Chapter Text
Birds are chirping and ready to start their day, singing a cheerful tune. The sun rises in the horizon and light shines through the window in Yugi's bedroom, rousing him from his sleep.
"Urg… is it morning already?" Yugi said tiredly while rubbing his eyes, hoping to make the sleepiness go away. He kicked the blanket off of him and stretched his legs in the air, doing a quick exercise before getting out of bed. His starfish-shaped hair sprayed in all directions making it more wild than usual.
“Good morning to you too, Yugi.” Yami said through the mind link. His transparent form appeared to be sitting next to his host, but quickly duck to avoid getting hit face-first with Yugi’s leg.
“Oh! Morning, mou hitori no boku. Sorry about that,” Yugi scooted backwards a bit, leaving a comfortable space between the two, “That was almost a near hit! Did you have the reflex of a sports player?”
Yugi said it as a joke before getting up from the bed as he began to change out of his pajamas behind the wardrobe. He pulled out a different colored shirt and started to compare them to the others in storage.
What he didn’t expect was the answer he received.
“Well, perhaps. I did play a yo-yo that one time on the rooftop and avoid falling down a 10 ft tall building-”
Yugi immediately dropped the shirt he was holding.
“You what!?”
Yami immediately sensed a great disturbance in Yugi’s bedroom and vanished back into the puzzle, gracefully saving him from having a pillow thrown right through him. It flew into the air and faceplant at the door, falling down into a sad lump of a once-fluffed-up pillow.
“You can’t just drop a bombshell and leave, Yami!”
Today is Saturday, so they’re free to do whatever they’d like for another day. Yugi is planning to meet up with his friends today, inviting Joey, Tea and Tristin to the park. Since when do they have a time like this when they're not saving the world from total destruction?
Almost zero.
The only time Yami really came out and did something other than playing card games with ridiculous penalties- ‘ If you lose the duel, you lose your soul’ moment, was an outing with Tea.
After Yugi got all dressed up, he and the spirit got down to the kitchen to eat something, took a piece of toast from the toaster and smeared a generous amount of strawberry jam on top.
“What would you like?”
Yami thought for a moment before appearing next to Yugi. He looked at the available jams on the countertop and decided to go with the one he’s most familiar with.
“Olives?” His usual low voice climbed up an octave as he questioned his own choice of fruit.
Yugi paused as he stared at the olive oil, sitting innocently on the table.
“It… won’t taste good.”
The spirit then turned to look at another assortment of glass jars… and hummed to himself, “I’ve seen you use the orange jam before.”
Yugi smiled and nodded his head, “Yeah, that works. Let me switch with you after I’m done with mine.”
Yami watched the slow and steady pace of his partner putting the strawberry and orange jams on the rest of the toasts. When that’s done, Yugi tapped him on the shoulder to signal the switch.
The breakfast was peaceful and calm. As Yami sat down to eat the toast with a happy smile, Yugi’s transparent form appeared beside him, watching as he got to enjoy the small thing in life… which is of course- toasted bread.
“If we had the technology to make toast like this back then, I’d eat more stale bread.”
Yugi laughed before slapping a hand to his mouth, “S-sorry, I shouldn’t laugh at that- and what do you mean stale bread? …though you’re right. Things would be more convenient.”
Yami grinned before taking another bite on the toast, but this time it’s Yugi’s strawberry jam filling.
There’s a loud gasp coming from Yami’s right side and a finger was quickly pointed at him.
“You sly pharaoh!”
The pharaoh in question stuck his tongue out at Yugi and he retaliated by pushing the plate as far away as he could from the toast stealer. It was all fun and game until the object actually slid away from Yami’s hand that it stopped- almost falling off the kitchen table.
They both stared silently at the empty spot where the plate should be then turned to look at each other. Eyes as wide as a plate.
“I didn’t know you could do that.”
“Me neither…”
It’s too big of a discovery to pass up, so they immediately went to try on other items in the house, testing to see if that was a fluke.
“What about this one?”
It took an embarrassingly short amount of time for Yugi to swat items off a high shelf as if there’s an invisible cat- namely, invisible Yugi, in the shop and the sound of clanging almost spook the socks out of them.
Yugi grinned before turning to his darker half. He’s buzzing with extra energy, “Imagine all the pranks we can do.”
Yami doesn’t even mind it. In fact, he was totally on board with the future chaos this would bring.
“Not counting the body swapping?”
“Not counting the body swapping.”
After breakfast, Yugi swapped back with the spirit and walked out of the shop. He saw his grandpa, who had woken up early to sweep the front of the Game shop. Solomon smiled and gave him a pat in the back.
“Have fun with your friends, Yugi!”
“I will, Gramps!” He said goodbye to his grandpa before making a line towards the park.
"What are we going to do today... you got any idea, Yami?" Asked Yugi while he was walking. It's pretty early in the morning, so not many people are walking around. Making him able to talk to the spirit without getting weird glances.
Yami then appeared in his transparent form, floating alongside Yugi, “ I have no idea Yugi, but I'm sure our friends already got something planned.”
The sunlight streamed through the leaves, casting soft shadows on the path he’s walking. A flock of birds then flew above, chirping their lovely tune. A single golden feather gently drifted from the sky, glowing bright amber.
Yugi looked up to the clouds above as he felt the wind rustle through his hair. The light feather touched his forehead as he tilted his head upward. Everything sounded far away and Yami turned to look at Yugi when he no longer felt him walking.
“Yugi?”
The millennium puzzle sits warmly on his shirt then it starts glowing eerily bright.
“Y- gi…!” Yami tried calling out to him, but the sound was muffled like hearing something underwater. The spirit could feel the sudden vertigo overcoming him, but he fought to stay awake.
“What is… happening,” His transparent form started to fade in and out of view, “...so much for a normal day.” Was Yami last thought before he was roughly pulled in because of his tie with the millennium puzzle.
Then everything went dark.
