Chapter Text
The night sky was aglow from the brightness of the full moon, shining like a newly made silver coin, its beams spreading through the darkness of the night. Accompanied by a handful of stars, scattered across the night sky like tiny bright dots. The occasional barking of the dogs from the dark alley from below broke the silence of the night.
The Black Canary sat on the rooftop of an abandoned building, sighing to herself while slowly and neatly bandaging her sprained wrist. Once done, she mildly stretches her wrist to test the level of pain. The immediate swelling made the bandage feel tighter around her wrist, apart from that the excruciating pain from before seemed to have lessened. The Canary shifted her gaze to the dark alley from below, where the unexpected encounter with Ra’s Al Ghul’s men occurred.
20 minutes earlier…
Her planned meeting with her secret informant from inside the League was going well right until six men, dressed in ninja clothing appeared out of nowhere. Both the Canary and her informant were shocked at the men’s unexpected arrival and the latter tried to make a run for it, only to have his throat slit in split seconds by one of the men, with a “Shuriken” (ninja star).
As her informant slowly dropped dead on the dark alley, the Canary began fighting all the ninjas at once, using both of her batons to dodge their attacks. When one of the men tried to grab her from behind, she caught his hand and within split seconds, picked him up and threw him to the ground. His body slammed into the ground with a hard thud. The rest of them approached with fast counter attacks and before the Canary could react, one of them grabbed her right wrist and twisted it before using his knee to land a hard kick to her stomach. She got the wind knocked out of her from the hard blow to her stomach. The Canary started coughing violently, gasping for air just seconds before feeling another hard kick to her lower back. Another strike landed on her side before she could defend herself. The jolt of excruciating pain had the Canary screaming as she fell to the ground while clutching her side as the men, along with the recovered one surrounded her. They all laughed at her before one of them pulled out a samurai sword from its scabbard, hung at the side of his waist. But before he could swing his sword, two arrows hit him right on his chest, followed by several others, hitting the man standing beside him. The first man slowly let go of his sword before both of them drop dead to the ground.
With two men down, the rest of them turned around to find Green Arrow approaching them with bow and arrows in his hands, quickly aiming and firing one to hit the man on the left. The arrow hit him right on the forehead and the man went down within seconds. The three of them stood in shock as neither was expecting the sudden attack. Before they could react, The Flash and Supergirl showed up from behind them, catching them off guard. The duo joined hands with Green Arrow to take down the rest of the ninjas, while Overwatch went to help the Canary.
“Are you alright, Sara?” Green Arrow’s voice snapped the Black Canary out of her thoughts.
She looked up at him and said, “Yeah, I’m good. Sprained my wrist, other than that I’m fine…”.
Oliver sat down beside her before moving to take her injured wrist in his hands. He gently inspected the injury, sighing in relief when he concluded that it wasn’t as bad as he had thought. “What’s up with the long face?” he asked her.
Sara tutted and replied, “I have no informants left inside the League anymore and I have no idea how we are going to take down the League without any inside help…”.
Oliver slowly nudged her elbow with his. “Don’t worry, we’ll find a way to get to Ra’s, sooner or later… We always do. Right now, I need you to take care of yourself first. Because you have two other tiny human beings, who are fully dependent on you to take care of them…” he said with a small smile.
Sara’s lips immediately curved into a big smile at the mention of her two girls. She secretly wonders if Amaya had put them to sleep yet or if she could still make it home to cuddle up with her little ones before bed. She smiled at that thought. “You’re right. They do need me as much as I need them right now… I miss them so much…” she said with a sigh.
“But you see them every day, don’t you? How can you still miss them?” Oliver asked curiously.
Sara rolled her eyes and slapped the back of his head playfully. “Because I’m their mother, you dumbass… I’ll always miss my babies…” she grinned at him.
“I guess… especially since their other mother is not here…” Oliver said with a wry smile.
“Speaking of which… Ava’s coming home from her deployment tomorrow. I’m taking the kids to go pick her up…” Sara said with a bigger smile on her face.
“That’s great news, Sara! But wait… how are you going to explain this to her?” Oliver asked while pointing at her injured wrist.
Sara sighed and said, “Just make up another good lie, I guess… It’ll be one of hundreds of lies I’ve told her so far…” Sara looked down at her hands in guilt.
“Sara… I’ve told you this numerous times. Just tell Ava the truth about yourself. About us all and what we’re doing for this city. I’m sure she’ll understand you…” Oliver said encouragingly.
Sara frowned as she looked him in the eyes. “It’s easy for you to say. You don’t know her like I do. Ava is someone who always goes by the book. And she’s working for the government. Whatever we’ve been doing is without legal authority. We are vigilantes, Oliver! Not the cops! Do you want me to go and tell Ava that her lovely wife has been doing illegal shit behind her back? That too with my ex-boyfriend whom she dislikes so much… Why don’t we all go and tell her? The more the merrier, right?!” She said in frustration.
“Ava hates me… Just admit it, Sara…” Oliver asked with a raised brow.
“She hates you to the core…” Sara admitted sheepishly.
“And still I’m asking you to come clean with her. You know why? Because it’s been years, Sara! Not days nor months… YEARS! If you keep on hiding your vigilante life from her, trust me it’s going to hurt her more when she finds out on her own. It’s better if she hears it from you instead of someone else…” Oliver said in earnest.
“I just… I don’t know what to do… I… I don’t want her to hate me. Every time I lie to her, I feel so bad about myself. She never asked any questions. She believes in whatever I say. What if I told her the truth and she decided to leave me? And never want to see my face ever again? What will I do then?” Sara dropped her head into the palm of her hands. She is not ready to lose Ava.
“She won’t leave you because she loves you, Sara. She really loves you and the kids. She would never break your family apart just because she’s angry with you. Sure, she’ll be upset and maybe report us to the authorities, but she won’t leave you. Trust me….” Oliver said convincingly.
“I’ll think about it, alright? Right now, I just want to go home to my kids…” Sara said as she stood up “I’ve got a big day tomorrow. My wife is coming home after being away for 8 months… I need to get ready to welcome her home. I’d better get going…” she continued as she squeezed his shoulder.
He nodded and said with a genuine smile, “Okay, off you go. And Sara… don’t bother coming to the bunk for a few days. Just take the time off and enjoy it with your family…”.
Sara returned the smile and said, “Of course, boss. Thanks, Ollie…”. Oliver watched Sara go and sighed to himself discreetly. He just hopes that Sara will tell the truth to Ava before it is too late.
