as luck would have it

Summary:

“Alright, perfectionist. So what are you gonna do with this?” Aeri looks at the small vial of liquid and back at Jimin with a glint in her eyes.

Catching that suspicious look, Jimin raises her brow sceptically. “What do you have up your sleeve?”

Smiling mischievously, Aeri leans in closer to Jimin and whispers. “I don’t know, I think maybe it’s time to act on your huge crush on the Ravenclaw Quidditch star seeker which has been going on for the longest time ever huh.”

Or Jimin is persuaded to use her liquid luck to ask Minjeong out on a date.

Work Text:

It is not an unusual sight to see the Gryffindor house prefect sit in the library for days poring over thick books, especially when the said girl is taking her O.W.L.s this year. It is, however, silly of her to be researching the uses and effects of the potion, Felix Felicis excessively. You see, Jimin had just won a small vial of liquid luck from Professor Slughorn for concocting the almost perfect Draught of Living Death in her potions class earlier this week. A small feat from the best potions maker of her year, really.

You may ask, is this potion going to be tested during her Potions exam for O.W.L.s? Probably not. And if not, then why on earth is Jimin wasting her time researching so intensively on this? The culprit will then of course be none other than her best friend, Aeri.

“Yo, this is so crazy! You're the first to do it since Harry Potter!” Aeri proudly gives a huge pat to Jimin as they walk out of the dungeon classroom.

Waving her hands humbly, Jimin shrugs. “I feel like I could have done a little better with juicing the Sopophorous bean.”

“I. Do. Not. Have. A. Huge. Crush. On. Her.”

“Oh hi Minjeong!”

Jimin immediately jumps away from Aeri and looks around.

“Gotcha,” Aeri winks and leaves Jimin a blushing mess as she trudges after her best friend, cursing under her breath.

Jimin first laid eyes on Kim Minjeong when the second year Ravenclaw made the house Quidditch team as the seeker. Jimin is not one to be captivated by the sport but she was enthralled by the younger. Minjeong is normally cool and focused during games but she can be so freaking adorable off the pitch! And her million dollar smile? Jimin swears it is the best thing ever and so who can really blame her for developing a crush?

Being a year older and in a different house, it means Jimin can only catch glimpses of the Ravenclaw at hallways during breaks and occasionally, in the Great Hall during mealtimes. It was not until Aeri made friends with Yizhuo, who so happens to be Minjeong's best friend that Jimin gets to interact with the younger more often. Minjeong has always been nice to her around school, they even studied together a few times in the library although Jimin does not know why the Ravenclaw would join her there when they have a library in their common room.

And this is how Jimin ended up in the library, studying about the potion for her own usage (though not without a lot of persuasion from Aeri). To put it simply, she just needs the additional luck when she asks Minjeong out on a date.

For one, it is not Jimin to put anything in her body without knowing everything, especially the exact effects it would have on her. Two, Professor Slughorn honestly wasn’t very helpful in answering her questions down to the minute details either.

(Professor, how many drops should I take so I don't get overdosed? I can’t take the whole vial, can I? Merlin’s beard! Not too much my dear, perhaps just a few drops will do the trick!

Professor, does two drops equate to two hours of luck? I’m not the best when it comes to Arithmancy, Jimin. Although I would say a few drops may give you luck for a couple of hours. Why don’t you try it and let me know?

Professor, how will I know when the effects of the potion wears off? Oh, I promise you darling, you will know! )

Goddamn it. So how much is a few drops exactly?

After much contemplation and research, Jimin decides that she will take just three drops, not too little but also not too much. She hopes that this will give her a few hours to do something at least.

As much as Jimin hates to admit, Aeri is her best wingwoman (her only one, really). She had offered to find out Minjeong’s schedule for this Sunday (yes, they decided on a Sunday because Sunday is the seventh day of the week and seven is luc- alright you get the idea) and the Ravenclaw will be doing nothing much except studying in her common room. (A perfect match, as Aeri would say).

So here they are, both sitting in the Great Hall at their Gryffindor table, having breakfast, going through their plan for the last time.

“Alright, I will go straight to the Ravenclaw common room. Yizhuo will be there and she will get Minjeong for me.” Jimin starts reciting the plan again, hands fiddling with the vial.

“Yes, she’s in on the plan. Don’t worry, she will be there waiting for you.” Aeri nods encouragingly.

“Okay, when Minjeong comes out, I will ask her out.” Jimin looks up at Aeri for assurance.

“On a date to Hogsmeade.” Another firm nod from her wingwoman.

“On a date to Hogsmeade.” Jimin repeats and stops twirling the vial in her hand. The Gryffindor prefect takes a deep breath before uncapping and dripping three droplets into her goblet.

“Here we go,” Jimin raises her goblet and downs her drink.

“How do you feel?” Aeri asks curiously.

Jimin smiles brightly at her for a moment before responding. “Excellent!”

“Great! Now remember, just go straight to the Ravenclaw common room and Yizhuo will be there.” Aeri gets up and rounds over to Jimin’s side to give her a pat. “You can do it!”

“Yup, I can! I’m going to the Quidditch pitch!” Jimin stands and starts walking away, still smiling.

“Jimin!” Aeri yells after her.

“What?” Jimin turns and yells back.

“The Ravenclaw common room!” Aeri half-whispers, half-shouts, now acutely aware that half the people in the Great Hall are staring at them.

“I know! But I have a really good feeling about the Quidditch pitch!” Jimin shouts, blissfully oblivious.

Aeri throws her hands up when Jimin turns on her heels and leaves, skipping. Yeah, no kidding.

When Jimin downed her drink, she immediately felt this sense of calmness washing over her. The sky turned clear, the noise in the Great Hall became muffled and she could feel her pulse. A soft rhythmic thump. Slowly, she feels herself relaxing and an unbidden smile spreads across her face. There is this underlying thought that everything is going to turn out well. All thoughts of their plan flew out of the window and she just knows where exactly she needs to go.

Feeling in her best condition, she makes her way down the steps leading to the field, unaware of how her day will turn out. The Gryffindor prefect laughs to herself giddily. She does not even know if Minjeong will be there!

"Hi Jimin! What got you smiling like that?" Jimin turns to her side and she's met with the one Ravenclaw that she so wanted to meet.

"Oh hey, Minjeong! Fancy seeing you here, it's just a good day!" Jimin replies enthusiastically. She sees Minjeong holding her broom. "Are you heading to the field for Quidditch practice?"

"Yeah, sudden change of plans since Hufflepuff cancelled their training." Jimin hums.

"I like watching you play, you are a great seeker!" Jimin smiles at her as they slowly make their way down.

"Thank you," Minjeong blushes at the sudden compliment. "You look and sound really different today, Jimin." The younger girl says and quickly adds 'a good difference' when she realises it may be taken wrongly.

Jimin laughs before tilting her head at Minjeong. "What's different?"

"You are usually more reserved and serious, but you feel more light-hearted and relaxed today. Not that being reserved and serious is bad, it's all good really. I like both sides of you." Minjeong chuckles nervously. “And I'm rambling now.”

"It’s fine," Jimin laughs again. “Oh, we are here!”

“Oh, that’s quick.” Minjeong mumbles.

“Yeah, we walked pretty fast!” Jimin chuckles obliviously and points to the stands. "I'll go and watch from the sides."

"Oh, you are watching?" Minjeong’s eyes light up, betraying her nonchalant tone.

"Yeah, don't get hurt! I wouldn't like that very much." Jimin scrunches her nose at the thought of the seeker getting hurt. "Bye!" She turns and leaves without another word, leaving a clueless but blushing Minjeong to wonder what that one sentence really meant.

Watching players swoosh around in their broomsticks passing a quaffle is really boring to Aeri but Jimin seems to be having a fun time, especially watching a specific someone chase after the golden snitch.

“Jimin…”

“Yes?” Jimin answers, eyes not leaving the seeker.

“You have been watching them practise the whole morning, how much longer are you going to sit here?” Maybe Aeri should have just chilled at their common room instead of joining Jimin here the moment she got the news from Yizhuo.

Jimin just shrugs. “I guess I will leave it up to Felix!”

“But Jimin, the effects may wear off soon…” Aeri sighs, turning her head back to the sky only to see a bludger coming her way at a frightening speed.

Thud.

“Oh my god, Aeri!” Jimin immediately tends to her best friend.

“Jimin watch out!” The Gryffindor prefect hears Minjeong’s sweet voice from behind and when she turns, she is faced with the same situation Aeri was met with seconds ago.

Ah, the effects have worn off.

As it turns out, taking a bludger to the head can knock someone out really bad. When Jimin wakes up at the hospital wing with Aeri still unconscious at the bed beside hers, two days have apparently passed.

“Your girlfriend has been bringing you flowers daily.” Madam Pomfrey says as she walks in to give Jimin her potion.

“I don-”

“Oh, you are awake!” Jimin looks up to see Minjeong standing at the entrance with a bouquet of flowers in her arms.

“There’s your girlfriend,” Madam Pomfrey says as a matter of factly. “No frisky business here, you two.” She warns as she makes her way out.

“We are not t-” Minjeong tries to correct with her face flushed but the nurse has already left.

"Hi Minjeong." Jimin clears her throat and initiates, trying to dispel the awkwardness in the air.

"Hi Jimin, how are you feeling?" Minjeong turns and walks over to the fifth year instead. "The blow seems bad." She looks at the bandage on Jimin's head worriedly.

"It doesn't hurt that much," Jimin assures and gestures to the flowers. "Are those for me?"

"Yeah," Minjeong puts them down and rubs her neck sheepishly. "I heard from Yizhuo that you took liquid luck to ask me out on Sunday."

Silence.

Damn, how much did Yizhuo say though?

If Jimin missed her chance even with the liquid luck, does she really stand a chance now?

"You can ask me now." Minjeong pipes up with a sudden newfound courage, blushing furiously.

Jimin stares at the younger woman as if she had grown another head. Her mouth opens and closes as she thinks of what to respond, unsure if her ears were injured during this accident too.

Judging by the Gryffindor’s reaction, Minjeong starts to worry if she was being too straightforward with her question. Before she tries to speak again however, it seems Jimin has decided to take a leap of faith as she mumbles softly. "Would you like to go on a date with me? To Hogsmeade?"

"Yes!" Minjeong jumps a little at how loud and eager her voice sounds as she meekly adds another softer yes.

Jimin blinks, unable to believe she just scored a date with her longtime crush.

Guess Jimin never needed luck to begin with, what she needed was to be herself to get the girl. Who knew all she had to do was ask! (Everybody except her, really.)

Few days later at the hospital wing, Aeri lays wide awake on her bed and wishes she can cut her ears off so she would not have to hear the conversation between the newly formed couple.

"Are you a snitch? Because you're by far the greatest catch here." Aeri groans when she hears the Ravenclaw giggle at her best friend's lame attempt to use Quidditch pick up lines on the seeker.

"Oh, I have one too! I’m not a Beater, a Seeker, or a Chaser. I’m a Keeper." Seriously, aren't they a perfect match? Aeri rolls her eyes.

"But you're a seeker, not a keep- oh OH!" Aeri spares a glance at the two dumbasses giggling, intrigued when she sees how red the both of them are.

"Is this what you have been hearing all afternoon?" Aeri turns to see Yizhuo standing by her bed. The younger is already making herself comfortable snacking on Aeri's Every Flavour Beans.

"Yes," she whines. "Save me."

"Ew, vomit." Yizhuo continues chewing with a grimace, glancing over at the couple. "How are they both the top students of their year?"

"Beats me." Aeri groans for the umpteenth time when she hears giggles coming from her neighbouring bed again.
