Chapter Text

He didn’t understand him at all. That goddamn knight! How dare he ignore Revali’s amazingness! And he never even said a word! Did he think Revali wasn’t worth his time? He was so done with the whole “chosen hero” thing!

He didn’t understand him at all, and now he had to teach the little brat how to shoot with bow and arrow. Because apparently he had failed to learn how in his lifetime of training to be a knight. Wonderful.

“Have you ever even touched a bow before???”, he screamed. He wasn’t even doing that badly, there was just something about the seemingly silent knight that rubbed Revali entirely the wrong way.”What in Hylia’s name are you doing? This is the third time you’ve missed! Please just let me show you, I can’t stand to watch anymore”. Revali walked up to the man? Boy? Person? What was his name again??, who in turn gave him an annoyed look.

That was probably the most amount of emotion Revali had ever seen him express. He was determined to make it a more common occurrence if only to fuel his ego. Maybe next time he’d even sing a little song for him!

“Be more confident. You draw your bowstring for far too long. Aim before you shoot. But not for too long either, I doubt a moblin would wait for you to gather yourself until you’re ready.”

The knight tried again, surprisingly following the rito’s advice. Revali would have almost been impressed with the shot, had the idiot not managed to trip immediately after and fall flat on his face.

“Oh my.”

He wished Zelda were here with her magic image capture thing. This would be a beautiful addition to her library of boring landscape photos.

Revali stared at him for a few seconds, before the fallen boy groaned quietly and looked up a him with that same slightly pissed off expression he had worn earlier. Revali handed him his wing, helping him up

The rito couldn’t stop himself from snickering, while the knight dusted himself off.

Said knight opened his mouth, as if to say something, but instead he just pointed in the direction of Rito village and started to leave in quick steps. Revali could not let that happen!

For some reason.

He surged forwards, blocking the hylian’s path. Revali himself wasn’t sure what compelled him to do that. Maybe if he were a braver person, he’d admit he didn’t hate the time spent with the knight. Maybe he wanted it to last for a while longer

“Wait! Don’t you want to try shooting from the air? Your aim back then wasn’t that bad, just your balance. Just this once, I’ll carry you. On one condition. Tell me your name? Don’t let this get to your head though.” Revali winced. He was ever so slightly embarrassed for asking. When he really thought about it, he hadnt really done much to deserve the hero’s respect.

The knight frowned. His eyes dropped to the floor and only with great effort he said, ”Link..”

“Link.” A surprisingly nice name for a surprisingly not completely emotionless man. “Right. I knew that, just wanted to confirm. Now hold on tight or fall to your death.”

Link jumped on Revali’s back, hugging his midsection and nuzzling into his feathers. For a better grip, probably.

They continued flying that way, until Revali saw a snow fox from far away. That one would make for a nice few meals. He hoped Link would be able to get a headshot on it, but he wasn’t hopeful.

“I’ll drop you off here. If you don’t get it, I’ll help you out”

Link gave him a look that probably meant he was deeply offended by Revali’s lack of confidence in him. Whatever.

As soon as they landed, Link ran off into the snow. He snuck up stealthily to the fox, one of his only strengths, Revali supposed. When he came close enough, he drew up his bow… Just like that! And hit the fox on its flank. Not a headshot but not bad.

Revali wondered what Link would do now, to finish his prey off. No matter how much he could have wondered, in that lifetime or another, he never would have thought the hylian would pull out a LITERAL BONY ARM and smack the poor animal with it. He quickly flew over to where Link was standing and stared at him in complete horror, though the knight looked at Revali as though he had done nothing out of the ordinary.

“Where did you even get that???”

Link shrugged. Of course he did.

“Do I even want to know??” He shuddered. “We should get back to the flight range at quickly. I didn’t notice before because you were distracting me, but it’s getting pretty stormy and you seem to be wearing absolutely nothing pf warmth. You don’t want to die, and I would prefer the King of Hyrule not get on my back for the death of his little knight. Revali wondered what King Rhoam would do if Zelda came back without her glorified bodyguard one day. That’d be a fun theory to test-

Link coughed, Revali’s feathers puffed up in embarrassment and he brought his attention back to the man. “Right. We need to get out of here. Hop on.”

Link shook his head “no”, pointing to the dead fox.

“Urgh. Why must you be sensible only in situations where it inconveniences me? I agree with you, of course. As a proud member of the rito, i would never waste food like this! As a proud member of the rito, I am also fully aware of the dangers the cold poses, especially to other races with more sensitive skin. Maybe next time you find yourself in a situation like this one you should just grow feathers! I mean that would solve all your problems and-“

A powerful wind blew, ripping Revali’s scarf from his neck, where it had previously been lying loosely. Before it could fly away, and Revali’s shock could turn into panic, Link had caught it with a jump that should have been impossible for someone of his stature.

He offered the scarf to Revali like it was precious, a small smile on his face.

For a second he was speechless, but the rito scoffed. “Fine. We’re equal now.”

Link’s  smile only grew wider at that.

“You carry the fox. I’ll try to shield you from the wind as best as i can. I can see you shivering even from up here!” He was very proud of himself for coming up with that. Even if he wasn’t actually much taller than Link.

For that, he got the third irritated look of the day, though more subdued than it’s predecessors, and a shaky thumbs-up. Hylians really did freeze quickly. He didn’t want to feel any way about that fact, so he didn’t . Even if the hero’s steps slowed and the fox’s tail began to drag in the snow as they reached the small cave Revali had spotted before, Revali did not care.
