Work Text:
Mika sat in seat at the windowsill, as though it were a sunny summer’s day. But it was winter, and a constant cold permeated from outside, slowly infecting most of the cabin. He read a book, one he picked randomly off the small bookshelf in the living room earlier in the day. Some sort of mystery novel involving cats, he had said when asked. Yuu continued to stand in the doorway, observing Mika in his respite. He was pretty sure Mika had been aware of his presence since the moment he entered the room, damn vampire senses and all.
But for the time being, Mika played ignorant, turning to the next page and continuing to read. The fireplace on the other side of the room offered some warmth in the small living room, and sent orange light bouncing off Mika’s blonde hair, and highlighted his red eyes which were deep in concentration.
Yuu’s fingers dug into the palms of his hands.
Red eyes. . .
There were still some mornings, when the color surprised him. When he had expected to see bright blue when Mika turned to greet him in the barracks, or when Yuu woke up to him sitting on the end of the bed putting on his boots. He hoped Mika never noticed.
It had been two years since the end of the war. They still hadn’t found a cure for vampirism. The vampires taken into custody had provided no help through experiments, and no answers to their questions. All the nobles had been killed out of purely the need for survival. Mika took each failed test quietly, his face never giving away a hint of emotion when around JIDA or the scientists. It was the same face he had when people would visibly steer clear of him as they walked the halls of the base together, even though Mika wore the same uniform as them. He was there, but not fully accepted. It always pissed Yuu off, and at first he had threatened every person who treated Mika poorly. After a while, though, Guren had told him to knock it off. Okay, so it took multiple times for Guren to threaten him --
“Yuu-chan?”
Shit, he had been caught up in his thoughts.
“Hey,” Yuu grinned as he crossed the room. He pulled lightly at Mika’s sleeve. “Why are you sitting against the window? It’s cold over here - oh man!” His eyes lit up and he crawled over Mika’s legs, pulling a yelp of surprise out of the vampire.
“It’s snowing!” He turned and looked at Mika, who had set the book aside, giving up on his quiet time. Yuu snorted.
His red eyes softened as he smiled. “Let’s go outside, Yuu-chan.”
“Really?” He stared out the window again. He couldn’t remember the last time they got to enjoy snow. He was starting to be thankful for the gentle nudge from the squad that they all needed a vacation. Even Guren had been okay with the idea.
A hand gripped his shoulder, sliding over a deep scar. Yuu grabbed Mika’s hand and squeezed back. They hadn’t had much alone time over the last two years, let alone the last six months when they started. . .
. . .whatever it was called. It still felt strange to Yuu, to put a label on him and Mika, what they meant to each other. To him, it was just a continuation of things, a new direction for their friendship. Once the dust settled and life had gained a rhythm, a schedule, some sort of fucking normalcy for the first time in pretty much ever, they were able to see things clearly. Feelings which had been expressed, exposed bluntly in the midst of battle, of comrades being killed, when it seemed like things were almost lost. . . those feelings were able to be addressed without any fear that hey, maybe it was the fear of losing everything talking.
Yuu squeezed Mika’s hand one more time. “Well then let’s go, Mika!” He pulled him off the windowsill and dragged him to the bedroom, fitting him in proper attire for traversing the snowy conditions. He ignored Mika’s protests about how he didn’t get cold and so there wasn’t much of a point getting him to look like a giant marshmallow before going outside. He eventually stopped complaining when he realized Yuu wasn’t going to stop. Once they had deemed each other ready, Mika having fussed over Yuu a tad bit more, they made their way outside. The light on the front porch shone over the bright white landscape before them. The snow wasn’t falling too heavy, only lightly dusting the snow settled on the ground. The air was still, nothing to be heard for miles. They stood there together, arms linked, watching and listening.
“It’s beautiful.” Mika’s breath came out in small puffs from behind the scarf wrapped around the lower half of his face.
“Yeah. . .” Yuu released his grip and skipped ahead, trampsing through the snow, making figure eights and kicking snow into the air. He paused a good distance away and made a quick snowball. He looked at Mika with a grin, who just stared back at him, confused.
“Catch!” He shouted as he threw the snowball, hitting Mika square in the chest.
He grunted and took a step back. “What was that for?” Mika dusted the snow off his coat and glared. Yuu laughed and ran in circles, collecting more snow. He aimed and threw another - this time Mika dodged it easily, only moving the upper part of his body to do so.
“No fair! That’s cheating!”
“What, being myself is cheating? You got one hit in, you should consider that a miracle.”
“You could at least slow down a little to give me a chance.”
“Tch,” Mika had a smile on his face despite his arms crossing in front of him to feign annoyance. In the next moment, he was in front of Yuu so quickly he could hardly register the movement. Their noses touched and Mika grabbed his jacket to counterbalance Yuu’s immediate reaction to move backwards to try to flee.
“Sure, I’ll give you a chance to run.”
“Wha..what?”
Mika held a snowball in his hand, close to Yuu’s face. “1. . .”
“Shit!” Yuu sprang back and ran as fast as he could in the almost knee deep snow. The sound of Mika counting echoed in the otherwise silent woods. He positioned himself behind a tree, packing as big of a snowball as he figured he could throw.
The counting had stopped - what was Mika counting to, anyways? Ten? He held his breath, trying to listen for any sign of him being near.
He turned to his right, peering around the tree. Hot air tickled his neck.
“Fuck!” He jumped but it was too late - snow was pushed into his jacket and into his hair, “Mika what the fuck that’s not what you do!” He turned, hissing at the cold dripping between layers of clothing. Mika leaned against the tree, laughing.
“Your face, it’s priceless!”
“I’ll show you!” Yuu dove at his waist, tackling the guy and taking them both to the ground with a soft thump as they sank into the snow.
“Gross I’m getting wet, Yuu-chan! Get off!”
“Haha, how do you like it now!” Mika pushed at Yuu and they rolled through the snow, clothes getting soaked through to the skin, but they were both laughing, and it was pretty amazing. Yuu lost his beanie somewhere, and Mika’s was barely hanging on by the time they stopped rolling, with Mika pinning him to the ground. Yuu tried to throw more snow in his face, but Mika pulled his arms up above his head with one hand.
“Okay okay Mika, I give up. You win. You are the alpha!” He laughed the last words, and kicked his legs in a vain attempt to get them out of the snow.
His eyes were shut, mostly because there was water all over his face as the snow melted. His body was hot from moving around so much, so in a way it was refreshing. The grip on his arms tightened. Mika’s body pressed against him, quick bursts of hot air hit his neck through the coat. Yuu registered fingers pulling at the top, resting against his skin under the scarf.
“Mika?” He opened his eyes.
Things happened so quickly, he hardly had time to register Mika’s movements. His coat was suddenly ripped open and he yelled for Mika to snap out of it, but he wasn’t listening. His red eyes were wide, focused on a point to Yuu’s right. It became clear what they were latched onto when teeth plunged into Yuu’s neck. He cried out before being able to stop himself, more out of surprise than anything else. He gripped Mika’s hair - he didn’t want to scare him, but he also knew this wasn’t normal. Mika’s grip on his throat was rough to the point of nearly choking him. Yuu clung to Mika’s shoulder, pushing back against him with all the force he could.
“Mika. . come back to me. Mika!”
The pain in his throat increased as the fangs slid deeper. He shouted out once more. This was different than when Mika usually fed - gentle, careful, a necessity which Mika visibly hated. There was a procedure, a routine, to keep things clean and to not hurt Yuu, that Mika insisted on. This time, fangs cut harder, tore more skin than necessary, as Mika’s tongue roughly pressed against the wound. Mika sucked at the opening desperately, forcing more blood into his mouth.
“Mika,” Yuu slid his hand to cup the vampire’s cheek. His heart raced, but he tried not to panic.
Shoulders rose and shuddered. The pain receded. He let out a sigh at the feeling of the fangs being removed. Mika sat up quickly, a hand covering his mouth. Yuu could see blood smeared down his chin and up his cheeks. His eyes were wide, tears overflowing and making paths in the red stains.
“Shh, hey, Mika, it’s okay-”
But he was gone, moving back towards the cabin.
“Mika!” Yuu stood carefully, not sure how much blood he has lost. The whiteness around him made everything dizzying, and he had to stop before long. He braced himself against a tree and took deep breaths as he tried to get his equilibrium back on track. Slowly he made his way to the cabin with careful steps. The door stood open, and as he walked in he noted clothes tossed around haphazardly, leading a trail to the bedroom.
He stood still, weighing what to do next. He put pressure on the wound on his neck - it still stung, bad, and he felt the blood still slick all over his throat. He curled his fingers back and walked to the kitchen. He tore off his outer layers and carefully washed the wounds. Dark red ran down the sink as he washed his hands and rinsed his neck. He tried to ignore the pain as he wiped at the cuts.
He hadn’t seen Mika look so desperate, behave so much like a predator, since. . . the first time, in Nagoya. He gripped the sink at the memories. He considered it one of the worst days in his near-adult life, if he had to be honest.
He debated how long he should wait before he scolded Mika for letting it get to this point. He was well aware Mika had been stretching out the time between feedings as much as possible; it was something they argued about regularly.
Yuu made sure he wasn’t too lightheaded to move before drying off. Under the sink he found a first aid kit, and thankfully a large white patch which he applied to the wound. He didn’t want Mika to see it and get more upset. He squared his shoulders and took slow steps to the room and pushed the door open.
“Mika?” He stepped inside and closed the door, stilling himself to allow his eyes to adjust. On the bed he could tell Mika had hidden under all the comforters they had piled onto it to help with staying warm. Yuu crawled over tentatively until the body tensed at his touch.
“Hey, Mika, it’s alright.”
“No, it’s not.” The muffled voice spoke from somewhere in the middle. Yuu pulled at the blankets and crawled under, grasping for contact. He could tell Mika was curled up in the fetal position on his side, arms tucked around his waist, his back to Yuu. He wrapped his arms around Mika.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner? You always say you’re fine. Stop stalling when you’re so hungry!” He wasn’t sure if it was the right time to be starting a fight, but he was worried for Mika and his well being, if he was letting it get this bad.
Mika didn’t answer. He only curled in on himself further. They had had this conversation a hundred times already. But things had never gotten to the point where Mika attacked out of bloodlust.
“Oy, Mika.” Yuu clung to him tighter. He buried his face in the back of Mika’s neck. “We’re in this together, remember? Until we find a cure, you have to take care of yourself so you don’t die, idiot.”
Fingers interlaced with his own. Mika nodded his head but didn’t make any other movement. It was as much as an acknowledgement as Yuu figured he would get. He stayed there, offering his warmth even though it wouldn’t change the coldness in Mika’s body, until he fell asleep.
Yuu became vaguely aware he had adjusted to be lying on his back at some point in the night. He was still too tired to open his eyes, but he sensed movement around him - Mika, waking up. He didn’t sleep too much and often spent most of the night reading in another room after Yuu fell asleep. This time though, Yuu registered on the borders of his consciousness Mika wasn’t leaving the bed. Instead he curled up against him. It wasn’t a rare occurrence, but it certainly didn’t happen often. He dozed off, not minding the comfort of Mika’s arm wrapped around his waist, his face nuzzling against his shoulder.
He stirred again later when a hand slid down his stomach, of fingers toying with the band of his boxers. He had apparently taken off his pants at some point, though he didn’t remember. He debated if he might be dreaming. It wouldn’t be the first dream like this with Mika.
He and Mika had kissed a lot, sure. And some over the clothes touching, usually prompted by Yuu, in the brief times they could get away with it. But again, living and working in the military didn’t allow for much privacy for them to do much else with each other, comfortably. It wasn’t something they even talked about much-
The hand slid under the boxers, palming him. Yuu, half asleep still, moaned before he could stop himself. His hips moved on their own in reaction to the friction.
If this is a dream, I don’t want to wake up.
Hot breath tickled his neck as the hand wrapped around his growing erection, urging his lower half to wake up more. Yuu groaned again, loudly, not giving a fuck because hey, it was either a dream, or no one was around anyways to hear. Mika was touching him, and it felt so fucking good.
Mika continued stroking, and he dug a hand into soft golden hair. He tugged and rocked against the motion, wanting even more. Mika responded, and opened his mouth against Yuu’s neck, lips connecting to skin, teeth nipping at him gently.
“Mika…” Yuu’s voice sounded rough and sleepy, but he didn’t want to open his eyes, the sleepiness having not worn off yet, though his mind had come to the conclusion this was, in fact, real life. Weight shifted and Mika rested on top of him. Lips pushed against him at the same time their hips connected, and Yuu felt Mika’s hardness through his pants. He gasped and clung to Mika’s arms as they kissed, tongues exploring each other’s mouths deeply, getting more aggressive by the second. Their moans echoed off the walls.
Mika broke free and trailed kisses down Yuu’s jaw, a hand back at where their hips connected. Yuu whimpered and stretched his neck, giving Mika more room to access the spot Yuu knew by now he fed from.
Mika’s body reacted to the movement, a soft moan vibrating against him.
“Mika, you can-”
“Yuu, no. This is about you,” a finger brushed over the bandage on the other side of Yuu’s throat, “I want to make you feel. . .” The vibration of his voice against Yuu’s neck, Mika’s lips barely touching him, it was driving him more crazy.
“. . .please.” He whispered against Mika’s forehead.
Time froze. Mika’s kept his firm grip as he contemplated Yuu’s words. He started stroking again, more desperate. Mika’s mouth opened wide against his throat, fangs pressing against warm skin. He hissed and gripped Mika’s arm, allowing his voice to carry through the room, begging for Mika to continue.
After two years of being the source of sustenance for Mika, Yuu never imagined it could feel so good, so intimate. Fangs entered him, slowly, piercing through the skin, sinking in as deep as they could. Mika made adjustments to grip both of their erections in his hand and continued pumping. Yuu made a valiant effort to not rock too much against the pressure, considering the action on his neck. He had been ravaged enough on the other side for one day. The sounds Mika made against Yuu’s neck as he fed were otherworldly. He could do this every night, if it meant getting Mika to feel good, to make those sounds, to be more okay with feeding and being alive, being healthy.
Mika’s tongue delicately swirled around the wound, lapping at the blood. With each circle, Mika would slide up their lengths, matching his own rhythm.
Soon Yuu was at his limit, his body reacting to the pain and pleasure building inside him. “Mika!”
The vampire bit a little more, at the same time tightening his grip and moving his hand faster. Yuu screamed out as he climaxed, rolling his hips into Mika’s hand as his shouts grew louder with the intensity of his orgasm. After a few more quick strokes, Mika followed. He didn’t scream but pushed his tongue against Yuu’s throat as his body became rigid, holding on tight until his body finally relaxed.
They lay there in silence for some time, Mika’s mouth still pressed firmly against Yuu, clinging to him tightly.
Eventually, Mika slowly detached himself. Yuu couldn’t stop the arch in his back with the movement, a part of him missing the feeling of being enveloped.
“Yuu-chan.” Mika spoke softly as he slid to the side, clinging tightly. A finger brushed the fresh wound on his neck.
“Hmm?” He was ready to fall asleep instantly.
Silence between them. Mika nuzzled against his neck, letting out the air in his lungs slowly.
“Goodnight.”
“Night, Mika.”
He woke up cold. The sheets had been pushed to the end of the bed. Which wasn’t unusual. He was generally a terrible sleeper, much to his irritation. What was unusual was the body still in bed next to him. Mika wasn’t one to be in bed still in the morning when Yuu woke, on the times they did share a bed.
This morning, though, Mika had wrapped his arms and legs around Yuu as if to try to offer some sort of warmth. His forehead rested against Yuu’s cheek, each breath hitting his face. It was so peaceful. So normal. Yuu ran fingers through soft blonde hair, kissing Mika’s head softly.
“Mika, it’s morning.”
“I know.”
Yuu smiled and laughed softly against Mika’s forehead. Figured, the guy was actually awake. He used his free leg and arm to pull the bunched up sheets towards them both, covering them and returning to hugging Mika.
“Yuu-chan, about yesterday.”
“Mika, don’t--”
“I promise to do better.” Fingers pulled at the collar of his t-shirt.
Yuu clung even tighter, though he was sure he was close to cutting off Mika’s air. “I’ll always be here for you, to help you get through this. Okay?”
Mika softly kissed him on the cheek and held his lips there. Yuu’s eyes wandered to the window as they lay there.
“Mika! It’s snowing again! Really hard this time!” He sat up, tugging at Mika’s arms. “Look look!”
Mika followed, turning to face the window. Yuu clung to him from behind, resting his head on Mika’s shoulder. The snow fell heavily, blocking out the view of the trees he knew circled the cabin. He was thankful they were there for another couple of days.
“We might get snowed in, if this keeps up.” Mika’s thumbs idly drew circles on Yuu’s arms.
“You sound so upset by such a concept,” Yuu snorted, bringing his legs around Mika’s body.
“You know I would rather have you to myself all the time, if I could have things my way,” Mika’s tone was serious, but Yuu could see a smile in the corners of his mouth. The truth was Mika had been accepted into Shinoa’s squad without question. It had taken some coaxing, but Mika warmed up to them over time. He was even at a point where he could throw some good burns at Kimizuki every now and then.
“The squad isn’t so bad, though.”
Mika smiled and he gave a soft laugh. His fingers dug into Yuu’s arms.
“Yuu-chan?”
“Ya?”
“Merry Christmas.”
Yuu buried his face into Mika’s neck, inhaling the smell of him. “Merry Christmas, Mika.”
