broken masks and fixing problems

Summary:

"WHAT," Scarab hissed, "Do you MEAN I have to live with ...them?"

Instead of being sent to clean up the Time Room, Scarab is sent to Fionna and Cake's city with no housing, no money, and no people he knows (besides the ones he, you know, tried to murder.)

Chapter 1: punishment and packing

Chapter Text

What?” Scarab hissed, stepping back, “What do you mean I have to live with THEM?”

“Sorry mate, ‘s what the council decided. I’m just the newsbreaker!” Orbo said. He probably would’ve shrugged if he had arms.

Scarab knew well that Orbo was on the council; he was there when the most recent council members had been elected. (He didn’t make it, most likely because of his… reputation in the workspace.)

“But- I- You are well aware that I tried to kill them.” Scarab stuttered out, clenching his hands at his knees.

“I think that that’s kinda the point, mate,” Orbo said, unmoving.

“...When does the punishment come into effect, Orbo?” Scarab said, his voice a low growl.

“In, um, hmm.. about 20 minutes,” Orbo grinned.

Scarab started to say something, presumably another protest, but decided against it. He knew it wouldn’t get him anywhere, so there wasn’t much of a point trying to go against his consequences. “I’m going to go to my room to pack,” Scarab said as he walked stiffly off into the hallway.

Scarab pressed down his freshly-washed suit, then turned to look at himself in the mirror. He grimaced at his face, staring at his yellow eyes, black slits marking his pupils. A black line traced between eyes. Scarab’s teeth were knife-sharp, perfectly white with no chips to be seen.

“Where did I put my mask…” Scarab mumbled, filing through the stack of clothes he’d packed. It was odd, he hadn’t remembered taking off his mask. He never did, unless it was to threaten someone or if it had been destroyed. (Which it had, to be fair. In the fight with Cake and Fionna it had shattered, but he’d gotten a spare one afterwards for his trial. His injuries took a while to heal, but if he covered them with neat suits and wrapped limbs, nobody batted an eye. Not that anybody would have batted an eye to begin with. Nobody cared much about him, and he didn’t care much about anybody.)

After a good ten minutes of searching, Scarab found a note taped on the front of his door. From Orbo, of course.

Just by the way, the council says you can’t have your mask so I took it away for you. Don’t bother trying to get another one, by the way. See you probably never!

-Orbo

You’ve got to be kidding me.” Scarab growled, covering his face with one hand self-consciously and crushing the paper with his other.
