Work Text:
Sugawara took a deep breath, immersing himself for what could be the last time he sets foot in the gym.
He inhaled the heavy scent of salonpas and rubber permeating the gym, smiling as fond memories bubbled up in his mind. He remembered the first time he set for Asahi who was more anxious than a child left on his own, the first legitimate scolding he got from Daichi and their other upperclassmen who were all captains in their own right, Shimizu introducing herself as the manager to the team for the first time and not batting an eye at everyone’s reactions, and lastly, all the shy looks his juniors wore when he first met them.
He took note of how the bright lights reflected against the newly waxed floor, and how much smaller the gym looked now compared to when he first set foot in it. He recalled the way the lights used to flicker in his first year on the team, scaring Asahi witless whenever they were the ones to close the gym, the way his shoes squeaked against the floor, losing his breath as he ran around the gym when old Coach Ukai had come back, and the way the team’s voices echoed as they poked fun at each other during practice matches and breaks.
He had just retired from competitive volleyball, yet he was already feeling nostalgic.
Today, he, Daichi, Asahi and Shimizu had decided to visit and check on the team. It was exhilarating watching the second-years, and first-years practice. Ennoshita had done quite well in taking over the reins from Daichi, especially in handling Tanaka, Nishinoya, Kageyama and Hinata. Though, the 2nd years were still keen on messing with him.
“Yo, Chikar- I mean captain! Any chance you’ll treat us to meat buns later?” Nishinoya bounced up and down in front of Ennoshita.
“Yeah! The captain always treats the team after a good practice.” Tanaka added, grinning devilishly. “Would do you good to start as early as now, Chikara.”
“You two!” Ennoshita pinched the bridge of his nose. Suga felt sorry for him but he was already amused at how the dynamic of the team was changing. He could not help but let out a chuckle with the rest of the third years. It was a bit a funny to see everyone turn their heads to Ennoshita upon hearing the word ‘meat.’ Everyone had their eyes on Ennoshita, expecting, hoping. “Fine! But only if you all behave.”
“YES!” Several shouts came from the team, the loudest coming from Nishinoya and Hinata.
“Alright, alright. Back to practice!” Ennoshita clapped his hands.
“Yes, captain!” An embarrassed blush crept up Ennoshita’s cheeks, still unused to the title.
The first years seemed to have found their groove within the team. They were no longer as awkward with their upperclassmen. Yamaguchi had apparently hit it off with Narita. Still, it was no surprise since they were playing the same position.
Suga watched as Yamaguchi practiced his blocking with Narita.
“Yamaguchi, I know it’s not much but maybe you can try concentrating your strength up to your fingers more.” Narita explained. “And…this is not much coming from someone like me but don’t be scared of following your instincts.”
“Narita-san is right.” Tsukishima said smoothly before taking a gulp of water. “Blockers need to have more confidence. You need that to be able to read their play and stop it.”
Over time, Tsukishima had started opening up a bit more bit by bit, but still relished in making offhanded comments to rile everyone up. He has started to become a bit nicer, if only a little bit.
“Tsukki!” Yamaguchi lit up from Tsukishima’s advice. Narita watched them amusedly.
“Tsukishima’s right.” Kinnoshita came up beside Narita. “Good blockers are really hard to deal with. It’s always scary.”
“Kinnoshita-san, thank you!” Yamaguchi bowed deeply, his smile broad.
“Yeah, Yamaguchi you just need to stand up in front of them and BWAH!” Hinata jumped in. Yamaguchi could only look at him in confusion, clearly not getting what the hell ‘BWAH’ meant. “You’ll get them!”
“Talk in actual words, idiot.” Kageyama scrunched the top of Hinata’s head. To which Hinata adamantly tried to pry Kageyama’s hand off him. “No one speaks the same language as you.”
“Pfft, you’re just the same, Kageyama!” Hinata shot back, pointing an accusing finger at him. “Sometimes, I still don’t understand what you say! You just go ‘hrmph’ or you don’t even talk at all.”
“What was that!?” Kageyama scowled. “You should already know by now, idiot!”
It was nice to see how Kageyama and Hinata have gotten along even better. It would not be a lie to consider them as friends at this point, any animosity between them that existed at the start of the school year had already faded away into a friendly rivalry.
“Maybe we should all calm down.” Yachi came to try and disperse the tension, handing out water to the team. She strode with a bit more confidence nowadays.
“It seems like the freak duo has freak languages too. No wonder they suck at studying.” Tsukishima said offhandedly. Kageyama and Hinata immediately glared at him, quickly forgetting their earlier squabble.
At Tsukishima’s comment, the third years let out their laughter, alerting everyone with their presence.
“Daichi-san, Suga-san, Asahi-san!” Tanaka exclaimed, before looking to Shimizu who was waving shyly at everyone. “Kiyoko-san!!!” Tanaka and Nishinoya gushed in unison, waving animatedly at Shimizu.
Everyone started clamoring once they noticed them. With a whistle to announce his presence, Coach Ukai had wrangled the team up to get them back to practicing.
“While I’m sure all of you are happy that we have some very important observers today,” Coach Ukai shot the third years a smile. “You have to remember we only have some time before the next tournament. Take this chance to show off to your seniors how much you’ve grown!”
“Yes!” A resounding agreement came from the whole team. Immediately, everyone went back to their routine, a keen determination visible in their eyes.
Suga can hardly believe he played with such talented and passionate people. It all felt like a fever dream just a week ago. Even now, he felt like he was dreaming. He felt as if he was still stuck at that practice match they held at the beginning of the year.
It was January now, a measly few months before graduation.
He was running out of time yet he wanted to relish these last few chances to watch his team.
It was difficult.
He knew he hardly had anything left to offer the team.
Yet he can’t stop himself from taking notice of the small mistakes his juniors did.
Just a tiny adjustment to their posture, a bit of movement for their spacing…there was an itch in Suga that wanted to help them still.
But he also knew that his juniors were well on their way to noticing these slight imperfections and polishing them before the new season.
And from this moment on, he would only continue to see them grow from the foundation he, Daichi and Asahi had built.
Looking to his side, he saw the pride written all over his friends’ faces.
Suga let out a fond sigh, watching the practice match continue as he and his fellow seniors teased and gave out advice to his juniors.
He was going to miss this.
“So, any plans aside from studying for the entrance exams?” Daichi asked as they walked their usual path home. The chilly winter breeze blew past them as they trudged on the snow-covered path, making Suga shudder from the cold. Suga watched as Daichi wound his dark scarf even more around his neck, and as Asahi buried half of his face into his checkered muffler. At least it wasn’t just him who was getting cold.
‘I should buy more hot packs before I get home.’ Suga noted in his head. His blue scarf has definitely seen better days as well. Maybe it was time to get a new one.
“I’m still on the fence on going to Tokyo.” Asahi said, scratching his cheek. His low voice broke Suga out of his thoughts. “So, I’m still checking out some other universities.”
Suga noted the way Asahi seemed to curl into himself as he spoke, noting this as a habit of his when he gets very, very anxious.
“Come on, Asahi! I’m sure Tokyo won’t be as scary as you think.” Suga chided his friend, trying to lighten things up. “Besides, we made friends in Tokyo, right?” Suga nudged Asahi’s side, reminding him of their Tokyo rivals.
“You do have a point. I guess I’ll try easing myself into the idea more.” Asahi gave Suga a smile as he rubbed the back of neck. “Still nervous about it though.”
“No point worrying about things that haven’t happened yet.” Suga reminded him to which Asahi hung his head in defeat. “There’s no harm in taking risks, Asahi! Don’t tell me our ace’s confidence disappeared the moment he retired?”
“H-hey! I’m still an ace!” Asahi retorted, a bit flustered at Suga’s teasing. “I just…well, I guess having an ace’s mentality is situational?”
“Then, this is the perfect situation for it!” Daichi answered Asahi simply, letting out a laugh. “An ace is not afraid of anything that stands before him because he can just plow through it. You did it with Date Tech, you can do it in choosing your future.”
“That’s awfully sage-like of you, Daichi. Can’t believe being a captain has advanced your aging.” Suga poked fun at Daichi. “You almost sounded like an old man there.”
“That was legitimate advice though.” Daichi said, the pink tinge on his cheeks betraying his slight embarrassment. On the other hand, Asahi had tears in the corners of his eyes from hearing Daichi’s words.
“Alright, alright, I’ll let up on the teasing.” Suga patted his friends’ shoulders. “You two are doing well after all.”
Daichi and Asahi couldn’t help but smile.
“What about you, Suga?” Daichi asked, curious. “Asahi and I are almost pretty much set.”
“Hmm, still not sure about it.” Suga mused. He hasn’t thought much on his career path aside from making sure he studies enough to pass the college entrance exams. “It’ll take some time for me to find what I really want to do.”
“Well, you could try taking a part time job?” Asahi said, scratching his cheek, sheepishly. “I’ve never taken a part time job before so I’m not really sure it would help.”
“That’s a great idea! Maybe it’ll start up something in me.” Suga smiled. “Hmmm, I’ll have to start looking for one though. Now that I think about it, I’m a bit jealous of you guys. You already have plans. Can’t believe I’ll be friends with a cop and a fashion designer.”
“W-we’re still not sure if I’ll actually be a fashion designer yet though, Suga.” Asahi stuttered. “But I guess you can count on Daichi to actually become part of the police.”
“You’d bail me out right, Daichi?” Suga grinned, elbowing his friend’s side.
“It depends.” Daichi chuckled. “Can’t have you disturbing the peace more than you already do.”
“Hey, I haven’t done anything stupid!” Suga replied.
“You enable people to do stupid things though.” Daichi pointed out. “You were the first to compliment Hinata when he snuck in to the 1st year training camp.”
“I’m with Daichi on this one.” Asahi quipped. “…You were the first to suggest I dress up as Jesus Christ for the Christmas party too.”
“And you almost got us in trouble in our match with Shiratorizawa…” Daichi placed his hand on his chin thoughtfully.
“Hey, my shouting still woke you guys up right?” Suga couldn’t help but laugh at the memories that bubbled up. “So, it shouldn’t count.”
“Still, I’m not sure our juniors know how much trouble you can create.” Daichi let out a laugh.
“Agreed.” Asahi shuddered. “I bet they all think you’re just a nice senpai. Little do they know you’re just leading them to do the stupidest things. You’re just hiding trouble under that smile.”
“I still tell them off when they cross the line though!” Suga defended himself. “I think I still did good as a vice captain. I may not be scary as Daichi but I have my ways.”
“Questionable ways and goals by the way.” Daichi added. “Though, Asahi as Jesus Christ is something that I won’t complain about.”
“Right?” Suga grinned. “I told you guys from the moment I saw him; it would become tradition.”
“You guys!” Asahi whined, clearly flustered.
The three of them laughed as they reminisced, slowly starting to miss that special camaraderie they had with the team.
Suga let out a fond sigh. He was glad he came to Karasuno. He was grateful to all the people he met through volleyball. He was happy that even though things hadn’t gone the way he expected, the surprises he met were nothing short of remarkable.
“Asahi, you know this is the perfect time to say it.” Suga looked to Asahi who froze as he walked.
“But you guys kept complaining whenever I get sentimental.” Asahi was bewildered.
“I can tell it’s been weighing on your mind, Asahi.” Daichi pointed out. “Just say it.”
“Your timing was off that’s all.” Suga placated him. “Now is the perfect time to say it.”
Suga and Daichi turned to Asahi with encouraging smiles. Asahi could not help but feel relieved to have such great friends.
“We’ve had a great final year with the team, don’t you guys think?” Asahi spoke with conviction.
“Yeah.” Daichi agreed. “We got to witness Karasuno reach a high point again.”
“And we were a part of it.” Suga added quietly. “All of us were.”
“Yes.” Daichi and Asahi turned to Suga. “We all helped make it happen.”
“It’s hard to believe still.” Suga said as he looked up the sky. “But you know what? I believed that we could do it even when it was hard. Our team is strong after all!”
“Right!” Asahi and Daichi grinned back at Suga.
“Anyway, I think that’s enough sentimentality for today. Time to focus on the now and the future.” Suga said much to Asahi’s dismay. Suga and Daichi just gave a teasing smile to a sheepish Asahi. “So, it’s part-time job hunting for me for now while you guys focus on getting into the police academy and learning more about fashion.”
“I’m sure some places are more than willing to take in a part-timer.” Daichi said. “Maybe you can work at Coach Ukai’s.”
“Haha, very funny Daichi.” Suga side eyed him. Daichi just gave him a sheepish look. “No way I’m working at his place. Pretty sure he’ll turn me away and tell me to focus on studying or ask Takeda-sensei.”
“That’s true…” Asahi pondered. “I guess you can try walking around town to see if anything catches your eye.”
“Not a bad idea, Asahi.” Suga tucked the idea into the back of his mind. Maybe he’ll search around town on the weekends when he’s not studying. “I’ll tell you guys if I find one.”
“I’m sure you will,” Daichi clapped him on the back. “Good luck!”
“Thanks guys.”
The week flew by fast, before Suga knew it, it was already the weekend. He had cram school on the weekends but classes start at night. So, he had the whole day ahead of him to search for a part time job. He wished he could ask Daichi, Asahi or even Shimizu to help him scour around but he’d rather not disturb them when they already have a lot on their plates. So, it looks like he has to tough this one alone. Not like this was a daunting task, but a little company makes everything just a little bit more fun.
He started his day walking through the commercial district, checking each business if they have an opening for a part-timer. However, not a lot of them really piqued his fancy, and not a lot were keen on accommodating a part-timer.
Suga ruffled his hair, slightly disappointed at the prospects he'd come out the day with. It was already midafternoon, and he had already combed through the whole commercial district only to come out with a few flyers, none of which were really beckoning him to work. He heaved a sigh before pocketing the flyers, and starting his way back home.
He tried to think positively as he walked home, even idly taking note of some businesses that he didn’t try checking earlier. Before he could reach the bus stop, a faint whistle caught his attention. He turned around, looking for the source of that very familiar sound. As he followed the sound and the chatter that came after it, he saw kids tittering about, animatedly talking to each other as they checked their things.
Curiosity guided his feet before he could even think. Before he knew it, he was standing in front of the local community center.
As Suga watched the kids file out of the community center, he looked at the colorful sign at the entrance.
‘Lil Tykes’ Volleyball. Volunteers welcome!’ The sign immediately caught his eye. Well, the words ‘Volleyball’ and ‘Volunteers’ definitely stood out. With excited steps, Suga immediately went inside the community center, dodging the kids who scrambled excitedly out of the facility.
He remembered he was the same way the first time he was introduced to volleyball all those years ago. He couldn’t stop the smile growing on his lips as he watched the kids passed the ball to one another as they passed him, trying to familiarize themselves with the ball.
It was always a treat to watch others get into the sport. He felt the same way when he had first taught Hinata to receive properly. Watching people fall in love with volleyball more and watching them enjoy the little improvements they’ve made always made him feel warm inside.
Distracted by the kids running out of the facility, Suga forgot to watch where he was going and accidentally bumped into something firm.
“Ah, sorry. I wasn’t paying attention….” Suga’s eyes widened comically. Before him stood the Great King himself, Karasuno’s (or at least Kageyama’s) nemesis, Oikawa Tooru.
Oikawa Tooru stood tall before him, carrying with him an unwavering air of confidence and pride. He looked down on him with a smirk, amused at seeing Suga once again after months of no contact. Oikawa Tooru looked the same as he did the last time Suga saw him, tall and imposing, a smirk to match his pride, and a cocky and amused glimmer in his eyes as he eyed down Suga like the rivals they were.
“Oh?” Oikawa leaned down to Suga’s eye level. “If it isn’t Mr. Refreshing.”
“Mr. Refreshing?” Suga let out a laugh, equally amused and surprised by the nickname. “What a lame nickname.”
Oikawa’s cheeks flared red at Suga’s comment.
“Or could it be…you don’t know my name?” Suga raised his brow at Oikawa, not the least intimidated by him.
“Don’t underestimate me, Sugawara Koushi-chan.” Oikawa crossed his arms across his chest, refusing to let himself be flustered.
“Oh, so you do know.” Suga grinned at Oikawa, already enjoying the way Oikawa reacted when the right buttons were pressed. “I thought you weren’t the type to remember benchwarmers.”
At Suga’s words, Oikawa flushed in embarrassment, caught red handed.
“Pfft, Tobio-chan may be the most annoying on your team, but you were definitely annoying as well.” Oikawa pushed his hands into his jacket’s pockets as he looked away, trying to maintain his cool. “Besides, isn’t it normal to keep tabs on all the annoying players on the other team?”
“The Great Oikawa Tooru finds me annoying, huh? So, how exactly was I annoying?” Suga asked, grinning as he watched Oikawa grind his teeth to avoid giving him any form of compliment. (Obviously, because any compliment to him would mean a compliment to Kageyama). “I mean if you said I was annoying, there must be something memorable about me.”
“….your targeted serves,” Oikawa said plainly as he turned his gaze away from Suga, trying to not to flatter or praise Suga in any form or manner. “And that setter switch gimmick you had with Tobio-chan.”
“I’m glad the Great King himself remembers those few moments I had on court.” Suga laughed. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t flattered by Oikawa’s words.
“Whatever helps you sleep at night.” Oikawa stung his tongue out. “Anyway, what brings you here, Mr. Refreshing?”
“I saw that the community center accepts volunteers for teaching volleyball to kids. I was hoping to try it out.”
“What? Learning volleyball?” Oikawa quipped with a smirk.
“Very funny Mr. I-never-went-to-nationals.” Suga shot back to Oikawa’s surprise.
“Hey, that was below the belt!” Oikawa whined, pointing an accusatory finger at Suga. Suga only laughed at his antics. Who knew the Great King could be this childish?
“Just stating facts, Oikawa-san.” Suga stuck his tongue out at him to which he got a glare.
“Fine, fine, you win this one, Mr. Refreshing.” Oikawa crossed his arms behind his head, pretending to be unaffected. “But this isn’t over yet. Anyway, you’re signing up to teach the kids?”
“Yeah, I plan to.” Suga answered him in a friendly manner. “As soon as I saw the sign, I knew I had to try it out.”
“Isn’t teaching kids volleyball a little safe? Though I guess that’s just how you are Mr. Refreshing.” Oikawa commented absently.
“Hah, clearly you haven’t dealt with kids as much.” Suga chuckled.
“Excuse you, I’ve been working here ever since Spring Interhigh ended.” Oikawa said proudly. “I know how to deal with children.”
“Tooru, Mom said liars are bad.” A small voice interrupted them. Both Suga and Oikawa looked down to find a kid with a shaved head and squinty eyes. Suga could not help but feel like the kid was familiar.
“Takeru, shouldn’t you be on my side!?” Oikawa whined as he looked at the kid. “I come to teach you and your friends volleyball and this is what I get?”
“You only came here because Mom asked you to, and you bragged to grandma that you were the greatest uncle in the world and that’s why you teach me and my friends here.” Takeru said bluntly.
“And I’m still your greatest uncle, Takeru!” Oikawa cried.
“My only uncle.” Takeru spoke monotonously.
Suga snickered at the exchange much to Oikawa’s chagrin.
“The Great King out bantered by a kid.” Suga couldn’t stop chuckling at Oikawa’s expense. Oikawa looked at Suga with a defeated look. “Now this I gotta tell the rest of the team.”
“Hey, hey! Things off court are off limits!” Oikawa cried, cornered by his own nephew and rival.
“Alright, alright. I won’t tell a soul.” Suga relented even though he enjoyed seeing this side of Oikawa. He can’t deny that he really wanted to tell the rest of the team about this, especially considering Hinata and Kageyama’s reactions to anything involving Oikawa. But a promise is a promise. “Anyway, since you work here, mind if you lead me to the person in charge so I can sign up?”
“Hm, so my presence isn’t enough to scare you away from this gig?” Oikawa crossed his arms.
“After seeing you and Takeru talk earlier, nothing about you phases me.” Suga replied to which Oikawa balked.
“Fine, I’ll introduce you to Coach Takakura. I’m sure he’d like a few more hands on the deck.” Oikawa placed a hand on his hip before turning his back to Suga, trying to look as dismissive as possible. He turned to Takeru before gesturing Suga to follow him. “Takeru, can you wait for a while?”
“Alright, Tooru.” Takeru nodded as he went to wait at a bench. For such a blunt child, Takeru seemed to be quite the good kid. Suga could not help but wonder if Oikawa had anything to contribute to it. Shifting his focus back on Oikawa, Suga bowed in thanks.
“Thanks, Oikawa.” Suga said. “For the help, I mean, it means a lot.”
“Huh? I’m just introducing you to Coach Takakura. It’s still up to him if he’ll let you on board.” Oikawa said a matter-of-factly. “Besides, I wouldn’t mind working with you anyway. It’s not like we’re playing against each other.”
“How mature of you.” Suga jested. Oikawa blew a puff of air at Suga’s words.
“I’m taking that as a compliment.” Oikawa relented, unable to think of a retort. Suga took that as a win.
As they walked towards the community center office, to Suga’s surprise, Oikawa started some idle chatter, seemingly unable to cope with the awkwardness between them.
“So, what has Mr. Refreshing been up to nowadays, aside from job hunting?” Oikawa asked casually.
“Studying mostly.” Suga sighed. “In school and in cram school by the way. It seems to be the only thing I’m busy with.”
“I’m assuming you’re going to university with all that studying you’re doing.” Oikawa said as he absentmindedly bounced the ball in his hand. “What field would Mr. Refreshing want his future in though?”
“I haven’t decided yet actually,” Sugawara heaved a sigh once again. He can’t help but think he’s been falling behind in his age group. It seemed like everyone had their futures set, except Suga. He could not help but recall when his homeroom teacher reminded him to focus on his future more all those months ago. “I was asked to retire from volleyball, you know? Right before the Spring Interhigh.”
“Oh.” Oikawa raised his brows at him.
“I guess when my homeroom teacher asked me that I started kind of started living in the present instead.” Sugawara smiled sheepishly. “What about you? Argentina, right?”
“Hmph, word travels fast it seems.” Oikawa smiled slyly. “Keeping tabs on me, Mr. Refreshing?”
“Hah, more like Kageyama making sure he’s updated on anyone he deems a rival.” Suga remembered how Kageyama’s brows knitted together as he read the text from one of his old middle school teammates. Kageyama burned with determination while Hinata jumped up and down excitedly, asking everyone how to become a pro player. “Anyway, you are going to Argentina, right? Like it’s set in stone?”
“Maybe.” Oikawa turned his gaze away. Suga could not help but notice the way Oikawa tensed at his question.
“Maybe? Is the Great Oikawa unsure of himself? That’s a first.” Sugawara teased him lightly.
“That’s where you’re very wrong Mr. Refreshing.” Oikawa smirked, though his eyes betrayed a certain sadness behind them. “It’s not me that’s unsure....”
“What do you mean?” Suga raised his brows in confusion. He always had the impression that Oikawa was the type to keep things upfront. He didn’t even bat an eye when news of him going to Argentina spread fast. Before Suga could ask any further, Oikawa had already knocked at Coach Takakura’s office.
“Ah, Tooru-kun!” Coach Takakura smiled brightly at Oikawa. He was a simple man, aged around his forties. The bags around his eyes did not deter the way he carried himself cheerfully. “What can I do for you?”
Oikawa shot Suga a glance, urging Suga to speak.
“Good afternoon, Takakura-san!” Suga bowed as he began to introduce himself. “My name is Sugawara Koushi. I saw the sign outside the community center, and I was wondering if you’re still looking for volunteers?”
“Ah, you want to help out and teach the kids some volleyball huh?” Coach Takakura smiled at Suga, though he still gave Suga a discerning look. “You play on any team?”
“I played since middle school,” Suga replied, a bit uncomfortable from Coach Takakura’s gaze. “Recently, I played for Karasuno ever since I entered high school.”
“Karasuno!?” Coach Takakura exclaimed. “Why didn’t you just say so? The kids were impressed with your game with Shiratorizawa.”
“Ah, thank you, Takakura-san.” Suga rubbed the back of his neck in embarrassment. He could also feel Oikawa’s eyes boring holes into the back of his head.
“Anyway, it would be great if you could help out!” Coach Takakura placed a hand on Suga’s shoulder. “What position do you play?”
“I’m a setter.” Suga replied. He could definitely feel Oikawa’s gaze right now.
“Oh! The same as Tooru-kun! Perfect.” Coach Takakura clapped his hands together. “We’re in the process of teaching the kids how to toss. You came in just at the right time, Sugawara-kun.”
“Thank you, Takakura-san.” Suga bowed again in thanks. At least he now has a part-time job to look forward to. “Oh, and Suga-kun is fine.”
“Suga-kun it is then!” Coach Takakura handed out a form for Suga to fill out. “You can start tomorrow, right?”
“Y-yes!” Suga was caught off. He did not expect that he would be starting so soon. “My schedule is clear on the weekends aside from cram school.”
“It’s settled then.” Suga handed over the form to Coach Takakura who received it with a smile. “I’ll see you and Tooru-kun tomorrow.”
“Thank you so much, Coach Takakura!” Suga bowed deeply.
“Haha, I should be thanking you Suga-kun.” Coach Takakura chuckled. “I could see Tooru needing a bit more help with rounding the kids up. They’ve been more energetic than usual lately.”
“I see…” Suga sneaked a glance at Oikawa who was pointedly avoiding his gaze. “I will be happy to help Oikawa-san with the kids.”
“Excuse you, Mr. Refreshing.” Oikawa sent him a glance back. “I can very much handle them on my own.”
“Mr. Refreshing?” Coach Takakura raised a brow at Oikawa’s words.
Oikawa could not stop the flush which rushed up his cheeks. Suga almost let out a laugh seeing Oikawa slip up.
“It’s just a friendly nickname between rivals.” Oikawa tried to defend himself.
“Glad to be considered a rival, Oikawa-san.” Suga slyly smiled at Oikawa.
“Hardly a rivalry though.” Oikawa scoffed. Suga resisted the urge to elbow Oikawa in the ribs.
“I see you two are already very much acquainted with each other.” Coach Takakura gave them a knowing smile. “So, you can start tomorrow right, Suga-kun? I'm afraid the kids have gotten too excited after hearing and seeing how Tooru plays. And I do think it’s better for you to get a grasp of how we run things here as soon as you can. The community center is hosting a mini-tournament after all.”
“Anything is fine with me, Coach.” Suga smiled.
“Alright then, I’ll see both of you tomorrow.” Coach Takakura clapped a hand on each of the two setters’ shoulders. “Stay safe on your way home.”
“So, what is the real reason why Mr. Refreshing wants to teach volleyball at the community center?” Oikawa asked. Takeru walked between them in silence. Something Suga was a bit thankful for because he wasn’t exactly sure how to continue talking to Oikawa, considering they have never uttered a word to each other before this day.
It was funny.
It seemed as if they have been orbiting each other all these years, never meeting, just simply existing within each other’s vicinity. Now, they were on their way to each other’s respective homes, it just so happened that said respective homes were more or less in the same area. Suga idly wondered why he had never caught sight of Oikawa Tooru all these years before meeting him on court. It made him wonder further if things could’ve been a whole lot more different had he encountered Oikawa earlier.
But Suga was thankful that he was given a chance to meet Oikawa one on one.
He had always known Oikawa through someone else’s eyes.
Be it as Kageyama’s rival (or idol, despite Kageyama’s protests), or as Daichi’s fellow captain.
Sure, Suga has his own rough impression of him, but it was nevertheless pieced together by what little he could see in the cracks of Oikawa’s mask when he was playing.
This would be the first time Suga or Oikawa himself actually interacted with each other. The first opportunity where Suga can actually get to know Oikawa on a more personal level, an Oikawa who was not on court or taunting his team.
“So…care to tell me Mr. Refreshing?” Oikawa asked. “Or would you like me to call you ‘Suga-chan’ first?”
“Call me ‘Suga-chan’ first since ‘Mr. Refreshing’ sounds like a mouthful even for you, Oikawa.” Suga said, a little bit relieved that the nickname will be used less. It’s not like he hated it. He was used to all sorts of nicknames…but being called Mr. Refreshing made his cheeks flush for reasons he would rather not dwell on.
“How thoughtful of you. Though, don’t expect me to drop that nickname just like that.” Oikawa sent him a teasing look.
“Of course. I’m already getting used to your antics anyway.” Suga answered with a look of his own.
“Okay, okay, back to my question then.” Oikawa stepped in front of Suga, hands nestled inside his pockets. Suga could feel Oikawa’s eyes studying him, scrutinizing his expressions as if Suga had committed some crime. “So, it’s a few months until graduation, and all of us third years are notoriously busy prepping for exams…so why volunteer?”
It was odd how Suga didn’t even think twice when he asked Oikawa where he can sign up for the community center.
Maybe it had been the air of familiarity. The fact that it involved something he loved. Or maybe it was him trying to extend the time he could play, knowing full well he wouldn’t be able to find the time once college started.
But none of those reasons hit the mark.
It was on impulse, an invisible string pulled him to it with the utmost care as if he was a mere child going down a flight of too steep stairs.
All Suga could think was ‘It was right.’
“Well, to be frank, I just went along with what felt right at the time?” Suga answered, his hand cupping his chin. “I guess you can tell I’m not the type to just go with a whim.”
“Ever the textbook player, Suga-chan.” Oikawa stepped to the side, walking in rhythm with Suga and Takeru. “I guess your team has rubbed off on you.”
“They sure did.” Suga let out a chuckle at Oikawa’s comment. “Actually, I was looking for a part time job the whole day. Still deciding on what path to pursue, you know?”
“Huh…” Oikawa observed Suga carefully. “I thought you were the type to have it all planned ever since you entered high school.”
“Not at all.” Suga let out a fond sigh. “The first thing on my mind when I went to Karasuno was the volleyball team.”
“I see.” Oikawa said. “I was the same…but for different reasons, of course.”
“Beating Ushiwaka?” Suga asked teasingly.
“Excuse you, Suga-chan. My goals do not consist of only beating Ushiwaka…that includes Tobio-chan too.” Oikawa joked.
Suga let out a snort. Of course, how could he forget Kageyama. “Alright, beating Ushiwaka and Kageyama then.”
“And it doesn’t end there.” Oikawa stopped walking ahead of them. He turned to Suga with a determined glint in his eyes. “I’m going to play volleyball at the highest level…and prove to everyone that my choices weren’t mistakes.”
“Oh…”
Suga could not deny that at that moment, Suga saw a person whose determination rivalled that of Kageyama and Hinata’s.
Someone who was willing to use every atom in his body to reach the top, gritting his teeth as he pushed through every challenge.
A king who was trying to build his kingdom from scratch.
Sometimes, Oikawa Tooru could really be larger than life.
However, this was new.
He had no idea that people were not as open to Oikawa’s choices in his career. He figured that, considering Oikawa’s caliber as an athlete, most people allowed Oikawa to do as he pleased with hardly any qualms. This was the first he heard that people were not as compliant with Oikawa’s decisions.
There was a brief pause before Suga saw Oikawa’s eyes widening in realization with what he just said.
“A-anyway,” Oikawa’s cheeks were tinged pink as he hid his face from Suga and Takeru. “Just so you know, the lessons for the kids start at around 10am tomorrow. We usually end around this time of day too. I’m sure Coach Takakura will brief us on what to do tomorrow to help. Just make sure you come early.”
“I-I see.” Suga tried to chase after the words suddenly spilling out of Oikawa’s mouth, taking note of the times Oikawa mentioned.
Before Suga could ask any questions, Oikawa stepped in front of him, holding his phone out.
“Here, let’s exchange numbers.” Oikawa said, seemingly back with his composure. With a nod, Suga handed his phone over to Oikawa. After saving his contact to Oikawa’s phone, Oikawa quickly handed Suga’s phone back.
With how quick things were going, Suga was a hundred percent convinced that Oikawa didn’t mean to let slip what he just said.
“We’ll be going this way.” Oikawa pointed in the direction opposite Suga’s usual route home. Oikawa gently nudged Takeru in that direction before animatedly waving at Suga. “See you, Suga-chan!”
“See you tomorrow, Suga-san!” Takeru awkwardly waved Suga goodbye.
“See you tomorrow!” Suga watched as the two figures disappeared around the corner.
‘Well, that was eventful.’ Suga thought. He felt like he just had a crash course on Oikawa Tooru.
He wished he could ask Oikawa about that bit about proving himself to everyone but he knew it was none of his business. His curiosity was still piqued, however. Maybe he’ll find out in some interview Oikawa does in the future or in some sports magazine column.
Nevertheless, Suga felt something has just shifted in the world in the past hour the moment he volunteered for the community center.
It placed him in between unease and excitement.
Shaking his head from his flooding thoughts, Suga turned at the corner of the street, running his way home to pick up his books before making his way to cram school.
If there was one thing Suga was sure of, it was that once was a coincidence, twice was fate.
Why was Oikawa Tooru in the same building as his cram school?
“Oh? Suga-chan, fancy seeing you here.” Oikawa asked, seemingly laidback. “Are you sure you’re not stalking me?”
“I should be the one asking you that, Oikawa.” Suga shrugged. “My cram school is here.”
“Oh? Well, I’m starting a language class tonight.” Oikawa said, leaning against the frame of the building’s entrance.
“Let me guess…Spanish?” At his words, Oikawa’s brows shot up in surprise. Suga watched as Oikawa schooled his features to a cool expression.
“Perceptive as always, Suga-chan.” Oikawa looked at him, impressed. “Though, I should have known you’d know.”
“You’re not exactly subtle, Oikawa.” Suga smiled as he stepped inside the building. “Anyway, want to lead the way in like earlier?”
There was a glint in Oikawa’s eyes that Suga could not decipher.
“As you wish, Suga-chan.” Oikawa smiled happily.
Needless to say, these last months of his senior year will be quite eventful.
