Chapter Text
Alphys shakes a little as she enters the gigantic high school building. It is her freshman year, and all of her friends are in the years below her. She frowns as she looks down at her schedule. Her locker is far from her classes. She sighed and started hurriedly to her locker. It is at the back of the school. She has to dodge and weave past the much taller monsters as she rushes to not be late on her first day. Just when she’s about to reach her locker, she slams into someone. Her stuff goes flying everywhere.
“I-I’m so sorry! I-i-i didn’t see you” Alphys stammers out. The skeleton monster just chuckles.
“it’s no problem, you just rattled my bones a little” He then winks, and Aplhys giggles. The skeleton bends down and helps Alphys gather her stuff. She smiles gratefully and grabs her stuff from him. He then sticks a hand out. “i’m sans, sans the skeleton”
Alphys goes to shake his hand as she says, “I’m Alphys” Then a loud fart noise perpetrates the crowded hallway. Alphys face goes bright red from embarrassment as Sans lets out a hearty laugh.
“the old whoopie cushion in the hand trick, it’s always funny” Sans's permanent smile seems to get wider. Alphys looks around and notices that no one is really paying attention as they are more focused on getting to class.
A small smile graces her face. “U-uhm what’s your first class?”
Sans hands her a very wrinkled schedule and she notices that he has a couple of classes with her. She also notices who is listed as his parent. “Y-your dad is the royal scientist?!” She squeaks as she hands the schedule back.
Sans takes his schedule back and shrugs,”huh i guess he is, didn’t notice that” Sans looks at his bare wrist and then looks up at Alphys, “well look at the time, i got to get to class, see ya” He waves and starts walking in the completely wrong direction. Alphys goes to stop him but she can’t see him anymore. Alphys looks around but the tardy bell starts to ring so she hurries as fast as she can to her first class, she’ll put her stuff in her locker later.
The final bell rings right when she enters the class. Luckily the teacher wasn’t in the classroom yet so she lucked out. Alphys looks around trying to find an open seat when she sees Sans again. She blinks in confusion and goes to sit next to him. “H-How did you um get here before me?” she stammers as Sans lazily looks over, “eh i knew a shortcut” he winks. Alphys doesn’t even want to begin to comprehend how a skeleton can wink but she just decides to chalk it up to monster magic. Alphys has never met a skeleton before. As far as she knew there was only a small group of skeletons left. The rest were killed in the war. Alphys realizes she's been looking at Sans a little too long so she hurriedly turns to face the front of the room. A tall bunny monster enters the class and starts to write on the board. This must be Alphys teacher.
Alphys walks out of her fourth-period class, utterly exhausted. It's only the first day but all of her AP classes had placement tests today so her brain is a bit mush. She walks into the lunch room and just collapses at the nearest table. She groans as she lays her head on the cool polished table.
“man tough day huh?” Sans says he is sitting across from her with a ketchup bottle and a greasy burger in hand. Alphys just nods. “Why did every class have a test on the first day!” She complains, resting her head on her hand. Sans shrugs and starts to eat. His mouth doesn't move but the food is disappearing. Alphys sighs and she opens her lunch box. She pulls out her favorite soda, a sticky yellow liquid that doesn't have a brand name, and her Mew Mew Kissy Cutie exclusive sandwich box which holds her Mew Mew Kissy Cutie-themed sandwich.
“so you seem to like uh that cartoon. tibia honest, i never got the appeal” Sans says while chewing his burger, not that Alphys can see him chewing, she just knows he is. Alphys gasps in shock when he calls the greatest anime of all time a cartoon.
“You’re joking, right? No way did you really just call Mew Mew Kissy Cutie a cartoon? It’s an anime and it….” She continues on her rant. Sans has finished all his food at this point and is just watching her talk. Eventually, his eye lights go out and he falls asleep.
“And! Huh? Sans? Did you seriously fall asleep?” Alphys stops her rant when she realizes her audience has fallen asleep. She sighs and just decides to finish her food, leaving Sans to nap.
The rest of the lunch period continues in silence at their table while everyone else seems to be shouting at the top of their lungs. Alphys takes out her sketchbook and starts to draw some body of sorts. The legs look fantastic.
The period ends and now it's mostly just extracurriculars that Alphys signed up for. The next class is her robotics class. Then it would be her art class and the last class of the day is drama. Alphys feels very excited for the rest of the day.
Alphys gathers up all of her things at her locker and puts her backpack onto her back. She stretches a little before getting ready to start her walk home. She lives in Hotland so it's not that far from the school but it doesn't mean she likes the walk. She makes it outside of the school before she realizes that Sans has been walking with her. “Sans? How long have you been here!” She jumps a little in shock.
“heh sorry didn’t mean to rattle your bones, but eh i’ve been here since we were at our lockers. i just didn't say nothin’ cus you seemed to be thinkin’ pretty hard” Sans jokes, Alphys notices that he has a space-themed backpack.
“It’s okay, I was just dreading the walk to Hotland,” Alphys says readjusting her backpack. Sans seems to smile wider but it’s hard to tell.
“that sounds really hot. good thing i’m going to snowdin. it’s real chill there” Sans somehow smirks through his voice. His face doesn't change at all. Alphys giggles.
“Sans you got to pass through Hotland to get to Snowdin,” Alphys says as they walk through the capital, trying to get to one of the many elevators.
Sans winks,”nah i know a shortcut” Alphys shakes her head and in the brief moment she looks away, Sans disappears. Alphys looks around the surrounding area but doesn’t see him anywhere.
“One of these days I have to ask how he does that,” Alphys mutters out loud before continuing her walk home.
