Chapter Text
If you asked Megumi if his day started off normal. He would say yes. Megumi would think so at least. Though maybe, most likely really, Megumi would be the only person to call his life normal, since slaying curses daily by using a cursed technique along with his classmate's also using cursed techniques, was not normal. Now that he thinks about it, his life is probably just very normalized to him. From anyone else's perspective his life was anything but normal, he didn't seem to think so.
He went about it normally though, waking up at the early hour of six o'clock, getting dressed, not to long after, into a casual sweater and pants. Lounging at his desks chair, trying to get study done then deciding he couldn't and made his why down to the kitchen to fix himself a snack. Thinking he might be slightly more productive with a full stomach.
Along the way he bumped into his peers, friends really but Megumi rarely over said this, throwing a casual “Hello, how are you” over his shoulder as he continued down the hall.
Thankfully the conversation where kept small and he made it to the kitchen quickly, and after he made his toast with butter, he walked outside to enjoy it in peace.
Now if you factored in that it was Valentine’s Day and asked him again, Megumi's demeanour would falter slightly as this would also mean factoring in his unrequited crush on a certain pink haired, yellow jumper wearing, goofily smiling idiot of boy. Who Megumi seemed to have a crush on regardless.
Which is how Megumi’s day had gone so far, which wasn't that normal, even for him, considering he was now having a slight crisis on a random bench in the campus.
It wasn't his finest moment, and Megumi was aware of this. His spikey hair, although usually messy, had turned frizzy and tangled from the copious number of times he'd run his slender fingers through them. The toast he'd prepared for himself, mere minutes ago, now lay discarded and half balanced on the bench.
Megumi threw his head back, letting out a cry stifled by his hands covering his mouth. He moves them to his hairline pushing it back slightly before running them down his face, letting them fall into his lap after.
Granted a teenager tweaking out on a bench is bizarre and sure to catch stray looks of concern but when it's happy couples with pitiful looks at him, Megumi can’t help but sigh out of annoyance. Megumi makes a face, noticing a couple holding hands in his peripheral vision, he understands it's Valentine’s Day and all but really? Go hold hands in private, stop reminding him of how single he is.
Maybe he was being too harsh on them but was it really his fault? Megumi's not sure what's worse, spiting couples because he's single or being jealous of them on Valentine’s Day. He picks the easy way out and blames his crush for his actions. This sends his brain down a whole other rabbit whole.
Was he really acting this why because of a crush? Of all the things that have happened in his life he's acting so out of character like this...because of a crush?
" But Yujis not just a crush, he is your first one EVER." His mind 'helpfully' points this painful detail out to him and Megumi did not need that reminder. Thoughts of him pathetically pining over a one-sided crush at his age was bad enough but realising this was his first crush was a slap to his probably blushing face. Was this his mind calling him overdramatic, for having his first crush at fifteen and acting this way about it.
Out of everything on this planet, Megumi's mind should know he had every right to be this dramatic. His mind knows how much Yuji occupies it, in a way it's his minds fault for him acting this way. Stupid mind, not letting him have thoughts other than Yuji. Thoughts other than Yuji and his infectious smile, how it beams and stretches from ear to ear, how it's already a full smile but still somehow manages to widen even more. Oh God his infectious smile, Megumi was sure now that he was blushing from the sheer heat radiating from his cheeks.
Not only did his mind think of Yuji and his toothy grin constantly, the image of him in general played repeatedly on his mind. Yuji would simply be training, eating, and talking, just existing really and Megumi's face would be dusted with pink blush when he thought of it. And he thought of that a lot, stupid mind.
However often Yuji plays in his mind, Megumi was never going to tell him. No, he'd save himself the embarrassment of rejection and keep the relationship as is, best friends. Yuji likes girls it was obvious, tall girls with big buts like Jenner Lawrence... Megumi was neither of the three, obviously. Unfortunately, so too, because being with Yuji, being able to say he's dating him would make Megumi’s insides melt away and his face twist into a smile of happiness.
Apparently, the thought of dating Yuji wasn't only a blush inducing one but a rather distracting one too. As he happily imagined what a life with Yuji was like, Yuji himself crept behind a bush, sling shot in hand ready to fire. Megumi, however, was oblivious to all this until he peered down to look at his hands, surprised to see a small chocolate heart and attached to it...a note.
It lay in the scrunches of his pants like it had fallen from above. Maybe it had, that was the likely explanation, and the one Megumi had decided upon. Had it been thrown at him, at his head in particular, Megumi was now realising there was a small throbbing in his head as if he'd been hit.
Yuji had a plan, a mission really, but a plan just the same. Infact, he had the perfect plan, the best one he'd ever planned in his life, ever. And he's had plenty of great plans in his life before. Like the plan he had to prank Gojo, Maki and Nobara, Yuta even...everyone really. But this plan was different he was taking this plan seriously like it was a matter of life and death. (Which for Yuji, ironically, it was but he preferred not to dwell on that.) So seriously he'd even trusted Nobara to help him and she reluctantly agreed, though it became easier to convince her once a crush was mentioned.
Yuji sits on his bed looking anywhere but Nobara. After realising how embarrassing it is telling her all this, he is quite intent on memorising every detail of his dorm roof. His eyes gaze over the roof, the same colour of white staying consistent all the way. “Wow, was My roof always this white?”
"It's kinda a pretty white like clouds, oooo clouds now I wanna touch clouds they would feel so delicate... can you even touch clouds? Oh well only one way to find out!" What started as avoiding Nobara quickly turned into a ramble in Yujis mind, which could've continued one but soon after it started Nobara spoke breaking the comfortable silence.
" Wait, wait, wait, wait" Nobara was saying but Yuji’s mind was still elsewhere.
" You, as in you Yuji Itadori, has a crush , as in like like that, on him, as in Megumi Fushiguro. " Nobara all but squeeled this in excitement, " Do you know how long I've been waiting to hear this?"
Yuji doesn't respond, he just sits there idly twiddling his thumbs in his lap. He doesn't have to say anything to keep the conversation going though as Nobara continues on speaking anyways.
" Since I first met your pining butt, duh." She answers herself, why bother asking embarrassing questions if you're just going to answer it yourself, Yuji thinks.
"Oh okay... makes sense?" Yuji questions out-loud his voice turning squeaky and before he can stop himself more embarrassing words spill from his lips.
" Is it really that obvious?" Yuji winces in preparation like he knows Nobara is going to rip into him with her response.
Was his pining that obvious, if Nobara could notice who else might have? Oh gosh had Fushiguro noticed and if he had then what? Would he be mad, disgusted even? Boys weren't meant to like boys. And although he'd never been explicitly told this Yuji knew, it was evident in books and movies were boys and girls always got together. Even if there were romantic feelings between two boys it was discarded for different gender romance.
Should Yuji discard his feelings?
What nonsense, discarding his feelings for Megumi would mean discarding the fluttering in his stomach, the pink dusting of his cheeks and the giddy smile he has whenever he is near him. The only way to discard his feeling would be avoiding them, and Megumi too. Avoid Megumi? What nonsense Yuji thinks not when he’s my entire world.
"You blush when he looks your way, you stumble over your words when he's around and your biggest tell, that stupid rubbing of your nape that you do" She finishes with a triumphant smile before adding " So yeah I think it's obvious."
" We need a plan, to get you guys together but mostly to save me from your weird pining." She giggles before firing of ideas on how he should confess.
They go back and forth for what seems like ages, and after they rule out Yuji just confessing, because apparently Yuji wasn't a man enough to do it according to Nobara.
Until Yuji has the bright idea to send love notes.
" Love notes?" Nobara makes a face as if disgusted by his idea.
" Yeah, love notes doesn't that sound so cute, the perfect way for me to confess!" Yuji’s now grinning like an idiot, apparently forcing Nobara to throw a pillow at him which he easily dodges.
" Ooo, I like this! This way he doesn't know it's me " he starts looking over at Nobara, her face scrunched in questioning, he cuts her of before she can interject " but I make it more obvious it was me until he figures out it's me."
" What if he figures out its you but doesn't like that” she asks before adding “which I find hard to believe." She finishes with a snicker, leaving Yuji wondering what that could mean.
" Hmmm, if I start to see signs, he doesn't reciprocate then I'll make the notes sound like they were from someone else, not me." Yuji nods proudly to himself, chuffed at his plan.
Now it's time to execute it so he says his thanks and goodbyes to Nobara, who already had plans with Maki, and sets off to find Megumi.
Sometime later, Yuji is perched behind a bush gaze focused whole heartedly on Megumi. Megumi who was looking rather distraught what was that all about? Yuji knows he shouldn’t, but he can't help but smile to himself, Megumi looking distraught on Valentine’s Day. Now Yuji mighten be the brightest but he could put two and two together. Megumi was single!
Yuji was always under the impression he was, but he never knew for sure. This confirmed his suspicion, and Yuji entered a state of euphoria, Megumi is single! And Yuji wanted to scream this from the roof tops, but then other people would know he's single, and with the dashing looks and pretty green eyes Megumi had, yuji was scared that if other people knew they'd tried to steal him away. So yuji celebrated quietly to himself pumping a fist into the air.
Once he calmed, Yuji got back to the matter at hand. His plan to confess to Megumi. He pulls out a small bit of paper, a heart chocolate wrapped in red, and his sling shot.
Oh. Wait. What should he write on it? This had never occurred to Yuji he still had to write something, but what? Panicking slightly, Yuji looks around frantically until his gaze lands on Megumi and as soon as Megumi enters his vision he calms, instantly.
No, Megumi doesn't simply enter his vision, he becomes Yujis vision, the only thing he can focus on, the only thing he understands, the only thing his eyes compute to his brain is how breathtaking Megumi is. The golden hue of the sun’s rays, glow down onto his face, gracing Yuji with the sight of hard angles of his face, illuminating softly. The slight dusting of coral pink spreading over his cheeks, and Yujis at a loss for words but his mind is like a broken record repeating " Megumi you're so pretty" over and over.
Now Yuji is a walking contradiction because Yuji himself is lost for words but his minds working in overdrive still repeating those same four words.
Then Megumi blinks slowly, and a simple action shouldn't have this effect on Yuji but now even his mind doesn't know what to say, that is until the golden hues are replaced by a hazy shadow giving Megumi’s face a soft look and now the only thing Yuji can think to say is " Everything I've envisioned as beautiful and pure in this world has been embodied in you."
Megumi continued to stare, dumbfounded, at the items still laying in his lap, he eyed them, thinking what was best to do next. He knew this was going to be some sort of love note, but he only wanted a love note from one person. It would be rude to open this knowing there would never be the chance he would reciprocate their feelings. On the other hand, completely ignoring it would be ruder.
Oh, what the hell, he thought picking up the chocolate.
He slowly turned the chocolate over in his palm before setting it down to pick up the note. The note looked small in his fingers, carefully tied up in a green bow, the same green as his eyes, which is weird. He started undoing the bow allowing the paper to flutter down into his lap.
Megumi’s fingers were shaking slightly as he picked it up, they seemed to get worse as he read what was written on the paper.
" Everything I've envisioned as beautiful and pure in this world has been embodied in you."
Megumi was confused to say the least. His eyes moved over each word taking them in but still not understanding any of them.
Beautiful? Megumi wasn't beautiful, it was the one fact in his life he knew would always be correct, not only were boys not meant to be beautiful, but Megumi just had too many scars, physical and emotional, to be considered beautiful. How could someone think he was beautiful if he wasn't even beautiful on the inside he thought.
His fingers twitch around the paper, slightly annoyed, he tucks it into his pocket muttering to himself.
“Beautiful… boys are handsome, not beautiful” Sure Megumi didn’t think he was handsome either but that was beside the point.
Apparently, the mystery person thought otherwise, which took Megumi by surprise as he peers back down to his lap to see another note.
At first Megumi looked away, it was bad enough he read the first one he didn’t want to give false hope by reading another. However, curiosity over came him as he peers down yet again.
The note lays smally in his lap, the words staring back at him and as he reads them the faint of a small ghosts his lips.
“Well yeah, your handsome too. Mostly beautiful though” And those word follow him, staying at the front of his mind as he continues with his day. The blush it gave to Megumi’s cheeks didn’t fully disappear either.
