Work Text:

Rui was not having a good day. She hadn't slept at night, only managing to fall asleep at 3 then waking up less than an hour later to a nightmare. She screwed up an invention for their next show, so Rui now had to scrap that idea because she didn't have enough time. She skipped breakfast again, simply felt sick thinking about eating. Tsukasa had to take care of Saki this morning, so no walking with him to school. Mizuki wasn't attending school that day, but said they'd swing by at the end to go to the store with Rui.

Just 8 hours and she could be with them, no pressure right? It'll be fine.

Or so she thought. School sucked, it always does. Rui got stuck in drama between girls on the stair case, so she didn't reach the rooftop, forcing her to attend class with Tsukasa. That was fine, she loved Tsukasa, but the teacher separated them across the room. If she said she didn't feel like sobbing she'd be a liar.

She had no lunch to eat, no Tsukasa to sit with either. He had things to attend. That's fine, Rui wasn't starting to feel stressed and fuzzy around the corners of her mind, no, that'd be silly. She was grown, she was mature and she could make it through one basic school day.

Rui wanted to go home and make a pillow fort to sob in as she got in Mizuki's car. It was messy as usual, but it was loud. She acted like it was fine, it was fine, everything was fine. Suddenly Mizuki tapped her shoulder.

"Hey Rui? Were uh.. at the store, you zoning out again?"

Rui was quick with a response. She didn't remember what she said, but it seemed convincing enough for now because before she knew it they were in the store going to pick out snacks.

Mizuki tried to talk to Rui but she didn't give a response. These lights were too bright, how did anyone function here?

"Ru.. ui... R.."

The talking is too loud. The cash registers are beeping off beat to the fast tempo in her head.

"Rui.. are yo.. me..? Ru.."

The talking. It's so loud. The songs on the radio is so loud. It's all so loud make it stop.

The thing that sets her off though is a light touch on the shoulder. Mizuki.

Suddenly, Rui began wailing uncontrollably. She felt herself drop fast, so she shoved 3 fingers in her mouth and bit down hard, wailing more at the pain.

"Okay okay sweetie c'mon lets get you back to my car-"

Mizuki said hurriedly, ignoring the stares from others as they rush Rui out to their car.

"Okay shh shh you're alright baby, too overwhelming hmm?"

Mizuki said hugging Rui in the back seat, luckily it was big enough to make it so Rui was on their lap. A bit cramped yes, but it would have to do for now. They rocked Rui back and forth, shushing her to try and get the baby to calm back down.

After a few minutes of Rui hyperventilating and wailing, she quieted down to sniffles and whimpers.

"There we go baby nice job, that was a lot huh?"

Rui nodded before babbling and almost getting hysterical again.

"B-Bad day rweally b-bad bad bad b-bad--"

"Hey shh shh, I know little one I know"

Mizuki said, rocking her again until she calmed.

"Y'think you can sit all comfy back here while we drive home? I'm sure u need some place better than my silly old car"

Rui giggled softly and nodded, letting Mizuki buckle them up in the back seat. Rui babbled complaints about not sitting in front, only to be countered with "babies can sit up front!" which only made her feel smaller.

Mizuki made sure to drive slower than usual, the baby had a tendency to get car sick so they didn't want a sick baby too.

The two eventually got home, Rui being unbuckled by Mizuki and picked up. Rui was lanky, really light too. Mizuki would have to get the baby something to eat, she must be starving.

They brought Rui inside, sitting her in their room on their bed comfortably. Mizuki got out a pacifier they made for Rui, as well as a small rattle toy to keep her busy. She took both happily, Mizuki having to hold the pacifier in her mouth for a bit before the baby spit it out. Once she got a good rhythm on the paci, they spoke again.

"Alright hun, I'm gonna go get some clothes for you okay? You shouldn't have to stay in your big girl clothes any longer I say!"

The two of them giggled, Mizuki going to their closet to grab Rui a onesie and fuzzy little socks they had in the back for her. Rattling along with other giggles and babbles could be heard, signs Rui was playing with her toy.

Soon Mizuki came back and smiled, beginning to undress Rui and get her changed. Once she was all changed, she seemed like a very tired baby.

"We getting sleepy now little one?" Mizuki said softly, picking Rui up and bouncing her on their hip. Rui didn't answer, only babbling softly and yawning, her paci almost falling out from how lax she was going.

Mizuki chuckled and bounced her while walking to the kitchen, taking out some formula and mixing together angels milk to put her to bed with something in her tummy.

They brought Rui back to bed and layed down with her, Rui resting on their body. Mizuki gently pulled the paci from the little one and slipped the bottle in her mouth. Rui sucked happily and drank, turning away when it was about half empty. Mizuki didn't say a word about it, it was better than they were expecting her to drink. They rocked Rui, humming softly as she fell asleep on them. Mizuki soon sleeping afterwards, the two finally at peace.
