Work Text:
When Satoru received the news of the Winter Prom his first thoughts were “Who's half brained, half chewed, and half cooked idea was to do a winter ball? A Winter PROM sorry. IN JAPAN." Since it was a school and social event Satoru couldn’t skip it, but his plan was to blend into the crowd, smile and chat a bit and then leave as soon is he can. That was the plan but as the nature of plans it didn’t happen that way. It all went downhill when Suguru was running towards him out of breath.
“Satoru.” Suguru is panting.
“I can’t find Shoko anywhere.”
“Cheezy.”
“If we can’t find her you have to substitute.”
Since there was no fucking way, that Satoru would dance the opening dance for the prom, now two of them are running up and down in the hallways.
"Shoko! Shoko? Shoko?!!! Where are you?" She needs to be here, her and Suguru supposed to open the prom. Jujutsu High is the host institution, and they were practicing it for the last month. She can't disappear into thin air.
They have been searching for the last 15 minutes in every classroom, every dorm and even in the women's bathroom (in the middle of saying multiple excuses), but to no avail. They are running out of time, and he can see the terror in Suguru's eyes too.
"Shoko!" A loud cry from Suguru.
"Shoko!" An even more desperate scream from Satoru.
There is only 5 minutes left until the opening and they run out of places and ideas. They are standing in front of the door of the hall.
“Satoru, you have to do it.” Suguru’s desperate.
“Like hell no!” Satoru is both nervous and angry.
“SATORU!” Suguru is annoyed and anxious which is a rare sight to be seen.
“We can’t fucking cancel it!” Which is the truth, but it still couldn’t help the fact that Satoru is scared as hell.
“Suguru.” Satoru takes a breath in.
“You own me one until the end of your life.”
“Anything.” Suguru’s shoulder visibly relaxes.
Satoru thinks this will be the worst choice of his life, but he has to role with it, counting back the three minutes until the start.
They step inside of the hall together. Satoru’s mind is single focused on two sentences: “I’m ready. /I’m not ready./ I’m ready. /I’m not ready./ I’m ready. /I’m not ready./ Why is he the cursed one who has to substitute? He shouldn’t be the one standing here.”
Vienesse Waltzer. They are standing on the side of the dancefloor wearing their chosen colour. Satoru in a white costume made tuxedo with radiating light blue highlights on his cufflinks, on his shawl lapel, on his cummerbund and on his pocket square. Suguru wearing a dark blue, how the midnight sky would look like with a drop of ink of Satoru’s eyes. The highlights are the inverse of Satoru’s tuxedo, an aesthetically pleasing pop of white here and there.
The time is up. The music queues and from the edge of the dancefloor they are traveling to the middle of it. Gracefully as two heirs to the throne, gliding through the surface of the floor. They stop in the middle, halt, turn to face each other and Suguru gently picks up Satoru’s right hand.
A four-beat pause before they start it. Satoru’s panicking inside. His posture is flawless, only Suguru can pick up on his nerves. He looks him in the eyes, and his eyes tell. That he only needs to follow, like a choreography of fight, which they practiced so many times before, but much harmless. Just give him trust.
The pause ends. Suguru turns his head to the left side and steps forward. Satoru mimics it. The basic step.
In the short span of three minutes Suguru haphazardly listed all the steps which are essentials to the routine and Satoru tried to memorize them, but he still stumbles. A bit of hesitation, his step is a bit off the rhythm, but he manages to step back. Suguru squeezes his hand and his back, but it feels like a reinforcement, to just let himself be guided and let loose. Soften to his leading hands.
Four times, back and forth, back and forth. Satoru feels like he is being swinged, it feels like he is a kid again at a playground. It’s a kind and gentle feeling. If he wouldn’t be a bit uptight and frightened from the routine, he thinks he could genuinely enjoy this.
The next step. Suguru is holding and guiding his outstretched left hand right way forward and stepping his right foot to the right. A quarter turn. Satoru’s rotating and with the sudden change of direction he is grabbing the fabric of Suguru’s tuxedo as someone who is holding onto his dear life, but he manages to pick up the step faster than the first one. Four of them, which brings them back to the starting point, and they repeat the sequence again. They did it once before so this time their moves are getting better in sync.
Satoru knows he should let loose but after this sequence there is a new step, a hard one. He is quite nervous; he can't get it out of his head. It's not like you can magically know the steps by reading the residuals of a cursed energy. This is built on trust and basic human responses which he can sometimes lack.
He knows he needs to relax to be able to carry out. They need to cover a long distance with it, from one side to the other side of the hall while turning. The step depends on the gravity point of the two dancers and how they can hold it in the middle without losing balance and speed.
The half turn. A 180° turn which starts backward for him covered with three steps. Suguru is holding his shoulder blade, and the grip is so firm, magnetised to his body. Satoru has chronically cold hands, but Suguru is the opposite. His palms are always warm and ready to melt you out. It’s like a home lit by a fireplace in a snowy winter night. His hands are calming.
Suguru steps forward with his right leg, and Satoru steps out of his way, left leg right side back to start the turn. They are quickly picking up speed. He switched of Infinity for the whole dance, and he still feels like he is floating above the dancefloor. The people around them disappear and all of them become a blur. Time is non-existent, it could have been two seconds or two hours for him, it feels the same. He never felt so easy, so weightless, so free. His face turned outwards from Suguru, but his Six Eyes tell, that Suguru's hair is floating in the air, and he is radiating gracefulness. They are radiating gracefulness.
They are flowing and Satoru’s spinning mind and body feels high from the serotonin. He feels all his neuron endings tinkering, he feels all the atoms in his body. The half-turns are followed by pivot turns, fleckerls, closed and open changes but all of them feels dim. The only thing that keeps him on the dancefloor and in the moment are the firm and hugging arms of Suguru. He feels like he became a part of him, a new limb.
Satoru only comes to his senses when the routine is done, the music has ended, and the storm of applause welcomes them. Suguru’s holding his right hand and they are bowing together, greeting the claps. His smile reaches his eyes and he think he’s gone crazy from all the overwhelming happiness. He looks at Suguru and he is met with the same smile on his face.
And Suguru’s purple eyes. Satoru’s heart is racing again even after finishing the dance. What is this new feeling? What is this new glimmer in Suguru’s eyes he sees? It feels like he is looking at a new person, a side that he hasn’t seen before.
After the opening dance, the dancefloor rapidly filling up with people to start the prom and they are leaving it. They are heading to the hallway to get a short breezer.
Satoru’s hands are still shaking a bit and Suguru holds them.
“I never thought that a dance would be the one thing that make you lose your posture.”
And for once in his life Satoru is lost on words. He could always say a funny comeback, a rebut, to take away the edge of it. But still, he is trying his best.
“Sorry but while mastering Six Eyes and Infinity ballroom dancing was not on the top of my priority list.” He is fuming a bit, and you can see the effort he puts into not stumping his feet alongside with it.
Suguru is letting out a sweet chuckle and putting his right hand behind his head scratching it.
“You know, my mother used to be a dancer, so I gradually picked up some steps.”
Satoru’s head suddenly filled with all the cute moments and pictures about Suguru dancing with his mom, at 3, at 9 and at 12 years old. He is growing up before his eyes, but he has the same tender smile on his face, swinging to 1-2-3. Suguru still wears the same smile.
“Yaaaaah, but it’s still cruel that I needed to learn it this way.”
Satoru is still complaining but his lips are making a silly little pout on his face. He totally lost control over all of his coyness. But he can’t keep track of everything while Suguru is standing before him, like prince charming and the biggest comforting plushie combined. Can he keep him forever?
“Satoru, you were perfect on the dancefloor.”
Suguru’s eyes are honest. Satoru hadn’t realized it until now, that he was so down bad for him. But with the high of their performance and Suguru’s charming and funny replies he is melting like ice on the sun. How is he supposed to be the strongest when he can’t even tear away his sight from the bedazzling gaze of Suguru?
He tries to break it, but Suguru slides his hand on his wrist to the rushing pulse of his heart. And of course, he can feel it. And now there is a new light in his eyes, an even more tempting. Is he actually playing with Satoru and turning his own personality traits against him? This is just so not fair regarding all the circumstances.
Satoru has muscles. He is lean but he has muscles. Then what the fuck are his knees even doing? Giving up? Right fucking now?
“I told you, you can lean on me.” And this sounds like more of a whisper only for them.
When did Suguru become that soft? Where was this side until now, why was he hiding it? And why is he using it now? It is not helping Satoru at all to stay sane.
And suddenly he realises it that Suguru has soft skin, and flowery smell and fairies are tinkling in his laugh. He knows he is gay, but he didn’t think he is that gay. Six Eyes be damned. Satoru thinks he has a bilateral cerebral hemorrhage.
And Suguru picks up his chin.
“Is there everything alright?” He is genuinely worried. Cute. Shit.
“Yeah of course I’m alright. I think it’s still the influence of the dance.” Satoru tries to play it off, but Suguru knows him to well.
“You are lying Satoru.”
/Yeah, no shit Sherlock./ But he can’t tell him out of the blue that he wants to kiss him so bad he is willing to give up one eye of the six. Bro. (Satoru knows it doesn’t work like that, but the intention still counts.)
“You are gay panicking.”
/Sorry but the WHAT now? Did he really call him out like that? Did he?/
There is a pause of a breath Satoru registers. Is Suguru staggering?
“What if I tell you, I know what you are thinking of?”
Satoru is flabbergasted. There is no way nor in heaven nor in hell that he /knows/.
“With all of your mighty power and you are still so oblivious Satoru.”
Suguru breaks a half-hearted laugh.
“I love the fact that even with all of your abilities you have always been blind for me Satoru.”
Suguru steps one foot closer and suddenly any distance between them dissolves. Satoru is still fighting for his life and trying to take control of his breathing, but Suguru doesn't make it easier. Satoru's hand is trapped between them and Suguru gently caresses the pulse point on Satoru's wrist with his thumb. Suguru tries to calm down Satoru's crazy heartbeat.
"Easy tiger." What an obnoxious sentence and Satoru is still frozen to make a clap back.
"Would it be crazy if I'd tell you I have been harbouring the same thoughts for weeks? Would it be crazy if I tell you that anytime your skin touched mine, I felt the same electric waves you are experiencing now?"
Suguru is telling the truth, but Satoru's mind is so freaking blank that he can't even register any meaning of the words. He only understands that Suguru got closer and now he can feel the warm flowing breath of his words on his skin. And also, Suguru’s purple eyes, soft and honey-warmed. Satoru didn't believe in any god but now he was praying to anyone to end this one way or another or the strongest sorcerer of their time is going to die with a heart attack caused by being too damn gay.
"Satoru, can I kiss you?" The only word that Satoru's mind register is "kiss" and he feels like a deer trapped in the headlight but also like a kid on the morning of Christmas Day running to open his gift.
"Yeah." This is the only faint word that sounds like more of a breath than anything actually articulated that Satoru's mushy brain could master.
And Suguru does not wait for another confirmation, does not hesitate, and closes the non-existent space between them.
Their lips are sealed.
Satoru feels like a drowning person suddenly reaching the surface. Everything suddenly becomes crystal clear and he feels everything. His heart calms down, his head stops buzzing and his ears aren't ringing anymore. Like sweeping down the ice from a frozen window and seeing winter wonderland. He is in the moment, and he doesn't want to leave.
Suguru has soft lips and smooth movements. He puts his hand behind Satoru's neck, but he doesn't surge forward. He is also savouring the moment. It is a sweet kiss, no rush or bite to it. Like Satoru’s favourite candy.
Suguru is the first one to pull away, but Satoru is the first one to say a word.
"Yeah." His voice is sterner now and the questions from all-over his face have disappeared. His eyes are shining like tanzanites, like blue diamonds. Satoru knocks their heads together.
"I think I would like to do this again." Suguru flashes a content smile.
"Maybe if you learn to stand on your legs again, we can talk about it." And both of them are chuckling.
A loud clash of a closing door behind them. Both turn to the way of the sound. And suddenly Shoko is there.
"Oh, fucking finally, Merry Christmas you insufferable homosexuals."
And all three of them bend if half from the outburst of laughs.
