Chapter Text
Agatha hated nosy people.
Coming from her that sounded ironic but she had a reason for being nosy at least.
It was the principle of things really. Being a detective meant absorbing any and all available information, meaning you wouldn't believe the amount of cases she'd solved just by listening to people talk for too long about things that definitely shouldn't have been said out loud.
So yes, Agatha was perfectly fine with gossiping when it involved anyone other than her, which was why none of her coworkers had any idea who she was married to.
She was lucky enough that her wife worked a separate job, completely differentiated from the state police Agatha was affiliated with, though Rio would still find the similarity of their professions hilarious. Apparently, detective and FBI agent weren't that far off from each other.
Rio didn't share her particular qualms, however, having absolutely no issue with letting her coworkers know exactly who she was married to. And while initially Agatha hadn't been sure about that decision, considering the information of their marriage and the literal child they had together somehow still hadn't reached her job, Agatha was content to let Rio take the reins on how she wanted to handle her side of the equation.
It wasn't like Rio was unaware of Agatha's preference either, she had made sure to tell Rio that she had no interest in having her private life talked about at work of all places and Rio had only shrugged and told her that it was fine by her before informing Agatha that it still wouldn't get her out of picking Nicholas up after work during the week.
Her wife had her priorities, and clearly infringing on Agatha's comfort wasn't one of them.
No, truth be told Rio had been more than accommodating with Agatha's asks, and even after ten years there had yet to be a time where her choice caused some type of issue.
Agatha was comfortable with the arrangement, anything to avoid people talking about her behind her back and it did allow her a few years of peace while her coworkers remained in blissful ignorance.
Which was why one day when Agatha walked out of her office and immediately saw Rio standing in the middle of the station without any prior warning having been given to prepare her, she may or may not have reacted more aggressively than she should have.
"What are you doing here?" Agatha asked, barely giving Rio the time to even turn to look at her.
Rio raised a brow at her, an easy grin spreading across her face as she held her hand out. Funny that now of all times she was deciding to be polite. "Detective Harkness. Sorry for the intrusion but the bureau is gonna be shadowing this investigation for the time being."
Agatha tried to control the furrow of her brow, awkwardly shaking her own wife's hand as if they hadn't woken up in bed together three hours prior, as if the rings they'd given each other weren't literally still on their fingers. "That doesn't tell me why you're here or why the bureau felt that was necessary, Vidal." Agatha hissed, keeping her voice low.
It seemed their exchange hadn't been missed, suddenly Agatha was very aware of the whispers and confused conversations happening around them. Rio must have noticed them as well because she immediately let go of Agatha's hand and turned towards the array of confused detectives scattered around them. “Oh don’t mind me, fellas, I’m just here to follow you on this case until it has a solid jurisdiction then I’ll be out of your hair. Right, detective?” Rio added, making sure Agatha knew that the last part of her sentence was clearly directed toward her.
God how that woman infuriated her sometimes.
And unfortunately, Agatha was well aware that it was also one of the main things that had drawn her to Rio in the first place. A quality that she couldn’t help but love and Rio was well aware of that, although Agatha doubted there would have been any chance of Rio restraining herself from taunting her even if she so happened to dislike it.
Agatha ran her tongue over her teeth in an attempt to focus on anything besides the look Rio was giving her, eventually ducking her head downward with a sigh before addressing the room. "You heard Agent Vidal, don't let this disrupt anything, get back to work. And can someone please get the autopsy reports I requested? I needed them yesterday."
Rio glanced around as most of the attention they had garnered turned away from them, she didn't make any move to walk away though, and while Agatha usually found Rio's tendency to try and cause other people discomfort amusing she was still at work and wasn't exactly in a position to enjoy her wife's usual quirks.
Clearing her throat, Agatha waited for Rio's eyes to turn back to her before speaking. "Do you need anything else?"
"Hmm." Rio hummed, expression suddenly shifting as she fiddled with the badge around her neck. "Yes actually, if you could have someone send me the copies of the initial report that would be great. I was supposed to get the briefing here but-"
"Ed is out on leave, he was supposed to do it." Agatha groaned, great that was going to waste some valuable time. "We should have everything filed, I'll have someone take you to the records room in a second just ask for the latest John Doe and everything should be there."
Rio nodded gravelly, and while yes Agatha knew that Rio had gotten her job because she was capable of taking it seriously it was still shocking to see her wife fall into her role so easily despite such a scenario being a prime opportunity for her to tease Agatha mercilessly.
Agatha called for one of her coworkers to escort Rio to the records room, offering her a nod before turning heel and making a beeline toward one of the far corners of the station where she knew a coffee maker was present.
Her plan was quickly deviated, however, when she heard footsteps following her, immediately prompting her to turn around and come face to face with a familiar pair of eyes.
"So," Alice spoke up, somehow refusing to back down despite the glower Agatha had on. Damn, maybe she was losing her touch. "You two know each other?" She asked, vaguely gesturing back towards where Rio had been led off.
Waving her hand dismissively, Agatha shrugged. "You could say that."
Alice leveled Agatha with a look that made it very clear that she wasn't buying it. "Okay well, just so you know there's a very obvious vibe and I don't want to make any assumptions but I would clear things up if I were you."
"Yes, so that you have more gossip material to spread around maybe?"
"Well, now that you mention it..." Alice trailed off, looking around at their coworkers who Agatha swore she had never seen look this entranced in whatever files they were reading.
Sighing in exasperation, Agatha began stalking off towards her office, keenly aware of Alice following after her. "You know I miss your rookie days when you were too afraid to talk back to me."
Alice chuckled, somehow still managing to keep up with Agatha's strides despite her shorter legs. "That was years ago-"
"Yes and since we're clear on you not being a newbie then I expect you to get back to work with the efficiency I would expect of a seasoned detective right?" Agatha shot back with only partial seriousness, something that Alice picked up on.
"Loud and clear, I'll get back to it."
Agatha barely spared her another nod before stepping into her office with her head held high. It was the principle of things really, she couldn't let anyone know how much seeing Rio here had destabilized her even if she had every right to be.
Falling back into the swivel chair at her desk, Agatha allowed herself a moment of respite as she leaned her head back, sighing loudly.
She gave herself a minute to relax before sitting up again, immediately reaching for the stack of files at her desk and raising a brow when she realized that it was the autopsy report she had asked for.
Good to know her team could still work fast when she needed them to.
The sound of someone entering her office pulled Agatha's attention from the files for a second, and looking up Agatha couldn't help smiling when she noticed Rio already shutting the door behind her, a stack of files held securely in her arm.
"Hey."
Rio returned her smile, setting her files on Agatha's desk as she approached. "Fancy seeing you here Harkness, thought I'd have to wait until 9 to see you again."
Agatha rolled her eyes, sitting up in her chair as Rio leaned against her desk. "You say that as if you didn't just get off a two-week leave."
"Can't I miss my wife anyway?" Rio pouted, reaching out to run a hand over Agatha's thigh but she smacked the hand away before it could make contact.
"Rio! We're at work!"
Rio sighed indignantly, leaning back with a petulant flair that Agatha swore she'd seen their son recreate several times over the years. "Technically we're at your work. And you're still my wife in here sweetheart, I don't see how that changes anything?"
Agatha raised a brow, gesturing behind Rio. "The blinds are open. And I don't know about you but I don't need anyone besides us getting an eyeful of whatever you're planning to do."
"Pussy."
"Did you go through the files already?" Agatha deflected, trying to ignore the shine of Rio's canines as she grinned. "I'd like to get the body ID'd sooner rather than later."
Rio, mercifully, leaned away from Agatha, instead crossing her arms as she hummed in thought. "I skimmed through it, based on what I saw our guy is from out of state."
Agatha pursed her lips, already keenly aware of that fact which was the entire reason why Rio was there in the first place. "The license plate is from California but that doesn't mean he is, the car could have been stolen-"
"You're pulling at strings here Agatha." Rio cut in, gesturing towards the autopsy report. "Did they find anything else on the body that would confirm who he is?"
Handing the report to Rio for her to look through, Agatha leaned back in her seat with a frown. "So far no, all we have is details on how he died but not his identity-"
"Did you have them go through the car? If it's his there's gotta be a title somewhere in there with his name. He was estimated to be in his thirties right?"
"Yeah, I haven't gotten a report back though." Agatha sighed, eyes shifting towards the front of Rio's slacks as she stood up straighter, something that thankfully didn't go noticed before she had the time to drag her eyes back up. "We're short-staffed so it's taking longer but it should be done by tomorrow."
A sudden knock pulled Agatha's attention away from Rio, forcing her expression to seem as neutral as possible before calling. "What?"
"Hey, Sarge." One of the other detectives, Blake, poked his head into the office, gesturing outside. "Chief wants all of us to go over the autopsy report just so that we're all on the same page." Chancing a glance at Rio, he added. "Agent Vidal's presence was requested too."
"Lovely." Rio drawled, looking back at Agatha with a grin. "See you in a minute then, Detective."
Agatha made sure to keep her eyes solely on Rio's back as she left, allowing herself a sigh before she too got up and followed Rio out. Blake threw her a confused look but Agatha ignored it as she walked past him, not in the mood to entertain any questions when Rio was still very much present.
Contrary to what she usually did Agatha made sure to stand at one of the far corners of the room during their briefing, a decision that she congratulated herself on when Rio immediately sidled up to her halfway through the report.
"So, any ideas?" She asked, leaning back against the wall as she crossed her arms.
Agatha pulled her attention away from whatever was being said to focus on Rio, unconsciously leaning towards her. "You're gonna have to be more specific about what exactly you're talking about Agent Vidal."
Rio scoffed at the title, trying and failing to stifle the grin it pulled from her. "Don't act coy now Agatha, I'm talking about the case."
"Autopsy report sure makes it seem like our John Doe could have been dropped off at the location we found him in after his death instead of before." Agatha shrugged, glancing at Rio for her input.
“So what? He was moved into someone else's car even though a significant amount of blood was found in the backseat? And with no physical evidence of anyone else having been in the car? That’s the best you’ve got?” Rio teased, voice thankfully remaining low enough that only Agatha could hear her lest she be ridiculed in front of her coworkers.
Somehow Rio had more tact than that.
Glowering at Rio, Agatha lowered her voice when she responded. “Shut up.”
Rio only grinned before retorting. “You shut up.”
Agatha was distinctly aware of people starting to turn their attention towards them, no doubt noticing the avid back and forth they were having even if they couldn’t hear anything. Not that it stopped her from jabbing back at Rio with a mocking; “Make me.”
For once Rio didn’t immediately respond, instead pressing her tongue against the inside of her cheek in a way that Agatha knew was meant to be provocative and not a means to stop herself from answering. Agatha would never admit it out loud but her eyes immediately followed the motion, causing heat to course through her veins.
Rio noticed her look, of course she did, as she grinned and leaned forward, annoyingly going out of her way to not touch Agatha as she purred against her ear. “Are you sure about that, sweetheart? I don’t know if it would be appropriate to shut you up the way I’d like to in front of your subordinates. Who knows what it would do to your image.”
It took all of Agatha's strength not to bite at Rio's lips in retaliation.
Rio must have noticed her unfocused stare though, raising a brow when Agatha managed to pull her eyes back up to meet her gaze. "Let's focus on the case Agent Vidal."
"Right, right." Rio drawled, taking a second to glare at anyone who was still watching them. "So that's the theory you're going with?"
Agatha shrugged. "For now, there isn't enough evidence for anything solid but we need to start somewhere." Rubbing her forehead tiredly, she sighed. “I don’t need to break my winning streak by not solving this case.”
“Aww.” Rio mocked, a sound that Agatha was more than used to but unfortunately the same could not be said for her coworkers, two of which immediately looked between Agatha and Rio in alarm. “Well I would if I could but I don’t think reshaping the fabric of reality for you is viable right now so you might need to take the loss here, Detective.”
Agatha chuckled, momentarily forgetting that they were at work as she brought a hand to her chest and pouted at Rio. “You would do that for me?”
Rio raised a brow teasingly, no doubt about to say something that would clue anyone around them into exactly what type of relationship they had but her boss beat her to it, loudly clapping his hands together and directing them back outside except for five people who Agatha assumed were going to be tasked with interviewing any witnesses.
Looking back, Agatha saw Rio turning towards her expectantly and was about to tell her that she couldn't accompany her back to her office since she wanted to actually get some work done but evidently, she didn't need to say anything as Rio was called back as well.
Rio threw a wave over her shoulder before focusing her attention back on Agatha and nodding towards the door. "I guess that's my cue, good luck with your case Detective."
Agatha didn't miss the wink Rio threw her way, meeting it with a raised brow which Rio seemed to take in strides as she gave Agatha a last lingering look, walking back over to where she had been called.
That was all the prompting Agatha needed to turn tail and make a beeline for her office.
And granted, maybe her coworkers had seen her and Rio's weird back and forth but at least there wouldn't be any more fuel added to the fire today.
Small victories but at least she dodged that bullet.
“You’re disrupting my job.”
Those were the first words out of Agatha's mouth as soon as Nicholas ran upstairs, leaving herself and Rio alone in the kitchen.
Rio hummed in acknowledgment, already offering Agatha more attention than she had initially expected. “I didn’t hear you complaining at the time, did I?” Rio answered back, aggressively chewing at the orange in her hand.
Agatha rolled her eyes at Rio’s deflection. “That’s because at least one of us has to stay professional hun, and it’s clearly not you.”
“Well, where’s the fun in that? And anyway, I was assigned to help you it’s not like I’m infringing on your territory.”
“Then what exactly would you call inserting yourself into my case without even bothering to tell me beforehand? Need I remind you that we sleep in the same bed? You couldn't have warned me this morning?”
Rio chewed quietly, eyes glancing down at the counter before shrugging, and for a moment Agatha wondered if Rio was going to fully ignore her when her wife finally turned her gaze back towards her.
Instead of acknowledging any of Agatha's questions, Rio raised a hand and tugged the collar of her shirt down to show off a fading bruise on her collarbone. One that Agatha was fully aware of causing just a few nights ago. “Well, I remember someone deciding to mark me as their property so by default I can’t be infringing on your territory if I’m part of the territory in question.”
Agatha forced down a smile, ignoring the note of pride she felt at seeing that Rio had done nothing to even try and hide the mark she had left on her. Not that it could be seen anyway, even with the fact that Rio refused to fully button her shirt up at work. If anything the idea of it slipping and someone noticing made Agatha feel something akin to gratification.
Wait no.
Shaking that thought off, Agatha reminded herself that even if the image of something like that happening would be very amusing (and satisfying), she needed to keep some kind of professionalism regardless of any deeper desires she may have.
"Just try and keep things at work level." Agatha settled on.
Rio begrudgingly nodded, sticking her tongue out at Agatha which prompted her to roll her eyes and reach out to wipe at the corner of Rio's mouth, catching the remains of orange pulp that had somehow escaped. "Can't you eat properly? I swear Nicholas is somehow less messy than you."
Rio teasingly snapped her teeth at Agatha's thumb, shrugging coyly. "Where do you think he gets it from darling?"
"That's not how genetics works."
"Wanna bet?"
Agatha huffed out a laugh, drawing her hand back as she waved Rio's question off. "Just try and stay professional at work for the next week, that's all I ask." Agatha had been about to turn away when another one of her concerns came to mind. "Also, stop swearing in front of Nicky. I got a call from his school telling me that he called his teacher a cunt and I really don’t want to have to spend an hour talking to the corrections lady again just because you find it funny to joke about her divorce.”
Agatha heard Rio let out a surprised cackle at the news, pressing her hands against the counter as she bent over, laughing.
“Rio, I’m serious.”
“Okay, and?” Rio snickered, fully leaning against the counter. “That’s fucking hilarious. And don’t blame the corrections lady shit on me, I distinctly remember someone laughing with me when I said her husband dodged a bullet by dipping out early.”
“Not the point.”
“Right, right, sure. Espera un segundo.” Rio rolled her eyes, leaning against the banister near the stairs and shouting. “Hey Nicky! Which teacher did you call a bad word?”
“Mrs Kale!”
“See?” Rio looked back at Agatha triumphantly. “If it wasn’t for your stupid feud with Jen he wouldn’t know that calling her a cunt is fair game.”
Agatha leveled her wife with an unimpressed stare. “And if you didn’t swear in front of him he wouldn’t know to call people that.”
“Eh, you win some you lose most.” Rio shrugged. "Speaking of stupid feud are you ever gonna let that go?"
Agatha frowned. "Let what go?"
"The Jen thing?" Rio scoffed, leaning her head against her palm. "It's been ages and hey don't get me wrong I love a good insult toss from time to time but it's gotten so boring."
"Uh huh." Agatha nodded, raising a brow in amusement. "I'm so sorry that my personal grievances with the snake oil princess are not entertaining enough for you."
Rio hummed. "Yes, awfully neglectful of you to leave your wife bored out of her mind while you wage war against some lady all because she hit on me exactly twice before she even knew we were married."
"Now you're remembering things wrong because she definitely hit on you after she saw the ring on your finger."
"So you agree it's because she flirted with me?
"Who said it was because she flirted with you?"
Rio rolled her eyes, pushing off the counter to step over towards Agatha. "Agatha, I love you but you're awful at hiding your jealousy."
Agatha narrowed her eyes, fully prepared to turn around and start listing off every time Rio had nearly threatened to stab someone for simply looking at Agatha too long but the feeling of arms wrapping around her cut that particular thought off.
"Not that you have to worry of course." Rio purred, leaning her chin against Agatha's shoulder. "Unfortunately for Jennifer, I'm a happily taken woman." Agatha couldn't help the bolt of satisfaction that shot up her spine, prompting her to turn around in Rio's arms and place her own on her hips. Rio had no qualms with looking Agatha up and down, eyes lingering on the sliver of pale skin exposed through the opening of her shirt collar.
Rio eventually dragged her eyes back up to meet Agatha's, pupils suddenly blown wider than they had been previously and while Agatha would love nothing more than to take her upstairs the house was unfortunately not empty at the moment so that plan quickly went out the door.
Agatha hummed, leaning forward to press a gentle kiss against Rio's lips and pulling away with a smirk. "While you're still wrong because there are many other reasons for me to hate Jen besides the whole flirting thing, I'm glad to know that your review of our marriage still sits at five stars after all these years."
"It's a very important metric Agatha." Rio teased, forcing on a diplomatic nod. "Happy wife, happy life you know?
"Guess I'll have to check in on that metric more often then."
"Yeah. I mean it would be higher if you bothered to tell your little subordinates who exactly put that ring on your finger," Rio grumbled, something that immediately clued Agatha into what this was all about.
Honestly, this was pretty typical of Rio. Bantering and skating around the point she was trying to make until it either hit Agatha or Rio lost her patience and said whatever she meant bluntly. More often than not the latter occurred.
"Rio we talked about this-"
"Yeah, yeah I know." Rio sighed, pulling away from Agatha. "Don't bring personal shit into the workplace but come on. My whole team knows we're married why can't yours know?"
Agatha glanced down guiltily, admittedly she did understand why Rio felt like the situation was unfair, she'd never been one to hide parts of herself and frankly, Agatha was surprised she had even agreed to her demands about keeping their marriage a secret from Agatha's coworkers. Regardless, while Agatha would rather not have people know about her private life she wasn't willing to keep that up if it really bothered Rio that much.
"Rio," Agatha called, reaching out to delicately hold onto her wife's elbow, and upon getting no response she tried again. "Love? Can you look at me for a second?"
Rio reluctantly met Agatha's gaze, brows raised expectantly though Agatha didn't miss the way she leaned into her touch. "Yeah?"
Agatha squeezed Rio's elbow in an attempt at comfort and sighed. "Look I'm sorry for putting you in this position, I know it's not ideal and it can feel stifling-"
"Yeah, no shit."
Agatha barely reacted to Rio's mumbled comment and carried on. "I hope you know that I'm not doing this to keep you hidden. I just know my coworkers and I swear these people never shut up so the less they know about me the better."
"Oh, I know that." Rio drawled. "If the issue was you being ashamed of me, well...You're already one kid and a house in so if that was the issue you'd be a little too late in doing anything about it."
"Well, as you love to remind the corrections lady, divorce does exist."
"Try and divorce me and I will stab you."
"Hilarious but no I have no plans on divorcing you any time soon." Agatha teased, playfully squeezing Rio's face between her fingers. "Unfortunately I've grown fond of seeing your face over the last decade and I'd like to keep it around a little longer."
Rio huffed, shaking her head out of Agatha's hold though she didn't make any actual move to pull away. "Consider this your penance for wooing the weird girl."
"To be fair you made it very hard not to." Agatha chuckled, tucking a strand of hair behind Rio's ear as her face turned serious. "But I'm glad you understand the position I'm in at work. Though now they think we're enemies or something...I'm sorry you got dragged into this."
"Well, I guess you still wear your ring at work so that counts for something." Rio relented, lolling her head back before straightening her shoulders and shrugging. "Fine, I'll refrain from giving your coworkers information they can hound you with then."
Agatha nodded gratefully, leaning forward to kiss Rio. "Thank you."
And that should have been the end of it but Rio apparently had other plans.
“If that’s off the table then can I get you stuff?”
“Rio-“ Agatha began, speech immediately halted by Rio pressing a finger against her lips.
“No, no, hear me out.” And for some reason Agatha did, nodding her assent to Rio who took the permission in strides. “You want people to stop thinking that we’re mortal enemies, right? Well, what better way to do that than by me giving you gifts? Just friendly congratulations from one agent to another.”
Agatha narrowed her eyes, thinking the suggestion over. It didn’t sound horrible, but then again Agatha didn’t trust that Rio was going to keep it at that. “…No huge gestures then.”
“Oh come on-“
“That’s my limit, it’s either that or nothing.”
Rio groaned loudly, throwing her hands up in annoyance. A tantrum that Agatha watched with mild amusement, knowing full well that Rio was only bidding her time to try and get her to change her mind. Something that wasn’t going to happen regardless.
Eventually, Rio must have realized that her whining was getting her nowhere and she relented. "Fine, whatever."
Agatha had no qualms with hiding the smugness in her smile as she leaned forward to kiss Rio. "Glad we could come to an understanding, hun."
Rio rolled her eyes but didn't move to avoid the kiss, only mumbling expletives in Spanish under her breath as she went to throw the peel of her now-finished orange in the trash. And Agatha was content to just watch her wife stew over her loss.
At least she had salvaged herself from anything more embarrassing happening.
The next day Rio showed up to her office with a rose.
It took Agatha less than three seconds to do something about it.
Stalking over, Agatha grabbed Rio by the wrist and immediately began tugging her away right in the middle of the station, almost as if she were an unruly child, and to be fair Rio's demeanor wasn't that far off to begin with. “You are so fucking-“
“Ah, ah, ah.” Rio teased, happily letting herself be tugged along as she occasionally grinned at anyone who saw it fit to gawk at the scene in front of them in disbelief. “Don’t want your colleagues hearing their beloved boss lose her composure right?”
Agatha pursed her lips, pausing in her momentum to throw a glance around the office to check that yes, they were being watched, before wordlessly tightening her hold on Rio's wrist and pulling her into her office.
Shutting the door behind them, thankful that for once the blinds had been closed beforehand, Agatha whirled on Rio. "What part of 'no big gestures' didn't you understand?"
Rio narrowed her eyes at Agatha, clearly about to throw something back but Agatha cut her off. "This isn't about them knowing about us, at this point I don't give a shit but do you have to be so..." Agatha's hands fumbled in an attempt to find the right words she wanted to use. Rio seemed content to let Agatha scramble for something to say, placing the rose on Agatha's desk and making no move to rush her as her eyes flew around the office.
Under normal circumstances, Agatha would have hated being so obviously overlooked but she knew Rio was most likely just doing it to get under her skin, and honestly, she'd rather not have eyes on her right now.
Stilling her hands, Agatha gave up on trying to mince her words. "I'd rather you not do things to embarrass me while I'm at work."
"Oh?" Rio snickered, thankfully looking more amused than offended. "Don't want your tough guy routine to be offset by the fact that your wife brings you flowers?"
Agatha refused to admit that was the case.
Rolling her eyes, Agatha crossed her arms and shrugged. "It's not about that, I just didn't think you'd want others to see my reaction to a gift, is all. I mean, aren't you the one who says you don't want anyone else to see me the same way you get to see me?"
It was a reach, a large one because while yes Rio had a very apparent possessive streak and it had yet to go away even after being married for over a decade she also liked making Agatha squirm whether that be in public or in private. Granted there were levels to it but still.
Thankfully her deflection seemed to work as Rio's brows furrowed in thought, eventually shrugging dismissively. "...Okay got it no embarrassing gestures."
Agatha internally laughed at Rio's mumbled words, taking a step towards her wife. "Has it always been that easy to get you to stop being mad?"
Rio seemed to notice that Agatha thought she had acquired some kind of high ground within their argument and immediately straightened herself with a smirk. "Oh, I wasn't mad, I just wanted to see you squirm."
"I hate you."
"No, you don't."
Agatha pursed her lips in annoyance but eventually relented, keeping her gaze fixed on Rio as she approached. "No, I don't. Though I don't see how getting the entire station to see me drag you around like a dog achieved anything."
“Maybe this was my plan?” Rio purred, letting Agatha back her up until her hips hit the side of the desk, not that it did anything to wipe away the grin on her face. “Maybe I wanted to watch you trip over yourself for some semblance of control only to end up exactly where I wanted you.”
Agatha raised a brow, deciding to play along for the time being. “And where exactly is that?”
Rio hummed in thought, looking around Agatha’s office as she ran her index finger against the dark wood of her desk. “Here.” She eventually admitted, meeting Agatha’s gaze. “Preferably with you fucking me against this desk but you know, I’m impartial to positioning.”
Under normal circumstances, Agatha would have been able to take Rio’s words at face value, and truthfully Rio probably meant for her words to be taken that way but as usual, her eyes gave her away.
Agatha held in the urge to react, her pride kept under wraps as she stepped towards Rio who merely cocked her head at the approach. “Oh really? Were you that sure I’d go along with it?”
“Yes.”
“And you said you’re impartial to positions?”
Rio absentmindedly licked her lips, looking Agatha up and down before shrugging. “Maybe.”
“So if I asked you to get down on your knees for me right now would you do it?”
Rio froze, eyes widening in shock as she clearly hadn't been expecting Agatha to follow up with that.
And she had to admit, it was always extremely satisfying to catch Rio off guard despite how rarely that happened.
Agatha watched as Rio's eyes flew between the desk and Agatha, something akin to desire already mounting in her eyes, only becoming more apparent when Agatha took a final step forward, practically closing the distance between them.
"Well?" Agatha asked, cocking her head expectantly. "Why are you still standing?"
It seemed those words were enough to finally snap Rio out of whatever trance she had been under, prompting her to immediately react to the command as if it were second nature.
Agatha didn't miss the way Rio kept her eyes locked on her as she got to her knees, something that she noted with delight.
Chuckling, Agatha dragged her finger against the contour of Rio's jaw, keeping the touch light, teasing almost, until she pressed a nail against the underside of her chin and manually tilted Rio's head up. "Maybe you were right." She hummed absentmindedly, loving the way Rio's eyes only seemed to darken the more she spoke. "At least if everyone here got to see me dragging you away they'll know who's really in charge."
Rio looked like she was about to add something but Agatha stopped her with a sharp press of her nail against the underside of Rio's chin, delighting at the low moan it got her. "I know how you think, Rio. You've been imagining doing this for a while, haven't you?"
Somehow, Rio managed a sheepish grin as she shrugged. "Guilty."
"Hmm, cute," Agatha said, letting go of her hold on Rio's chin as she stood and walked over to the office door.
"Wh-Wait where are you going?" Agatha heard Rio frantically call, muffled scuffling sounds erupting from behind her as Rio got to her feet and tried to make herself look like she wasn't just on her knees when Agatha went to open the door to her office.
Glancing back, Agatha gestured towards the doorway expectantly. "To the morgue, I need to double-check some samples."
There was an unspoken assumption that Rio was meant to follow her, and to Agatha's delight Rio did just that. Somehow Rio had managed to regain her composure in seconds before falling into steps with Agatha as they walked, albeit still looking a little red under her collar.
Strangely Rio didn't speak up at all for the first ten minutes they were in the morgue. Agatha was inclined to take that as a good sign since it actually allowed her to do her job, something that she wasn't even sure she'd been able to do since entering the station.
Not that the quiet lasted long anyway.
"So, you know Sarge?"
Agatha was vaguely aware of one of her coworkers trying to make small talk with Rio and honestly, she should have been less surprised.
Her coworkers were nosy, nosy enough that they were willing to ask a stranger at work about Agatha just to get some information. Agatha would have found it admirable if it didn't greatly annoy her.
"Yep," Rio answered, eyes still fixed on the body in front of them. "We go way back."
"Oh," Eric uttered, looking back down at the body laid out on the table for a moment before nudging Rio with his elbow. "Any embarrassing stories to tell?"
And suddenly the prospect of breaking her coworker's nose didn't seem like that much of a reach.
If Agatha was being honest it wasn't even the question itself that prompted her anger. Eric touching Rio, however? Even if it was just a light nudge and yeah okay no one knew that Rio was married to her specifically and that was completely her fault but that didn't mean she wasn't allowed to be annoyed when someone decided that touching Rio was fair game.
Rio didn't seem to mind the touch, though Agatha didn't miss the way her fingers twitched for something to grab, most likely her dagger which unfortunately she wasn't allowed to carry while in uniform. Agatha had heard Rio complain at lengths about that particular limitation; "Why do they let us carry a gun but no daggers? It's the same exact thing, at least the knife is less obvious."
Suffice to say that complaint was never remedied.
Regardless, Rio didn't outwardly show how the touch had irked her, instead throwing a glance at Agatha before grinning back at Eric. "Oh, you wouldn't believe how many there are."
"Okay, that's enough." Agatha cut in, grabbing Rio by the wrist and pulling her out of the morgue, ordering over her shoulder. "Eric make sure the autopsy report matches the body, and tell the others not to disturb me for the next hour."
"Uh, sure thing Sarge-"
Agatha didn't bother waiting for the rest of his response before she was out the door, Rio gleefully following along and Agatha was sure that even if she didn't have a firm grip on her wrist Rio would still have been at her heel.
She tried to ignore the looks they were inevitably getting, pushing it all to the back of her mind as she tried to focus on the warmth of Rio's wrist. It kind of worked. But then again, feeling eyes on her had never been something Agatha liked, only in certain contexts and this was definitely not one of them. Not that she could fully blame her coworkers for staring, unfortunately.
Seeing someone getting dragged through the station? That was a show.
Twice in one day though? That was a spectacle.
"Feeling jealous cara mia?" Rio drawled, watching with amusement as Agatha shoved her into her office, shutting the door behind them and aggressively pulling down the blinds until she was sure that no one outside could see them.
Whirling around, Agatha grabbed Rio's face and tugged her forward in one swift movement, desperate to feel Rio against her. She didn't care when their teeth clacked together due to the initial force, even less so when the pain was quickly replaced with pleasure as they easily fell back into their familiar rhythm, Rio's hands already gravitating to Agatha's hips as she moaned against her mouth.
Agatha pulled back just as suddenly as she had pulled Rio in, internally smirking at the dazed look on Rio's face as she backed away.
Rio took a moment to regain her bearings, hands clutching onto empty air when she noticed that Agatha wasn't in her personal space anymore. A reminder that prompted the pout that Agatha loved so much to make an appearance as Rio looked at Agatha with barely veiled disappointment.
Agatha laughed, reveling in the fact that Rio probably thought that was all she was going to get until they got home and yet somehow wasn't whining to change Agatha's mind. Not that it matters since her assumption was wrong to begin with.
Running a finger against the top of her desk, Agatha looked up at Rio with a coy smile, nodding down towards her chair. "Is that offer to get down on your knees still available?"
If Agatha had been more concerned with saving face she might have been more annoyed at the wide grin Rio now sported, eyes practically twinkling with delight as she approached Agatha. Her grin turned wicked when Agatha took a seat at her desk, staring her down with anticipation clear in her eyes. "I thought you'd never ask."
Somehow, that ended up being the only time they did anything particularly scandalous at work.
Not that they had much time to try anything else given that three days later their John Doe had been successfully ID'd which had proved that he was, in fact, from the county, so Rio wasn't needed to supervise anything anymore.
Truthfully, Agatha couldn't tell if Rio was upset or happy when she was told that news but judging by her grin as Alice and a few other detectives thanked her for her help, she probably didn't mind much.
Agatha didn't get up to join them, content to wait for Rio to stalk her way into her office and lean against the doorway expectantly. "Guess my time here is up, Detective."
Walking over to Rio, Agatha leaned her hand against the doorknob and hummed. "Seems so. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we appreciated the help."
"Well you know me, I'm always down to be benevolent to the less fortunate." Rio teased, eyes lowering to Agatha's exposed collarbone with a grin. "Especially when it comes with a nice view."
That pulled a laugh from Agatha, playfully smacking her hand against Rio's shoulder. "You're lucky they're sending you back or I could report you for harassment."
Rio nodded. "Very lucky, but don't worry, next time you get another case with unclear jurisdiction I'll ask the boss to put me on it immediately."
“So you can be more of a pain in the ass? Lovely.” Agatha huffed, forcing a smile down when that admission only caused Rio to grin wider.
She could feel her coworkers' eyes on them, no doubt waiting for all of the tension between them to culminate into some big fight.
But then again, Rio was always ready to prove people wrong.
“Hmm, you love me though.” Rio purred, low enough that Agatha knew no one else could hear but they could definitely see how close Rio was getting.
Agatha raised a brow, inadvertently asking Rio where she planned to go with this and clearly Rio had been waiting for such a question.
Leaning forward, Rio offered Agatha a grin before going in to kiss her, and Agatha let her.
She was vaguely aware of someone gasping somewhere behind Rio but didn’t pay it any mind, allowing her eyes to fall shut as she let a hand rest against Rio’s waist, tugging her impossibly closer in retaliation when she felt Rio smiling against her.
That smile was still in place when they pulled away, and while Agatha wanted nothing more than to lean back in she was at work. Even if she had just blown her one secret right in the middle of her job, not that she minded anymore, she had no interest in pushing any workplace rules beyond that.
Rio took a step back, not that it really created that much distance between them, and spoke. “I’ll make sure to pick Nicholas up after work, have fun babe.”
“I thought we agreed to keep work and our private life separate?” Agatha reminded, offering Rio an unimpressed look though the slight quirk of her lips told Rio that she wasn’t that irritated.
Rio shrugged coyly, absentmindedly smoothing the wrinkles of Agatha’s button-up with a smile. “I agreed to no such thing, work and play remember?”
Rolling her eyes halfheartedly, Agatha let Rio adjust her shirt collar as she saw fit before offering her one last kiss. "I remember, though I don't remember the play part going like this."
"Yeah, yeah," Rio mumbled, glancing down at her phone with a frown. "I actually need to go but I'll see you later, don't have too much fun without me." She added, her grin easily returning.
"I doubt I will," Agatha said, unable to hold back the smile that was now permanently etched onto her face as she offered Rio a wave in response to her playful salute. Despite the looks she was getting Agatha kept her eyes glued on Rio's form until she was completely out of sight, hand dropping slowly though her smile remained intact.
At least until she spun around and saw Alice looking at her knowingly.
"So?"
Out of everyone there, Agatha was probably more likely to be lenient towards Alice's teasing but there was no way she was entertaining more than one comment even from her.
“Happy wife, happy life,” Agatha shrugged, ignoring the chuckle that got out of Alice and instead turning to the rest of her coworkers. “Unless someone has new information about the case I don’t want to be disturbed, now get back to work all of you.” Agatha barked out, ignoring the wide-eyed looks she was getting as she closed the door to her office behind her, making sure to lower the blinds just so that she didn’t feel like a spectacle for longer than necessary.
Falling back into her chair, Agatha had just let out a long sigh when a sudden loud chirping sound coming from her pocket made itself known, disturbing her attempt at relaxing.
Pulling her phone out of her pocket, Agatha couldn’t stop the smile tugging at her lips when she noticed the text Rio had sent her.
Rio <3: sry for leaving wish I could have stayed to see the look on their faces longer but smth came up
Rolling her eyes, Agatha typed back.
Don’t text and drive hun.
Rio <3: u know im good at multitasking in the car sweetheart, anyways gluck with ur nosy coworkers I gotta dash :p
Agatha resisted the urge to respond, knowing that now was probably not the time to aim for some type of revenge even if her wife showing up to her job had undoubtedly pleased some part of her.
Though that now meant that Agatha would at best have to deal with looks for the rest of the day and at worst deal with questioning for the rest of the week while Rio was off galavanting on a case with her coworkers who Agatha knew couldn’t give less of a fuck that she was married.
She was so going to get her back for this.
