Here Comes the Fly

Summary:

Self indulgent fluff wherein Kar'niss survives and creates a family.

""No, no, my darling little spider, you must eat the fly, not wear it," the silver haired drider laughed, his smile wide and displaying his fangs. Sharp teeth that - for the most part - no longer frightened Amaira. He still had his moments, times when she was unsure what she'd gotten herself into, but fewer and further between. Especially now. It would be unfair, and unwise, to make any claims that their child had repaired the man's fractured mind. But Kar'niss was so patient with the infant, making sure they had what they needed, rocking them to sleep in hanging webs he'd spun for the babe."

Notes:

Fyi, other installments in the Amaira/Kar'niss series are less fluffy, read at your own discretion.

Work Text:

This place really was too big for them, Amaira mused as she wiped down the large kitchen table. Moonrise Tower was easily meant to house dozens of people, if not more. Certainly, at least a dozen, with guards and many people coming and going for business and whatnot. It wasn't meant to be a home for a family of three. Even if one was a large drider whose long legs and bestial body required more space than your average father and lover. The whole situation was bizarre and surreal, and the tiefling wasn't always sure if her life was even real anymore. But it was a good life.

She'd been unsure what their child would look like, given what Lloth had done to Kar'niss, and there was no telling what the Absolute's meddling had truly done to the Drow. But at the end of Amaira's labors, there had been only a sweet-faced half-elf, half-tiefling with purple-grey skin, little nubs of horns and tail that was so chubby with baby fat, that Amaira rather thought the fat wrinkles would be permanent!

"Here comes the fly, my prince, my Kumo," Kar'niss cooed from nearby, where he had their son sitting up in a high chair they'd found in a storage room. It was carved with a moon, probably for Selune, but neither of the parents cared. It was simply a matter of getting the mashed up bits of vegetable into the child's mouth. And into his tummy! Kumo usually ended up wearing most of his meal despite his father's efforts. "The fly comes to the web,;en up, my spiderling!"

Amaira chuckled softly to herself, leaning forward on the table to watch the scene unfold. As Kumo grew, more challenges would arise. She knew that, and yet it was impossible to be anything but happy, watching the two of them. Kar'niss was a devoted father if one whose mind could not accurately be predicted. He must have always liked children, she decided, for he'd been so delighted at their 'spiderling', fawning over his 'Queen' for 'granting him the honor.'.

"No, no, my darling little spider, you must eat the fly, not wear it," the silver haired drider laughed, his smile wide and displaying his fangs. Sharp teeth that - for the most part - no longer frightened Amaira. He still had his moments, times when she was unsure what she'd gotten herself into, but fewer and further between. Especially now. It would be unfair, and unwise, to make any claims that their child had repaired the man's fractured mind. But Kar'niss was so patient with the infant, making sure they had what they needed, rocking them to sleep in hanging webs he'd spun for the babe.

"You will both need a bath afterwards," Amaira crossed the kitchen, laying a hand on her lover's shoulder while she rose onto her tiptoes to press a kiss against his cheek. Kumo had thrown as much food at his daddy as he'd eaten. It was incredibly… well… silly! Looking at the dangerous drider, covered in a light orange mash of what had been root vegetables and smiling indulgently at their child. Who was laughing happily because making a mess of his parents was, by far, Kumo's favorite game! Amaira couldn't wait to hear his little voice and watch him take his first steps. "I'll get the water started, when you're ready, I'll help you both wash up."

"Yes, Majesty," Kar'niss agreed happily, for nothing Amaira wished for could be wrong. She was such a clever Matriarch, and he loved her ever more for how much she loved their son! She would still want a daughter, surely, but still - what further proof could there be of her goodness and her perfection than this? That she loved them both, took care of them both! His devotion to them both was ironclad, as certain as the sun rising. And, as the perfect little one with dark eyes opened his mouth to swallow a spoonful that Kar'niss' clawed hand brought in, the drider was certain he'd never been so happy in all his life - whatever life he'd lost, it paled compared to what he'd gained!
