Chapter 1: Told Myself I Wouldn't

Chapter Text

“What's important to keep in mind is that Nova is generally a happy baby, this is just a little hurdle we have to come over, just like everything else before”

Stolas felt like screaming. This felt so much worse than the other complications.

First, her being so small had them hovering over her at night to make sure she didn't stop breathing, then the extra diet, sleep apnea treatments. Minor heart issues. Stomach issues. Seemed like every turn there was something that needed to be addressed in her health.

Now this, her legs aren't developing as expected and she has to start physical therapy— Maybe surgery. She hasn’t even been alive for a year and she has so many obstacles.

“We will strengthen her muscles and see where that takes us, as I can tell she's not in any pain, just wobbly,” the doctor reassured as she distracted little Nova with her magic swirls coming from her hooves.

But after several PT sessions, it was clear that some mobility aids would be necessary.

A little walker to help her move about more, while it opened up her world a little more to move about instead of dragging herself along on the floor, had Stolas trying to hover over her.

“Look at her go!” Fizz grinned, “little lady sure can move now!”

“Yeah, although the damn walker makes her look like a senior,” Blitz chuckles, “just gotta put some glasses and a cardigan on…”

Stolas was keeping himself busy with making sure things were out of the way for Nova, as she was eager to explore every corner of their home with her new walker.

“Oh I can see if me and Ozzie can get her something cooler,” Fizz offered.

“You guys usually design sex toys, is that something up your alley?” Blitz winced a little.

“Oh no,” Fizz laughed, “we also do medical equipment too! We designed my cybernetics too! I’m sure we can whip something up before her birthday!”

“Hmm maybe not a bad idea!” Blitz looked over to Stolas, “does that sound good, Stols?”

Stolas pushed an end table out of the way, “sounds– excessive– she’s just going to be using the walker temporarily… sounds expensive to just make for a short time.”

Blitz and Fizz shared a look, “uh– money isn’t an issue-” Fizz shrugged, “don’t mind it at all– plus could give us a way to start a line for kids like her too.”

Stolas looked up and let out a sigh, “okay– fine…”

Nova paused and looked up at Stolas, she put her hands up for “Up!Up!”

Stolas scooped her up, “be right back, she has to use the loo.”

Once Stolas and Nova were out of the room, Fizz turned to Blitz.

“He’s still not taking this whole thing well, is he?” Fizz asked in a whisper.

“Keeps beating himself over it,” Blitz sighed, rubbing his temples, “thinks it’s all his fault…”

While Stoals wouldn’t be completely wrong— it was one of those things that just couldn't be helped.

Sure, the medications, alcohol consumption did not help in the development of Nova’s egg. The lack of his Goetian magic– among other factors of being a hybrid just made everything harder.

If he had known sooner about the egg developing– he could have taken steps to be healthier— he was always drinking and taking his pills throughout the whole pregnancy—

Postpartum didn’t make it easier– always worrying about little Nova, the little runt had many challenges since being hatched. Sure, they had a very excellent doctor that was happy to take special care in Nova’s situation— but still didn’t help she was facing these issues because of him.

“He’ll come around,” Fizz encouraged, “it can be hard on any parent to see their kids go through this— but she’s a tough kid– and kids are pretty adaptive.”

“If this is gonna be how things are— I just don’t want Nova to grow up thinking she’s broken,” Blitz admitted, “he may not say it out loud– but if Stolas were to give her that impression…”

“Maybe it wouldn’t hurt for you two to get some family counseling,” Fizz suggested.

“Yeah–” Blitz huffed, “like that shit works for us– c’mon, Fizz…”

“Lucifer does family counseling,” Fizz suggested.

“Lu–” Blitz laughed, “you want me and Stolas to air our drama to the King of Hell???”

“Well,” Fizz drummed his fingers on the counter, “the guy is kinda in your drama– literally married you two not that long ago…”

“Yeah, but…” Blitz rubbed the back of his neck, “I— he’s just— I don’t think that will help– maybe he just needs a little more time– we have been either taking care of her or working.”

“We can watch her,” Fizz suggested, “let you guys have the night to yourselves.”

“Yeah maybe I can convince him,” Blitz nodded, “let me go talk to him- okay?”

“Sure thing,” Fizz gave a thumbs up, “good luck!”

Blitz chuckles to himself with a sigh– yeah he sure was going to need it.

Blitz walked upstairs to find Stolas sitting in Nova’s room showing her a photo album she had pulled out. She always liked taking a look through the book.

“Dada!” she squeals, slapping her hands down on the page with excitement.

Blitz feels that warm fuzzy feeling as he comes over to join them on the bean bag chair, “you guys having fun?”

“She really enjoys looking through your childhood photos,” Stolas hums, “maybe it’s the circus she likes?”

“Hmm could be,” Blitz shruggs, Nova was currently tapping on the photo of Fizz and Blitz as kids.

“Iz!” Nova squeaks.

“Yeah, Uncle Fizz,” Blitz smiles, “and daddy when I was little.”

Nova giggles and keeps looking at the pictures, mostly ones where Blitz and Barbie were feeding the horses.

“Hey,” Blitz whispered to Stolas, “Fizz offered to watch Nova for the night, I was thinking we can either go out for dinner or stay in? Get a minute together?”

“We can have that without sending her away,” Stolas still focussed on Nova.

“Yeah but…” Blitz looked down to Nova, “we haven’t had a date night– like— in a year– we could really use it…”

Stolas was the main caretaker of their daughter, he would always be with her– seldom she would be away from his sight unless with Blitz. From home, to work at the office– she was always at his side.

To have her gone in another’s care was a bit ask–

But… the look in Blitz’s eyes, practically pleading– he agrees.

Blitz was able to get Stolas to go out at least, a place that didn’t have a kid’s menu, but not too much that he would become overwhelmed.

“See, they even got those fancy rats,” Blitz added.

“Well, it is rather nice,” Stolas nods, circling the rim of his champagne.

“Oh relax, drink a little,” Blitz smiles, “we don’t get Nova until the morning.”

“Hm…” Stolas then shook his head, “no– I think I’ll just have them bring me a sparkling cider instead…”

“That’s cool too,” Blitz pulls the drink away, “no pressure…”

Stolas nervously re-arranged his utensils, “ah… this… feels weird– are you sure FIzzaroli could handle Nova for the evening— let alone overnight?”

“Yeah, don’t worry,” Blitz waved off, “she’s got everything she needs, and as promised he’s sending updates, everything is going smooth.”

Stolas let out a sigh, “I’m sorry– you went through the trouble and I'm spoiling it…”

“No,” Blitz shook his head, resting his hand on Stolas' hand, “it's alright, it's been a lot for all of us…”

“I just want her to be… okay…”

“She will be, one way or another, she's a Buckzo– she's tough as nails- literally punched her way out of a shell.”

Stas chuckles a little, “that she did!”

“She’s happy and she's thriving, she's adapting well and you did that Stols, you're so patient with her and encouraging, following her lead,” Blitz nearly tears up.

“Oh darling,” Stolas cups Blitz’s cheek.

“I just don't want you to beat yourself up, okay?” Blitz held his hand, gently rubbing it.

“right…”

“Whatever comes our way we are gonna do it together, right?”

“Just like everything before, of course”

Some beverages were calmed, Stolas could take some comfort that he wasn't alone, their daughter was always going to come first and Blitz’s confidence in things working out–

He learned to trust that instinct.

After dinner Stolas and Blitz were able to go home to pure bliss of silence, something that the walls of the villa had not seen in nearly a year.

Blitz wasted no time to set the mood in their bedroom, “you wanna kick off our anniversary by twisted up in the sheets?”

Stolas blushes pulling Bliz forward, “oh how else would we enter it?”

Even if brief, a moment to reflect jus
