Work Text:
A small hum came from the design studio as the hunched Maijima scratched off the incorrect answers on the yellow sheet of paper Infront of him, quickly noting down a few things on his own notes. And then a few suggestions on the slip for the student to look over. He shifted to the next paper, his pen skipping around the sheet clicking his tongue, calculating the math internally before jotting the red ink onto the paper, flipping it around to continue the corrections on the other side.
His humming came to a halt when two slender fingers tapped his shoulder, retreating quickly as Maijima turned his head, meeting the intruder with a confused expression. Hizashi stood with his hands clasped behind his back, hunched down as he peered at the others work then to the man himself as he swayed. His hair was gelled up like a cockatoo’s feathered head. His orange tinted glasses were stooped low on his nose, psychedelic eyes no longer hidden behind the loud glasses.
Maijimas browed furrowed, before one cocked up with inquisitive look at the oddly silent man. “How did I not hear ya’ come in Hizashi? Where's those excessive vocals that leave me deaf?” he quickly questioned, a sharp note at the end. His eyes that were hidden behind his thick bangs, glanced back down to quickly finish up marking up the current paper before focusing their gaze back at the man.
“A-ahem” He cleared his throat, his voice scratched and forced as he quickly patted his chest as if to help.
“Can’t uh’ really talk much right now,” His voice was barely above a whisper, each word coming out with a high-pitched squeak, the syllables sounding raspy with pain.
“Blew out my vocal cord’s last night,” He coughed, hitting his fist against his chest again.
“Ain’t gonna’,” he paused, giving a break between his lines,“ have a voice for a bit” he finished, clearing his throat yet again before he gave a pathetic smile.
“Ah, didn’t think that was possible,” The ginger nodded, having a bit of pity for the other. Though enjoying the lowered volume.
“Me neither,” he squeaked. Before revealing the other hand that was still hidden behind him, holding a busted-up speaker, quickly recognized as the one that usually clasped around his neck. “Busted this too, think you can quickly repair it?” he questioned in a whisper, nudging it closer to the other.
taking the mangled speaker from the Hizashi’s slender hands and to his own he quickly inspected the busted-up equipment. His steal claw rummaged into a gaping crack,
fragments of metal inside the cage jotting around, wires were disconnected, frayed at the ends freed from their matching components. Though the disk and boards inside seemed intact with a closer inspection, with only a few connections needed for repair. And a singular chip needing to be replaced, an obvious fracture ripping it apart. Maijima continues his hum as he discovered each and every little disrepair.
“I can do this pretty quickly, just take a seat, right . . ” Maijima took a break from his subconscious tunes, now looking for a seat, his head whipping around scanning the room before glancing behind Mic, quickly reaching his arm behind him yanking a chair from the adjacent table," 'Uh right here,”
“Thanks,” the gratitude came out as a small wheeze as Hizashi sat down, shimmying to get comfortable before scooching the chair closer to the mechanic. His eyes wandered across the desk watching how Maijima diligently worked with the equipment. Even with hands that dwarfed himself he skillfully used his tools to make up the agility and precision. Each repair taking less time than the one before as Maijima got into the rhythm.
Mic made an attempt to hum a small tune, replacing the one that no longer feel from Maejima's lips, it was fairly quiet, the octaves not quite right but not quite wrong as he sang it. When he hums it becomes loud, obnoxious, and annoying. It can’t this time, even if the other was aware of his way of making others tired of his presence, or even enjoyed it, he couldn’t now. So, his little hums, confusingly calming, gained a small smile. It was a falter, a little subconscious thing but it was there plastered on maijima’s face. Maijimas movements while still skilled and effective in finishing the task became calmer. His shoulders lowered, his muscles no longer tense like before, with the grading, the hero work, the upcoming meetings, it calmed him.
It was no time before the device was good as new, except for the remaining scar of welding where the crack had disrupted the equipment. “Need anything else Hizashi?” taking it from the desk he swerved to the man, handing it back. Hizashi juggled the speaker in his hands for a good minute, inspecting the weld. Raising it high fo meet his gaze before lowering it as his fingers nimbly clasped it on, his index fiddling with the settings.
“testing, testing?” His voice, small and squeaky now magnified to an appropriate volume, easily recognizable but still pained. Hizashi grinned, showing off both his hands gestured into proud and loud thumbs up in approval.
“Right then, I have to get back to grading, “before he can finish the blonde was already hopping up, rushing out of the room, his hand reached behind his neck adjusting was Maijima presumed to be the volume as the bellowing loud “YEAH” bounced off the walls. Maijima was glad that the metal doors that blocked off this design studio easily sound proofed the room from the further commotion.
