Chapter Text

Amidst the dazzling lights of Broadway, Lucy Chen shines as a rising star, her talent illuminating the stage with every performance. With grace and passion, she mesmerizes audiences, weaving tales that resonate deep within the soul. As the curtains rise on her opening night, anticipation fills the air, and Lucy's presence electrifies the theater with a palpable energy. With each line delivered and every note sung, she captures hearts and minds alike, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those fortunate enough to witness her artistry. Lucy Chen is not just a performer; she is a beacon of inspiration, destined to ascend to even greater heights in the world of theater.

Lucy's journey to the Broadway stage is a testament to perseverance and the transformative power of talent meeting opportunity. Growing up far from the glitz and glamour of show business, Lucy's dreams were nurtured quietly, her aspirations kept alive through late-night rehearsals in her childhood bedroom. It was a chance encounter with destiny that changed everything. Director Luna Grey, with her keen ear for raw talent, stumbled upon Lucy singing on a subway platform, her voice echoing through the bustling station like a melody from another world. In that serendipitous moment, Luna saw the spark of something extraordinary and knew she had to act. With unwavering determination, she plucked Lucy from the mundane confines of her office job and thrust her into the dazzling world of Broadway, where her true destiny awaited.

Now Lucy was opening each week on Broadway in her debut show, Day of Death, and she was truly immersed in the world of glitz and glam. Lucy loved it, although she didn’t exactly understand all aspects just yet.

Tonight, just like every week, Lucy sat in her dressing room, carefully brushing her curls out, trying to rest her bustling heart.

“Lucy honey,” Lucy turned her head to meet with her agent, Nyla Harper. Part of her immersion in this world meant having a manager. Nyla was great, pretty much dealt with every aspect of the career Lucy didn’t have a grasp on just yet. She was a great manager, and Lucy respected her so much.

“Nyla, did you enjoy the show?” Lucy smiled.

“I always enjoy watching you perform,” Nyla confirmed. “I just wanted to come and give you my best.”

“I always appreciate you coming to watch me,” Lucy smiled.

“Have any plans tonight?” Nyla asked. “I heard the cast is going out for drinks.”

“Oh,” Lucy nodded, that was the first she heard about it. Lucy loved all aspects of this new lifestyle, however, a part of her was not connecting to social life just yet. “No, I wasn’t invited,”

“Lucy, remember what we talked about?” Nyla reminded gently.

“I know, I know,”

“If you want to keep this life, you have to start making connections. Broadway isn’t always going to hire you because they hear you singing on the subway,” Nyla said softly. Lucy nodded in understanding.

Despite her natural talent and radiant presence on stage, Lucy finds herself grappling with an unexpected challenge: forging meaningful connections with her fellow castmates. While she recognizes the importance of camaraderie and synergy in theater, she struggles to break through the walls that seem to separate her from the rest of the ensemble. Despite her best efforts to engage and connect, she finds herself feeling like an outsider, a lone melody amidst a harmonious choir. Each attempt at forging a bond feels like grasping at fleeting wisps of smoke, leaving her feeling isolated and uncertain. Yet, beneath her uncertainty lies a determination to bridge the gap and find her place within the ensemble, knowing that true connection is not just essential for the success of the production but also her growth as an artist.

Starting next week.

Today, Lucy shifts her focus from the complexities of cast dynamics to the unwavering support of her fans who have gathered eagerly to witness her performance. As she steps out of the theater into the cool night air, she is greeted by a sea of smiling faces and outstretched hands, each holding a cherished playbill awaiting her signature. With genuine warmth in her heart, she takes the time to connect with each fan, sharing laughter and gratitude for their unwavering support. These moments at the stage door are not just about signing autographs; they are about forging genuine connections with those who have been touched by her artistry. As the last playbill is signed and the crowd begins to disperse, Lucy feels a sense of fulfillment knowing that, in the end, it's the bond between performer and audience that truly brings the magic of theater to life. With a smile, she bids her fans goodnight, cherishing the memories of another unforgettable evening on Broadway.

As Lucy is ushered toward her waiting car, her mind still buzzing with the energy of the night's performance, she nearly collides with a tall figure emerging from the shadows. With a reflex honed by years of stage presence, the man deftly catches her arm, steadying her with a gentle touch. Startled, Lucy looks up to meet the gaze of a stranger, his striking features illuminated by the glow of the streetlights. His dirty blonde hair falls in disheveled waves around his face, lending an air of mystery to his presence. For a moment, Lucy is rendered speechless, caught off guard by the unexpected encounter. Yet, as their eyes lock in a silent exchange, she senses a flicker of familiarity, a connection that defies explanation.

“Are you okay?” He asked, his voice starting a ruble within her.

“Fine,” She confirmed. “Thank you for catching me,”

“I don’t mind at all,” the man smirked, all but checking Lucy out. “Be careful out here, wouldn’t want you to fall when I am not here to catch you,”

“We wouldn’t want that,” She laughed politely. The man smiled before all but disappearing into the night, Lucy was left a little awe-struck before her security was ushering her into the car. She couldn’t help but smile once she was settled into the car. It wasn’t every day a handsome stranger made sure she didn’t fall over. What a nice way to end the night.

The next morning dawns with a rare sense of tranquility for Lucy, a welcome respite from the whirlwind of Broadway life. With rehearsals not scheduled until the afternoon, she indulges in a leisurely morning routine, savoring the quiet moments of solitude. As the sun filters through the curtains of her cozy apartment, Lucy unrolls her yoga mat, allowing the soothing rhythm of her practice to ease away any lingering tension from the previous night's performance. With each graceful movement, she finds solace in the stillness, a chance to reconnect with herself amidst the chaos of her bustling career.

After her yoga session, Lucy curls up in a sunlit nook with a captivating novel, immersing herself in a world far removed from the bright lights of Broadway. Lost in the pages of fiction, time seems to slip away, each chapter unfolding like a welcome escape from reality. Determined to preserve her mental well-being, Lucy steers clear of the distractions of the digital realm, relishing the simplicity of unplugged moments.

As the clock ticks closer to noon, Lucy prepares a light lunch, savoring each bite with mindful appreciation. Just as she settles in to enjoy her meal, the familiar trill of her phone interrupts the peaceful silence. With a curious glance, she picks up the call, greeted by the voice of her manager on the other end.

“Nyla, to what do I owe the honor,”

“When I told you to indulge yourself with the socialites of the world, I never would have imagined you would listen to me,” Nyla teased, although Lucy frowned confusedly, unsure what she was talking about.

“Nyla, what are you talking about?”

“Tim Bradford. That’s what I am talking about.” Lucy didn’t know who that was, but his name sounded a bit familiar.

“Who?” She asked.

“You don’t know who Tim Bradford is?” Nyla questioned. “Listen, Lucy, I know you aren’t from this world, but I need to get you out there more often. Get you to parties. Something because this is completely unacceptable.”

“Nyla.” She said trying to get her to focus.

“Right,” Nyla sighed. “Let me refresh your memory, you almost fell last night and Prince Charming came to your rescue.” Oh.

“I didn’t get his name, I just…we didn’t talk much.”

“Have you opened your phone in the last twelve hours?” Nyla questioned.

“No,” Lucy sighed. “What’s going on?”

“The internet is going crazy, apparently Bradford’s fans and yours are shipping you too.” Nyla’s voice was full of amusement, to which Lucy could only roll her eyes. She never really understood the concept of shipping randomly together, but she didn’t see any harm in it. She also didn’t understand why this was a reason for her manager to call.

“Did you call me because you find this amusing?” Lucy questioned.

“No, I called you because his manager called me,” Nyla paused like she was reading something. “Angela Lopez. She wants to talk.”

“About what?”

“I am not sure,” Nyla admitted “But I welcome the idea. So I told them they could meet us after rehearsal.”

“They?”

“Lopez and Bradford” Nyla confirmed. “I figured we hear them out, whatever they want it is an opportunity for you to grow your social network,”

“Okay,” Lucy sighed. “I don’t see the harm,”

“Good,” Nyla said. “Now go prepare yourself for rehearsal.”

As Lucy hangs up the phone, her curiosity piqued by the unexpected call, she can't help but feel a flutter of excitement stir within her. Perhaps this meeting with Tim and his manager holds the promise of new opportunities, a chance to expand her horizons and forge connections beyond the confines of the theater. With a renewed sense of purpose, Lucy embraces the prospect of stepping outside her comfort zone, ready to embrace whatever the future may hold. As she sets aside her phone and prepares to head to rehearsals, a spark of anticipation ignites in her heart, propelling her forward on the journey of discovery that lies ahead.
