Chapter 1: the petty theft

Chapter Text

I've been running.

running for a long time

Nonstop.

From a lot of things, basically everything

To me there's no escape there, no lit-up arrow telling me the right direction to go.

Nope, just me, just me alone, no one to help.

"Fuck" I said to myself, while the beeping sound of a store theft detector went off.
"HEY KID" a voice yells to me, I was just thinking of booking it. But most likely I wouldn't get out of this one. I turn to see a man speed walking towards me. My stomach flips while I just stand there.
"You stealing?" the employee grabs my arm tight, way too tight. At this point it was turning into a scene
"Hey, let go of me!! You're hurting my arm" I Yelled at him trying to escape his grasp, but it didn't work he just held me harder. He started patting me down. he felt something in my pocket.
"What's this?" he said, pulling out a chocolate bar.
"Great, now what am I going to eat?" I thought to myself.
“FUCK YOU” I yell, to him, proudly not the best idea but it's the best I could say.
The man didn't say anything he just dragged me to a security office where some security police were sitting in chairs on their phone, not doing their job at all.
"What the fuck are you two doing? I just caught this kid stealing and you fuckers are on your phone" the man says to the security, they quickly dart their eyes to me. They put their phone down.
"What she tried to steal "one of the security askes. The man pulls out the chocolate bar that I had in my pocket.
"YOUR GOIGN TO CALL THE FUCKING COPS BECUSE I STOLE A LITTLE CANDY BAR-" the man cut me of
"Shut up, thief" the man said the security looked at each other before one of them took a deep breath and said, "Sorry kid, but we have to call the cops, even if it's as petty for stealing a candy bar."

The employee smiled and took out his phone dialing the cops. Almost everything after that was just white noise until I got to juvie. I mean I've been to juvie before, but it just seemed different. Like I don't know this place at all even though I memorized every inch of it.
“Name” a women asked on the other side of the desk I was sitting at.
I don't want to answer, because if I did, they would know. They would know that I'm the runaway that a lot of people have been talking about and searching for. But I know that I have to, or they will make me y/n, y/m/n, y/l/n” I said, fiddling with my thumbs. The lady typed on her keyboard. Her eyes slightly widened, and she grabbed the phone that was on her desk dialing a number.
"Hi, I have Ms. Y/l/n, y/n with me, I'm wondering what to do with her, considering her situation" the lady said in a whisper to the person on the phone while she peeked at me "Ok, thank you bye." the lady hung up the phone. She pointed her body back to me. She just kind of looked around awkwardly saying nothing.
“Aren't you supposed to be asking me questions right now?” I asked leaning in my chair.
“Well, um there-” before she said anything else and a man with a suit came down the hallway. He smiled at the woman and stopped next to her and then looked at me.
“Hello Ms. y/l/n, I am Mr. Andrew, pleasure to meet you” he said, putting out his hand for a handshake and other arm gripping a file he had in his hands. I looked at his hand funny before deciding to shake it. After we were done shaking hands, I brought my hand to my lap and fitted with the wrinkles in my pants “Well We don't have much time so I'm going to ask you to come with me please.”
“Urm, ok” I said and got up from my seat. He started walking down the hall and I followed. I Was confused about what was going on but, I think I had an idea. We stopped at a door, somewhere near the end of the hallway. He put his hand in his pocket and started fiddling in his pocket to find keys. I could tell he was struggling because he had to keep digging and he didn't have the key yet.so I waited and prayed for a fucking Miracal that he would find his keys, before I fucking turn to dust. He finally grabs the keys out of his pocket, the keys I was longing for him to find.

He went through the keys and picked the one that went to his office. He pushed the key into the doorknob and twisted it. When it clicked, he took out the key and put it back in his pocket before opening the door that led to what seemed to be an office or interrogation room.
“After you” the man said, putting out his hand to direct me inside. I looked at him and then the room. I took a big gulp, for me not knowing what is going to happen scares me. I sighed and walked in the room taking a seat on one of the 3 chairs in there. When I sat down, he was already in the room and in the middle of closing the door. He closed and locked the door before taking a seat from the chair across from me. He had placed the file that he had earlier on the table and opened it showing a bunch of paperwork.

“So, Ms. y/l/n, how are you” he said as he skims through the paperwork.
I knew he just wanted to play nice and shove me in a cell the second I messed up. I’ve been around people like this, and I didn't want to say a word. I sat there and didn't say anything. He looked up from the pile of papers and looked at me, but I looked away not wanting to make eye contact. I hate cops that try to act all nice and shit, like I was falling for that.
“Look y/n, I'm not a cop, I'm here to help and talk to you, for a second-”
“And how do I know you're not a cop trying to lock me up for the rest of my life?” I asked leaning back in on my chair.
“I'm a social worker, your here to get you a new family and I need to ask you some questions” he said.
“I don't want a new family, and I don't want to answer any of your questions” I said putting my feet on the table.
“sure” He started out and looked back at the papers “ok let's get started with your little origin story” he said trying to make a cheesy joke “you had straight A’s from the 3rd grade all the way till the 7th, you were deemed the best kid at your school, and the one a lot of people said that you were most likely going to Harvard. Well, that's until your parents got locked up for grand theft, 1st degree murder, and illegal drugs. After that you were put in foster care until you were taken in by the Rivera family. When you got there you were rude, out of control and very stubborn. When they were fed up with you, they threatened to send you back to foster care. And instead of that you ran away. Weeks later you were arrested for stealing a pop tart from a gas station. You repeatedly get new families and run away to get later arrested. Mhmmm…..,let's see, 7 times not counting this time, making it 8 and you were caught stealing a candy bar from Walmart. Personally, it is a horrible place to steal from. And all that is leading us to now.” he looked up at he “how did I do?” he said in a cocky mood.
I stared at him for a second, mouth slightly open in shock.
“It says all that?” I asked him to take my feet off the table.
“Well, it says more but yeah it's a sum up of it” he smirked. I looked at the floor with my head hung low and limp thinking of all the shit that happened and the shit I put myself through “let me ask you something” he asked.
“You just did” I said looking up and him.
He chuckled “you're funny, but why-.......... What happened, to make you change” he closed the file and looked at me with worried eyes.
For me the room shrunk, and my lungs got tight while my mouth got dry and his words became echoed. I listened to the questions and searched through my mind for an answer. But I couldn't really find one, all I found were excuses, and petty lies that I made myself believe to make me feel like it wasn't my problem.
“I-I don't know” I said everything went back to normal and my thoughts became clear, and I realized.

It might be all my fault.

“I guess I-........I don't know” I said feeling my face heating up and my hands becoming clammy.
He licked his lips and said “you're going to have to cooperate this time, because this is your last chance.” he said, I bit my lip thinking how all this was going to turn out “we have a new guardian for you, if you're willing to except- well you have no choice, all I'm saying is dont run away, again.” he said opening the fine again to the last page takin in out a paper passing it to me “His name Is William Gold, he's 24, lives alone and wants to help you out with your situation.”

“Why the hell does everybody say, 'my situation', JUST SAY 'ME'” I said looking down at the paper. It has his face and some information on it. I stared at the piece of paper looking at his picture “he lives alone? And he wants to help me?” it is said, grabbing the piece of paper “maybe he wants to just help himself” I said, sliding the paper back to the man, he raised a brow and shook his head slightly with his eyes while putting the piece of paper back in the file and closing it.
“Can no one help you?” he asked crossing his arms and placing them on the table.
“I mean, a man that lives alone though?” I said as a joke but-

I don't know-

“You don't trust peopl- men that much. Do you?”
“No, that's one thing my mom taught me” I said smirking slightly.
“And you know your mom- you know what never mind, but let's wrap this up, because you have a new parent to go home with, in a …hour” he said looking at is watch.
“First of all, he will NEVER be my parent, and this quick. Aren't I supposed to go through a whole process?”
“Well yes but, since you have been through it so many times, we decided to just skip it and give you a home right away” he said.
“Who’s ‘WE’ because I definitely didn't have a say.”
“Well social services and a lot of other important people. And of course, you don't have a say in it.” he said getting up. I got up as well blabbering why I don't want to go and how i would rather stay in juvie.
“Well, if you really want to come back to this horrid place, well …...do what you usually do. But this is your last chance. So, use it wisely” he said, opening the door. I walked out and he walked out, and he walked out behind me locking the room. We walked down the hallway until we reached the room where I was originally transferred to. I sat back in my seat and the woman looked at him with a ‘so what now’ expression. The man turned away before stopping and turning to face me.
“OH, before I forget to tell you and lose my job, you will have a social worker come to your house every other week for 'checkups'. The better you seem and do, the less visits. It will most likely be me or if you're lucky someone else” he said smiling and then turning around once more and walking away. My eyes followed him till he turned a corner and disappeared. When I looked at the women that was asking me questions, she was stood up with keys in her hands.
“Please get up Ms. y/l/n” she said, opening the holding cell. I got up and Walked into my holding cell. When I sat on the cold glazed brick bench. Looking up at the security camera. That was pointing at me. She closed and locked the cell and walked back to her desk.

I felt cold and lost, so I closed my eyes and thought of another new life given to me once more. Slowly my thoughts faded, and I grew tired. The light passing through my eyelids started getting dimmer and dimmer till it was black, and my body became out of my control and calm. Who knew falling asleep on brick could be so calming.
