Chapter 1: Barcelona Nights

Chapter Text

The streets of Barcelona buzzed with life - cobblestone alleys glowing under the soft golden lights, the air heavy with sea breeze and possibilities. The Sekai Taikai tournament had brought them here, but tonight wasn’t about karate. It was about freedom.

Miguel adjusted the collar of his shirt, the soft chatter of the rooftop bar humming in his ears. The sky stretched out in deep indigo, city lights glittering in the distance. Robby sat across from him, swirling a drink that was definitely strong.

“I can’t believe we actually made it here,” Miguel said, his words loosening from the buzz creeping through him. He tilted his head back, eyes tracing the sparkling skyline of Barcelona. The city seemed so alive, a stark contrast to the tension that often hung between him and Robby. Here, there was something different.

Robby smirked, leaning back against the balcony railing. “Yeah, who knew we’d survive long enough to be... step-brothers?”

They both laughed - awkward, but genuine. The tension that had always sat between them felt thinner tonight, like the city itself had offered them a rare kind of amnesty. They hadn’t been able to escape the years of rivalry and animosity that followed them - years of fighting, betrayal, and misunderstandings - but tonight, it didn’t seem to matter.

Miguel sipped his drink, feeling the burn trail down his throat. "You know, I used to think we’d never be able to sit like this without wanting to kill each other."

Robby raised an eyebrow. "You still flinched when I passed you the salt at breakfast."

“Old habits,” Miguel shot back with a grin. He couldn’t help but feel some sense of pride. Robby had always been unpredictable, even when he wasn’t trying to be, and tonight, there was a kind of freedom in how they had both allowed their guard to drop.

But beneath the teasing, something heavier lingered - years of rivalry, unresolved tension, and the strange closeness that had formed when they weren’t paying attention. It settled between them now, thick in the air, amplified by the drinks.

Robby’s gaze flicked toward the dance floor, where couples swayed lazily under string lights, their movements languid and soft. The music wasn’t anything special - just a mix of mellow beats - but the air felt charged, and the way the people moved together felt almost intoxicating. “You ever think about how weird this all is?”

Miguel tilted his head. “What? Us, here? Or...?”

“All of it,” Robby replied, his voice quiet, a hint of something Miguel couldn't quite place in it. “We were literally trying to knock each other out a year ago. Now we’re drinking in Spain like nothing happened.”

“People change.”

“Or they pretend to.”

The honesty in Robby’s voice hit harder than Miguel expected. He glanced at Robby, noticing how the dim lights caught the edge of his jawline, the way his usually guarded eyes looked softer here, under the Barcelona sky. They weren’t enemies anymore, but they weren’t exactly friends either - not in the way people usually understood friendship. This was different. They had fought so long and so hard, but somehow, here, in this city, things felt like they were beginning to shift.

Miguel thought about that. About the way Robby had been there for him, how they had both grown over the past year. There had been moments, glances, and quiet conversations where they’d found common ground. But this? This was something new - something uncharted.

“You’re not pretending right now,” Miguel said quietly. It wasn’t a question. It wasn’t even a challenge. Just an observation.

Robby hesitated before a small, reluctant smile tugged at the corner of his mouth. “No. I’m not.”

The words were simple, but they felt like a breakthrough. For the first time in a long while, there was nothing between them. No rivalry. No history. Just two guys, standing on the edge of something new. The moment stretched, and the city felt far away, as if it was just the two of them - on the rooftop, beneath the stars, sharing a moment that seemed to exist outside of everything that had come before.

Miguel smiled, his heart beating faster, but not from the alcohol. Robby’s eyes flickered to his lips, then away, then back again, and something in the air between them shifted. It wasn’t the soft, careful kind of connection people usually talked about when they fell in love. It wasn’t even the teasing, joking connection they had shared in the past, when they were still figuring out how to exist in each other's lives.

This was something else. It was raw, real, and undefined. It didn’t ask for permission - it simply was. Miguel’s breath caught in his throat.

"Don’t," Robby muttered, but there was no protest in his voice. It wasn’t a refusal. It wasn’t an objection. It was something else, something that Miguel couldn’t place.

And before either of them could overthink it, Miguel closed the distance. His lips met Robby’s in a clash of impulse and heat. It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t careful. It was messy, charged, and inevitable. Their mouths collided with urgency, and the world around them blurred. For a moment, there was nothing but the pounding in Miguel’s chest, the taste of Robby on his lips, and the rush of something electric between them.

For a second, Robby stiffened - but then he kissed back, rough and hurried, as if trying to erase years of fighting in a single moment. The kiss was desperate, raw, and filled with everything they had been unable to express before. The balcony, the city, the noise - all of it faded into the background, until there was nothing but them, the heat, and the tangled mess of emotions that neither of them had ever expected to feel.

They pulled apart, both breathing hard, their foreheads pressed together. Miguel’s heart was racing, his chest heaving, but there was no regret. Just the feeling of something irrevocable shifting between them.

“That-” Robby started, his voice hoarse, but Miguel was already dragging him back in, kissing him again. There was no room for questions, no space for hesitation. Just need. Just want.

The world spun. Time seemed to stretch, until there was no past, no future - only the present. The rush of adrenaline and the pull between them was undeniable. They kissed again, with even more fervor, a strange, dizzying freedom in it, as if Barcelona itself had granted them permission to be reckless. To embrace whatever this was between them.

The rest of the night blurred. Between shots of tequila, shared laughter, and more stolen kisses, they stumbled through Barcelona’s winding streets. The night was wild, unpredictable, and full of electric energy. They didn’t think. They didn’t plan. They simply existed in that moment - caught up in it, swept away by the chaos of their emotions.

The streets of Barcelona felt unfamiliar under their feet, their steps unsteady as they made their way to the hotel. Miguel’s hand brushed Robby’s as they walked, and it felt like an unspoken agreement, a silent acknowledgment of the storm they had unleashed between them. The city’s lights painted everything in a surreal glow, the vibrant colors mixing with the warmth of the alcohol still tingling in their veins.

By the time they reached their hotel room, everything felt like a blur. Clothes hit the floor in a messy trail, discarded with little thought. There was no space for doubt - only urgency, only heat. Each kiss, each touch, only intensified what they couldn’t quite articulate.

Miguel’s heart pounded as Robby’s hands roamed over his skin, his breath hot against his ear. He couldn’t remember how they had gotten here, only that it felt like they were finally letting go of everything that had held them back. The tension, the rivalry, the past - it was all a distant memory now, eclipsed by the moment they were sharing.

And then, there was darkness.
