It was mid day on a summer Friday afternoon, the whole Matlin Family including Katie (since she was getting ready to go back for her first year at college) and Zig (cause they had needed a nice place to stay, which turned into a longer one) were out for a little back to school shopping trip for a few clothes and supplies. The family had just finished with extra school supplies. So it was onward to the clothing stores.
Zig was staggering a little bit behind the rest. The only one who noticed was Katie. Especially once he fully came to a stop so he could stare into a store window. There were a few things that caught his eye. There was also an overwhelming feeling that just wouldn’t leave. a continuous ping in his chest.
“Umm Zig Zag? Hello World of Z, are you in there?”
Katie snaps her fingers trying to get the others attention. He turns slightly to the side but has a frantic expression.
“Oh hey Katie.” Zig says shyly as he rubs the sides of one of his arms.
Katie studies Zig’s face closely as she smiles back. “Hey why don’t we go in? I’ve had my eye on something in here. So how about it?
Zig smiles and nods
Katie loops her arm with his as they walk into the store. Zig smiles a bit nervously. Zig thinks that Katie was going to walk with him over to the men’s section instead she’s leading them to the clothes he saw from the windows on the mannequins.
“Wh-why are we here? Zig tries to act as if he doesn’t care, but is really afraid of what’s to come.
“You were eying the cute dresses from the display right?” Katie asks kindly. she’d been noticing Zig’s change in attitude lately. Usually Zig was like a third sibling. And she’d rather see them all be happy than sad
“Well they reminded me a little bit of my mom is all” Zig tries to shrug it off but Katie’s not fully buying it. Zig turns his head to the side. he tries his best to not show that he’s tearing up.
Truthfully it really did remind him of his mom but that wasn’t the only reason why. Zig remembered how beautiful she’d looked in her dresses and how free she seemed. Zig would sometimes wish to be that free and beautiful.
Like pure graceful magic. He’d always dance along with her to the songs from their radio. Her in her dresses and Zig in his little tutu. She would always spin and Twirl him around for what felt like hours at a time with him in her arms. But it would never last.
Katie nods and comes up with another idea. “Well we could get it for her if you’d like.” Zig shakes his head. “No I’m sure she has something similar. And besides the others are probably waiting for us slowpokes!” He gives a fake smile, “so we should like go right?” Zig walks ahead of Katie.
Still not wanting her to see his disappointment or her pity face. Mostly the disappointment from not being able to just say how he felt to someone.
“Um okay but I think I’m gonna buy some things I had my eyes on. Wait for me?” Katie smiles fondly back as she yells back.as zig leaves. Katie buys the red sundress and the accessories she was eyeing for herself.
Katie text one of her college friends Delta before heading out to find Zig.
K -Need your help and advice on something-
D- I’ve got you what is it now? Please not any boy drama
K-Well kind of but it’s more family related
D-You aren’t you know pregnant?
K-no and please stop fishing
K-cause it’s going to get you no where
K-also kind of need to have a partner for that to work
D-hmm okay hear from you soon
Katie smiles as she leaves the store. Katie calls her mom to see where the others were. Her mom replies with H&M . Katie smiles at Zig as she holds her arm with theirs again. She leads them to the other store.
“Hey welcome back guys!” Maya goes to hug them. Zig hugs her back her back and gives a shy hey
“So where did you guys go?” Maya and Mrs. Matlin asks
“Katie was looking for her perfect dress or something like that” Zig gives off another shrug
Katie nods “Yep Guilty”
While in H&M Zig couldn’t stop wandering off to skate his fingers through some of the skirts and dresses. Katie catches the look again from earlier in the smaller clothing Boutique. “I’m fine with getting you a few you know.” Katie says softly.
Katie texts Delta again
K-So are you in town yet?
D-yes why?
K-well I’d like you to meet someone
D- okay where and who?
K-it’s for my soon to be adopted foster sibling. They seem to be having a hard time with expressing and we’re in a H&M. Juniors section
D-Okay on my way
K-thanks, I’ll update you if something else pops up
