to make any suitor salivate. Then there was Lady Caravan with her omega daughter, Sarima. She was beautiful. Her hair perfectly framed her face and her body had curves that would make any suitor stop in their tracks. They were her two biggest competitorsÂ
Â
But then there was a lone debutant that caught her eye. Miss Nessarose Thropp, beta daughter of Duke Thropp. A tragically beautiful girl who has lost her mother young and was forever bonded to a chair after a devastating accident. Glinda felt pity for the young girl and hoped she would find a suitable match of her own.
Â
A kingâs guard opened a door and an older woman stepped out. Her hairstyle screamed elegance, her posture demanded respect and her eyes were sharp as she observed the young ladies. She stayed quiet as her eyes closely studied the nervous debutantes.Â
Â
The woman then walked up to Miss Sarima and placed her hand on the girlâs chin. âTeethâ
Â
âH-Huh-?â Sarima blinked confusedlyÂ
Â
âShow me your teethâ the woman said again
Â
Sarima gave the older woman a nervous smile that showed off her perfectly pearly white teeth. The older woman let out a satisfied hum. âGood teeth. Perhaps youâll be a suitable match for her highness, the princess.â The woman said as she removed her hand and continued down the line.
Â
The woman quickly passed by other debutantes before lingering on Miss Milla. âHmm⌠comely. Youâll also make doâ the woman merely said as she again continued down the line.
Â
Then the woman stopped in front of Glinda. Glinda gave her a bright smile that showed off her own teeth and dimples. The woman wrinkled her nose and walked past her. Glindaâs smile fell and turned to look at her mother and saw the flabbergasted expression on her face.Â
Â
The woman continued to observe the rest of the debutantes before finally stopping at the last debutante. Miss Nessarose.
Â
âItâs ever a pleasure to see you, Miss Nessarose. I do hope the journey wasnât too troublesome.â The woman softly said to the girl in the chair
Â
âIt wasnât at all, Lady Morrible. I did enjoy some of the fresh air the journey offered.â The girl responded. âThe journey was worth all the troubles now that Iâm here. I canât wait to experience the Kingâs ball and I do hope in seeing my sister soonâ
Â
âSheâs excited to see you as well. Sheâll be with you in just a moment but first we must do the debutsâÂ
Â
âOf course. Shall we?â
Â
âOf course. Ladies! Line up!â Lady Morrible shouted as she grabbed all the girlsâ attention. âListen for your name and present yourselves to your King and the court! Do present yourself favorably and just maybe youâll have a chance to find a spouseâ Lady Morrible said before she walked out of the room
Â
The girls quickly filed in line with their mothers by their side. Then names were called out and each girl individually walked through the doors as their mothers watched from the sidelines. Once a handful of girls had gone, Miss Milla was called and she walked through the opened doors. Glinda stood on her tippy toes to catch a glimpse of what to expect. She could barely make out the row of Lordy fathers and sires anxiously awaiting for their own daughters to present themselves. On the other side, she sees formally dressed suitors scaling up each debutante. Then the doors shuts before she could see straight ahead
Â
âNow, dearest. Your turn will come soon enoughâ her mother tried to reassure her
Â
âI know momsie, I was a little curious, thatâs allâ Glinda whispered as she went back down
Â
âMiss Sarima of house Caravan!â A Kingâs guard announces. Sarima firmly placed her arms to her sides, clenched her jaw, looked forward and walked out the opened door
Â
âThat one looked steadfastâ her mother whispered into her ear
Â
âYeah, steadfast on leaving this place before the ball even startsâ Glinda whispered back. âDoes she not realize how great this opportunity is? Finding an ideal match in one of the greatest societies there is?â
Â
âPerhaps sheâs simply nervous, dearest. I surely was when I had my own debutâ
Â
âWell, good thing I left my nerves back at home. This season I shall find my spouse and be contentâÂ
Â
âIt appears that youâre the one who is steadfast, dearestâ her mother teased
Â
âI am simply determined to find a reasonable mate, motherâ
Â
âMiss Glinda Arduenna Upland of the upper Uplands!â The Kingâs guard announced.
Â
The doors opened again but this time, Glinda was the one walking through them. Glinda straightened her back and placed a bright smile on her lips before she walked through the doors. Looking straight ahead, she can see a tall man sitting on a throne, with gray hair and with a goatee. He had on a polished dark green tailcoat that perfectly fit his frame and had a black vest underneath. Glinda could make out the golden pocket watch hidden in his pocket and golden buttons that were on his vest. King Oscar
Â
Next to him was the woman from earlier. Lady Morrible. What was her deal?
Â
Then she saw the empty seat on the other side of the King. The princess wasnât here
Â
Glinda couldnât help but feel a little disappointed on not seeing this mysterious princess but sheâll have to make do.
Â
Once she finally stood in front of the King, Glinda gave him a small bow. âYour Majestyâ
Â
âMiss Glindaâ the Kingâs voice echoed through the quiet roomÂ
Â
Glinda lifted her head and smiled at the King. âYes, your Majesty?â
Â
âIt is an honor to have your family come and visit us for this joyous season. Our families go way back when, do we not?â
Â
âI believe so, your Majesty. My great-grandfather helped your grandfather on reclaiming the throne, if I remembered correctlyâ Glinda answered with a perfectly clear voice
Â
âHm, it appears your memory has served you well. I have always been fond of your family and I do wish you the best of luck in finding your desired mate. You may go now, Glindaâ The King gave Glinda a small smile before dismissing her.
Â
Glinda bowed again before she walked to where her father stood.Â
Â
âYou did perfectly, sweetieâ her father whispered into her ear as they both watched the next debutante make her way to the King
Â
âThank you father. I do hope he likes me, then perhaps Iâll catch the princessâs attention, wherever she may beâÂ
***
The ball was in a full swing
Â
The music was playing beautifully and the food was fresh. The suitors were growing more bold as the party continued and started asking some of the debutants for a dance. The King and Lady Morrible stood at the end of the room and closely studied each of the debutantsÂ
Â
âThe King sure does know how to treat his citizensâ Pfannee said as he sip on his glass of wine
Â
â Obviously, this ball is his chance of finding a match for the princessâ ShenShen said as she looked around
Â
âBut, one canât help but wonder where this princess isâ Glinda said as she bit her lip. â Where could she be? â
Â
Pfannee gasped âdo you think sheâs horribly disfigured?!â
Â
âOr perhaps she is ill? Or not of a sound mind?â ShenShen questionedÂ
Â
âNonsense. She is the princess â Glinda said as she watched a suitor approach their small group
Â
The man walked up to them and placed a hand out to Glinda. âMiss Glinda. Will you do me the honor of having this dance with me?â
Â
Glinda raised an eyebrow before Pfannee leaned in and whispered into her ear âthatâs alpha Viscount Avaric Tenmeadows. He works under your father, Duke Highmuster Arduennaâ
Â
Glinda hummed before she placed her hand on Avaricâs hand. âLet us dance, shall we?â
Â
Avaric smiled as he led her to the middle of the room. He then placed a hand on her waist and the other tightly clasped onto her hand. Glinda placed her hand on his shoulder and gave him a charming smile. Then the music started playing again and they started dancing as the surrounding pairs started waltzingÂ
Â
Avaric lend into her ear and whispered. âYou look lovely this evening, Miss Glindaâ
Â
Glinda could smell his scent. It wasnât pleasant. âThank you, Lord Tenmeadowsâ
Â
âPlease, call me Avaric. Weâre acquaintances after allâ
Â
âI suppose we are, arenât we?â Glinda answered as she tried not to smell his fetid scent
Â
âYes, I have worked with your father for a handful of years. I remember when you were about the height of my hipsâ Avaric chuckled
Â
That wonât do âright⌠pray tell, what is your age again? I must know for any⌠future childrenâ
Â
âIâm one and thirty years of age. Perfectly healthy to produce a litter of children. Especially with someone like you â Avaric smirked
Â
Then the dance ended as the music ceased. Glinda let out a relieved sigh before she gave Avaric a polite smile. âThank you for the dance, Avaricâ
Â
âItâs been my pleasure. I hope we could dance again soonâÂ
Â
âSoonâŚâ Glinda nodded before she walked to where her friends were
Â
âGlinda! How was it?â ShenShen grinnedÂ
Â
âIt wasâŚâ
Â
âIt was what?! Donât leave us in suspense!â Pfannee squeakedÂ
Â
âIt was pleasantâŚ?â
Â
âPleasant? Thatâs all? You didnât feel swooned? â Pfannee questionedÂ
Â
Glinda pouted âhis scent was distasteful to me. I almost couldnât stand it!â
Â
âOh heavens, thatâs not goodâ ShenShen whispered. âPerhaps try your luck with a beta?â
Â
âMost of these betas are Barons.â Glinda rolled her eyes. âI need someone closer to my statusâ
Â
âOf course. Though, should we mingle with the other debutants? Gaining friends can help your chances into finding a better matchâ Pfannee suggests as he tilts his head
Â
âI do believe Miss Milla is dancing with Lord Ashworth and Miss Olivia is dancing with Lady Agatha at the momentâÂ
Â
Glinda looked back at the middle of the room and saw the pairs dancing with each other. Lord Ashworth was a respectable Marquess but his family was in some scandals not too long ago. Something about his younger beta brother fathering about a dozen bastards. Lady Agatha was a widowed alpha who had lost her omega wife in childbirth and was most likely looking for a younger omega to claim. Glinda knew that they were some suitors to avoid.Â
Â
Out of the corner of her eye, she can see Miss Sarima with her parents standing on the side. Her sire, Lady Ethel Caravan was a mere baroness and her wife, a commoner. But they seemed happy in their marriage which produced about six girls. Though with six girls, that would mean six individual Dowries for each girl if they presented as an omega or beta. And Glinda knew that the baroness wasnât exactly swimming in money
Â
âLetâs go and conversate with Miss Sarima, shall we? She looks dreadfully boredâ Glinda said as she tossed her hair over her shoulder and started walking to where Sarima stood. Pfannee and ShenShen quickly followed Glinda.
Â
Glinda stood next to Sarima and gave her a warm smile. Sarima just looked hesitant as her eyes landed on Glinda before it flickered towards the two betas behind her.
Â
âUmm⌠can I help you?â Sarima asked. Her voice, sweet like honey. She would have no problem claiming a respectable and high ranking suitor in no time. Glinda couldnât help but feel a bit envious at the low effort Sarima presented
Â
âWhy Miss Sarima, I came here and thought we can become friendsâ Glinda giggled and then leaned in. âWould you like to become a friend?â
Â
Sarimaâs eyebrows raised at the invitation. She bit her lip as she thought about the offer. Glinda can smell the sweet scent that she gave off. She had no doubt that her scent was a sirenâs call for any alpha.Â
Â
âOkayâŚâ Sarima weakly agreed
Â
âGreat! Come letâs go and mingle with the other omegasâ Glinda happily said as she wrapped her arm around Sarimaâs arm and pulled her along.
Â
Once the dance ended, Glinda quickly gathered some other debutantes and formed a small group. âSo ladies! and Allenâ Glinda greeted the omegas. âPray tell, which suitors are you hoping on laying your claim?â Glinda whispered to the other giddy omegas
Â
âOh, Lady Hill is so charming!â Miss Elizabeth swooned as she fanned her faceÂ
Â
âLord Davis has this look in his eye whenever he looks at meâŚâ The only male omega, Allen blushed. âDo you think heâs interested?â
Â
âOh definitely, youâre the only male omega this season. And I heard that he has a fondness for the more rougher sexâ Pfannee chimed in
Â
âWhat about Lord Clarke? Heâs a newly presented alpha and his scent is so good â Miss Lily blushedÂ
Â
âMiss Glinda, you danced with Lord Tenmeadows, how was it?â Miss Milla asked
Â
The rest of the omegas looked at Glinda, awaiting her responseÂ
Â
Glinda cleared her throat and tossed her hair over her shoulder. âHe was ever a gentleman and pleasantâ
Â
âWere you swooned?â Miss Milla asked
Â
âLadies, thereâs certainly more fish in the sea to choose fromâ Glinda deflected
Â
âI supposeâŚ. Did you hear about that Baron who fell down the stairs before the ball?â Miss Lily asked the other omegasÂ
Â
âA Baron falling down the stairs? Oh I would pay good money to see that!â ShenShen laughed
Â
âI heard it was a Baron from Munchkinlandâ Allen giggled
Â
âSpeaking of Munchkinland, have you seen the Duke of Munchkinlandâs daughter?â Miss Elizabeth whispered to the group
Â
âWho?â Pfannee asked
Â
Miss Elizabeth sneakily pointed towards where Nessarose and her father were. â Her â
Â
âOh, itâs tragic what happened to herâ Glinda sympathized as she placed a hand over her heart
Â
âOh Miss Glinda, you have a heart of gold. So caring about othersâ Lord Allen praisedÂ
Â
Glinda waved her hand âoh itâs nothing, honestly. Heaven knows the struggles she has to go through on a daily basisâ
Â
âI bet. And her bastard sister? I wonder where she even is-â
Â
âPrince Fiyero Tigelaar of the Vinkus!â A Kingâs guard announced as a man strutted into the room. The Prince was tall and confident as his charming smile started wooing some of the omegas in the room. His presence was powerful, and so was his scent.
Â
âHeâll doâ Glinda whisperedÂ
Â
Glinda smoothed out any wrinkles on her dress and perfected her hair before she glided towards the Prince.Â
Â
The Prince had noticed her and sized her up. âMy. What a lovely darling you areâ he said as he gently took her hand and placed a kiss on her knuckles.
Â
âYouâre making me blush, my Princeâ Glinda said as she fluttered her eyelashesÂ
Â
âI merely state a factâ the Prince said as he pulled back. âWould you like to have a dance with me?â
Â
âItâll be an honorâ
Â
The Prince guided Glinda back towards the middle of the room where the dance floor was. He respectfully placed his hand on her waist as Glinda placed a hand on his shoulder. He was much more pleasant than Lord Tenmeadows. His scent wasnât as dreadful, she might even tolerate it. Heâs her ideal match, he was her prince and he was perfect.Â
Â
âMay I ask, where are you from?âÂ
Â
âIâm Glinda Arduenna Upland from the upper Uplandsâ Glinda proudly saysÂ
Â
âI think Iâve heard of the UplandsâÂ
Â
âMy mother is an Upland, my father is Duke Highmuster Arduenna. I am the heir to both titles.â
Â
âImpressiveâ The Prince nodded approvingly
Â
The music ceased and the dancing came to a stop.
Â
âI do hope we will be able to dance again, Miss Glindaâ The Prince whispered into her ear
Â
âIâll keep my dance card open just for you, my Princeâ Glinda whispered back
Â
The Prince smiled before he gave her knuckles one more kiss before walking off
Â
The group of debutantes stared at her with their jaws open.
Â
âWhat? Itâs only naturalâ Glinda smiled as she tossed her hair over her shoulder. âI think he likes meâ
Â
âYou think?! Heâs planning to propose!â Miss Lily said as she kept looking at the Prince
Â
âHe might as well dropped down to one knee right thereâ Pfannee teased
Â
Glinda grinned as she watched the debutantes looked at her with awe and flanked her with questions. But then she noticed how Miss Sarima stayed quiet and just⌠observed her. It made her feel a bit unnervedÂ
Â
âWell, I have to tingle. Does anyone know where the lavatories are?â Glinda askedÂ
Â
âI think I saw one down the hall. I can come along with you if you will likeâ ShenShen offered
Â
Glinda shook her head âIâll be fine on my own. You stay here with the other ladies and Allen. Iâll haste back soon enoughâ
Â
ShenShen opened her mouth but then shut it. âOkay, but just be careful, who knows what these alphas would doâ
Â
âOf course, donât miss me too much!â Glinda laughed as she walked out of the room.
Â
***
Â
The palace was almost like a maze. There was no lavatory down the hall so Glinda walked even further down the hallway. But then the hallway split into two hallways. Glinda frowned and chose to go to the left hallway. There was not a soul in sight, and it was a little unnerving by the quietness but this was the Kingâs palace so she had nothing to fear. She kept on walking down the hallway until she reached the door that was at the end of it.Â
Â
â Finally â Glinda sighed as she reached for the doorknob and turned it. She opened the door and realized that the room was in fact, not a lavatory.
Â
The room was illuminated by soft candles and the moon light that shone through the windows on the sphere roof. The walls were lined up with paintings and shelves of books. In the middle of the room, there was a wooden platform that had a large object that Glinda didnât know. On the wooden platform, stood a tall woman who was leaning in the foreign object and peaking into it
Â
âNessa, I said I wasnât going to affiliate myself with the partygoers my father has brought tonight. I have more important things to attend toâ the woman said without looking up from the object. Her voice was smooth as silk and Glindaâs heart skipped a beat. Glinda walked closer and then she could smell the womanâs scent.Â
Â
Her scent was not overpowering but rather, comforting and soft. But was she a beta or omega? Or even an alpha? Glinda couldnât tell but the scent still made Glindaâs knees weak and her mouth water. Glinda felt her heart pound as she took a step on the wooden platform and walked closer to the woman.
Â
The woman frowned as she sensed a presence behind her and turned around. Her eyes widened as her eyebrows shot up âW-who are you? â
Â
âI- I- um-â Glinda stuttered as her eyes landed on the womanâs face. Her long wavy raven hair was tied into a long braid. Her jaw was chiseled, her nose was straight and her high cheekbones were well defined. Her eyes were a deep hazel color and her tan skin⌠her tan skin had⌠patches? There was a patch of an almost thyme color on the bottom left of her jaw that spilled onto her neck. There was another patch of the discolored skin on her temple on the right side of her face. Â
Â
âA-are you another prostitute my father h-hired?â The woman said, mortified. âI had told him I do not find such pleasures in those activitiesâ
Â
â Prostitute?! â Glinda shouted
Â
The woman winced. â Shhhh! Not so loudâ
Â
âI am no prostitute! I am a lady!â
Â
âOkay, b-but where is your chaperone?â
Â
âMy chaperone?â
Â
âItâs highly inappropriate for you to be alone without a chaperoneâ
Â
âWell, I didnât think I would need to have a chaperone with me while I try to find a lavatory in this humongous place! I live in a 57 room mansion but this is a little too much, even for me. I mean- what even is this place?â Glinda asked as she looked around
Â
âUm- this is my observatoryâ the woman admits as she looks down at her fidgeting hands. She had patches there too
Â
âAnd the weird skinny looking cannon?â
Â
âThat is my telescopeâ
Â
âA tele- what?â
Â
âA telescope. Have you never seen one before?â
Â
Glinda frowned. âNo actually. What does it do?â
Â
The woman smiled âwell, you can see the stars and the planets through thisâ
Â
âBut⌠can you not just do that by looking up at the sky?â Glinda asked as she looked up at the windows on the sphere roof and saw the starry nightÂ
Â
âYes, but the telescope can make you see it closely. Like if it was there in front of your eye. Itâs absolutely fascinating â The woman said as she adjusted the lenses on the âtelescopeâ before turning back to Glinda. âWill you like to see?â
Â
Glinda bit her lip as she debated whether or not to stay with this mysterious woman and her telescope. Glinda saw the genuine interest in her hazel eyes and couldnât resist it as she nodded and stepped closer to the woman. She smiled as she guided Glinda to the lenses
Â
âClose one eye and peek through with the other oneâ the woman said as she gently lowered Glindaâs head towards the lensesÂ
Â
Glinda peeked through the lenses and saw a bright white-yellow ball in it. âWhat is that?â Glinda stared with awe
Â
âThat is the planet Venusâ the woman whispered into her ear. Glinda could feel the heat radiating from the woman behind her
Â
âV-Venus? The planet Venus?â
Â
âYes, Iâve been studying itâÂ
Â
âOh my wordâ Glinda whispered as she continued to looked at the planet through the telescopeÂ
Â
âYou see, a rare occurrence is coming. Venus will travel in a specific arc and give us a single moment to take precise measurements and we shall know the distance from the Earth to the Sun.â
Â
âWowâŚâ
Â
ââThe Transit of Venus,â it is calledâ the woman sighed. âIt will be quite the spectacleâ
Â
âWell⌠it is beautifulâ Glinda says as she removes her eye from the lenses and looks up at the windows. She didnât noticed the woman staring at her
Â
âYes⌠I suppose it isâŚâ
Â
âWhy are you cooped up in this⌠observatory when the King is throwing a grand ball?â Glinda turns and asks
Â
âI prefer the company of knowledge than of peopleâ
Â
âWhy is that?â
Â
The woman stayed quiet as she gestured to her face. âThat is whyâ
Â
Glinda frowned âI do not see a problem with itâ
Â
âMy⌠vitiligo condition is viewed as unnatural to many. I do not want to make a spectacle of myselfâ
Â
âDo you not want to find a mate and marry?â
Â
âIâm not very good with people.â
Â
âThat doesnât answer my question, my ladyâ
Â
âI suppose⌠I do have to marry⌠and produce the heir my father desires but I hate how it isnât my choice. I am merely just a pawn to himâ
Â
Glinda sighed âI understand the feeling I suppose, some of these alphas are rather⌠undesirable. Oh, but the Prince!â Glinda swooned âhis scent is just the fairestâ
Â
âWhat of the others?â
Â
Glinda pouted âtheir scents are hideous! Oh the Princeâs was truly the only tolerable oneâ
Â
The woman gave her a teasing smile âis my scent hideous as well?â
Â
âOh heavens no! Your scent is absolutely divine â
Â
The womanâs cheeks had a sprinkle of red spread across it. âWhy, thank youâŚâ
Â
âYou are most welcome. You seem kindâ
Â
âKind is not a word I would use to describe myself. More like âaberrantâ or as my sister would use âblunderââ
Â
âYou jestâ Glinda scoffs as she shook her head
Â
âI do notâ the woman answered with a straight faceÂ
Â
âWell, those words are not in my vocabulary so I shall not acknowledge them in any wayâ Glinda hummed
Â
The woman cracked a small smile. âYou are one determined ladyâ
Â
âI am. Iâm hoping to claim the Prince but he surely has other omegas throwing themselves at him and heâll soon forget about me.â
Â
âYouâre incomparable, I doubt he will forgetâÂ
Â
Glinda felt her cheeks heat up as she looked up at the woman
Â
âMy apologies, I spoke out of turn-â
Â
âNo! No, it was kind of youâ Glinda blushed as she pushed a stray hair behind her ear âthank youâŚâ
Â
âOf course, my sweetâ
Â
âSweet?â
Â
âYour scent is a sweet one. And I do not know your nameâ
Â
âI do not know yours eitherâ
Â
âMy name is Elphaba⌠Thropp is my bastard surnameâ
Â
âElphaba Throppâ Glinda whispered as she tested the name on her tongue. âYour sister is the Miss Nessarose and your father is the Duke of Munchkinlandâ
Â
âHe is not my fatherâ
Â
âHe is not? I thought you said you were a bastard?â
Â
âI am but through my mother. Sheâs the real Duchess of Munchkinland, the Duke merely holds the title until Nessa marries, then the title will go to herâ
Â
âWait⌠arenât you the elder? Shouldnât the title go to you?â
Â
âIt supposed to, but I am a bastard so the Munchkin title will pass to my younger sister insteadâ
Â
âWow⌠I did not knowâ
Â
Elphaba shrugs her shoulders âmost people donâtâ
Â
âWell⌠Iâm Glinda Arduenna Upland of the upper Uplands, itâs a pleasure to meet you, Elphaba Throppâ Glinda smiled as she led out her hand to the woman
Â
Elphaba softly grasped her hand with her own and shook it. âIt was a pleasure, Miss Glindaâ
Â
Glinda felt a spark inside her chest. âCan I call you Elphie?â
Â
âUm, itâs a bit perky-â
Â
âI think it fits you perfectly. â
Â
Elphaba let out a soft laugh that turned Glindaâs insides into mush. âI will only allow you such an honorâ
Â
âItâs truly a privilege, is it?â Glinda chuckled. âWell, unfortunately I still have to tingle, and I suppose you donât have any idea where the nearest lavatory is?âÂ
Â
âI do actually, I can show you but we must make haste. We can not be seen alone togetherâ
Â
âWhy is that?â
Â
âWell, you are an unmarried woman, arenât you?â
Â
âYes?â
Â
âIt can ruin your virtue being seen with an alpha, alone â
Â
âBut it is just the two of us?â
Â
âMy lady, I am an alpha, and you are an unclaimed omega. How would that look?â
Â
âOh⌠I did not know you wereâŚâ Glinda blushed as she looked away from Elphaba
Â
Elphaba let out a soft chuckle. âIt is common for people to confuse me but I can assure you that I am in fact an alpha. Though I have been told that I do not seem like an alpha nor do I smell like one.â
Â
âCouldâve fooled meâ
Â
âHmm⌠about the lavatory, I can show you where it is and escort you back to the ball but then we must part ways. Itâll be in the best interest for both of usâ
Â
âYou are not going to attend the ball?â
Â
âLike I said before, I prefer the company of knowledge than of peopleâ
Â
âBut, here you are, indulging in my companyâ
Â
Elphaba stayed quiet for a bit before speaking again. âI suppose I am. You are quite good companyâ
Â
Glinda smiled as she leaned closer to Elphaba. âMy lady, are you saying that youâre enjoying my company instead of your stars in the sky?â
Â
The side of Elphabaâs lip curled upward as she raised an eyebrow âthe stars are trivial compared to your presence, my sweetâ
Â
Oh⌠The flutter in Glindaâs chest was nothing like she has ever felt before. âOh⌠my. You certainly have a way with words, Elphieâ
Â
âMy sweet, it appears that you are blushingâ Elphaba points out as Glindaâs cheeks flushed a bright red color.Â
Â
Glinda looks away and fans her face. âIt's just simply hot in here and I still have to use the lavatoryâŚâ Glinda says as she breaks whatever⌠this was
Â
âOh⌠rightâŚâ Elphaba blinks. âCome, Iâll show you the wayâ Elphaba says as she offers her hand out to Glinda
Â
Glindaâs bright blue eyes lingers on the hand in front of her
Â
âWell, are you coming?â
Â
Glinda nods and takes her hand before following Elphaba out of the observatory. Elphaba pulls her down the hallway and they make their way around the corner before walking up to a door.
Â
âHere, this is a lavatory you can use. Iâll wait for you out hereâ Elphaba says as she opens the door
Â
âThank you, youâre quite the gentlewoman,â Glinda said as she walked into the lavatory and closed the door.
Â
As soon as the door shut, Glinda firmly placed her back against the door as she gripped the front of her chest. Her heart was beating madly and her hand trembled. She had never felt like this before, never for anyone.
Â
This⌠peculiar woman has enamored her. Enchanted her in just a few fleeting moments with her deep hazel eyes and sharp mind. Glinda wondered if this is how the characters in story books felt when they had fallen for their love. Heaven knows that Glinda has never met anyone like her.Â
Â
She wasâŚ
Â
She was a bastard
Â
A social pariah, someone to be shunned out by the circumstances of her birth. Not to mention her peculiar condition. She wasnât perfect. Far from itÂ
Â
She wasnât someone like Prince Fiyero nor like Lord Tenmeadows. She had no titles to her name and she wasnât someone of importance.Â
Â
She would ruin her familyâs reputation if she chose to marry such a woman but her heart seemed to have a mind of its own. Unfortunately for her, she had to follow reason instead of what her heart desired. She couldnât help but mourn such a loss
Â
Glinda sighed as she pushed herself off the door and did her business. Once she was done, she washed her hands and looked into the looking glass. What she saw was a foolish girl whose heart had been taken by the wrong person. A heart that would be undoubtedly broken by the end of all of this
Â
Glinda walked out of the lavatory and found Elphaba leaning on the wall. She smiled and offered her hand again which Glinda happily took. âLetâs make haste back to the ball, shall we?â
Â
âOf courseâ Glinda said as the two started walking back to the ball, hand in hand.Â
***
Once they reached the doors, music and mingling conversation could be heard from the closed doors. Elphaba quickly pulled her hand back and looked away. âHere we are. Do enjoy the rest of the evening, Miss Glindaâ
Â
Glinda ached to reach back and grab her hand once more but instead, she stood still. âI hope you enjoy your stars tonight, Miss Elphaba.â
Â
Elphaba smiled as she looked back at Glinda once more. âI thought I had given you the privilege of calling me such a quirky nameâ
Â
âIâm hoping on being given another privilege before we part ways, Elphieâ Glinda said in a low voice as she stepped closer to Elphaba
Â
âAnd what would that be, Miss Glinda?â Elphaba questions as Glinda moved even closer to her
Â
âThisâŚâ Glinda whispered before placing a kiss on the alphaâs cheek. She lingered a bit as she inhaled the alluring scent before pulling back. âI do hope our paths cross again, Elphie. Until then, take careâ
Â
Elphaba blinked as she stayed quiet. Glinda gave her a small smile before she opened the door and walked through it.
Â
The ball was still ongoing with some drunk suitors stumbling onto the dance floor, mamas trying to matchmake their Omegaâs offspring to respectable suitors, and other Omegas fanning their faces as interested suitors flirted with them.
Â
Glinda quickly hasted back to where her friends were.
Â
âGlinda! There you are, I was almost ready to go and look for youâ ShenShen sighed in relief as Pfannee wiped sweat off his face. âSeriously girl, did you get lost?â
Â
Glinda blushed ây-yes. This place is like a maze I must confessâ
Â
âOh well. What you missed was that the Prince had asked Miss Sarima for a dance and Miss Milla had danced with that Munchkin Baron.â ShenShen recalledÂ
Â
âOh! And Miss Nessarose is throwing the next ball in the evening after tomorrowâs horse race. I heard that Prince Fiyero will be in attendance for both eventsâ Pfannee giggled
Â
âUnfortunately, her bastard sister will be in attendance for the horse race. Though Iâm not sure about the ball, sheâs not even hereâ
Â
âHer sister will be at the horse races?â Glinda perked up
Â
âYes, I just donât understand why we would have to affiliate ourselves to suchâŚâ Pfannee didnât finish as he scoffed
Â
Glinda frowned. âShe might not be all that badâ
Â
ShenShen laughed as she nudged her shoulder to Glinda. âGlinda, you truly have a good heartâ
***
The ball ended a few hours later and the Uplandâs family carriage rustled about as it made its way back to their Emerald home. It was smaller than their home back at the Upper Uplands, only 38 rooms but it would have to make due.Â
Â
Her father was nodding off as her mother kept asking her questions.
Â
âWhat was the Prince like?â Lady Upland grinned
Â
Glinda mustered a smile. âHe was everything I had hopedâ
Â
âWhat about Lord Tenmeadows?â
Â
Glindaâs smile fell. âOh momsie, he was⌠not what I wantâ
Â
âOh, well I shall let your father know not to accept any marriage proposal from himâ
Â
âThank you momsie, I canât believe he is one and thirty years of age, asking me, a girl of eight and ten years of age out to a dance. Does he not realize how old he is?âÂ
Â
Lady Upland laughed as she watched her daughter pout. âOh darling, I see that heâs still that proud man even after all these yearsâ
Â
âHis scent was even more dreadfulâ
Â
âWhat about the Princeâs scent?â
Â
âOh⌠it was nice. He was niceâ Glinda smiled but her smile didnât seem to reach her eyes
Â
âHave you spoken to any other suitors? Was there anyone else who has caught your eye?â
Â
Glinda stayed quiet as she thought back to Elphaba. âYes⌠but it can never beâ
Â
Lady Upland frowned as she looked at Glindaâs downcasted face. âWhy is that, darling?â
Â
Glinda sadly shrugs her shoulders as she turns to look out the carriageâs window. âIt just can notâŚâ
Â
Through the window, Glinda can see the countless stars shining through the dark night and thought of a pair of deep hazel eyes.
