Work Text:
“Mizi, will you be my princess?”
“No!” Mizi shook her head vigorously before shooting her a wide grin. “I’m going to be Sua’s knight!”
Sua jolted awake in her bed, sweat running down her face. She clutched her chest, feeling the erratic beats of her heart as she heaved deep breaths to calm herself down. Then she untucked the bed covers and slipped outside, walking towards the basin and spraying herself with cold water.
Sua roughly wiped her face with the cloth. Despite washing up she didn’t feel refreshed at all as the dream ran in her head again.
“That dream…” She sighed. “Rather than a dream it was a painful memory.”
A frown marred her beautiful features. Really if she’s going to dream about Mizi can it not be the day she was rejected.
Sua shook her head as more thoughts plagued her mind. Perhaps this is better than worrying tirelessly over Mizi who didn’t hesitate to join the war their allied kingdom was involved in. Sua couldn’t blame her, not when Mizi is a captain of the knights at such a young age, her sense of responsibility is greater than all of the knights their kingdom has combined.. And yet despite having that rank Mizi never relinquished her position as Sua’s personal knight.
It was stupid. Her taking Mizi’s rejection to heart when it happened when they were children. Sua had never doubted her feelings for Mizi other than love so what’s the best way to convey it by asking for her hand in marriage. Granted, she never directly asked for her hand but it would’ve been obvious that she wanted to marry her because since she’s a princess her wife would be one too.
She walked back to her bed and grabbed the nearest pillow she could find, she stuffed her face in it and screamed her frustrations out.
For years she and Mizi have been dancing around each other. Sua’s not delusional, they simply haven’t found the right time to confess, that’s probably it. They haven’t found the right timing for them because every time Sua thinks they’ll finally admit to their feelings some incident seemed to pull them away from each other. Sometimes, Sua wondered if Mizi is aware of the feelings she harbored towards her. Was Mizi fulfilling her promise to be her knight, her way of saying that they should simply remain friends and nothing more? Was it her simply drawing a line between them? Was it an indirect rejection because she didn’t want to hurt Sua by bringing it out in the open.
Sua was taken out of her musings when she heard a knock from the door. It must be the maids, sua mused, taking note that they’re quite earlier than usual. She let them clean her up and dress her as they’ve been instructed, Sua sat still at her vanity table like a doll being pampered. When they’re done they excused themselves and Sua acknowledged it with a nod.
She stared at her reflection in the mirror, she was wearing a pristine white dress that accentuates her fair skin, the only jewelry she wore was a necklace that has an amethyst pendant carved into a clematis to match her eyes; it was Mizi’s gift for her when she debuted. It was a simple getup yet she exuded grace with every movement she made.
There was a knock on her door again and Sua’s confident that it wasn’t some servant. She stood up and walked towards the door to let the guest in.
She was right.
It wasn’t just anyone.
It was the king himself. Her half-brother, Luka.
Sua stood aside to let him in and Luka strided inside as soon as he was able to.
“What brings you here, older brother?” It was just them, no need for formalities.
While the court might think they’re against each other, there has never been a sibling rivalry among them; for the three siblings had reached an understanding from such a young age.
Yes, three. She has another brother. Her twin, who was younger than her by a few minutes, Ivan.
The twins weren’t interested in having the crown for themselves so they’ve decided they would support Luka but to protect themselves they never revealed their intentions and they participated in the succession rights to show that Luka has gained the right to succeed fair and square. In return for their cooperation, Luke swore that he would not remove their titles nor would he use them as pawns in his game. The three of them schemed and won and that’s how it would always be.
While Luka might be sickly no one could deny his brilliance and precision in being a strategist, while Sua’s calm demeanor has made her a great advisor to Luka and Ivan who prefers being on field is the commander of all the knights who swore their fealty to them.
“Ivan sent a message.” Luka said before staring off at the view beyond her balcony. He was letting Sua take her time to digest the news he had shared. He knew how the war has stressed out his younger sister since it was the first one that her beau has participated in and from what he has gathered from Sua’s rare outbursts Mizi has never written a single letter to her in five years.
“Mizi…”
A faint smile painted Luka’s lips, he rolled his eyes too since his prediction was right. Of course his sister would ask for her first. “She’s alive.”
Sua let out the breath she was holding, tears pricked her eyes at how relieved she was to hear that from Luka.
“W-When—” Sua cleared her throat, composing herself first before speaking again. “When are they returning?”
“Ivan estimated they’ll be here in a fortnight. They’ll celebrate their victory first there and then Prince Till will be accompanying them. There were talks about marriage.”
“Huh?”
Luka ignored the dumbfounded look on Sua’s face and continued, finding it amusing as he purposely left out some details in Ivan’s message; he’s simply respecting Ivan’s wish to keep some things under wraps. “Ivan’s handwriting has deteriorated but he mentioned about a ring and Mizi —”
Her world collapsed.
She couldn’t bring herself to listen anymore to what Luka was saying. It couldn’t be—
Her head was filled with the brief time the royal siblings of the neighboring kingdom spent their summer in theirs. She didn’t care much for Hyuna and Till but she did remember how annoyed she was whenever the latter would take up Mizi’s time that was supposed to be spent with her. He was like a leech that wouldn’t leave her alone. And there was Ivan seeking Till’s attention and Luka courting Hyuna.
Her neck snapped when she abruptly turned to Luka. “Are you getting married?”
There was a pregnant pause and Sua almost thought that he was.
“I wish.” He deadpanned and Sua didn’t hesitate to punch him in the shoulder which earned her an indignant grunt.
Luka rubbed the injured area, pretending to be hurt when he’s aware that Sua isn’t even that strong to begin with. “I’m leaving the preparation of the celebration to you, sister.”
He gently patted Sua’s head with his uninjured arm. “I hope it’ll distract you from things that are bothering you.”
With that Luka left her room and instead of being distracted as Luka hoped Sua could only drown in her unwanted thoughts as she desperately tried to avoid thinking of the possibility that maybe she was wrong all along and that she might have lost Mizi.
“Are you sure that leaving out important details is the best way to go about this?” Till hissed at Ivan who only had a carefree expression.
“Luka would definitely inform Sua about the contents of the message I sent.” Ivan grinned, his eyes shining with a mischievous twinkle. “She’ll thank me later once the surprise proposal is a success.”
“Not that.” Till groaned, hitting Ivan on the shoulder. “I mean about the part where,” his cheeks are suddenly tinged with pink flushes. “Us. Married.”
Ivan pulled him by the nape and pressed their lips together briefly then he flashed a charming smile at him. “I already have Luka’s approval.”
“He’ll approve anything as long as it helps him get back into Hyuna's good graces.” Till grumbled.
“I meant Sua, your twin. She hated me right?” He sighed remembering the deathly glares Sua sent her way when they were children. And how awkward it is to share the same space with her.
“Because you kept hanging around Mizi and taking away her time of the day that was supposed to be for Sua.” Ivan cheerfully said, finding amusement at how silly they were back then.
“But it was Mizi who dragged me along first,” Till protested, then he lowered his voice, ears bright red. “and she’s the only one I could talk to you about.”
“So you and Mizi talked about me and Sua?” Ivan teased.
“We’re talking each other’s ear off and we’re constantly wondering why we fell for the most annoying set of twins too.”
They both laughed and their gazes found Mizi who was laughing and singing along with Hyuna.
“Wanna bet?”
Till raised his eyebrows in question.
“I bet Sua will lose her mind when she sees Mizi.”
“Mizi would grovel for not writing back at least once for five years.”
They shook hands, understanding that whichever situation happened first would herald the winner. The prize for their bet is theirs alone to know.
“Ivan! Till!” Mizi waved her at them and they waved back as she walked towards them, drinks in hand. She handed it to them before sitting across from them. “Congratulations again on tying the knot!”
“You helped us a lot Mizi.” Ivan smiled at his sister-in-law, everyone knew about Mizi’s affection for Sua, it didn’t take long for them to put two and two together, not when Ivan ran around the camp addressing her as such whenever they could find time to let their guard down.
Till being the emphatic between the two of them directly asked Mizi why she sought them out. “Are you nervous, Mizi?”
“I…” Mizi sighed. “I am. I don’t know if Sua would even talk to me once we’ve returned.”
She ran her hand over her hair, her now short hair which she regrets. Because she has always kept it long so she could find an excuse to spend more time with Sua by asking her to braid her hair. They would always spend their time together in Sua’s chambers, the music room, the library and their secret place in the garden. There Mizi enjoyed the close proximity they have whenever Sua would make her sit in front of her to braid her hair, the way her fingers threaded her hair, when her fingertips would lightly scratch her scalp soothingly, how Sua hums softly, her voice so enthralling it brought her peace.
Mizi missed her ardently. She wanted to write back to Sua but after reading her letters and sensing the worry and desperation Sua had for her she decided it was better to not give her false hope in case she doesn’t survive. Mizi didn’t simply join the war because it was her responsibility as a captain of the knights, she had ulterior motives too just like any other human being. She’s aware of the rumors surrounding her rise to this position, she knew many people doubted she achieved this fairly, from her belonging to a renowned family of knights to being playmates with the princess. She wanted to prove that she can achieve such feats with her own hands and perhaps she would finally feel worthy enough to ask for Sua’s hand.
Sua never let her feel that she was not enough. It was only Mizi who couldn’t accept that Sua was capable of loving her as she is. Mizi doesn’t want Sua to hear the nasty talks and gossip that she has heard. She wants to stand on equal footing with Sua, she wants to be in a place where no one could question her right to stand alongside her.
All her life she has always pictured herself like the knight protecting her beloved princess in the fairytales. That’s why when Sua asked her if she wanted to be a princess she refused because how could she be allowed to be with Sua if she wasn’t a knight. Mizi knows that no matter how renowned her family is there are those with higher ranks who covet to be closer with the royal family. Mizi knew her place and the gap between her and Sua was too noticeable. She could clearly remember the defiance in Sua’s eyes that one time she witnessed a noble harassing Mizi for being her friend, her confidant. She also remembered with clarity the blank expression Sua had as she commanded a passing servant to escort that noble outside and ban them from ever stepping foot in the palace. Mizi couldn’t forget the chilling coldness of her voice and how she immediately returned to being warm again when she approached her.
Mizi was afraid to be on the receiving end of that side of Sua that she has only witnessed but was never directed at her. She was afraid that due to her keeping Sua in the dark she had lost her princess’ affections. As she stewed in silence Mizi unconsciously gripped the cup in front of her tighter, her knuckles turning white.
She was lost in her thoughts and her two friends couldn’t bring themselves to pull her out of it. They silently wished for luck and love to be on her side once they arrived in the kingdom.
Sua had a blank expression on her face as she listed the final touches needed for the banquet that would commence later to celebrate their victory. Deep inside she has already murdered Luka numerous times and in various ways too.
Making her do all the work here didn’t ease her mind at all. If there’s anything she got out of this it’s not being able to sleep, hence she didn’t get a chance to dream about Mizi’s rejection.
Mizi.
Mizi.
Mizi.
Sua was lost at this point. No, she’s been lost for five years ever since Mizi stopped talking to her. She likened herself to a sailor who couldn’t find the north star to guide them home.
With Mizi coming back will she finally find herself home or would she simply be forever adrift and forced to love her from afar.
Aside from Luka’s murder her mind was filled with different scenarios on how she and Mizi would reunite.
Luka put an end to her fantasies by declaring that there would be a welcome parade and Sua would be by his side to welcome them.
A servant came to inform them that they had already entered the gates. Together they walked silently to a balcony overlooking the capital where they would receive them. Sua could barely hear the thunderous cheers and applause the citizens gave as she was too busy listening to the thundering stampede of her heart.
Earlier she was wondering if she should cut her hair, contrary to her habit of keeping it short she decided to grow it long during her separation from Mizi. Her long hair reached until her waist but she knew Mizi’s hair was still longer than hers.
She couldn’t pinpoint which emotion she’s feeling now, whether it was anticipation or was it dread that her fears would be confirmed once the army presented themselves to them. From the corner of her eye she saw Luka giving signals while she remained despondent by his side.
Sua could no longer tell the time because her waiting felt too short and long at the same time. It was in between moments until everything fell into silence.
Oh.
Oh.
Her bright violet eyes landed on her beloved, on Mizi. Even with her helmet on Sua knew it’s her because the charm she had made by hand was worn securely around her wrist. Sua unconsciously smiled, the brightest smile she has ever shown in years.
At Luka’s signal all the knights removed their helmets and they bowed to him.
Sua gasped. She was expecting for luscious, pink hair to flutter in the wind at once but what greeted her instead was shoulder length and the cutest of curls atop Mizi’s head.
She took a half step back, unable to believe that Mizi has grown more beautiful, ethereal and quite dashingly handsome. She reminded Sua of how the knights in the fairytale books they’ve read were depicted. But none of those words who sang praises could ever compare to her Mizi.
Heat gathered in her cheeks when they made eye contact and Sua shivered as Mizi mouthed her name before bestowing upon her a huge smile. Her heart fluttered at the attention directed at her. How Mizi was blatantly ignoring Luka’s speech and how she only had eyes for Sua.
Sua glared when she felt Luka nudged her then he tilted his head for her to follow him out. It seems his speech was over and the knights would get to have the day to themselves and attend the celebratory banquet later.
She nodded but she decided to linger more to look at Mizi, she watched Ivan dismiss the knights and as they dispersed a teal haired man approached Mizi, belatedly Sua realized that man was Till. She frowned at the closeness they were displaying as Mizi turned bright red and she proceeded to smack Till for whatever it is that he whispered. Her hand clenched, finger digging into the palm of her hand, when Till got closer and whispered into Mizi’s ear. Mizi jolted and abruptly turned to where she stood but Sua’s heart felt heavy and she immediately turned to walk away. Unaware that Mizi’s eyes never left her and her gaze continued to follow her retreating figure.
Mizi walked behind Ivan and Till to the throne room, she couldn’t stop thinking about the hurt expression Sua had before she left.
When their gazes met Mizi felt at peace and that everything was going to be fine, all her fears disappeared at the sight of Sua’s brilliant, charming smile. It belatedly occurred to her that Sua has grown her hair out, she honestly wouldn’t have noticed it immediately if it weren’t for Till pointing out that she and Sua had unintentionally swapped hairstyles. Her blush spread from her cheeks to her ears as she finally took in Sua’s appearance in a different light. The dress she wore hugged her figure scrumptiously, her hair was like the sky in the deep of the night, and — Mizi’s heart skipped a beat as she spied from where she was standing that Sua wore only one piece of jewelry and it’s the necklace she gifted her.
Mizi was caught off from her thoughts when she felt someone shook her hard. When she got her bearings she found Ivan and Till in front of her, both of them showing concern.
“Mizi, Luka’s been calling you a few times now,” Ivan was supposed to say more but Luka cut him off.
“Hey, call me king.”
“Call him brother-in-law.” Ivan retorted and as he and Luka continued their petty arguing Till asked her why she spaced out.
“I’m not going through the surprise proposal.”
Her declaration left the three men in front of her in shock for a second before Luka and Ivan bombarded her with questions of why or if she really lost her mind when she saw Sua.
“Mizi, is grand duchess not enough of a title? I can invent one if that’s what you need —” Luka had genuine shock and concern written over his face and if Mizi wasn’t in the middle of explaining her side she would’ve pointed out how it’s the first time she has seen him wear that expression.
Ivan grabbed her by the shoulders, sweat running on his face, panic laced his voice. “Mizi, I know my sister’s a pain but you have to believe me when I say she’s desperately and madly in love with you.”
Till having enough of their hounding, roughly grabbed Ivan by the nape and got him off Mizi, giving her space to breathe.
When they’ve all calmed down Mizi speaks again.
“I still want to propose to Sua but instead of going through with our plan. I want to do it when it’s just the two of us.”
The trio happily gave their support and while Luka grabbed the scroll inscribing his declaration to make her a grand duchess as her reward for her contribution in their victory the newlyweds scooted to the side and applauded her.
Before she parted ways with them Luka reassured her that he’ll make sure Sua will attend the banquet later.
Mizi aimlessly walked along the corridor. She doesn’t have much to prepare because her preparation has been ongoing for five years now. And before they entered the capital she met with her mother and she passed along the ring Mizi had left in her keepsake before she left.
She put her hand inside her pocket then she fished out a small, velvet box. She flipped the lid open and she stopped in her tracks.
She’s right in front of Sua’s room.
She can do it right now.
She can.
But it doesn’t feel enough.
She wanted Sua to be happy but if she’s the cause of Sua’s distress then maybe seeing her right now wouldn’t do any good.
Mizi closed the lid of the box and with a heavy heart she walked away.
As she turned to the corner she didn’t expect to bump into anyone.
Or to be clear, she didn’t expect to bump into Ivan and Till who has been tailing her ever since she left the throne room. Mizi blinked in surprise and before she could ask them what they were doing, a panting Luka joined them, he was trying to catch his breath but he still managed to complain about how they left him.
Till raised a hand making a thumbs up while his other was making a thumbs down then he tilted his head in question. While Ivan and Luka both had identical expressions, one eyebrow raised in question. Looking at them made her giggle because she has seen the exact look on Sua’s face but much more softer and tender.
“Not yet,” Mizi said in a hushed tone. “But I have a plan and I’m going to need your help.”
The four of them huddled in the corner and discussed the new plan in detail. Mizi told them everything she needed and the three would nod their heads or suggest some things too.
Mizi felt a weight off her shoulders and she’s decided that it’s better if she could talk to Sua first and her heart couldn’t wait to see her again.
They parted ways and Mizi turned around the corner again, this time walking confidently to the entrance of Sua’s chambers.
Mizi took a deep breath and raised her hand to knock on the door, knocking in a rhythm that only she and Sua shared.
A few minutes passed and there was no answer. She was about to knock again when she heard a scuffling sound followed by erratic footsteps.
The door bursts open and she is greeted by a flustered Sua. Her breath caught in her throat as she finally got a closer look at her princess.
In her eyes Sua looked divine, she couldn’t simply be a mortal like her. And when Sua tucked an errant strand to her ear Mizi almost fell to her knees.
Almost.
Because Sua caught her in her arms and her senses are immediately flooded with Sua.
“Mizi!” Sua exclaimed in panic and yet despite that Mizi registered her voice as the holiest melody she has ever heard.
Unconsciously Mizi wrapped her arms around Sua, tugging her close and burying her face in the crook of her neck.
She’s finally home.
The peace she felt didn’t last long because she realized that Sua was tensed in her embrace. Mizi gulped before she slowly pulled away, still keeping Sua in her arms because she’s afraid that if she lets go Sua would close the door in her face.
“Sua.”
Her head bowed in shame like a sinner asking for repentance. Her bright amber orbs stared at the floor, tears gathered in the corner of her eyes.
“Sua.”
Her voice trembled as she tried to keep the tears at bay but it was quite evident in her tone that she’s close to tearing up.
“Sua.”
Mizi felt dainty hands cupping her cheeks as Sua’s feet came into her vision. Then the hands holding her gently tugged her face upwards. Mizi followed suit and her tears fell freely as she saw that Sua was crying too.
“Welcome home, Mizi.”
Sua beamed at her before pressing their foreheads together. Her hands moved over to hold Sua’s hands, covering them with her own and entwining their fingers together.
“I’m home, Sua.”
Their joined laughter filled the corridor and once a comfortable silence settled over them Sua pulled her inside.
Her eyes wandered across the chambers, it’s been so long since she last stepped foot in here.
Wordlessly Sua began unbuckling her armor. Mizi helped her as a wistful smile painted over her lips when she remembered all the times Sua has done the exact same thing every time she would go come and see her after her training.
With her armor out of the way Sua took her hand and pulled her to the bed, they both fell down giggling as they did so.
“I missed this.” Sua admitted in a low voice and it tugged on her heartstrings.
Mizi couldn’t take it any longer, she reached for Sua’s other hand, prompting her to face her, then she placed a kiss on her knuckles before speaking in a somber tone. “Sua, please forgive me.”
Sua averted her eyes but she could clearly see the hurt she’d caused clearly in them. “You’re here with me now.”
“Still, I’m sorry for not returning your letters. It was selfish of me to assume that if I didn’t write back to you it wouldn’t give you a false hope in case I didn’t —”
“But you did.” Sua returned her gaze to look at her, the tenderness of it felt like a salvation to Mizi. Sua unclasped their hands and she moved closer to Mizi before cupping her face. “We’re together now and that’s all I need, Mizi.”
Sua leaned in to press a kiss on her forehead and that’s what all Mizi needed to hear for her to let go of the fears and doubts she has been hiding, she let them go along with her tears who ran freely again. Mizi let herself be comforted by Sua who in turn was busy threading her fingers in her short pink hair and playing with the fuzz of hair that touches her neck. Sua rested her chin on top of her head while her sobs were muffed by her chest.
They stayed entwined for a moment, basking in each other’s presence that they have greatly missed.
Mizi lifted her head to look at Sua and she raised her hands to wipe away the quiet tears Sua had shed. Sua has always dealt with her turmoil as silently as possible.
Sua chuckled as she smoothed out the frown that formed on her forehead. Then she wiped Mizi’s tears away again.
From there they don’t know who began talking but they spent the rest of the day catching up. And their hands stayed entwined as they spoke.
Mizi pouted. “Why weren’t you there?”
“Hmm.”
“You weren’t in the throne room.” Mizi played with Sua’s hair, admiring how soft they are and loving how the tips curl at her fingers.
A brief look of panic crossed her face but Sua brushed it off and simply said she was tired. Mizi narrowed her eyes playfully, deciding to keep her new rank a secret and just spill the other half of the surprise.
“I guess you're lucky then.” She threw the bait. Now, all she needs is for Sua to take it.
“Why?” What happened there?” Sua asked, an eyebrow raised in question.
Mizi chuckled, remembering how she got the same look a while ago.
“Ivan and Till got married.” She announced in a casual tone then she scooted backwards so she could watch Sua’s reaction fully.
It was comical.
Sua abruptly sat upright and yelled. “What?”
Mizi was laughing amidst Sua’s breakdown; she only stopped after Sua shook her too much asking her for details.
“Officially it’s a union to unite the two kingdoms, but for us family and close friends it was a union of love as Ivan poetically called it.”
Before Sua could ask, Mizi already answered it. Perfectly reading her mind as always.
“Luka proposed it.” She poke Sua’s nose because she only frowned deeper in response. “I thought he was planning to propose it to Hyuna but instead of them he requested if it’s possible the alliance could be sealed with their wedding.”
Mizi sat up too then she snaked her arms around Sua before resting her head on her shoulder.
“There now you got ammunition against Ivan.” She looked up at Sua and gave her a proud smile, silently asking to be praised for doing a good job. Sua sighed and patted her head in return.
“Wait Mizi. Why would I need ammunition against him?”
“Ivan said he’s going to gloat about getting married before you.” Mizi grumbled as she closed her eyes. “But since he didn’t see you first he can’t do that now.”
“Enough about that idiot.”
The hand gently patting her head moved to her nape to play with the hairs there. Mizi giggled as she felt ticklish due to Sua’s ministrations.
“Tell me how your hair got this short.” Sua’s voice is gentle but there is an underlying tone of authority laced in it this time.
Mizi opened her eyes and she sat up straight, deciding to answer her question without sugarcoating it. “I cut it myself.”
Sua’s eyes widened in shock, her lips pursed and she nodded for Mizi to continue.
“We were at the last stretch of the battle, everyone was desperate to see it done. An enemy soldier pulled on my hair and made me lose balance.” She briefly stopped as she recalled the events of that day. Sua grabbed her hand and rubbed her knuckles comfortingly. Mizi took a deep breath before continuing. “He was about to swing his sword at me but luckily I acted faster. I took out the dagger you gave me and cut it away so I could escape. I grabbed my sword and…”
“Ah! Sua!” Mizi exclaimed and she hurriedly stood up and went to where her armor is. When she came back she had a dagger in her hand. It was light so it was easy to carry and to wield, it had enough sharpness to pierce through flesh. It has a simple design, sleek black and silver along the edges, the only jewelry adorning it at the hilt is a bright amethyst gem. “I didn’t lose it.”
Sua smiled and she took the dagger from Mizi, playing with it at ease. It was a secret that she knew how to wield such a weapon but really she never needed to wield one, not when Mizi’s always by her side. Her knight.
She returned the dagger to Mizi who was watching her in awe. Mizi put it aside and continued her story about how her new look caused a ruckus and how Hyuna helped in making the cut even.
“Honestly, I was scared of your reaction.” Mizi lamented. “Because you loved braiding my hair and that’s my excuse to spend more time with you.”
She’s testing the waters now. Her heart skipped a beat at the grin Sua directed at her.
“You don’t need such excuses with me Mizi.”
“Still, I’d like it if I can just stay by your side always.” She entwined their fingers and brought it to her lips. Amber orbs attentively watching her reaction.
“There’s a remedy to that,” Sua mumbled then she leaned forward and pressed a kiss to their entwined fingers. Her lips almost brushed against Mizi’s own, it left her yearning for more.
“Be my princess, Mizi.”
She heard those words before. Sua asked her that before but she said no because she wants to be her knight, because she thought that was the only way she could choose to stay with her.
But what if Sua was asking her something else, what if her words have another meaning?
“Wait— Is that a command?” Mizi stuttered, her mind couldn’t keep up with the beating staccato of her heart.
Sua unclasped their hands then she stood up, she faced the balcony, watching the sun begin to set.
“Never mind that.” She shook her head. “I have a request for my knight instead.”
“Anything.” Mizi moved swiftly and kneeled before her.
“Escort me for tonight’s banquet.”
Mizi blinked. “I was about to ask you that.”
Sua stretched her hand out to her, signaling her to stand up.
Sua mumbled. “I want to keep you to myself after all.”
Mizi turned bright red and coughed. “I’m yours, Sua.”
Sua smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I’ll wait for you here, Mizi.”
It bothered her, how Sua’s mood mellowed. She promised Sua she wouldn’t take too long.
When she passed by some servants she told them to send maids to Sua’s chamber so she’ll have assistance in preparing.
Mizi took a quick stroll in the garden and found everything she had requested in place. Only then did she take off to her quarters to prepare for the banquet.
When Sua was left alone her mind replayed their conversations. She could still read Mizi’s tells and Sua knew that it’s fine to hope one more time.
Her musings were interrupted by a series of knocks and Sua knew those specific knocks were from the maids she selected herself. A faint smile found its place on her lips as she realized Mizi summoned them for her.
“Your highness, please tell us what you need.”
Her eyes gleamed mischievously before giving out specific instructions. Sua then sat on her vanity, drumming her finger on the table as she waited for them to bring out all the things she'd asked.
There was a singular knock on her door again and from her reflection in the mirror she gave her permission to the maids to let the person in.
Luka stepped inside, surprise evident in his face when he saw the maids shuffling around him bringing out various dresses, shoes, and jewelry.
He held back his laugh when he saw a familiar armor beside the chaise lounge. He was just about to point it out when Sua spoke to him.
“What title did you grant to Mizi?”
“That’s for you to find out sister.” He chided, grinning like Cheshire cat at the opportunity to cause chaos.
Sua narrowed her eyes in response, her amethyst orbs devoid of any emotion. She roughly crumpled a bunch of violet ribbons in hand.
Luka let out a tired sigh and gave in to her question. “It’s a title befitting a princess.”
He didn’t bother to call out her shock reaction. He simply left with just a reminder. “Don’t be late, sister.”
As he walked away he mumbled under his breath about twins needing assistance and his matchmaking job being a success.
With Luka’s departure her maids turned back to her, silently asking if they should proceed or would they change course of actions.
Sua thought carefully of the implications of what her older brother revealed. It’s not that she doesn’t trust Luka, him doing her a favor or giving in to her demands is usually met with him needing something in return and yet, despite past experiences Sua could tell that him helping her out this time is out of sincerity.
The hope that blossomed in her heart a few moments ago encouraged her to take another leap of faith.
“Bring out the black dress that exposes my back, and the pair of pearl earrings that I recently bought.” Sua ordered them and they began moving things again.
In the next few hours her maids did all the work and Sua worked on calming her erratic heart as she counted down the minutes until she would see Mizi again.
She heard her maids breathe a sigh of relief as they admired their handiwork. At the last minute they all made a unanimous decision that it’s better if Sua would wear her hair up instead of her usual hairstyle. They even argued about the propriety of the backless dress but they all came with the conclusion that other kingdoms have already followed this trend and what better way to start it in theirs than having their princess wear it, there were also some side comments that mentioned Mizi not letting anyone near her which Sua pointedly ignore them but did not deny it.
When they heard a knock on the door they all composed themselves and let the guest in.
Sua froze like a deer caught by a hunter.
Mizi strode inside, wearing a knight’s official uniform, adorned with a cape hanging on her shoulder that distinguished her as Sua’s personal knight. She beamed at Sua and quickened her pace to reach her then she kneeled down in front of her.
“I’m ready to escort you, your highness.” Sua didn’t simply swoon at Mizi, her heart did somersaults and it’s a miracle her outward expression remained calm.
Mizi offered her gloved hand to her and Sua placed hers on top of it. She stood and Mizi tucked her hand in her arm and together they walked to the banquet hall in comfortable silence.
They took the entrance that only royalty could use and Sua is glad that no one can hog them yet.
“Sua,” Mizi called out to her in an excited tone and she could see metaphorical ears perked up atop her head and her tail wagging. “You look so pretty.”
Sua stopped in her tracks then she turned to Mizi to adjust the crooked ribbon holding her cape. “And my knight is beautifully handsome.” Her hand glided over her chest, hovering over her heart for a moment. “Just for me.”
Mizi blushed furiously as she tucked Sua's hand in her arm again. “All for you.”
All eyes were on them when they entered the hall but no one dared approach them save for Ivan and Till who entered early. There seemed to be a universal understanding that the princess and her knight are quite taken with each other. A universal understanding that both parties have been oblivious to but no one dared to say it to their faces.
Sua congratulated Ivan and Till on their wedding and while Ivan complained about Mizi revealing the surprise on her own Sua simply informed Till that divorce is legal in their kingdom and she could help him make Ivan go broke if he’ll ever need it.
Ivan heard their one sided discussion and he whined indignantly at Sua driving a wedge between him and his two weeks old husband. Sua ignored his presence all throughout but the grin on her lips says otherwise. After tolerating Ivan’s whines for a few minutes she simply dragged Mizi away from them while mumbling under her breath that she refused to be related to that lunatic.
Mizi stayed by her side, her hand resting at the small of her back. Sua is aware that Mizi is not adhering to the proper distance to be maintained but she loves how close she is right now, a simple turn of her head would have her brushing their nose together discreetly as possible. Mizi would laugh every time she did it or would even pull her in even closer than what was allowed.
The noise died down at the announcement of Luka’s entrance, he walked solemnly and when he’s in front of everyone he gave a speech about their victory and how the kingdom recognized the bravery and sacrifice of each one of their knights. He was met with loud cheers from the knights when they heard their rewards while the stingy nobles merely clapped their hands for show.
He didn’t bother calling them out because he was eager to finish his speech, next he made Ivan and Till step forward and personally congratulated them on their wedding before announcing that their union is a symbol of their alliance with the neighboring kingdom. The news had the nobles gagged as they were not expecting this development and all the families that brought their daughters in haste of seducing even one of the princes hurriedly chased after their daughters who felt their dream was taken away from them.
Finally, Luka looked in their direction, specifically Sua’s and her empty hand. His eyes twinkled mischievously but there was also a faint genuine smile on his lips that made both Sua and Ivan shudder at the sight of it.
Luka spoke of how Mizi’s actions changed the tide in battle and ultimately gave them their victory and for that, he’s pleased to bestow upon her a new title. “I hereby grant you the title of a grand duchess.”
Everyone turned to look at Mizi, at them, because Sua refused to leave her side and she only leaned in closer to her side as Mizi bowed and thanked Luka. Mizi pressed closer against her, her hand now resting at the dip of her waist.
“Congratulations, Mizi.” She whispered and turned her head to press a light kiss to her jaw.
Mizi flinched, her ears tinged in red as she whispered her thanks to Sua, reciprocating her kiss by pressing one on her hair.
Luka wrapped up his speech and to formally start the celebrations he asked Ivan and Till to lead the dance. He sat on his throne, enjoying the festivities before him and giving instructions to his guards to block any nobles that would try to approach either Sua or Mizi. He looked at his two siblings and their respective partners and came up with a conclusion that happiness looks good on them. Just from looking at Sua he knew he’ll receive an engagement announcement tomorrow and possibly a wedding soon.
As Ivan and Till finished their dance, a new song began to play and other couples joined the newlyweds, congratulating them as they passed by each other.
Mizi straightened her posture and she outstretched her hand before bowing. “May I have this dance, your highness?”
Sua accepted coquettishly. “Why grand duchess, all of my dance cards are only filled with your name.”
They shared a laugh before gracefully joining in the pairs dancing in the hall, when they passed by the newlyweds they both shouted good luck at them while Mizi averted her gaze in shyness and panic, Sua caressed her jaw and wordlessly turned her attention back to her.
They danced a few more and before Sua could even ask for a break Mizi was already leading her away from the dance floor.
“Will you join me for a while to get some fresh air, princess?” Mizi talked in a somber tone but her eyes were quite determined and Sua trusted her so she let Mizi lead her away.
Mizi suddenly stopped in her tracks, making Sua bumped into her.
“Mizi.”
She removed the cape on her shoulder and enveloped Sua in it. The fur on it warmed up her neck immediately.
“I’m sorry I didn’t notice you were shivering.” Mizi apologized sheepishly.
“I didn’t even notice I felt cold.” Sua smiled. “All I could feel is the warmth radiating off of you, Mizi.”
“We’re almost there.” Mizi said when she turned with Sua’s hand in tow.
She already had an inkling on where they’re headed. They’ve run on the same path during their childhood after all.
Sua felt elated and she started swinging their arms together as they walked hand in hand to their secret place.
When they reached their secret place in the garden Mizi was attentively watching Sua’s reaction. A pleased smile graced her lips the moment she heard her gasp in surprise as her eyes widened and her hold on Mizi’s hand tightened.
It was a simple surprise at best, the small lamps she hung on the tree gave a soft glow of light, illuminating the small space that Mizi filled with the softest blanket for them to occupy laid out on the ground and several baskets that held their favorite foods. It’s a small celebration just for the two of them
Sua turned to look at her, awe and admiration twinkling brightly in her eyes. “Mizi.”
“All for you, princess.” Mizi mumbled.
The sight of Sua bathed in moonlight and the lamps she hung all over the tree gave her an ethereal glow and her heart skipped a beat as it dictated that right now, this moment, is the perfect time to ask her an important question.
She watched as Sua peeked inside the baskets, finding it cute at how she giggled when she saw the contents of it.
“Mizi, what are you waiting for?” Sua patted the space beside her, asking Mizi to be cozy with her.
Mizi approached her slowly and solemnly which made her brow furrowed in confusion. Once she’s settled on her side Sua took her hands in his, her frown deepening as Mizi kept on refusing to meet her gaze.
“Mizi, is something wrong?” Concern filled her voice and she tightened her grasp on Mizi’s hands as she felt them tremble.
She heard Mizi mumbling her name and it prompted her to enveloped her in an embrace. Her heart soared when Mizi reciprocated and snaked her arms around her, fingers resting at the small of her back.
They stayed like that for a moment, basking in each other’s warmth until Sua shivered involuntarily from Mizi caressing her exposed back underneath the cape draped across it. Mizi chortled at her cute reaction while Sua retaliated by nipping the soft skin where her jaw meets her neck.
Mizi yelped and she sat still, gulping nervously as Sua lifted her head, she was too close it made her nose brush against Mizi’s. Instead of backing away Sua stayed near, resting her forehead against hers as she contemplated her next move.
Should she throw caution in the breezing wind accompanying them or should she continue taking the cowardly way out, backing out at the last minute so she could preserve their friendship.
The stories she has read doesn’t compare to what she’s feeling now. The rush of having what she desired the most is right in front of her.
To love Mizi openly the way she has always intended to.
Maybe it was because they were separated for so long her longing for Mizi has intensified so much she cannot bottle it up any longer.
It was her love and the culmination of her yearning that guided her next actions.
Tenderly, she cupped Mizi’s cheeks then she pulled back a bit to gaze at her golden eyes that shone brighter than the moon and stars that shone upon them. Mizi is the sun. Her personal sun.
Sua tilted her face and leaned in a swift motion. Capturing Mizi’s lips in a sweet, chaste kiss. She lingered for a minute before pulling back to check her reaction.
Wide amber eyes met somber amethyst as Sua felt her world collapse and she was ready to accept her inevitable fall.
Sua fell.
But she was not alone.
Mizi followed her soon after.
Before she could take it back and apologize for kissing her. Mizi chased after her lips and kissed her in return. Unlike her kiss that was testing the waters Mizi was filled with desperation to keep her close, only letting her go so she could take short breaths of air before sealing their lips again and again and again.
One hand moved to her nape while the other encircled her waist and lifted her into Mizi’s lap. Mizi poured everything into her kiss. All the unspoken and hidden feelings they’ve held for each other are finally revealed under the moonlight.
“Mizi,” Sua gasped her name as Mizi moved to press her lips on her jaw. Her fingers deftly moved to push the cape off of her as she went downwards to her neck, alternating her kisses with nipping and sucking, leaving faint marks all over the exposed skin she could reach.
Sua wanted to take it further, her desires are taking over her but she wanted to make it clear first where her affection lies.
“Mizi.” There was authority in her tone and it made Mizi stop her ministrations, she stiffened and let Sua pull her face away from her chest. Sua caressed her cheeks then she wiped away the tears she spotted at the corner of her eyes before she leaned in to press a quick kiss on her lips.
“I love you.”
“I love you.”
They both said it at the same time, resolutely and with a tinge of desperation at the end.
“Sua.”
“Mizi.”
“I truly love you.”
“Will you marry me?”
Mizi suddenly asked. A weight is finally lifted off her shoulders as she finally says the words. Then it registered to her that Sua reaffirmed her love for her. “Oh! I truly love you too Sua.”
Sua repeated the words inside her head. She heard it clearly. Mizi has just asked for her hand in marriage.
While Sua was lost in her thoughts Mizi watched her fondly, waiting for her to process everything that happened while she couldn’t help but grin happily. Mizi fished out the velvet box from her pocket and opened it. Presenting a gold band that has a topaz and amethyst embedded on it. While her other hand is waiting for Sua’s.
“Mizi.” Sua placed her hand on the hand in front of her then Mizi took the ring out of the box and slid it on her finger. They both admired how perfectly it fits then Mizi took her hand and kissed it along with the ring.
“I’m sorry for making you wait so long.” Mizi said she put her thumb over Sua’s lips because she knew Sua would tell her there’s nothing to apologize for. But that wasn’t the case for Mizi when she had been aware all along that Sua regarded her as more than just a friend and her knight.
Mizi reminisced the first time Sua asked her to be her princess. How she regretted saying no and the hurt she felt when Sua masked her own hurt with a smile. It was the first time Sua felt distant to her and she never wanted that to happen again.
“Princesses in the books we’ve read never got together with other princesses so I thought by being your knight I could stay by your side forever.” Mizi played with the ring on her finger as she spoke. “But being your knight wasn’t enough for me. Hearing those nobles talk about courting you and marrying you made me mad.”
Mizi pursed her lips as she remembered the unpleasant feeling the simple thought of someone standing by Sua’s side brought her.
Mizi was startled when Sua kissed her again then she moved to kiss her brows that were furrowed before proceeding to kiss her face all over. “W-Wait Sua…” Mizi felt heat rising to her cheeks as Sua continued to kiss her everywhere. When she felt Sua trying to unbutton her uniform her hands immediately shot up to hold hers and cried. “We’re moving too fast!”
Sua raised an eyebrow at her and dragged her hand to her neck guiding it with hers as Mizi’s fingers brushed against the bruises that were starting to form there. “Says my wife who has already marked me.”
Sua had a devious smile as Mizi stuttered and turned redder beneath her; she took advantage of her momentary shock to straddle her instead.
“Mizi, marrying you has always been my intention every time I asked you to be my princess.” It felt liberating to finally admit that out in the open and Sua enjoyed the way her ears turned red and she laughed as Mizi hid her face in her chest.
Her voice was muffled when she asked a question but Sua understood it. “Yes, Mizi, I will marry you.”
Mizi lifted her head and when she noticed the position they were in her eyes darted from Sua and to her lap which only made the princess smile more deviously. “Sua, you called me your wife.”
“Mhm. I did.” Sua grinded against her. She couldn’t help the whine that escaped her when Mizi grabbed her hips to keep her in place.
Mizi looked at her hungrily as if she would devour her at any moment. She was breathing heavily as her fingers fiddled with the hem of her dress, amber eyes glazed with desire. “Sua, may I?”
Sua answered her with a searing, deep kiss unlike the ones they’ve shared before. This one is fueled by the unbridled heat that has been building up between them. She parted her lips open as soon as Mizi’s tongue flicked over her lower lip, taking her in and twining their tongues together. Her hands found themselves back to the buttons of Mizi’s uniform, this time she was successful in unbuttoning them, she quickly shrugged it off, compelling Mizi to pull away slightly from her to take it off before helping her unbutton the shirt she was wearing inside.
Mizi took it off swiftly while Sua had her eyes glued to her breast, watching in fascination as her nipples perked up partly due to the cold air and the arousal that had been building up inside of her. She hissed in pleasure as they had come in contact with Sua’s cool palms as she kneaded them for a moment. Mizi responded by cupping Sua’s breast, her fingers pinched and rolled her nipples over her dress. Emboldened by the moans and gasps Sua lets out Mizi hooked her fingers over her dress, pulling it slightly downwards, slowly Sua’s mounds revealed themselves and she wasted no time in taking one into her mouth while she occupied the other with the same ministrations she has been doing when it was clothed.
Sua bit her knuckles to stifle her moans, while Mizi was busy with her breasts Sua was free to continue the grinding she was doing earlier when she was enticing Mizi. She started slow to match the pace of the gentle pleasure Mizi is giving her but as she got nearer to reaching her peak she began grinding faster and rougher. She belatedly realized that Mizi has moved her hands to her hips, fingers digging on the soft skin so hard she’s sure it would leave her bruising as she helped Sua quicken her pace.
“Let go, Sua.” Mizi whispered in a low tone before biting her ear then she tugged it gently as Sua came with a shout, eyes rolling to the back of her head as waves of pleasure made her tremble all over.
Mizi kissed her cheeks as she recovered in her arms, she could hear clothes rustling behind her as she pressed her face against Mizi’s neck. When she had rested enough she began placing kisses on her neck, alternating it with nipping and sucking, leaving faint marks in her wake. She trailed her lips near Mizi’s ear. “I want more, Mizi.”
Mizi wordlessly maneuvered Sua out of her lap and laid her down gently on the pile she made out of her coat and several thin blankets. Then she parted Sua’s legs, occupying the space between them as she bunched the dress upwards to her waist.
“Mizi, what—”
“Let me love you more, Sua.” Mizi uttered huskily before she dived downwards. She nuzzled the soft flesh of Sua’s thigh before littering it with marks from sucking and nipping while Sua’s hand shot up towards her, fingers tugging on her hair, silently begging her to give attention to her cunt. Instead of giving in to Sua’s plea Mizi chose to give her other thigh the same attention she gave the other. But when Sua started canting her hips to her face Mizi sighed happily before moving her head to where Sua wants her to be.
Sua trembled before her and every little thing Mizi does brings back the need to chase after the pleasure she felt earlier. So when Mizi inhaled deeply it made her gasp in anticipation of what's about to happen as she had fantasized about Mizi using her mouth on her far too many times during the lonely nights of their separation.
Mizi gave tentative licks to her folds, she was fighting back the urge to lose herself in pleasure as she drowns in Sua’s scent and the juices that keep on flowing out of her fluttering folds of her cunt. She felt Sua’s nails digging in her scalp as the princess pushed her head closer and canted her hips upwards to meet her. She smiled as she paused her ministrations, listening to the whines that Sua let out along with her pleas.
Mizi lifted her head and moved upwards, hugging Sua and giggling at the indignant expression on her face but still returning her kisses, with an additional bite to her lower lip that she soothed with her tongue right after.
“Tell me what you want.” Sua shivered against her as Mizi’s thumb brushed against her clit, her fingers parting her folds before slowly dipping inside her. “My princess, my wife.” She kissed her cheek and started to pump her fingers in and out.
“My god.” Her fingers curled and Sua moaned loudly in response.
“My universe.” Sua began to move her hips to the rhythm of her fingers. She changed her pace and moved faster, in and out then she would curl them suddenly so she could hit her sensitive spots.
“My Sua.” Mizi pressed the pad of her thumb on her clit as she curled her fingers inside. Her walls fluttered and squeezed the fingers inside her as she let out a scream when the combined pleasure she received from her ministrations pushed her to the brink of pleasure.
Mizi slowed down her pace and helped Sua ride out her orgasm then she pulled her fingers out to bring it to her mouth, sucking and licking the juices that coated her hand. She made sure Sua was watching her do all that.
Then she went down again and without any warning she plunged her tongue inside her cunt, Sua unconsciously wrapped her legs around her neck and it only pushed Mizi further inside as her nose dug into her clit. Sua was sensitive from cumming and she hasn’t come down from her high yet and the suddenness of Mizi eating her out brought her to come again. But instead of stopping Mizi only continued, her pace was faster and rougher, she had no intention of stopping as she sucked, licked, and gulped down the juices that secreted from her cunt.
Sua could only scream as she lost herself more in pleasure, she couldn’t keep count on how many times she had come and when an orgasm would start and end. All she could feel was the never ending waves of pleasure that crashed through her with every touch that came from Mizi.
Sua lost track of time and of her senses as hoarse cries of Mizi’s name turned to mumbles in between gasps of breath. As her trembling body slowed its shaking Mizi held her in her arms, kissing her every now and then as she praised Sua for holding on until the end, followed by countless whispers of affection, of her love and devotion to Sua.
Sua’s thoughts were jumbled but she managed to respond to Mizi by nuzzling against her and patting her head as she hoarsely replied. “I love you, Mizi.”
“Mhm,” Mizi kissed her lips, their mouths languidly moving together as they basked in the afterglow. “I love you, Sua.”
When they parted, Sua’s amethyst eyes twinkled mischievously. “Mizi, you can be rougher with me.”
Mizi blushed furiously.
Sua raised her eyebrow as she teased her. “Don’t act innocent as if you didn’t shove your tongue with precision and made a mess out of me.”
Before she could try to defend herself her stomach growled and Mizi decided that hiding her embarrassed face in Sua’s chest is the best course of action.
Sua’s laugh echoed in the open space and Mizi turned redder as the realization sank in that prior to this tender moment they shared Sua’s cries of pleasure enveloped them.
Mizi hesitantly lifted her head and found Sua already looking at her. She always had. Mizi puts on the best puppy eyed look she could do and she cheered when she saw Sua’s lips quiver into a smile.
“Alright, we’ll eat first.” Sua acquiesced but the mischievous twinkle was still there as she pouted. “I never thought this is how I’ll find out that I can’t satisfy you, Mizi.”
Sua straddled Mizi and captured her lips in a searing kiss before the latter could launch a full scale explanation to rebuff Sua’s claim.
“Mizi. You’re my eternal love.”
