"Elena! ven aquí!" She heard her mother, Penelope call from the living room.
"Ugh." She groaned under her breath, rolled her eyes so hard she was sure they would fall out of her head and shut her book with her bookmark where she left off. She stomped quietly to where her mom was watching a movie on the television.
"What?" Elena groaned, slightly annoyed, as she stood in front of the TV. If she got interrupted then so would her mother. Elena smirked.
"Move first." Her mom said calmly.
Her mom paused the movie she had been watching on Netflix and turned to her daughter who sat on the couch next to her, and taking a handful of her popcorn?!
"Hands off the corn!" Penelope slapped her daughter's hand away and protected the bowl of popcorn in an embrace, not unlike a mother would her newborn baby. Like she had a million times to her two new born babies.
"Hey!" Elena yelped as she shoved the popcorn that she scored into her mouth. "What did you want anyway, I was in the middle of reading! You know reading time equals me time." She gesticulated to herself with her hands.
"I need you and Alex to stay here Friday through Sunday evening."
"What?! Me and Syd have a date night. You know those are rare now that we are in a crucial point in our high school career! And they were gonna take me out for dinner and a movie, come on!" She groaned and slouched further down on the couch, crossing her arms in annoyance.
"I know, Mija. But, please? I need to know that you are safe in our own home. Not out on the streets where anything bad can happen, I don't want to worry about you if I don't have to. I will be out of town, with Dr. Berkowitz and El Bobo for a medical conference."
"Can Syd at least come over, then?" Elena pouted. "Alex and Abuelita will be here so it's not like we'll do anything inappropriate while you're gone. We'll just be in my room--with the door open--watching shows or movies. And reading together." She pleaded, hoping her mom will agree.
"Abuelita will be with me, doing whatever it is when she and Dr. B do when they are alone. You and Alex will be here alone with Schneider upstairs. Or here. I don't know."
"Really?" Elena gasped dramatically, like her Abuelita, putting her hand over her heart. "Me and Alex...here alone? Are you sure we can handle that?" She said slowly and sarcastically.
"Don't give me that 'tude, girl." Penelope waggled her finger in her daughter's face, Elena rolled her eyes.
"Anyways, your Abuelita will be with me and Dr. B. So, I'm trusting you and Alex to be here alone. And yes, Syd can join you guys. Only because I doubt you would want to do anything with him here, am I right?"
"Ugh, yes. I promise we won't do 'it'." She used finger quotes to emphasize her point. "Or anything related to 'it', maybe a peck on the cheek or lips when Alex isn't paying attention but nothing more than that, deal?" She held her hand out for her mom to shake.
She shook it. "Deal." Penelope said softly, smiling. Her daughter was growing up so much in these past few months. "I love you, Mija. Very much." She pulled her daughter into her arms. I'll leave money for pizza."
"Okay." Elena nodded her head. "I Love you too, Ma. Can I go back to reading now, I was almost done with the chapter I was on." She mumbled into her mom's shoulder.
"Sure, 'lena. I need to see how this movie ends. Your Abuelita and Alex will be here in a while."
"Okay. See ya." She waved and went back to her room to continue reading.
