Work Text:

Eloise Rafferty had always considered herself a strong and independent woman, but the scars of her past still lingered deep within her. The memories of her ex-husband's abuse haunted her, resurfacing at the most unexpected and unwelcome of times.

One evening, while Eloise was helping with the evening rounds at Nonnatus House, a sudden noise in the hallway triggered a vivid flashback. The sound of a slamming door transported her back to the days when Edmond's temper knew no bounds. The swift slam of the door to their flat had started it all. Edmond had lost a bet to a man he worked with and yet somehow he’d twisted it in his mind that she was to blame for his losses.

She tried to be polite and show him kindness and sympathy, offering to hear about his day, but talking was not something he’d been interested in. He came in hurling accusations, placing blame where no blame should have fallen, and when Eloise denied having a part in any of it, he’d smacked her with the open face of his palm.

That first slap stung, even now, as if she were reliving it on a loop. For six months after that, he’d whaled on her for any minor inconvenience he experienced. How she hadn’t seen this side of him before they were wed was a mystery that continued to keep her up at night. But of course, he wouldn’t have shown her, not until she no longer had a way out.

Trixie, perceptive as always, noticed Eloise's sudden distress, how she’d frozen in place, unblinking for longer than was usual. She rushed to her side, gently touching her arm and whispering, "Eloise, it's alright. You're safe. You’re in Nonnatus House. Take deep breaths and focus on my voice."

Trixie's soothing presence and calming words helped ground Eloise in the present, slowly pulling her out of the painful memories that had taken her away. As she returned to the reality of the moment, Eloise's muscles relaxed and she turned and clung to Trixie's reassurance, allowing herself to be wrapped tightly in her arms. In her comforting embrace, Eloise felt her heart rate gradually returning to normal.

Tears welled up in Eloise's eyes as she finally found her voice. "Thank you, Trixie. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Trixie's warm smile and empathetic eyes served to calm her further until she almost felt like herself again. "You never have to go through this alone, Eloise. We're a family here at Nonnatus House, and we're here for each other, always."

Eloise nodded, finding strength in Trixie's compassion. Though the scars of her past would never completely fade, with Trixie by her side, and the support of her friends at Nonnatus House, she knew she could face whatever challenges the future held.
