"You say Dan Feng was merely your previous reincarnation...
...how then do you still possess the power of the high elder?"
"As I expected... Dan Feng... you have returned... hahahaha..."
"Do not repeat the mistakes of a past life in this one."
Dan Heng was exhausted.
But he didn't just feel tired. After the visit to Miss Bailu, and the multiple assasination attempts, his mind was racing with memories and feelings he couldn't bury in the way he wanted. Turns out you couldn't just forget everything and everyone involved in your past life.
His only goal right now was to get to bed, knowing that he didn't have the strength to run into anyone right now. Not even into you, his partner in this life. It wasn't like he didn't want to see you. He was just afraid that he wouldn't be able to handle his emotions anymore when he was met with your caring gaze.
As soon as he gets into the passenger car though, you almost crash into him. Before the boy could even react your eyes already brighten at his sight and your arms immediately wrap him up in a hug. Air catches in his throat, the sudden warmth of your presence immediately breaking down his resolve. The exhaustion hits him again, and tears well up in his eyes even though it was only a simple hug!
After a few seconds that felt like hours for Dan Heng, you try pulling away from the hug to properly greet him, but to your surprise he wraps his arms around your waist and pulls you into him, burying his face in your neck so you couldn't see the look on his face. In utter confusion to his unusual clingy reaction, you could only let out a confused noise.
"Dan Heng, are you alright?" you whisper carefully, realising that something must be wrong. He pulls away but only a little, looking at you with misty eyes. He only manages to shake his head, frantically trying to hold the tears back. You could feel how heavy the thing he was carrying must be, so you do the only thing you can think of and take his hand and gently pull him into his room.
Feeling relieved to not to have his feelings exposed for everyone walking into the hallway, he finally lets himself cry in the safety of your arms.
Dan Heng's grip on you was tight, like he was afraid you would disappear as soon as he let go, and in response you hold him just as tight signaling that *he was safe and you were here*. His face was buried in your shoulder again and his tears were staining your shirt but you really couldn't care less.
You just keep holding him, so he won't fall apart.
He doesn't know how or when, crying way too much to think about anything other than the comfort your presence gave him, but you two were on his makeshift bed now and you were still holding him tight.
You started whispering sweet words of comfort into his ear, not knowing what was wrong and not prying either, just reminding him that you loved him and that he was precious to you.
"I'm here, its okay."
"You are safe."
"Shhh, I love you."
After a while he was able to calm down. His breathing turning steadier and his choking sobs turning into silent tears. Dan Heng looked up at you, you were cradling his face and your eyes looked so warm. He leaned into your touch.
You smiled at him softly and warmth bloomed in his chest. "Is it okay now?" You ask him and he still only nods. Too tired to really speak.
You didn't pry about what happened, you knew. Moments like these weren't exactly unusual, especially since the mission on the Loufu. He was glad to have you in moments where his mind wouldn't keep quiet and you never failed to comfort him.
In the past he would often be worried about burdening you, but after thousands of reassuring words and kisses from you, he knew that wasn't the case. You really loved him and cared for him. That was more worth to him than anything else in this world.
Pushing him out of his thoughts, your soft lips touch his temple with a gentle kiss. A soft smile finds its way on his face and he knows he is safe.
He is home.
