Like A Fever (Like I'm Burning Alive)

Summary:

Tadashi had always been a selfless person. He would always be the first to stick up for someone else, and to save someone who had found themselves in a tough spot. Whether it was his little brother who seemed to have a knack for attracting trouble, or one of his close friends, or even a stranger who needed a helping hand, Tadashi had always found himself being first to volunteer. He had never regretted it, not once. It was always better to take a chance and do something than regret it later.
He thinks he might regret it this time.

Tadashi survives the fire, but not unscathed.

Chapter Text

Tadashi had always been a selfless person. He would always be the first to stick up for someone else, and to save someone who had found themselves in a tough spot. Whether it was his little brother who seemed to have a knack for attracting trouble, or one of his close friends, or even a stranger who needed a helping hand, Tadashi had always found himself being first to volunteer. He had never regretted it, not once. It was always better to take a chance and do something than regret it later.
He thinks he might regret it this time.
The last thing he remembered- the last thing… was the night of the showcase. Hiro knocked it out of the park. Callaghan had been impressed. So had Krei. Once again, Tadashi stood up for his brother- Krei wanted the invention for himself.
What happened after that?
They were going to go home for dinner. Had he made it home? He couldn't remember.
Where was he?
Somewhere he didn’t recognize. And he was in pain. God, everything hurt so much. Waves of burning pain overtook his body. It was worse in his legs, but everywhere was in blazing hot agony.
What had happened? It was hard to think.
He and Hiro hung back. Where was Hiro? Was he ok?
He and Hiro were talking. Then- the fire. There was a fire.
It all came crashing back.
There was a fire, the expo center had caught. Callaghan was still inside.
Tadashi, ever selfless, had rushed in.
Hiro tried to stop him.
Maybe it would have been a good idea to listen to him.
Tadashi rushed inside- then what?
Tadashi grimaced in pain, feeling like he was still in the flame. Hot, hot flames enveloping him, suffocating him. What had happened to him?
He rushed in.
The building exploded.
It exploded, and Tadashi faced the blast full on. The building collapsed and crushed him.
He had been in a building explosion and survived. Not without taking significant damage it seemed, and now was- somewhere else. Not a hospital. What happened?
Tadashi laid in shock, scared to look down, to see the extent of the damage. He knew it would be terrible.
He looked down.
It was worse than he thought.
Bandages covered all visible skin, but had been applied haphazardly. From gaps he could see that the skin was almost all burned away, red, bleeding, and marred. His legs (oh god his legs) were splinted. He remembered them being crushed, remembered the overwhelming pressure. He lost consciousness soon after that.
So.
He had rushed in.
The building exploded.
He was burned over most of the front of his body, and half crushed under debris.
Someone had taken him here, treated his wounds, but obviously not a doctor.
What happened?
He looked around from his vantage point, a bed in a corner of a small room. It looked like a dorm. There was a nightstand next to his bed. Against the wall opposite him was a desk with a slightly outdated computer and a small 3D printer. In the opposite corner was a heavy metal door. Opposite the desk was another door that did not look as heavy.
That was it.
The walls and ceiling were devoid of any features, save a vent, a light switch, and a bright fluorescent light on the ceiling.
So he had been kidnapped. There was no other explanation for him being here.
Panic started to overtake him as the pain ebbed again and he faded out of consciousness.

Notes:

This is my first fic (that I've ever actually posted) and it's been bouncing around in my head for a while. Still deciding the exact direction I want to go with this fic. Rating, tags, and warnings may change so keep an eye out for that. 20 chapters is a rough estimate rn
