I don't smoke

Summary:

Being dumped is no fun.

If that isn’t embarrassing enough, going to your ex’s football game like a sad, clingy ex is definitely no fun.

Notes:

Thank you for clicking on my story!

This was meant to be an angsty one-shot that I wanted to post on December 2024 to beat writer's block. It took a life of it's own and is sitting at 10,000 words with 5 partially written and outlined chapters. I am still not sure about the final number of chapters. I wonder if I was able to beat writer's block since I still find myself stuck. I contemplated if I should first have the entire thing written before posting chapters, but that never ends up working out for me. At least with it out, it feels real and not something I have infinite time to work on.

Rants about my unstable writing aside.

This was challenging due to a lack of backstory for Shidou. As of 27th April 2025, 300 chapters are out. Reonagi tragedy aside, there is no backstory in sight for Shidou which made me fill in the gaps and interpret quiet a bit. In case his backstory is revealed, I will update the tags to reflect that.

Have fun!

Chapter Text

This was dumb. <y/n> was dumped.

Why did she return to watch her ex’s game?

Rows upon rows of people blocked her view, not to mention the rogue elbows from the man sitting next to her, whenever he cheered, ate, or did anything. It was her fault for not checking the seat number properly and sitting blindly on the first seat she had come across.

No matter, she probably shouldn’t be here in the first place. Maybe she deserved a few elbows to the face to snap her back to reality. But, with every elbow to the face, all <y/n> did was blink and re-focus her eyes on the playing field, hoping to catch a particular face among the crowd.

Football wasn’t her thing. Sports overall wasn’t her thing. Watching sports was also not her thing. The crowds, the noise. It all tugged at her insides to leave.

What brought her here, and rooted her to the seat was tracking a specific player. Her heart was beating, and she was scared to find him. Her eyes were not fast enough to keep up with their game. She was slow, and sports was not where she belonged. <y/n> shrunk back in her seat, pulling the hood of her jacket down. She didn’t care a rat’s ass about belonging in football. There was only one place she wanted to belong, and the desperation made her shrivel in embarrassment.

<y/n> sat up, building up the resolve to leave for good. It was pathetic to come here.

Not like he was going to notice her.

His focus would be on the game, not her. Never her.

Another elbow came flying at her, this time hitting her nose. Pain made her fly out of her seat, and she let it jolt her to reality.

Shidou broke up with <y/n>.

Tears brimmed in her eyes, her cue to leave. She weaved between the seats and people in a daze. If they were spooked by a shady person weaving through the crowd, she didn’t notice. For the hundredth time, she felt like bursting into ugly sobs, frustrated at how far away the exit felt. A part of her didn’t want to reach the exit, stuck in an endless time loop, keeping her tied to the stadium.

Leaving meant more than just leaving the match and she couldn’t tolerate that outcome, even after all the months that had passed.

“Excuse me?” <y/n> managed to attract bad luck. She tensed and shuffled to a stop. Her stomach dropped, even though she had a legitimate ticket and hadn’t done anything wrong.

Except be a clingy ex who couldn’t seem to move on.

The man wore a staff uniform, eyes narrowed in worry. His good intentions aggravated her.

“Are you lost?”

It took immense effort not to snap at the blameless man. Yeah, she was a bit lost. Being dumped was more or less okay to accept. There being no reason for said dumping, made her feel more than just lost.

Instead, she handed him her ticket. The ticket was mailed directly to her with zero context. No note, only her name on the envelope. <y/n> didn’t know who would play a sick joke like this. The ticket was too good a copy, too elaborate for a prank. Blue Lock was insanely funded and many people were pulled aside by security for trying to get in with fakes.

Blue Lock vs U20 tickets were sought after, and people at their high school scoffed at how fast tickets sold out, adding that it was a waste of time and energy to go see the largest asshole in the world play. The crowd was large, but unsurprisingly, no one from her high school, especially the football team, was there to watch.

Well, <y/n> didn’t count as someone from high school.

The man looked over her ticket, eyes widening. “Miss, this is a vip ticket. You’re in the wrong section.”

Surprise punched the air out of her. How hadn’t she noticed? <y/n> took the ticket back, seeing that it had ‘VIP’ written on it, in large, bold letters. The lack of a letter to accompany the ticket was still a mystery.

“I’ll take you there. Follow me.”

She grew skeptical on the way to the VIP section and then became utterly overcome by disbelief once the man stopped in the family and friends section. A toxic dump of muddled emotions raged inside her, making her lightheaded.

“We’re here. Grab a seat and enjoy the rest of the game!”

This section was up close and personal, to the point where <y/n> could see the faces of all the players, in detail. She remained standing, seeing that Shidou wasn’t playing during the first half. Of course, he must have done something to rile his teammates up. She slumped in a seat located further back. With all this, time flew, <y/n> in a daze. They hadn’t mentioned his name once during the announcement, so the ticket might have accidentally been sent to her.

There was no other explanation.

If that was the case, <y/n> was a big fat loser.

The family members cheered, calling out to the players and embarrassing them. Their smiles and cheers sucked the life out of her. This section had a visible path to an exit and she snuck outside for a smoke. Soon, half-time was called, the announcers filling up the time with chatter booming throughout the stadium.

“Blue Lock is giving tough competition! At this stage, Japan U20 might bring out their hidden weapon - Shidou Ryuusei!”

The name made her want to explode in a flood of tears. To him, she was an ex who couldn’t move on. She flicked her lighter, inhaling deeply.

What was he to her?
