Work Text:
One afternoon, a Neo Blue Bomber in the year 21XX had many thoughts racing through his head. Christmas was just around the corner, and every year, poor X couldn’t handle the pressure of buying, let alone giving gifts for everyone every year. Especially for his beloved Phoenix, Zero.
Every DAY, he thinks about his wonderful boyfriend giving him the best presents he could ever ask for. But Xev always feels so bad not giving anything in return as splendidly as Zero has. But at least a look of guilt, his phoenix would always say, “It’s okay. Having you is enough.”
It was always in those words, whether they were exact or not, and the sovereign angel android would feel at least a bit better, even if the guilt still lingered in his core. There was no way he could bring something as amazing to his beloved after all these years they’ve been together.
Crying, laughing, fighting for peace and against the Mavericks. Until he found the perfect gift, there was nothing he could do to erase the guilt he always feels. It’s just how he was. With his potential, his worry, his empathy and pacifism. There always was something he thought about. Whether it was over analyzing, over thinking, or just plain deep thinking at all times throughout the day or night, especially when thinking about Zero, he could never seem to help it.
He tried since then, however, to think of one perfect gift. Many a-days ahead and he still found nothing. One night after finishing paperwork for a mission they both completed, Zero approached and took Xevdex’s hand within his own. Which surprised him, but he took the affection nonetheless, as Zero rubbed his cheek against Xev’s as a bonus, making Xev softly coo to it in response.
He looked up with a loving smile, happy to see his beloved with him again after a hard mission, then feeling the warmth he missed while being alone, with the graciousness of seven mourning doves to greet the sunrise, “Hi, Zero.”
“Hey, Blue Jay.” Zero smiled in return, rubbing his thumb on the back of his Blue Jay’s hand.
“I have something I want to show you.” He said, “I was going to show you on Christmas, but I couldn’t wait any longer. Especially since our last mission had you on edge.”
It was true, poor Megaman X had dealt with something triggering his PTSD. Which, he didn’t want to speak about, but it was, indeed, bad.
“How long did you wait until you just told me?” Xev asked, his curiosity growing as the seconds passed the duo.
“Just… a few months-.” Zero responded in a slightly coy tone. A little blush dusting on his cheeks, feeling embarrassed that he kept it to himself for quite a while. He knew Alia would wanna tell Iris and Iris would then gossip. He wasn’t wanting that to happen. He really wanted this to be kept between him and Xev.
X’s cheeks then grew red knowing of this new information, however, which broke his gaze with his beloved and hid his face within his hands. Which definitely made Zero smile at how endearing Xev can be with his embarrassed face. The feeling of that kind of embarrassment isn’t always the greatest in the moment. But to Zero, he could never not see how adorable his beloved bluebird always is. Especially when wanting to give him gifts for Christmas.
He placed a hand on Xev’s shoulder, making the other look up at him, his blush still making his cheeks very much red like Zero’s crimson armor. The one he never wears, but even if X sometimes misses it, he really does love seeing Zero in black.
Zero’s eyes relaxed into a half lidded smiling gaze, one the Neo Blue Bomber always loves, and the one gaze and smile the Midnight Hunter always only gives to X and X alone.
“I thought you could use a distraction anyway.” He spoke softly, rubbing X’s shoulder and then his back a little.
X Xev nodded, “I think I could use it. Thank you, Phoenix.”
And with a flash of light, they were gone and alone, teleporting to the sky above their beloved Mega City. Poor Xev had nearly been startled as he nearly fell but Zero had him tightly in his arms, Xev activating his wings after his Phoenix had activated his the second he brought them out here. Loving gazes exchanged, this was something Zero always done, but the Blue Sovereign Angel appreciated the gesture nonetheless.
Soon thereafter, however, Zero flew and guided X towards a direction they never usually go. At least, not anywhere specific than the places they always went, or even outside of Mega City. It was distinctively clear that he was being taken somewhere unfamiliar, but beautiful. They flew and flew across the semi cloudy sky, the stars still shone and the full moon being bright.
However, the clouds were becoming darker and the weather was becoming less clear. Xev could swear he felt a little cold snowflake land upon his nose. Feeling the chill of the winter air with the frozen little crystal, seeing and feeling more as they flew towards a snowy mountain.
But it was one of legend within the country of Glockthain, or the entire continent of the Ageless Dominion ever.
Truly, this was Misty Marvelous Mountain. But what was beyond the peaks and heavy snowfall that brought Xev to a feeling of awe. There were lights! And houses, with one being in the middle. One seemingly so important, it seemed like city hall, or just an important house overall to this little village they spotted. It seemed hustling and bustling and Christmas music played there, they could hear it! It glowed much like the aurora borealis. Then it dawned on Xev. Are they in the North Pole?? Are they somewhere where the source of Aurora Borealis may be? So many possibilities he could think of, even if they weren’t logical in the very least, it gave Xev the wonder of Christmas he was looking for.
Xev could barely form any words at all, too speechless until Zero broke the silence with his soft and low voice, “I happened upon seeing this on a solo mission one day and I thought you might want to as well see it too. It’ll be our little secret.”
X still couldn’t speak until he embraced his samurai, “Thank you, Zero…” he said softly as the Midnight Ripper hugged him back.
As the embrace ended, however, the look of guilt shown on X’s face again, and Zero continued to smile. His hand tucked under his boyfriend’s chin and lifted his gaze to meet his own.
“It’s okay, Blue Jay… Having you will always be enough.”
Xevdex finally smiled back as their moment of tenderness had them close into an embrace once more, but with a kiss as the lights shone from the mysterious town below. As if the event had come in time for their kiss, fireworks faintly popped and shone brightly below them as they enjoyed their early Christmas gift together.
