Getting Past It

Summary:

“I thought what I’d do-” CJ cuts herself off, shaking her head. “I thought we could sleep together. To get it out of our systems. The sexual tension. We could sleep together and then we could be past it. Both of us.”
---
OR: CJ shows up at Danny's place in the middle of the night with a new proposition as to how they can get past it.

Notes:

I have written far too little CJ/Danny given how much I enjoy them! So here's a little bit of smut for them :) And expect a part 2, given that I...didn't even get to the part that originally sparked the idea for this fic!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

It’s not often that Danny gets woken up in the middle of the night anymore.

There was a period of time where that was normal. Where he’d wake up halfway across the world to the sounds of bombs or screaming refugees. There was a time where he slept in a small tent, huddled around the other screwed up reporters that’d accepted a foreign war beat.

That was a long time ago. For the past eight years, he’s been covering the White House.

It’s not to say that there aren’t long nights at the White House. There are nights when CJ doesn’t put the lid on until the sun’s already starting to come up. There are nights where Danny has to stay up and race against the print deadline. He’s used to getting just a few hours of sleep, but he’s no longer used to getting woken up in the middle of the night.

And yet, his red numbers on his clock read 2:13 AM and there’s knocking at his front door.

Danny rolls over in bed, smacking his lips as he pulls the blanket around him and settles his head back down on the pillow. Just when he’s comfortable again, the knock comes again. He groans and wiggles his head underneath the pillow, but it does little to muffle the third knock, which has now escalated into more of a pounding.

He resists the urge to literally roll out of bed, knowing that his back will protest once he hits the floor. He drags himself to an upright position, then rubs his face to give him some energy before he stands. He can’t be bothered to fix his bedhead or to pull his pajama pants up from where they rest low on his hips, but he manages to grab a t-shirt and tug it on as he shuffles to the door.

He yawns as he opens the door but as soon as he sees who it is, his jaw clamps shut.

“CJ?”

Sure enough, there on his doorstep is CJ Cregg.

“Can I come in?”

“Yeah,” he murmurs, moving aside and making room for her. His brain’s still half-asleep, he doesn’t even think to ask her why

CJ hurries inside, glancing out at the street before she nudges the door closed. “Hello.”

“Heya,” Danny hums, reaching up to rub his eyes. Then, as soon as he thinks of it, to smooth out his hair. He must look like a mess. He scrubs a hand over his face again and hopes he wasn’t drooling too much in his sleep.

“Nice place.” CJ hasn’t really taken a second to glance around and given the lights are off, Danny doesn’t really think she has any idea what his place looks like.

Still, he murmurs, “thanks.”

“So…”

Once more, Danny rubs his hands over his face and eyes. He yanks at his eyebrow hairs, a little secret his sister taught him to figure out if he was sleeping or not. It hurts, so he must be awake. “CJ?”

“Yes?”

“It’s 2 in the morning.”

CJ tugs the sleeve of her coat up to glance at the delicate gold watch on her wrist. “2:18, actually.”

“Okay. It’s 2 :18 in the morning.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re here.”

“Yes.”

“Why?” Danny raises a brow. “I mean, I’m not opposed to it, I’m pretty sure you know that. I’m just wondering why. And how? Yeah, how? How did you know I lived here?”

“I know a lot of things, Danny.”

“But not how to kayak. I could still teach you. The offer still stands.”

“I had a different idea,” CJ poses. She pulls off her coat, awkwardly passing it between her hands. Danny steps forward, taking it from her and hanging it up on his coat rack. When he turns around, she’s closer. Just a few inches away from him really.

“CJ?” he whispers. He tries to keep his eyes from darting down to her lips, but he can’t. He never can.

“Yes?”

“What was your idea?”

Danny watches as CJ looks away from him, huffing out a tiny breath before sucking in a deeper one. “We have been on…three business dinners now,” she starts. She glances up at Danny, almost like she’s waiting for him to interrupt.

His tired brain quickly catches up and he supplies, “three dates, you mean.”

“They were business dinners,” she insists.

“Okay.”

“Nevertheless, they were all very…nice. I think we both had a good time. You looked very handsome, especially on the third one. I think they were good experiences for-”

“CJ,” Danny cuts in, a sense of deja vu washing over him. “It’s getting close to 2:30 in the morning and I was pretty comfortable sleeping, so is there any way we could move this along?”

“I thought what I’d do-” CJ cuts herself off, shaking her head. “I thought we could sleep together. To get it out of our systems. The sexual tension. We could sleep together and then we could be past it. Both of us.”

“O…kay,” Danny murmurs. He clasps his hands behind his back and pinches himself hard to check if he’s actually as awake as he thinks he is.

“How’s right now?”

“That’s fine,” Danny nods. No matter how confusing this is, he’s not going to pass up this chance.

CJ opens her mouth to speak, but Danny shakes his head. There’s no fish for him to worry about knocking over, but he has a feeling she’ll find another thing to say to stall them from the main event. It’s okay, it’s cute that she rambles when she gets nervous, but he’s pretty sure there are better things ahead.

He takes a step back, reaching out one hand for her. She quickly links hers with his and lets him lead her off towards the bedroom. She nearly trips over his coffee table, but she rights herself quickly and follows him into the bedroom.

“Danny?” she whispers as he nudges the door closed. He turns back to look at her, despite the worry in his gut that she’s already starting to regret this. His eyes scan hers, but he doesn’t find anything. “Can you turn on the lamp?”

He nods and wordlessly turns his bedside lamp on, looking back at her to see if it’s okay.

She nods and takes his hands, pulling her closer to him. “I want to see you,” she whispers before kissing him.

Danny’s always been the sweet talker in their relationship - if you can even call it that - but CJ has her moments. Danny melts against her lips and it’s his turn to squeeze her hand to steady himself.

CJ pushes him gently down onto the bed, lowering herself into his lap. Her fingers intertwine in the messy curls at the back of his head and Danny nearly loses it when she rocks her hips against his.

“CJ,” he whispers, pulling back just slightly so he can look at her.

“Shhh,” CJ whispers back, leaning down to give him another kiss. She rocks her hips again, slow and steady. The groan Danny lets out against her lips feels like a reward in and of itself.

Slowly, Danny moves to wrap his arms around her waist. He pulls her in close, closer, and lets himself get lost in her kiss. It doesn’t matter that it’s the middle of the night. It doesn’t matter that he still has no idea what prompted this. She’s here and she’s kissing him and there’s the promise of more. They can talk later.

Danny’s hands eventually catch up to his train of logic and he allows them to explore. He holds her hips, guides her rhythm with gentle presses. They move upwards, dipping just barely underneath her shirt. His fingers dance across her skin and he delights in the feeling of goosebumps being left behind in his wake.

CJ bites at his bottom lip and suddenly Danny’s very awake. He hooks one arm around her waist again, holding her steady as he flips them over. She squeaks and he dips to capture her lips again, the weight of his body pressing her down into the mattress. She wraps her long legs around his waist as he deepens the kiss and licks into her mouth.

The clock hits 3:00 AM before either of them even consider moving things forward. It’s easy to get lost in each other. It’s easy to forget that in just a few hours time, they’ll both be in the press room. Back on opposite sides. But for now, that doesn’t matter.

CJ moves to flip them again and the sight of her above him, straddling him with that gentle smile, knocks all the air out of Danny.

CJ nudges Danny’s shirt up, her hands smoothing over the expanse of his belly. He shifts, lifting his shoulders just long enough to pull his shirt off entirely and toss it across the room.

Danny watches as CJ’s eyes roam down, taking in his bare upper body for the first time. He can feel as he blushes, as it blows past his cheeks to reach out over his neck and chest.

CJ smiles and rubs her hands over his chest, bracing herself gently as she leans down again to kiss him. Danny’s hands quickly move, eager to expose her in the same way that he has been. They dive underneath her shirt, running along the column of her spine. He moves up, up, up, expecting to find the clasp of her bra. Instead, he just finds more and more skin.

CJ pulls away from his lips, just enough to whisper, “take it off.”

Danny’s good at following instructions. At least when they’re instructions he wants to follow. He pulls her t-shirt up over her head and off, setting it gently on his nightstand to be collected later. His shirt is in a heap somewhere on the floor, but it doesn’t feel quite right to throw CJ’s shirt away like it’s something to be discarded.

Danny’s hands go back to CJ’s hips, his thumbs pressing against her hip bones in a way that makes her sit up again. He bemoans the loss of her lips with a little snuffle, but it’s quickly replaced with a smile when he sees her.

“CJ…” he whispers, his hands slowly moving up. He looks at her, as if waiting for her to say it’s okay. As if she hasn’t turned up in the middle of the night and proclaimed that she wants to sleep with him.

CJ takes his hands and guides them to her breasts. Guides him to cup them and feel them and touch them in whatever way he wants. “Yes,” she whispers, just so he has the verbal too.

Danny would be lying if he said he hasn’t thought of this before. He’d be lying if he said he hadn’t thought of this many times. He never means to, of course. He climbs into bed with the intention of going right to sleep, only to end up tossing and turning for a while. His mind turns to her without him asking it to. The taste of her mouth, the smell of her skin, anything. Everything.

He lets his hands move, his thumb flicking over her nipple. His other hand roams up and down her side, feeling the subtle curves and shifts of her body. He touches her like she’s a work of art, like he’s a blind man that must preserve this through touch alone. CJ revels in it. She leans into his every touch and he leans right back. He pulls her down to kiss him again and she is quick to lick her way into his mouth.

Danny’s suddenly very aware that he’s dressed on the bottom. He can’t remember what underwear he put on when he got out of the shower, but he should’ve picked a pair of boxers instead. These are too tight now, too constricting against his throbbing cock.

“CJ,” he murmurs against her lips, shifting his hips just slightly.

“Yeah,” she whispers. She’s got a pair of sweats on and she’s quick to untie the drawstring before kicking them off. They go flying across the room, landing right with Danny’s t-shirt. Danny adds that to his mental list of reasons they should date - their clothes just go so well together.

CJ raises up from Danny long enough for him to shove his pajama pants down and kick them towards the end of the bed. She reaches down and rakes her nails slowly over his pulsing bulge. “That looks uncomfortable,” she whispers.

“Could say that again,” Danny agrees, once again shifting his hips.

“Seems like you should take them off then, huh?”

She doesn’t have to tell him twice. Within a second, Danny’s briefs are off and tossed somewhere to be found later.

CJ blows out a low whistle as she finally sees him in all his glory. “No wonder you’re so cocky,” she quips as she reaches down and wraps her hand around his cock.

Danny can’t help but shutter as she begins to stroke. Up, down, slowly. Up, down again, slower. Up, down once more, slowest. “CJ,” he pants, looking up at her with pleading eyes.

Usually, CJ would try and have more resolve. But it’s Danny. When has she ever been able to have resolve when it comes to him?

She pulls off her panties and sets them on the nightstand so she’ll be able to find them later. She has to go to the office in just a few hours and the thought of spending that time rummaging around Danny’s bedroom looking for her panties is less than pleasant. Or worse, going commando in the White House.

Danny takes advantage of CJ’s subtle shift in position, moving his weight so she tips over her side and lands flat on her back in the center of the bed. He leans down to kiss her, holds himself up with one arm while his other hand holds his hair back out of both of their faces. CJ bites at his bottom lip and he can’t help but groan into her mouth.

“Do you have-”

“Yeah,” Danny answers, reaching out to his nightstand and finding a condom inside. He has the urge to brush her panties into his drawer and keep them for himself, but he figures that wouldn’t go over too well with CJ. Not when morning comes and she has to find them, anyway. He’s got the feeling she isn’t the type to go snooping in drawers. Or maybe she is. Maybe she’d peek inside his medicine cabinet in the morning, maybe she’d-

“Danny?” CJ asks, drawing Danny from his thoughts.

Danny blinks, blinks a few times actually. “Sorry,” he chuckles and he can feel his cheeks getting red.

“It’s okay,” CJ whispers, leaning up and kissing him. She licks into his mouth, hoping to draw him back into the moment. It works like a charm. Within seconds he’s back to kissing her, holding himself up with one arm as his other hand works to get the condom on.

He pulls back slowly once the condom’s on, looking right into CJ’s eyes. She gives him the slightest nod, her lips spreading into a smile. “You sure?” he whispers, just to be safe.

“I’m sure,” she whispers back. She wraps her legs around him, taking the opportunity to bump her heel against his butt, spurring him forward.

Danny pushes into her slowly, his eyes fluttering shut as he focuses solely on the feeling. This isn’t the first time he’s thought about this, but god this is so much better than he ever expected it would be.

“Fuck,” they whisper together as Danny bottoms out inside her. Danny forces himself to open his eyes despite how much he just wants to get lost in this moment. The second they’re open, he’s glad he made that decision. CJ’s always beautiful, he always thinks she looks absolutely stunning, but she is breathtaking in this moment. Jaw just slightly dropped, brows slightly furrowed, he can’t get enough.

He kisses her and slowly starts to move, setting a leisurely rhythm. Her body moves with his, riding the ebbs and flows of pleasure together. Her hands wander, her nails digging into his back as he starts to pick up the pace.

“Danny,” she breathes, just to feel how his name feels in her mouth in a moment like this.

“CJ,” he whispers back, the corners of his lips curling up into the slightest of smiles. He resists the urge to tell her he loves her, instead he kisses her again.

CJ bites down hard on Danny’s bottom lip and he can’t help the way his hips buck in response. “Yes,” she whispers against his lips, her nails scratching his back again.

“You like that?” he whispers, keeping up the pace. He’s going faster now, harder, and the sound of their skin slapping together fills the room. CJ doesn’t have to answer verbally, the little whimpers and whines that flow from her mouth are enough to give Danny an answer.

Danny doesn’t realize it, but he’s making noises of his own. CJ can’t get enough of his little grunts, the quiet expletives that he can’t hold back. She wants more. She wants to hear him. She kisses his neck, bites down hard enough to make him groan. She soothes the bite with a lick and pulls away, admiring the red mark that’s beginning to flourish. It’s a little warm to wear a turtleneck (not that CJ has ever really seen Danny wear a turtleneck), but something tells her he’ll figure out some way to cover it up.

“Come on…” she whispers, letting her nails dig into his back just a bit more. “Come on, give it to me-”

CJ would’ve kept going if Danny had left her ability to. Instead he started to thrust hard and fast, punching the air out of her no matter how many breaths she takes. His hand comes between them, his fingers fumbling for a moment before he finds her clit and starts to rub.

She tugs him down, her arms wrapping around him as his body weight presses her into the bed. She buries her face in the crook of his neck, just in time to muffle a moan. Danny’s hammering on that sweet spot inside her over and over and over again.

“Fuck, oh…God, fuck,” she pants. She shifts, pulling Danny even closer so she can kiss him again. He mumbles something against her lips and she mumbles it right back. Three little words that she won’t say anymore by morning, but flow so naturally now.

Danny’s doing his very best to hold out, but he can feel the clock ticking down. He’s getting closer, closer still with every thrust. He groans into CJ’s mouth and tries to tense his muscles to slow things down. It doesn’t work. He can’t think about anything but her. The taste of her lips on his, the scent of her in his bed, the feeling of her wrapped around him.

“Shit,” Danny grunts as he pulls away. He’s starting to lose his rhythm, starting to falter because it all just feels too good.

In the end, he’s got no earthly idea who finishes first. He knows that he cums with a shout of CJ’s name and he knows that the feeling of her walls clamping down on his cock is probably the closest to heaven he’ll ever get. He knows that her nails scratch his back hard enough to sting and he knows that he doesn’t care if she draws blood.

His body goes limp when it’s all said and done. He musters up his last bit of energy to flop to the side, avoiding crushing CJ by a narrow margin. He reaches his arm out and she’s quick to curl up into his side. They’ll have to get up in a minute, he’ll need to grab their clothes and properly toss the condom away while she dashes to the bathroom, but for now they can just relax.

Danny gets his wits about him within a minute or two, starting to rub CJ’s back slowly. She lets out a quiet sigh, the sort of sigh a cat does once it’s flopped down on your lap. He lets his hand run down, resting it on her ass just because he can.

“CJ?” Danny whispers.

“Yeah?” she whispers back.

“Are you past it?”

The room goes quiet for a long time. Long enough that he worries she’s actually about to say yes. But then CJ moves, wiggling upwards so she can kiss him.

“I don’t think so,” she whispers. “Not yet anyway. Ask me again in the morning after round 2.”

Danny can’t help the smirk that tugs at his lips. “There’s going to be a round 2 in the morning?”

“If we can get to sleep in the next…” she cranes her neck to look at the clock, then looks up at the ceiling as she does a quick calculation, “13 minutes.”

“We can do that,” Danny nods. “I can do that in ten.”

“What’ll you spend the extra three minutes on?” She teases.

Danny cups her cheek and draws her in close, kissing away her smirk. “I can think of something,” he whispers before kissing her again.
