Work Text:

It was all so contrived and coincidental that it was driving him mad.

Spade was an extravagant man who took pride in showing off and gloating in other's faces. So when the date of an anniversary with his beloved approached, he knew he wanted to do something big. It was their first, after all, first times were always huge, and Asgore had changed his life to such a degree that the only way he could express it was with his typical roundabout theatrics. Though the thought of showing off their love permeated as well, bragging about how much luckier and happier he was than anyone else without having to even speak.

He had started planning months in advance, looking into banquet halls and catering and decorations and such. As the date approached, however, every single step failed. The locations and catering were all booked up, the decorations in stock just weren't to his liking, and worst of all his duties as King took precedent over everything, meaning he had to sit in boring meetings while thinking about what a disaster it was all going to be the day of. He couldn't even plan anything last minute during the month, since so many conferences were scheduled then and nobody would have the time for an impromptu gathering.

Finally, the day arrived and he had nothing to show for it. His only day off during a week full of useless meetings and he wouldn't even be enjoying himself during the time off.

He was miserable. Slumped over on the edge of the roof of his grand palace, overlooking the front courtyard with a hefty sigh.

"Gosh, I don't think I'll ever get used to that view. Are you enjoying it while you can?"

He recognized that voice immediately. He couldn't bring himself to look at him. "Asgore......I'm sure you already know the answer to that."

The boss monster let out a nervous chuckle, putting something down behind him and sitting down next to his lover. Resting his head on his shoulder and wrapping an arm around him, he looked out over the courtyard as well.

"Come now, it's absolutely beautiful! Just look at the way the leaves sway in the breeze, and the landscaping...truly something fit for a king." Asgore got lost in the view for a while. Obviously taking his time to try and identify every plant, enjoying the sight of such healthy flora arranged in such a simple yet effective way.

Turning his head to gaze at him, Spade's grumpy expression softened. They hadn't spoken a word to each other all day yet here he was, sitting by his side and smiling like nothing was wrong. He was a curious man, Spade had always thought so, and couldn't figure him out even after all this time of having known him. Still, something in him stirred, and he reached his arm around the man to recipriocate his hug.

That is, until his hand brushed an item.

At his confused face, Asgore piped up quickly. "Oh! Right, I almost forgot about.....Here! Happy anniversary, my dear," he said with a smile, pulling out a beautiful bouquet from behind his back and presenting it to Spade.

He took it into his hands, turning it over and examining it. It was a typical Asgore bouquet save for the fact it was made entirely of flowers from the Dark World, and ones Spade found most striking at that.

"I've been noticing what flowers you look at most on our walks, so I collected some and did what I do best! I do hope you like it."

His consideration.....Spade had almost forgotten. It was their anniversary TOGETHER, of course Asgore would have something planned of his own! He was so wrapped up in his own misery he hadn't even realized. A grin spread across his face, and he properly wrapped his arm around his partner and kissed his cheek.

"It's lovely, Asgore, thank you. Happy anniversary to you too."

Notes:

Happy (late) birthday to Kooki!!! Since his bday is a day before Undertale's anniversary, I figured I'd take inspiration from both to write this :P Short and sweet, but I hope you enjoyed regardless!!
