If Kana could describe the last few months of her life in a single word, it would have to be… turbulent. She'd quit being an idol and her replacement Kokomi-san had already taken her place.

Though B-Komachi had just lost their centre they were strong, especially Ruby, they survived.

The film Aqua had been working on with director Gotanda was a blockbuster success, Kana knew it was well written, she'd done enough literature analysis and script reading to know when something was good, but this particular script wasn't about telling a story, this film was specifically targeting one man.

Hikaru Kamiki

Aqua had completely destroyed that man's reputation, his career and his image. Kana didn't know how to feel about that, he didn't know Hikaru Kamiki but seeing Aqua's cold and complete thoroughness while dealing with him made a chill run down her spine.

She wondered how long he had been obsessed with revenge. Before they met? After? It didn't really matter, it just showed her that… she really didn't know Aqua very well.

Hikaru Kamiki had been sent to prison for life on 6 counts of murder, one of which included Yura Katayose. Kana had almost been the seventh had it not been for Akane.

Kurokawa Akane. She had a history with her both before and after meeting Aqua, so they weren't exactly friends… in fact when Aqua had told her that he was dating Akane seriously now, she genuinely couldn't see any fault in his reasoning. Why wouldn't Aqua like a polite, beautiful and talented girl like Akane?

Kana knew Akane was a good person, even a foul mouthed temperamental, talentless actress like herself had to agree. Unfortunately just because she could understand why Aqua would choose Akane over her, it didn't mean it still didn't fucking hurt when he did so.

She wasn't dumb, she knew he was at least somewhat attracted to her… right? That's why he would take her out to that well planned date right?

Maybe… she hadn't asked him yet,

Akane was clever. She figured out that Kamiki wasn't gonna just sit around and let his life be destroyed, She deduced that he would either target herself, Ruby or Kana.

She was pretty sure she would have died that day if Aqua and Ruby hadn't arrived with a taser at just the right time. When Kamiki was apprehended by the cops he was smiling, the bastard was smiling. It was a cold yet content smile. The bastard didn't feel any regret whatsoever.

Hikaru Kamiki was detached from the world, almost completely deranged, being caught didn't mean anything for Hikaru, He didn't care about living or dying, he wasn't afraid of death or have anything to live for. Disturbing was a good way to describe his emotionless smile.

Aqua realised his revenge meant nothing. This… monster, Hikaru Kamiki, was simply inhuman, incapable of caring about anything. Even killing him wouldn't put him through any amount of pain.

Achieving his revenge gave him no catharsis, no relief. Because he realised that even killing Kamiki wouldn't make him feel better, The psychopathic bastard was consistent, both in his choice of victims and his value of human life.

He did not care about any human life, including his own. Aqua knew that no matter what he did, He would never truly be able to hurt his father. Hikaru didn't feel animosity towards Aqua or anything really.

That was the first and only time she'd seen Aqua's rage and frustration. He'd been focused singlehandedly on his revenge for so many years and hurt so many people on his way. Only for his target to be completely unaffected.

There was no point in fighting Hikaru Kamiki. He would never regret anything or even feel anything, fear? sadness? Nothing. It was a complete slap in the face for him, it was Anticlimactic and unfulfilling.

Revenge had stopped being just about Ai a long time ago… He guessed it was only karmic punishment that an asshole like Aqua Hoshino didn't get any relief.

And that was the last she'd seen of him before the joint interview.

Many major TV news outlets were covering the story, "former lover of legendary idol, turned to murder." The film had been a major success. So of course the media had several questions. Of course, Aqua maintained secrecy about the whole matter as much as he could. His eyes weren't dark anymore but they were tired.

Aqua didn't consider himself a hero, he was just some selfish guy. He stopped Kamiki because of his thirst for revenge, not because he wanted to stop him from causing further harm to anyone…

Who knows, Aqua wouldn't have interfered if it wasn't Kana who was attacked, what if it was someone else on the set that Aqua barely knew? Aqua didn't like to think of what ifs, but all of them pointed to him being a selfish asshole.

Kana knew that Aqua was not the person she thought she knew, he always shielded her from his dark side… he was curt with her but never mean, noticed small things about her and understood her. She felt more pride when the shows or movies she starred in were praised, Aqua figured that out.

In retrospect he only joined sweet today for his revenge, to get close to Kaburagi Masaya. He didn't need to put in effort for her, him just being there was enough.

He had no reason to give her an opportunity to act, and truly give it her best. But he did it anyway, she didn't have to tell him and he didn't ask for anything in return. Heck he didn't even bring it up when he asked her to join B-Komachi.

His kindness was not a bargaining chip.

Was it really a surprise she fell head over heels for him? She'd not met someone who understood her quite like him… heck she fell for him twice (once under the pieyon mask). Being understood felt warm… comforting… nice.

Maybe that was the exact reason Aqua chose Akane over Kana.

Kana didn't delude herself into thinking she understood Aqua as well as someone like Ruby. But Akane was on a whole different level. She had been allowed entry into his revenge, if only for a short few months.

Akane was soft spoken, polite and nice. All things her foul mouthed self wasn't. Kana was pretty sure she was the better actress too, though Akane said Kana was better.

Akane knew about his revenge and the fact that he was using her. But she also understood something else about him.

When he saved her from jumping from the bridge he had no ulterior goals, nor did he have any other goals while he resolved her public backlash with Mem. Aqua wasn't a nice person, but he was kind. He cared about both Akane and Kana a lot, it's just that no matter how much he loved them, it wouldn't stop him from potentially hurting them just for his own revenge.

He would feel guilty, hate himself, but never stop in his self destructive pursuit of revenge. In all honesty Akane should've been mad at him for pulling her into his twisted revenge, she'd understood from the beginning that there was a reason he kissed her on "Love Now"

However, she also understood that he saved her from jumping because it was the right thing to do.

Aqua was doing this for personal reasons, anger, guilt, not because he wanted to prevent Hikaru from ever being able to hurt anyone again… at least in the beginning, it was a side effect not the primary motive.

Aqua meant to use her… but in the end he never did. She felt grateful and indebted to him after he saved her, and even though he had bad intentions he never acted on them. Perhaps the moment she fell head over heels for him was during the Tokyo Blade drama.

It wasn't a grand romantic moment or anything. It was just a simple realisation that she would be happy spending her life with someone like him.

The 6 months they spent together while he falsely believed his revenge was over were the best months of her life. She truly loved Aqua. She knew he was twisted, and she loved that side of him too.

His lack of self preservation and active self loathing was disturbingly familiar to her, she wanted to care for him… She remembered what she felt like, moments before jumping off a bridge. Like no one could understand or care about her.

If Aqua ever felt like that, alone, she wanted to be the one he thought about, to think of her as at least one person who understood and cared about him unconditionally. Maybe he felt he didn't deserve it, but he was gonna get it regardless.

She identified with his feelings and self loathing very personally, in fact it disturbed her, which is why she wanted to be someone he could turn to if things ever got bad. He liked Kana… She knew that Akane was given a second life by Aqua on the bridge; if he chose Kana, she would be content with his happiness.

And then he chose to protect her. It made her happy, like the queen of the entire world. And during those six months when he called her and texted her and spent time with her, she lived each day more than the last. She felt understood by him and he opened up more too, she understood him more too…

And then he discarded her when she got too involved. Maybe it was her fault for lying to him, to keep the obvious loophole away from him. However Akane knew Aqua wasn't so dumb to not figure out such an inconsistency.

Some part of him, somewhere deep inside him just wanted it all to be over. Akane was ready to fulfil that wish.

Perhaps it was only when Akane tried to kill Kamiki herself that Aqua realised that for all his revenge plans and ambitions, he couldn't see someone he cared about hurt themselves for him.

Aqua deemed himself a coward who only put others into danger. It was a reality check, his actions had consequences. Akane had changed because of him, she had done so willingly (or maybe she was a little twisted from the beginning) but it still was because of him.

He was a coward who ran away from the consequences of his actions. He would do everything alone now. The consequences would be limited to him and him alone. That was the only way he could protect everyone from his revenge.

Letting Akane in was a mistake. He told himself

He had no problem manipulating Kana. He told himself.

He hated himself.

And all of that went to shit once Kamiki was in custody. The bastard didn't have any regrets, nothing even approximating sadness.

He'd pursued revenge and this was his reward. He could feel it, something inside him snapped like a cheap lock. Guilt? Sadness? Anger? All of those whirled together into a twisted tumultuous storm in his head.

And yet… despite having walked all the way down his path to revenge, Akane whom he'd discarded, Akane who had promised to walk to hell with him… She was still there , right beside him.

She didn't ask to be a part of his revenge or even claim to understand or relate to his strong feelings, however, she told him that she wanted him to just look at her as an equal, as someone who cared for him and someone who tried her best to understand him.

When Akane dealt with her feelings back then, she didn't have anyone, but she'd successfully become the person she needed, the person Aqua needed.

That was the one and only time Akane ever saw Aqua cry. He sobbed heavily and bitterly in her arms. She couldn't do anything about his feelings, those were for him to sort through, what she could and would do for him was be there for him every step of the way.

That night Aqua slept like a baby after crying for hours.

After everything was over… Aqua asked her out with a bouquet. He didn't sugar coat anything, he apologised for everything he'd done (and some part of him was nervous because of his own audacity to ask Akane out).

Akane knew that Aqua's feelings were genuine, whatever they had together was twisted and contorted, but it was still love. Mutual love.

They're 8 months into their relationship, and they've never been happier. Aqua's still stoic but even Ruby can tell, he's genuinely more happy, and Akane herself is over the moon.

Kana was the only one who was left in the dust.

The last time Kana had been completely ignored by Aqua during the entirety of his relationship with Akane. Fortunately he didn't ghost her this time around tho at this point she wondered if he even needed to.

She'd joined strawberry productions as an idol but not as an actor, but she officially changed that, there was no one she trusted more to be her manager than miyako-san, of course she was still able to come over to the office nd meet Mem and Ruby sometimes, she was Ruby's friend and senpai after all. But that didn't mean she saw her too often, since she'd really taken off in her career after playing Ai in the "15 year lie". She was massively popular.

What she did now determined her future for the decade. Kana herself was making wonderful connections everywhere, while she no longer felt like the centre of the show like she did when she was a child, being an active member and doing work… made her feel valued.

Aqua on the other hand had gotten massively popular as well. It was no surprise after all, His acting in the movie was incredible. Modelling for fashion magazines, working in shows as major side characters, heck Miyako-san was branding Ruby and Aqua together as the Hoshino twins.

Branding like that is powerful. Of course they were doing well. Aqua was getting a lot more hot and intelligent villain roles now… the kind that girls fawn over, however he wasn't limited, just the other day, Aqua got his first ever lead role in a seasonal web series.

It's a new project by a relatively smaller studio but it's promising.

As a result she hadn't seen either of the twins in a while, she couldn't even see them at school anymore since she graduated… She missed them both.

Aqua was in a relationship with Akane and Kana could tell, this one was different from the last one, Aqua was content… happy. As much as she'd like to tell herself to be happy that they are happy and move on with her life (it's not like Aqua had cut contact with her like last time)... She wasn't that strong or selfless.

Kana had been far more involved in the movie side of the industry. She'd gotten her fair share of movies until she found success as the female lead in an indie movie. Directed by Gotanda it seemed to have been his passionate brain child for over ten years.

With so much success… it was pretty much guaranteed that she'd have to act with her again.

Her rivalry with Akane hadn't mellowed out enough for them to be considered friends. She knew that they're rivalry was childish but one it was mutual and two sometimes adults are allowed to not be on good terms with one another.

Despite that she couldn't deny that she acted her best in Akane's presence. And those darn movie directors just knew that pushing them together would result in an amazing performance.

While she wouldn't deny this method's effectiveness, she'd rather not be treated like a variable in an equation for maximum output.

The movie they made together was a commercial success, for a relatively niche film, it was good enough. That was why Kana was at an afterparty.

The showrunners were drinking, the staff were laughing too… It was a loud, fun environment, the exact kind she would avoid because of all the alcohol, however she was there today… because he was there too .

She forgot to mention but Aqua had a minor role too. She and Akane were the leads but Aqua was a side character too. Hence he was present today.

She didn't even have a reason anymore, she'd normally avoid parties like these altogether… but now she was coming here for a boy who was already committed to someone else? She felt pathetic…

Maybe she should just stick to a corner, maybe that'll work… maybe it won't.

It did not.

"Arima" He said in a calm voice, one she'd recognize from anywhere.

"Hey…" She muttered, "Not gonna join the party Aqua?"

"I could ask you the same…" He muttered.

" Yeah… you could…" Kana rested her head and arms on the table " You know this makes me feel nostalgic… it's been like what? 2 years since Tokyo Blade?"

" Yeah… " He remembered that play very well, for good as well as bad reasons.

"You're here, Kurokawa is here… we just need Hikekawa and Narushima."

"I guess you're right… though I wouldn't forget Kindaichi-san or Abiko sensei. "

"Isn't your girlfriend gonna be mad if you're talking to me?"

"Not really?" Aqua had a tiny smile on his face, almost imperceptible if you weren't someone that knew him. But Kana noticed of course he did.

He smiled a little whenever he spoke of her, it wasn't very obvious but it was a regular occurance.

God damn it. She hated how much it hurt. You could say that she'd been trying to move on from him, working more, branching out more, but she just couldn't stop feeling so hurt when she saw them happy.

If Kana had been in a relationship with Aqua she would've been worried so much about him interacting with Akane. Akane on the other hand… seemed to not even consider her a threat anymore.

While it was true that Aqua held feelings for Kana for longer than he did for Akane, it didn't mean his current relationship with Akane wasn't any less genuine. Once Akane could tell he was being genuine, she stopped worrying about him, she trusted him.

Arima Kana felt truly pathetic.

"I see." She took a sip of the drink in her hand, she'd been handed a large mug of beer like the others, the alcohol burned in her throat, honestly making her a little uncomfortable.

"Hmmm? You're drinking?"

"I am 21 so… it's no longer illegal. '' Kana didn't know why, the alcohol didn't even taste that good. She took another sip, " I don't like how beer tastes."

"It's apparently an acquired taste… I don't like it that much either"

"You've tried beer before?" She asked.

"Gotanda told me it tasted awful at first. Until he got used to it. Like coffee" Aqua muttered, "Don't feel pressured to drink if you don't want to."

"Look at you being worried about little old me." Kana teased, her mood was getting a bit better. She had her issues but she really missed both him and ruby since she started college, talking to him was pleasant at the very least. "It tastes like crap. How's Director Gotanda doing?"

"He's busy these days, I've been busy too so I haven't visited him and his parents in a while."

"He still hasn't moved out?" Kana asked.

"No… I think his parents don't mind him staying with them, they're getting old and he brings in money so it's fine… they replaced the old tatami mats in the house a few weeks ago so I think he's contributing too."

" Oh I see…"

"What about you? What've you been up to?"

"University sucks." She said point blank. She had a lot of funds from her child actor days stored and invested, she could easily just retire but…That felt wrong. She was going to University mostly for the sake of fulfilling her education. She wanted to act till the day she dropped dead. "That reminds me… didn't your results come the other day?"

"Yeah…" Aqua muttered.

Kana knew he was studying to become a doctor ( which blew her mind, studying medicine was no joke, doing that whilst working sounded like absolute hell), " So?"

"Tokyo University." He said, " I got in."

"w-What?" Kana almost fell off her seat. " I -oh my god, congrats!"

Aqua looked really amused at her reaction. To him it was really that unexpected. Tokyo University might be the most difficult in the country to get into, but he'd managed to do it once before as Gorou Amemiya. "Thanks."

" Dear god, I knew you were smart but… that's amazing." Kana sincerely said, " What about Ruby?"

"She wasn't interested in going to university." Aqua shrugged. "She said she doesn't want to die from stress or become a washed up adult before she's thirty. I think your complaining scared her off"

"Don't blame that on me! That was all Mem's doing."

Aqua smiled, he was enjoying the banter.

"Dr. Hoshino… it has a nice ring to it."

"It's a bit too soon to call me that."

"You're smart Aqua, If anyone can manage both acting and university at once, I'd expect it to be you."

"You're putting me on a pedestal. Besides, Akane is the best at multitasking"

"Oh."

Aqua sensed he touched a nerve. " Do you have any jobs lined up for now?"

"A couple… a side character role in Himejima's upcoming movie, a few TV Ads… oh, and a baking soda ad."

"Really?"

"I'm not kidding. Ruby will never let me hear the end of it if I tell her"

"Sometimes the jokes write themselves. " Aqua muttered.

"What about you? Didn't you get a lead role recently?"

"Yeah… honestly I'm a bit nervous."

"You'd better be, lead roles are no joke." She sighed, " What's the story by the way?"

"A young doctor joins a big hospital and finds his footing while dealing with cranky patients and hospital politics. " Aqua said, " That's the best way to summarise it without spoiling much. "

"Ohhh."

"The young man is a bit arrogant at first and not really a doctor because he wants to save people… his reasons for becoming a doctor are very selfish." This was something Aqua could never ever relate to, that's what made acting as the lead so challenging for him.

He'd met quite a few arrogant doctors (young and experienced) that didn't really care so much about saving people as they did about stroking their own ego. He hated them back then, he hated them now.

"Unlikable main character… if that's the case you need to give him a lot of charisma to make watching him compelling. No one wants to watch an asshole. " Kana muttered to herself.

"Yeah… I somehow have to make selfishness endearing."

"You'll have to improvise a little, your delivery of the script dialogue will define the character."

"Kindaichi san said he's putting a bet on me after my performance in the "15 year lie"... His recommendations got me the role. Anyway he learns what it means to be a doctor and stuff like that… we've been greenlit for 2 seasons so at least I have job security for the next 3 years."

"Isn't that nice…"

Aqua slowly got up from his seat, "I'll see you later then."

Kana raised her and to waive at him as he left, but she stopped herself halfway and made a pained expression. It only lasted a single moment…

She was happy just talking to him… the pain and discontent she felt were dreadful, but the comfort, ease and happiness she felt around him were wonderful… he was clearly committed to Akane and yet here she was, still infatuated with him. Kana felt so pathetic.

Maybe she should just leave the party. Go home, take a long hot bath and sleep. That sounded nice.

"Leaving already?" It was a voice that was all too familiar to Kana. Kurokawa Akane.

"Maybe. Why?"

"No reason in particular… I just saw you were talking to Aqua."

" Huh… Aqua said you wouldn't mind. Strange" Kana muttered to no one in particular.

"I don't. " Akane clarified. "I trust him."

"Then what do you want?"

"Let's talk."

The air on the terrace was cool. It wasn't a particularly windy night, but the cool breeze definitely made Kana appreciate her coat. Akane wanted to speak in private, the terrace balcony of the bar was the perfect place for that.

"Do you plan to push me off the ledge?" Kana asked.

"Not really. Don't get ahead of yourself and jump okay?" Akane muttered, she completely ignored the subtle hostility in Kana's words.

"Just spit it out already, What do you want?"

"You're being obvious." Akane muttered, " It bothers me."

"..." Kana just sighed and looked out into the city. Akane wasn't wrong to be bothered by it, Kana really wasn't that good at hiding her emotions… Aqua and Ruby could pretty much read her like an open book.

It had always been like this hadn't it? She'd been easy to convince or coerce ever since she lost her child actor fame. Anyone could read her after a while of knowing her after which she was easily talked into doing something… heck even aqua and ruby had done it before, making her join and then making her the centre…

Recently she'd finally started letting go of her insecurities. Especially after almost destroying her career over a scandal, she wanted to take control of her life… still, she couldn't leave behind her feelings for Aqua.

She didn't even know why they were so strong, but she'd stopped questioning it a long time ago… maybe there was no need to be so hostile towards Akane. She could say, mention Aqua again, how Akane claims to not mind them talking, but what would all that hostility achieve.

Kana found herself overcome by weariness. "I'm sorry."

"... Huh?"

"I said I'm sorry."

"..."

"I know you guys are in a relationship… I'm not going to complain about that, it was his and your choice… but I can't act like it doesn't hurt."

"..." Akane sighed deeply, " Aqua… do you know his feelings?"

"... I think I do… he never makes it clear."

"..." Akane sat down on the balcony chair, " I know he loves me."

"I know that too."

"... But it seems he values Kana-chan too. He values the feelings he has towards you." Akane said, looking into the same cityscape as Kana.

"... Really?"

"... He has feelings for both of us, but he made up his mind and made a clear decision."

She didn't know if she liked this revelation. She was considered, and rejected, was that better than not being considered at all? All the time she had spent with him she never even got close to anything resembling a confession… if nothing else she pushed back their relationship a bit due to her rather jealous tendencies…

If only she was as mature as she is now 3 years ago…

"Why are you telling me this?"

"... When we really started dating after Miyazaki, I could tell he was still smitten by you Kana-chan." Akane ignored Kana's question.

"..."

" But even so he was completely devoted to our relationship… he even went so far as to stop talking to you, I didn't ask him to do any of that." Akane sighed, " I think he was haunted by what happened to Ai… What if a stalker targeted you? "

"... Sounds rough…" Kana muttered, she couldn't imagine being Akane or Aqua in that situation. " I can't imagine…"

" I don't know if you know but… you understand why Aqua kissed me at the end of Love Now right?" Akane looked a bit melancholic again, " Because I was too useful and we'd probably never cross paths again."

"He was using you from that far back?"

"No." Akane said sharply, " I'm pretty sure the only thing that stopped Aqua from using you and me is that he isn't as heartless as he thinks he is. "

"... You got involved in his revenge right?"

"If you can call it that, I was simply aware of what he wanted to do and offered assistance… like I said… he never took me up on that offer, Aqua cares too much to use me or anyone else like that. He's not always nice, but he's kind."

"..." Aqua wasn't always nice, but he was kind… Kana decided that was a good way to describe him. "I still don't get one thing…"

"What?"

"Why did you agree to all that?"

"... When aqua saved me from jumping and cleared my name afterwards, he didn't do it because it would give him an advantage, he had no reason to do it, he'd already saved me from jumping which was more than enough… But he did it anyway. " Akane muttered, " "Grateful" wouldn't even begin to describe how I felt."

Akane was a devoted person, perhaps devoted to a fault. After getting to know him more and more while dating him… it didn't take long for that gratefulness to turn into affection.

"When Aqua opened up to me about his motives, I think he was trying to scare me off … and I offered to help him instead of convincing him otherwise. Must've totally caught him off guard. "

" … That's scary… how could you just agree to help… "

In a way being allowed to know about Aqua's revenge made her feel special. She was the only one who knew that side of Aqua… she had already decided she wanted to support him in any way she could…

When he thought his dad was dead and missed an obvious loophole in existing information. She knew that even though he wanted this revenge to end, he wanted to live a life too… then he chose to date her, he wanted to protect her.

"He was smitten by you but he was devoted to me and our relationship, he cared for me, I know he did."

Back then Aqua made a serious effort to be the best boyfriend imaginable, she appreciated it even if she knew he had feelings for Kana, but that didn't matter, his effort was sincere. She could live with that, maybe slowly his feelings would change, maybe this was his own way of changing…

"When I got too involved in his revenge plans… he cut me out." Before that Aqua hadn't seen his revenge seriously affect someone else. Which was probably why he decided to do things alone from then on.

Now she had been with him for almost 8 months and… he was an amazing boyfriend but his love was genuine, Loving Akane didn't mean effort, Loving her was easy, it didn't need effort, staying with her wasn't his duty, it was his happiness… It was sweet. They'd both come very far.

"I don't think he ever anticipated me to be on board with helping him… but he did expect you to be against it."

"... I wasn't gonna support murder, regardless of circumstance…"

"Let's just be thankful it didn't come to that, even though we got very close." Akane remembered, "I'm just happy Aqua managed to keep himself intact through that emotional shitstorm."

"..." Kana was uncomfortable, "You still haven't answered, why are you telling me this."

"Aqua selfishly fell in love with two people, then he made up his mind… but you're not the only one still hung up." Akane sighed, "I trust him enough to know he won't put a finger on you or anyone else, but he still cares a lot, but he's got a bad habit of hurting the people he cares about. "

"..."

"I don't mind you still having feelings for him, or him still wanting to be friends… I don't think we are necessarily enemies and we don't have to be friends… If you're gonna find closure, then it's better if you know everything… or else he's gonna end up hurt or you will end up hurt, I want neither. '' Akane sighed.

"You really don't make any sense, Kurokawa."

"Sure… whatever you say" Akane brushed off her words.

The main reason Kana ever had hostility towards Akane was because she'd been a rising star while she'd been falling downwards since she was 5. She got acting jobs on the regular while Kana struggled to stay relevant, she was praised as a genius while Kana was only remembered for her childhood, something that was firmly behind her.

Then she couldn't even beat her in personal and romantic matters… her hostility stemmed from insecurity.

"Closure is a God damn myth…" Kana muttered to herself.

"Did you notice anything After Tokyo Blade? Any changes in him?"
