Turns out her sister is the Avatar.

All of the Avatar's I can find are only children, and I felt like playing with sibling dynamics. So I gave Korra an older sister.

Chapter 1: Growing up with the Avatar

Chapter Text

Ahnah is 2 years old, and she is so excited to meet her new sister. Mommy looks tired, but her and Daddy look so happy. Daddy waves her over, and lifts her so she can see.

“This is your sister, Korra.” Korra looks squishy, and red. Ahnah already knows she loves her.

“Can I hold her?”

Ahnah is only allowed to hold her after sitting on the bed and being surrounded by cushions. Korra still cries after getting her cheeks poked.

Ahnah is 6, and her sister is firebending. Ahnah is incredibly jealous.

“Mom!” She whines. “Why can Korra firebend and I can’t!”

Mom drops her mending. “KORRA CAN FIREBEND?”

Turns out her sister is the Avatar. Ahnah doesn’t fully understand what that means, but Mom says it means that Korra can bend all the elements. And because she’s the only one in the world that can do that, she’s special. And that means other special people want to meet her.

People like Master Katara, who ‘knew Korra in her past life’. Whatever that means.

Ahnah is watching Master Katara teach Korra waterbending from behind a door when Katara turns to look at her and says, “Come here, child.” Apparently she’s not as well hidden as she thought. “Would you like to join us?”

“Can I?”

“Can she?”

Katara smiles at her. “Of course. You can waterbend, right?”

“Of course she can!” Korra says proudly. “She’s my sister!”

Ahnah nods. “But…I can’t firebend, though.”

Katara laughs. “Neither can I.”

Ahnah is 12, and her sister is done with her waterbending training. She’s moving on to Earth, and apart from Ahnah.

Ahnah is sitting against a wall with Naga, watching Korra go through her new forms without her, when she hears footsteps she recognizes. Master Katara doesn’t go towards Korra, but stops to talk to Ahnah.

“I remember when Aang moved on to earthbending.” She says wistfully.

“What did you do?”

“It was a war, there was plenty of things to do.”

“Well, what do I do?”

“I might have an idea...”

Ahnah is 16, and has been Master Katara’s apprentice for 4 years now. She has found a natural talent for healing, and now, Master Katara is letting her accompany her and Master Kya to the coronation of the new Fire Lord!

Ahnah bursts in on her sister’s meditation session attempt to tell her the news. Korra happily takes the distraction.

“We’re going to Caldera City?” She asks.

I’m going to Caldera City.” Ahnah points at herself. Then points at her sister. “You’re staying here to continue your training.”

Korra looks confused. “So they want the Avatar’s sister there, but not the Avatar?”

“I’m not going as the Avatar’s sister, I’m going as Master Katara’s apprentice.”

“But the Avatar was at the last one.” Korra whines.

“A fully realized one, yes.”

“I mean Aang was younger than me when-”

Ahnah cuts her off. “Okay, then. Airbend right now.”

Her sister has no comeback for that. She just pouts and asks in a quiet voice. “How come you get to leave the compound?”

“Nobody’s tried to kidnap me, Kor.”

“Get out of my room.” Ahnah has to dodge a pillow on her way out.

Right before they got on the Air Bison, Korra still gave Ahnah a big hug, and Ahnah promised to tell her every detail of what she saw.

Ahnah is 19, and she would usually be helping at the free clinic in Harbor City, but her sister asked her if she wanted to watch her firebending test, and Ahnah wouldn’t dream of saying no.

She watches Korra expertly dodges and dissipates plumes of fire, and doles them back in equal measure, taking down her opponents. Master Katara and the White Lotus are discussing how Korra is doing but Ahnah couldn’t care less. She is so proud of her sister.

With a flip and a final barrage of fire, Korra takes out her last opponent. As Korra whoops, Ahnah starts clapping then realizes she’s the only one clapping and so awkwardly stops clapping.

Korra takes her helmet off and runs up to the spectators. “Hey, why all the doom and gloom, people? We should be celebrating! Three elements down, one to go!”

The old people don’t seem to agree with Korra, but Ahnah continues beaming at her sister and leans her hand out of sight to give her a thumbs-up. Thanks to Katara, the White Lotus agree to pass Korra.

Ahnah finds Korra telling Naga, and runs up and envelops her in a hug. “I am SO PROUD of you!” She feels her feet leave the ground, but she doesn’t care. “My little sister conquered yet another element!”

“Yes I did!” Korra said proudly. “All that’s left is air, and I’ll be a fully realized Avatar!”

“With aaallll the responsibility that entails.”

“At least I’ll get to see the world, finally." Korra sets her sister down. "Like you.”

“Yeah, right. After what happened at the coronation, I’m happy just seeing the clinic and your stupid face.”

“You love my stupid face.”

“We have the same stupid face.”

“Not completely.”

They walk together, laughing and looking forward to seeing Korra's airbending teacher soon.
