Work Text:
The loud whirring of machinery could be heard even through the carrier's thick, metal walls. Muffled, thankfully, for the greater good of its occupants. Due to engineering, there was little to no shaking as the carrier flew through the air. This allowed the agents inside free reign to prepare any last minute things for the mission ahead of them. With every minute the scenery of Icebox grew closer.
Most could chalk up the tense feeling inside to nerves because of the mission. But, between the little glances Phoenix and Yoru kept giving each other, Jett smiling nervously at everyone, and Sage and Viper ignoring the rest of them, it was obvious it wasn’t. Phoenix was scowling a little while furiously cleaning his gun. Yoru was wiping down his knives, looking rather calm if not for the tick in his brow.
“Well….this isn’t awkward at all!” Jett chimed in with a nervous laugh.
“Really not the time now fam’,” Phoenix grumbled.
“Who’s fault would that be?” Yoru asked, not even glancing up from his knives.
“‘Who’s fault would that be?’ Don’t you go blamin’ this on me now!” Phoenix scowled while looking at him, “You broke up with me not the other way ‘round-“
“Ladies,” Viper cut in, starring the three of them down venomously. “Save the lovers quarrel for after the mission. Or else. Copy?”
Neither Yoru or Phoenix gave a response back, but they did both shut their mouths. Jett did go to open her mouth but a look from Viper shut her up as well. Phoenix grunted as he loaded his gun onto his waist, shrugging on an extra jacket, less he froze to death when they got out.
It really wasn’t his fault this time. Yoru had always been a lone wolf, it was in his blood. Even together they still butted heads a little, but at the end of the day they resolved their issues together. Lately, though, Yoru had been getting much worse and much more secretive. Leaving for days at a time, giving Phoenix and the others clippy anwser, if any at all. He knew finding out about his ancestors was important, so he’d let it slide. But, wasn’t it also important to cherish the people you had here and now? Phoenix thought so. Yoru hadn’t. It caused such a big argument that Yoru had broken it off right then and there rather than try and figure out a solution. In his brain if they weren’t together they didn’t have to worry about each other anymore.
“What a load of bullshit.”
Sage glanced at him, but kept silent. There wasn’t any time to start something again, anyway, as the carrier started to descend. It was fine. They just had to make sure no spike went off, no one died, and then Phoenix would drag Yoru home and beat some sense into him. Not literally, of course. He shuffled in place and puffed the collar of his jacket as the platform opened up and descended.
“We got this guys.”
“Sage, you and I will go to A. Jett you go mid. Yoru and Phoenix, you both go B,” Viper instructed, checking her venom levels one last time. “No one escapes alive.”
“I really should work on my lines!” Jett said, grinning before she bounded up the platform to the container that overlooked the mid area.
“Wonder if there’ll be any doubles this time, yeah?” Phoenix asked, forgetting the whole ‘not being on good terms’ things until Yoru ignored him and brushed past. He tried to squash down the hurt with anger instead, but it was kind of difficult. Being hot headed tended to go hand in hand with being emotional, period.
Phoenix took his position on top the container, hidden just behind the wall where he could peer out from behind with his gun. Yoru was below him, surveying the area and their blind spots. Now, it was the waiting game. A game Phoenix was never good at. So, it was no surprise that even with the threat of death looming over them he decided to talk.
“When we get back we’re talkin’,” Phoenix said, quiet enough for Yoru to hear him but not to alert enemies. “No matter what you say, yeah? Don’t make me hunt you down, you know I’ll do it.”
There was silence for a moment before a soft huff, but nothing else. But, it was something. They got a notification from Jett for enemies in mid. But, before they could react, the coms suddenly crackled to life with gun fire and yelling.
“Enemies A! They have a Jett and Yoru so keep alert!”
“I know!” Jett responded back, a hint of laughter in her tone despite the gunfire. “I’m looking at me right now! My hairs a mess.”
Phoenix huffed out a laugh and lowered his gun a bit, “Let’s head to A.”
Yoru held up a hand, stopping Phoenix from moving out his position, “Viper, Sage, anyone have eyes on my double?”
The following silence was tense with something Phoenix wasn’t quite catching before Sage’s voice came through, “No. We got a glimpse of him but it looked like he was searching for something.”
“Do you guys have a hold on A? Jett, your double?”
“A is held down. My double? Uhm…good question…,” Jett said, the sheepish tone in her voice obvious. “She kind of disappeared. Don’t know where she went.”
“She’s not at A,” Viper responded. “We need to take out their Reyna.”
“We stay here,” Yoru instructed. “I have a bad feeling about this.”
“Maybe they just went on a leisurely stroll,” Phoenix said. But, despite the joke he lifted his gun up and stayed alert. If the two had split up from the group it could only mean they were looking to plant the spike here, and the others were a diversion. What Viper said earlier stuck with him though. Legion Yoru looked like he was looking for something, and their Jett had left in the middle of battle. Wouldn’t it have been better to get rid of their Jett? Make it easier to plant the spike?
The longer they waited the more antsy Phoenix grew. He could see it was the same for Yoru, never looking in one place too long, and he’d even casted a glance or two in Phoenix's direction. Finally, Vipers voice sounded over the coms but it didn’t help his nerves, only made them worse really. She sounded…guilty? Nervous?
“Phoenix….keep an eye out for yourself.”
“…uh…why? If ya’ don’t mind me askin’?”
“You remember I returned from a mission not to long ago,” she said. “And I mentioned your double was there.”
“In all his handsome, yeah,” he said, watching Yoru creep a little ways to look around a container.
“I killed him.”
Phoenix paused, Yoru doing the same. It was shocking really. They all knew when fighting their doubles it came with having to kill the other. You may have to kill the double of an agent you considered a friend, a lover. Most of the time it wasn’t permanent, not really. They had their own Sage, but it didn’t get rid of the feeling of watching someone who had their face bleeding out on your shoes.
“Sages resurrection only works if you can get the body to her within a certain time,” Viper didn’t stop. It distracted Phoenix. “The spike was going off, my venom cloud was up. But, they thought it was too far gone and had started their retreat, until their Yoru noticed Phoenix wasn’t with them. He tried to return but between my cloud and the spike there wasn’t enough time, one of his teammates forced him back into the carrier. Leaving their Phoenix behind.”
It was quiet for a moment. Hearing that your double was permanently dead was an odd feeling. Because, he himself wasn’t dead but in their universe he was. How would it feel, seeing your dead friends double alive and kickin’? Yoru must’ve been thinking the same thing, because he had that bitter look on his face that he always got when thinking something unpleasant - a look that Phoenix really shouldn’t think is cute - and he turned around to look at Phoenix. Only for the look to drop, eyes alight in panic.
“Phoenix!”
“Found you.”
Phoenix turned, catching a glimpse of Legion’s Yoru behind him. But, before Yoru could shoot their Jett lunged at him - distracting him and allowing their Yoru to grab Phoenix. Or, well , almost. Yoru had managed to grab a hold of the collar of Phoenix’s second jacket. Elbowing him in the gut, Phoenix slipped out the jacket and rolled off the container, falling to the ground. He could hear his Yoru and their Jett fighting to the side.
“Look mate, we can talk ‘bout this-“ Phoenix started, going to grab his gun. But, when his hand came up empty he looked up. And there his guns were, dangling from Yoru’s hands as he smirked down at him. “So not funny mate!”
“I think it’s a little funny,” not his Yoru said, jumping down but quickly throwing his arm up when Phoenix threw a flash.
“Shit -“ Vipers voice crackled over the coms. “Spike planted A!”
“A bit-“ Phoenix slammed his shoulder into Yoru, throwing a mental apology even though he shouldn’t. “Busy here!”
He caught a glimpse of Yoru being knocked to the ground and he felt sick. Yoru was just knocked out. Not dead, at least that’s what Phoenix was telling himself. But, as he was always warned in Brimstones stupid field classes, if he wasn’t focused on the battle then things would go south. This was proven when he was knocked to the ground, Legion Yoru pinning him down as Jett went to subdue Yoru.
Phoenix scowled, struggling to no avail against his hold. When Yoru didn’t budge, he finally gave in and slumped to the ground. Out the corner of his eye he could see his Yoru blinking against probably spots in his vision, squirming as he realized he’d been tied up.
“Go ahead. You’re just gonna kill me yea- h?” Phoenix started, the fire in his voice dying a little when he finally looked at the doubles face. While normally both the Yorus were calm and collected, this one was not right now. He doesn’t remember the last time he’d seen such a vulnerable look on Yorus face, let alone tears in his eyes. Usually, Yoru tried to cover up any vulnerability in a thin layer of irritation or anger. Phoenix was used to breaking it.
“…Yoru?” He asked, hating the concern in his voice. These were their doubles, had tried and continue to try killing them and their world all the time. But, the face and mannerisms staring back at him were still Yoru. The Yoru he argued with all the time, but who also had a gentle calm about him sometimes as he showed Phoenix his knife collection. Who had nightmares about the rifts and seemed hesitant to allowed himself comfort. Even if they were fighting right now and not ‘together’ Phoenix loved him.
“…I missed you.” His voice was quiet, rough. Phoenix held his breath as Yoru leaned forward, pressing their foreheads together as he shut his eyes. He didn’t say anything. Because, it made sense. Yoru had tried to go back and save his Phoenix even with the spike detonating. Phoenix was dead in their world. And, if this warranted such a reaction then it means even their doubles are together. Were.
“I’m sorry.”
Because he was. Phoenix could only imagine how he’d react if his Yoru died due to the Mirrors. Going on missions and having to see glimpses of his face on the other team. Phoenix had been a vigilante before and he could be one again.
“I’m sorry Yoru,” he said again, gently. Hoping he wasn’t coming off as patronizing. Their lives were still at risk here.
“Phoenix-“ his Yoru started, cut off with a grunt as Jett kneed him.
“It’s okay,” Legion Yoru said as he pulled away. When he pulled away, even if his eyes were still glossy, there was a determined set to his face. “Because you’re coming with me.”
“Coming with you-?”
“Yoru! Phoenix! Where are you? We’re retreating, the spikes about to blow guys!” Jett’s voice sounded over the coms.
“We need to go,” other Jett said, standing up.
“Whoa whoa guys - you can’t just - this is kidnapping -“ Phoenix stuttered, wincing as he was roughly flipped over, metal cuffs applied to his wrists and - “Fam what the fuck are these? What’d ya’ do to my flames?”
“We both know you’d just burn through the ropes,” Yoru said, tossing Phoenix over his shoulder before turning to Jett. “Let’s go.”
“Let him go!” Yoru snarled while flipping over on top his stomach. His face was twisted in anger but Phoenix could see the panic in his eyes, “You can’t have him!“
“Too bad, he’s ours now,” Jett said, sticking her tongue out at Yoru while skipping ahead of them. “I can’t wait! When we get back I’m gonna show Phoenix how the real Jett has fun!”
“You can’t leave him there!” Phoenix cried out. Because while he was being kidnapped, he wouldn’t die, at least, he doesn’t think so. “The spike-“
“Watch us.” Yoru said, not even looking back.
“Someone will grab him…maybe,” Jett chimed in.
Phoenix and Yoru locked eyes before he was taken around a corner. He felt like he was going to be sick, the sinking feeling in his gut making his head spin a little. There was no guarantee he was going to live, wherever they were taking him. And, now he’d have no idea whether his Yoru would live or die. He heard his Yoru groan a little and stop.
“Jett, being the other rift Walker closer to their carrier. Before he starts crying,” Yoru said, being starting to walk again.
“I wasn’t going to cry!”
“Yes you were,” Jett said, sighing before she ran off back in the direction they’d come.
It was pathetic, really. Crying infront their doubles because he wouldn’t get to see Yoru again. But, hey, at least now Yoru would get to live. Even if there was still a chance Phoenix himself would die. They always said he was ‘stupidly selfless’ not his words, among being reckless. And, there was always the chance that Jett would just kill Yoru out of sight. But, he couldn’t help but believe that she wouldn’t. I mean, if Yoru had even bothered telling her that, surely it meant they wanted Phoenix in a good mood? Hopefully?
“Not it on explaining this to Brimstone!”
Phoenix blinked as he was dropped down on a seat across from Killjoy. They never talk about how disorienting it is to see doubles of your teammates surrounding you. Especially when you know your killjoy is back at base tinkering with bots, and your Reyna is doing…whatever Reyna does. Instead of glaring at you from the corner of the carrier. Which, very terrifying by the way.
“Phoenix returned,” KAYO/O said. “Preparing for liftoff.”
“Jett - Nevermind,” Yoru said as Jett slid into the carrier at the last minute. Dock closing shut behind her. She plopped down next to Phoenix and sighed splaying out.
“You two really are just like,” she said. “You should’ve heard the words coming out of his mouth. Honestly Phoenix I don’t know why you guys like them so much.”
“That’s -“
“None of your business,” Yoru finished for him.
This was giving Phoenix a terrible sense of deva vu. Other than the cuffs it didn’t seem like he was getting kidnapped at all. More like he was returning from a mission with his teammates. Killjoy talking enthusiastically about tech stuff he barely understood to KAYO/O, Reyna brooding in the corner threateningly. The only differences were Jett and Yoru and by that he meant how close they were to him. How they kept glancing at him like he’d disappear any moment, while still trying to act like they normally would. It…made him feel things knowing how missed their Phoenix was. How missed he would be by his team, hopefully. He hoped he’d be missed.
Wow, Phoenix was kicking his own ass today wasn’t he. Who was he kidding he’ll definitely be missed, how could they not miss him of all people honestly.
“You’re thinking too much,” Yoru said, pressing a finger between Phoenix’s brow. “Stop it.”
“….,” When was the last time his Yoru had touched him? A few weeks ago? He shook his head. “Me? Thinking? You know I don’t do that bruv.”
“Suuure,” Jett said, bumping shoulders with him. “Relax dude! You’re with us now. So it’ll be alright, yeah? Take a nap or something, cool off. There’s not much a difference between us and them right?”
The memories made were different, for one. Oh and, “I don’t think they’ve handcuffed me before.”
“Cautionary,” Reyna said, turning her hand over to inspect her nails. “No promises you won’t try running back to them yet, after all.”
“Don’t worry,” Killjoy said. “They’re just a prototype! I’m sure I could fix them to be more stylish. A ring? I’m sure you’d like a ring, fits your vibe.”
“…Thanks.”
With that, the carrier fell into relative silence. Phoenix switched between observing the others quietly, trying to see if there was anything he could see to differentiate them from his. Reyna looked the same. KAYO/O did too, though he kept an eye on his Reyna. He didn’t do that in his universe. It was hard to ignore Yoru looking at him but he managed. Jett seemed to have more of a wild look in her eye if possible.
She spotted him looking at her and threw a smile, “Sorry about the Venice thing by the way! Figured we should get that out the way if you’re gonna be here now.”
‘Should this’ ‘should that’ they were very confident and certain about Phoenix staying with them. No matter what.
“I’d say I forgive you, yeah, but also my Jetts still kinda messed up bout that.”
“Whoops,” she giggled a little but otherwise didn’t seem that apologetic. But, whatever, Phoenix had sorted his feelings about that out the way awhile ago or else he’d still be stewing in confidence issues.
“Don’t throw up,” Yoru said. And, that was the only warning Phoenix receive before the ship started violently shaking. The lights blinked on and off, and outside Phoenix could see a swirling of colors. His gut dropped to his feet as the ship squeezed and - it stopped. Through his swirling vision he could see the underwater area of Pearl as they landed.
“Easier…said…then done…,” Phoenix bit out, hiccuping a little as he grit his teet. Yoru huffed but that didn’t stop him from seeing the little grin on his features. His arm was grabbed as he was gently pulled up, stumbling after Yoru and Jett down the platform. Stuck underwater. This was a fire dudes worst nightmare, really.
Phoenix leaning against Yoru as they walked was only due to his sickness and being handcuffed, nothing else. But, judging by the look in Yoru’s eye when he glanced at Phoenix, he didn’t do a good job at hiding it.
“How long were you guys watching us?” Phoenix asked, watching headquarters loom over them.
“Long enough to see you’re better with me.”
——
“How do we know he won’t cause trouble the second he’s released?” Viper asked. She leaned against Brimstone’s desk, arms crossed as he stared at Phoenix. He flashed a smile that he hoped was more on the side of reassuring rather than ‘you don’t know’.
“He’s proven to be just as idiotic as…our Phoenix,” Yoru said, pausing on the words ‘our Phoenix’. He cleared his throat. “He’s been subdued thus far.”
It was quiet for a moment then Jett offered a quiet, “Please Brimstone.”
“…Yoru, Jett…” Brimstone said with a heavy sigh. He massaged the bridge of his nose before turning his gaze onto Phoenix. Who shifted nervously once all eyes turned to him. While Phoenix tended to cause troubles, most of the time it didn’t warrant personal meetings with Brimstone. But, they seemed…much closer with everyone here. Maybe the threat of your world ending helped with that.
“Not to interrupt or anything’ but do I get a say in this, yeah?” He asked while leaning back in his seat a bit. “I’m sure my…you’s kinda want me back too fam.”
Yoru’s face soured at the thought of releasing Phoenix and Jett looked like a kicked dog. He immediately felt like shit for saying anything even though it was the truth. If Phoenix was close with his Jett and…Yoru now, he wondered just how close they had all been? And, his Viper had taken that away from him. He was getting a headache, this was getting a bit too complicated for his liking.
“They don’t d-“
“Yoru,” Brimstone cut him, leveling him with a stern look. “He does have a right to decide whether he wants to stay or not. We’re not going to kidnap Phoenix.”
“Appreciate it?” That was totally why he was even here but whatever.
“How about a trial run?” And suddenly Jett was in his face, obviously upset. Something that definitely did something to his heart. She was like a little sister to him and he hated seeing her cry, especially didn’t want to be the cause of it. “A week, can’t you give us a week? Then you can leave! If- if you want to…”
“….,” they gave him time to think about it. And, even though he should promptly tell ‘em to ‘fuck off’ he didn’t. A week, that’s all they were asking for, not even a month. Then if he wanted to return, he could. That…wasn’t bad. Maybe that would be enough time to come to terms with his death, yeah? They had to leave him behind to be consumed by a spike. There’d been no goodbyes, no burial for him or anything, he was just gone. “…Just a week.”
Yoru was already undoing the cuffs before Brimstone finished saying ‘Alright’. Phoenix was hauled up by his hand. For a moment he thought Yoru was going to hug him, he looked like he wanted to. But, Yoru had always been pretty private about showing affection when the others were around. He thought it’d be the same until Yoru was wrapping his arms around him, pulling him close. And, Phoenix was but a man. If he closed his eyes he could imagine it was him and Yoru getting back together after their argument…
He hadn’t even realized he’d been leaning into him until Jett giggled and Phoenix forced himself back, rubbing the back of his neck as he grinned a little, “…Sorry dude.”
Yoru seemed more upset at Jett interrupting them than anything. She cackled and linked her arm with Phoenix’s, dragging him out the room chanting ‘Me first me first!’ Before Yoru, or anyone, could stop her. Which he was sort of glad for. He didn’t know how he’d react being alone with Yoru. Or well, he kind of did seeing at how he’d reacted so far, but he should try and resist right? This was the doppelgänger of his boyfriend - ex boyfriend. And, there was a heavy look in Yoru’s eyes he didn’t know if he’d be able to stop anything from happening.
“Where we goin’?”
“To see everyone else, silly! Then I’ll show you your room, you need to know where you’re going to sleep after all,” she said. She paused, seemingly reluctant, before continuing. “Or not.”
“Or not?”
“You started sleeping with Yoru. I don’t know if you want your own room or to sleep with him. Do you?”
“…I don’t know.”
“Then we’ll leave that for later! First ups, Sage,” she said, pulling Phoenix along. On the way there she rambled about small things that might be different, about how Phoenix will have to get used to living underwater. About whether he’d want to join them on missions in the future or not. Seemingly forgetting he’s only there for a week. Eventually they came to a stop infront the medical wing, turning to him with full seriousness.
“You may have to give her some time, she may not react well,” she started off, fidgeting a bit while avoiding eye contact. “I know it didn’t happen to you but. She dragged Yoru back into the carrier. She was real messed up about not being able to save you. Maybe not as much as Yoru was to lose you but…yeah. They don’t get along well anymore.”
So Sage had made them leave him behind. But, from what he’d heard about the incident she didn’t have much a choice. The spike would’ve gone off and Yoru would’ve died as well. So far the doubles seemed to act pretty damn similar so…
“I think I know myself,” Phoenix said. “I don’t think I would’ve blamed her, she ain’t have much choice right?”
Jett blinked before smiling in relief, dropping her hands. “You should tell her that, if you get the chance. I think it’ll help her a lot.”
When they walked in Sage was taking care of a burn on Raze’s arm, much to her displeasure based on her face. She saw Phoenix over Sages shoulder and whistled loudly then laughed.
“Phoenix! My man! Don’t tell me I’m seein a fantasma now!” Reyna hollered. She actually checked herself for a concussion for a second, before squinting at him again.
Sage froze for a moment, before slowly turning to look at them. She didn’t meet his eyes - looking him over from afar before finally looking at him. But, between Yoru and Jett he really couldn’t handle staring into heartbroken eyes anymore, looking away. Their Phoenix…was he being missed this much?
He couldn’t help that sliver of self doubt worming it’s way in.
“…Surprise!” Jett said, throwing her arms out to the side to introduce him. “Phoenix! Well. Uhm. He’s Kingdom’s Phoenix, but Phoenix all the same!”
“I see,” the disappointment was painful to hear in Sage’s voice. Phoenix was wondering when he’d hear it. Jett and Yoru seemed happy enough just having Phoenix there but soon they’d have to come to terms with the fact that he wasn’t their Phoenix. That he couldn’t be their Phoenix. Only a day here and he was alreayd starting to feel like a phony in his own skin, wasn’t that something?
“It’s…” Sage walked closer and Phoenix didn’t move as she cupped his cheek and looked at her. “It’s good to see that your light hasn’t died.”
“Oh,” he replied, lamely. Clearing his throat he squared his shoulders, “I don’t plan on kicking it anytime soon, fam’!”
That seemed to help a little. Even if the disappointed sad look in his eye didn’t go away, she did smile a little before letting him go.
“I’m sorry, you know, we’ll I’d be sorry for dying on my team so-“ he started, stumbling awkwardly over his words. Rubbing the back of his neck as he looked away, “If it’s any consolation, I wouldn’t have blamed my Sage, if we were in your position. So I’m sure your Phoenix don’t either.”
“….Thank you,” she said softly. “For trying to make me feel better.”
“Phoenix! You and me later, some tunes and fire yeah? Don’t go slippin on me now!” Raze yelled after him as Jett tugged him along.
They moved onto the others. It was how Phoenix discovered that this Omen preferred crochet to knitting. He almost got killed (a second time) calling him cute like he had his last Omen. But, it earned him a laugh from Jett and a reluctant welcome back from Omen. Cypher was quieter and said something about Nora being alive in another universe (whoever that was), and he already had a chess date. Something about seeing if he had more patience then their Phoenix did.
He probably didn’t.
Astra was kind of weird, but Astra had always been a bit weird with the whole cosmos thing. She didn’t seem surprised to see him, more like expected it. It was kind of weird for both him and Jett so they agreed to leave quickly. Breach kept testing if he was a ghost despite them telling him that he was very much alive. Neon was very happy to see him kicking, which he was surprised about. While him and his Neon got along well enough he wouldn’t have called them close or anything - must be a this universe thing.
“Ah. So that’s what he was talking about. This will be a problem…,” Chamber said.
“What?” Both Jett and Phoenix asked.
That was the end of their conversation with Chamber. Both Sova and Skye weren’t too happy to see him compared to the others. Sova especially thought it was pretty dishonorable to take him from his team. Which…very Sova thing to say, Phoenix was almost happy to hear him say that. If Jett didn’t look so upset about the words, pulling him away from them promptly.
“And this will be your room!”
The doors slid open to reveal a pretty lifeless room. Not surprising, considering well, no one had been living in it. A bed big enough to fit two, a desk with a tablet set on top of it, along with a window and an empty shelf and night stand. Meant for him to personalize assumedly. If he stayed.
“I uhm….I wanted to have a movie night, like old times…,” she stopped, frowning. “…Did you and your Jett have movie nights?”
“…Yeah, we had one together when we joined.”
“We have them occasionally, with whoever wants to join,” she said, then shook her head. “I was going to invite you to a movie night, but they highly suggested I let you settle in and think a little first so….” Jett scuffed her foot against the floor. “If you need me, call me!”
When the doors shut, Phoenix immediately sat on the bed with his head in his hands. He immediately pressed his palms against his eyes. Ignoring the little Sage voice in his head telling him that it was bad for his sight. It was just…so much to absorb. The different reactions to his appearance. The different reactions to how he’d die. The questions on how his team would be reacting to the news. Would they care as much as they did here? Did it matter? If they didn’t care would he stay here? Permanently feeling like an imposter in his own skin because he didn’t share the same memories as them? Phoenix wasn’t meant to think this much about ethical shit like this, a headache building behind his eyes.
“What did I tell you about thinking?”
Phoenix looked up, blinking the spots from his vision to see Yoru leaning against the doorway. Even if it was just his double, Phoenix still did feel some sort of relief. His shoulders relaxing a small bit even as he eyed Yoru.
“Not to do it? Or something? Sorry I forgot mate.”
“I see that’s the same,” Yoru said. There was a sad fond look on his face as he pushed off the door. Walking over to the desk he ran his finger across it and fiddled with the tablet on the desk. “…How was Jett’s tour?”
“…Weird,” he confessed. “You guys know me but not…me. I don’t know how I feel bout it mate. Everyone sees much closer round here. Makes me wonder how my team is reacting.”
“Fine, probably, seeing how I was ignoring you,” Yoru said bitterly, flicking some screens aside. “Sneaking up on you was too easy. I always watched my Phoenix’s back.”
“Not good enough-“ Phoenix said, regretting it instantly when Yoru froze. He opened his lord then shut it, rubbing his hand over his face. “Shit, I’m sorry. That’s not true. I don’t blame you or anything, he wouldn’t have either. And…Yoru and I are just going through a rough patch..”
“…No, you’re right,” his shoulders untensed a little as he sighed and sat beside Phoenix. “Your Viper found out we were all close. Split us up. Took advantage of it.”
Yoru’s nails were digging into the fabric of his pants. And, at the end of the day above all else no matter what fucked up universes existed, it was Yoru. He took Yoru’s hand in his cautiously, but Yoru didn’t pull away. He ran his thumbs along his knuckles gently. It was quiet as the last of the tension seemed to drain from them both. Both of them knew that they weren’t the others ‘them’ but they could accept that.
“…Give us a chance,” Yoru said. And, though Yoru never begged, Phoenix couldn’t help but feel like he was right now. Yoru took his hand and kissed the inside of his wrist softly while looking at him, “All of it. During this week we can make new memories, instead of making you feel like a replacement. I can’t promise there won’t be moments we won’t forget, won’t mention something you never experienced but we’ll try. Just give us a fighting chance.”
“…I will.” Even if Phoenix could lie and say he wouldn’t. That he would spend the week only thinking about going home and reminding himself that they didn’t know him, he didn’t. Seeing all the feelings about his death, how could he not give them a chance? (And, even if he didn’t confess it to himself yet, burying it deep - if he stayed, at least his team would know he wasn’t dead. He was still alive, out there somewhere. Just not with them. Was that a better comfort than him being gone forever?)
Yoru smiled gratefully, squeezing his hand before letting it go. He stood and went to the door. But, he didn’t leave right away, hesitating in the doorway as he looked at Phoenix. He opened his mouth then shut it, muttering ‘Goodnight’ before leaving.
“…Oh, right.” Jett had said that their Phoenix shared a room with Yoru right? Knowing Yoru, he hasn’t slept in the room since he died. He dusted off his pants before standing up, ridding himself of his jacket. Maybe he’d talk with Yoru about it tomorrow.
——
He did not talk to Yoru about it tomorrow, or even the day after. Not that Yoru brought it up either.
After the general stress of all the shit that’d gone down, Phoenix had planned on sleeping in. That was quickly thrown out the window when Jett was dragging him out the bed bright and early. For breakfast. Because apparently, if they could fit it in, they liked having breakfast together. Which he’d most definitely not done that with his team
But…it was…nice. Admittedly. There’d been an argument on who exactly was going to cook. Both Raze and Breach banned immediately. Apparently they’d caught the kitchen on fire on more than one occasion.
“This is like our fourth stove because of them,” Yoru whispered. Breach had looked at them accusingly when Phoenix laughed, but they both denied having said anything.
In the end it’d been KAYO/O that made breakfast to show them ‘how a real machine does things’. And, how a real machine does things is using pepper for things that don’t need pepper. Most of them passed on breakfast after seeing Phoenix nearly choke on spicy pancakes. Chamber saved things with some french delight he refused to try and pronunciate the name of.
Afterwards, he was put through a mandatory healthy check up. Mandatory for him, that is. Even though he was perfectly healthy, he reluctantly allowed them to go through with it. Undoubtedly it was some paranoia on their part from the previous Phoenix’s death. The check up wasn’t as awkward as he thought it would be. Sage seemed to have relax a small bit, but it was obvious she wasn’t fully comfortable just yet.
She lifted her eyes from a screen when she heard him huff out a small laugh, “?”
“Just reminds me of when my Sage had to do a checkup for a checkup,” he said, grinning a little at the memory. “She’d been busy, important stuff Yknow, like bullet wound type stuff. Since my injuries were more minor Killjoy was just supposed to do a little check up, make sure I wasn’t concussed or anythin’-“
“ Killjoy examined you?” Her eyes ran over him once again, “Maybe I should check for things internally…”
“I’m fine fam this was like ages ago yeah? Anyway, so I thought she was doing a check up but turned out she was runnin some experiments or tests instead and let’s just say I left that lab worse than before. Sage was so irritated it was kinda funny. Have you seen you when you’re mad?”
“Most would say I’m scary angry,” she mused, eyes alight as she laughed slightly and shook her head. Swiping a few things way she pushed the tablet away and turned towards him, “You’re healthy, Phoenix. Thank you for the check up, I know you didn’t need it.”
“Anything to help you guys chill out a bit for now, it’s nothin.” Phoenix stood up and stretched his arms a little, shooting her a thumbs up before he stepped out the wing - door shutting behind him.
It surprised him that neither Jett or Yoru were waiting just outside for him. He squashed the little bit of disappointment in him. Maybe they thought it would be good to let him breathe by himself for a bit. Though he was a bit unsure as to what to do by himself…should he just act like he would with his usual team?
He decided to make due on Raze’s previous offer. It was easy finding her room since rhat hadn’t changed. And, it was hard to tell a difference between them. Just as chaotic. Just as boisterous. Same taste in music. Time flew with them just listening to tunes together and messing around with her explosives. They set off a fire alarm or two (he expected a strict word from Brimstone about it) but they were stopped quickly so they didn’t investigate.
That’s how Jett and Yoru found him - covered in smoke and laughing with Raze. Neither looked surprised. Yoru just sighed and shook his head, smiling a small bit and Jett just complained about missing out on the fun.
“What’s the two of ya need?” Raze asked, twirling a grenade around her finger very unthreatening.
“Jett insists on a movie night.”
“That I do!” Jett said, lifting her chin up. But, there was a bit of uncertainty to her eyes. “That’s if Phoenix wants to join..”
“…Sure, why not?” Phoenix stood up and dusted himself off, sharing a fist bump with Raze. “You’re just like my Raze mate.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment!”
Phoenix grinned, following Jett and Yoru out. He expected to be heading to one of their rooms but instead they ended up in the common room. It was empty, which was…well in his universe it would be odd. Usually someone was in there. Omen knitting, Cypher playing chess in the corner, or Skye with her animals.
Yoru glanced at him as Jett turned on the TV. “There was an emergency mission, most of the active agents left for now.”
Oh. A mission. Wouldn’t that involve his team? Phoenix pressed his lips together and decided not to say anything, sitting down between Jett and Yoru.
“What do you wanna watch Phoenix?”
“How about an action, yeah?”
“Really? But last time you-“ she paused, flinching a little as she avoided eye contact. “…I mean, our Phoenix was actually a fan of romantic comedies so…”
“…Really?”
“Yes. Much to my chagrin,” Yoru said, saying nothing of Jett’s fuck up. He took the remote from Jett and browsed the movies, picking an actual good movie (in Phoenix’s opinion). “I’m actually quite happy you prefer action.”
“…You? My Yoru likes documentary shit, really don’t know how he does it honestly.”
Yoru wrinkled his nose a small bit, “Horror.”
“Shhh you two, it’s starting!”
Jett was a movie commentator. But, seeing as Phoenix was as well he couldn’t complain. Most of the movie they were talking and making theories. He fully expected Yoru to complain. His Yoru would’ve. But, when he risked a glance over he was just leaning against the couch, watching the movie. Though Phoenix swears his eyes were on him rather than the movie most of the time.
They hadn’t even stopped after one movie, but somewhere in the third one he must’ve fallen asleep. Because when he woke it was to Jett’s head on his shoulder, a blanket over him, and Yoru was gone. He didn’t see Yoru again until the end of the second day. It was hard to tell if it was Yoru avoiding him, because it had been rather busy.
Phoenix had finally gotten into a rather intense round of chess with Cypher, at least intense for him. He was quite proud to find out he had more patience than their Phoenix did, even if it wasn’t by much. Killjoy insisted on using him as a test subject for designing the radiant blocking device to be more ‘stylish’.
“Not to use on you of course,” she insisted.
It was odd. Because Phoenix was convinced that he’d be spending this week feeling like a replacement. Everyone looking at him expecting certain reactions, expectations placed on his shoulders. But, instead it seemed everyone was taking it in strides. They worked around the things they didn’t know about him, asked questions, and made new expectations. It was…sweet. Fun. Knowing someone but not knowing someone, having to figure out tiny new details like a missing puzzle piece.
He didn’t mind it.
——-
Phoenix had trouble sleeping that night. He kept thinking about the agents there that seemed more troubled by his presence. Like Sova and Skye, who by all accounts thought he should be returning to his universe. But, even though he was sure they thought it was for his own food (knowing their personality) it was still odd feeling unwanted. So, he’d gone to the kitchen to get a drink to calm his nerves.
“…Why the fuck are you just brooding in the dark dude?”
Yoru glanced up from where he was staring daggers into a cup of coffee. With the only thing lighting him up being the ambient light through the window. Until Phoenix turned the light on, causing him to flinch and scowl a small bit. Phoenix watched him hunch further over his coffee, eyes tracing over his face and form. He’d thought it before but Yoru’s eyes had looked darker than usual.
“Couldnt sleep.” Yoru said, avoiding eye contact as he sipped on his coffee.
“Looks like you ‘couldn’t sleep’ for multiple nights Yoru,” Phoenix said, frowning as he walked over. “…Is it…you know…Jett said that you and other me slept in the same room together…”
Yoru receded even more if that was possible, “…I’m sure your Yoru had nightmares. About the rifts. Add nightmares about your death on top of it. It doesn’t makes pretty images.”
Slowly reaching over, Phoenix pried the coffee cup away. He hesitated - not sure his touch was even wanted (but, he had to try . Yoru was Yoru. Phoenix hated seeing him so downtrodden.) - before running his hand through Yoru’s hair. The effect was instantaneous, Yoru leaning his head into the touch. So, Phoenix didn’t stop, dragging his fingers through the strands as he massaged his scalp.
“…You didn’t die right away, you know,” Yoru said softly, starting Phoenix. He tilted his head up a little, grabbing Phoenix’s wrist to move his hand to cup his cheek. “I could hear you, when I tried to go back, you-“
“Told you not to be an idiot?”
Yoru huffed out a sharp laugh, the corners of his eyes crinkling a little even as they glossed over, “Exact words. It was the last thing you said to me. Not to be an idiot trying to save you.”
“Me had the right idea then, you would’ve just gotten yourself killed for nothin-“
“ You’re not nothing,” Yoru said fiercely. He stared at Phoenix intensely and goddamn if it didn’t do something to him. Even when they’d gotten together, his Yoru hadn’t ever looked that intense about him. Not really. “I would’ve - I would die for you anytime. Any universe.”
Phoenix’s face crumbled a bit, pinching Yoru’s cheek harshly and taking some triumph in his flinch.
“…It’s does something to my heart hearin you say that, really,” he said, rubbing Yoru’s cheek where he pinched him. “But I’d rather you live for me, yeah?”
Yoru didn’t say anything, opting to wrap his arms around Phoenix’s waist - face buried against his stomach. It was a position his Yoru had taken with him many a time before. There was an ache in his chest at the sight. Phoenix rested his hands against Yoru’s shoulders and squeezed a little.
“Why don’t we go sleep, yeah?” Phoenix offered a comforting smile when Yoru glanced up at him, questioning. “..Together. I’ve seen you sleep deprived and i'd rather not see it again, got it?”
Once the words finally processed, Yoru very reluctantly released Phoenix from his old. He deposited his coffee cup into the sink - gesturing for Phoenix to follow him. Phoenix followed him to his (their?) room, pausing in the doorway to look around. It was obvious that the both of them had stayed here. A framed jersey hung on the wall beside some Classical Japanese painting. The desk was an organized chaos - Yoru’s mask placed on a small stand, with some random items Phoenix could just tell were his. And, the red and blue bed covers.
“…Have you touched this room at all since he died?” Phoenix asked. He struggled against saying ‘me’ because he was still alive.
“…I haven’t,” Yoru confessed, looking at the jersey on the wall before walking over to the bed.
“That really isn’t healthy, but seems being bad at seeking out help is common for all you’s.” Phoenix said, shaking his head fondly.
Yoru didn’t say anything. He just stood by the bed, looking at him nervously, fingers twitching uselessly at his side. He softened a little and cut the jokes. Phoenix decided to take the lead for the both of them. Stepping closer he stripped himself of most his clothes, leaving him in just a tank top and his boxers. He knows he shouldn’t be feeling sheepish - since Yoru has seen everything already - but he couldn’t help it.
Clearing his throat he climbed into the bed and looked at Yoru, patting the spot beside him invitingly. Yoru took in a short breath and nodded, undressing into just a short sleeved shirt and his boxers before slipping in besides him. The lights automatically dimmed. The only light remaining came in from the window over the desk. For a moment both of them just laid there staring at the roof.
“This is stupid mate,” Phoenix said - ignoring Yoru’s flinch - turning over while patting his chest. “Come on. My Yoru was a cuddler, I know you gotta be too.”
“…Not the same,” Yoru said, relaxing a bit nonetheless as he turned over. He cautiously shuffled closer until he was pressed against Phoenix, sighing quietly once he was. “…My Phoenix liked being ‘a big spoon’ as he calls it.”
“I prefer being the little spoon so you best get used to it yeah?” Or, don’t, Phoenix thought. It was a bit hard remembering he was supposed to leave in a few more days. And, thinking about it, wasn’t it cruel to sleep with Yoru like this knowing he’d be leaving? But, waist was he supposed to do, leave him to be sleep deprived?
“Stop thinking,” Yoru muttered, pinching Phoenix in the side, making him twitch.
“Oi!”
Yoru chuckled quietly against him. It was such a nice sound to hear that Phoenix let the assault slide for now. He sighed a bit and relaxed, resting his head against Yoru’s as he shut his eyes. Yoru ran a bit cooler than him. It was like having an ice pack against him and he was asleep in no time.
Phoenix expected Yoru to be gone when he woke up, as he had during their movie night. But, when he slowly surfaced, that was quickly proven wrong. He basked in the feeling of Yoru pressed against his back, hand running along his side, before finally shifting a small bit with a groan.
The hand stopped. “ おはよう.”
“Mornin’ to you too.” Phoenix turned his head to glance over his shoulder. He didn’t know what was cuter, the bed head or the still sleepy look in his eyes. “You been awake long?”
“No,” was all he said, pressing his face against Phoenix’s shoulder. “..Sorry,..can we stay like this just a bit longer?”
“Take all the time you need.” Phoenix rested his hand over Yoru’s.
They ended up staying in bed an hour longer than they were really supposed to. But, it was worth it. Yoru looked more well rested and there was a more content look to his face. He’d love to stay in bed longer but sadly they still insisted on making the most of his week there. Maybe it was because Phoenix did tend to be needy, and his Yoru didn’t usually appreciate his hovering.
Continuing on.
Reyna was nicer here, at least, as nice as Reyna could be. His Reyna never did his nails but here he was, Reyna painting his nails red and orange. Granted, he hadn’t wanted his nails painted but it didn’t take much more than a glare to convince him. It gave him time to observe her, though even if she knew he was looking, she didn’t say anything. Reyna was always animalistic, wild and fierce. He found it as threatening as he did cool. There was something a bit…tamer about this Reyna though. Not by much, but still something.
When she finished, her phone rang and she clicked her tongue and checked the ID.
“Who is it?”
“Lucia,” she said, clicking the answer button as she held it up to her ear.
“Lucia?”
“My sister,” she said simply, deeming their ‘bonding’ done as she walked away.
“She has a sister?” He echoed, stupidly. His Reyna hadn’t ever mentioned having a sister. Maybe something happened? Phoenix frowned but decided to let the subject drop.
The rest of the week proceeded in a similar manner, which was terrible. It wasn’t actually terrible. No, it was terrible because with each passing day he found his resolve about going back to his universe crumbling. Because even if there were some differences, the ones he did see seemed better , at least for the agents. Of course they were running out of radianite and stuck under water but that was a different issue.
He found himself fitting in rather nicely. Hearing the differences between him and their Phoenix was interesting. A talk with Sova and Skye had them warming up to him after finding out he could’ve gone home right away if he wanted to. Which was cool, he really missed them even if Skye wouldn’t let him get too close because apparently he’d almost burnt one of her sculptures before. He found himself on the receiving end of a stare down between Yoru and Sova, Yoru holding him close. Later he learned that he and Sova used to have something going on. Which, well, Phoenix can’t say he hasn’t thought about it. But, also, he was loyal as could be and Sova was too honorable to try something like that.
It was easy falling into similar habits with Jett and even the receiving lectures from Brimstone were worth it. Being here was just too easy, too homey, that by the end he’d sort of forgotten about trying to return. But, even if he had, they certainly hadn’t. The first sign was the fact that Yoru really didn’t want to let him get out of bed that morning. Like seriously.
“C’mon man my breath is getting all funky,” Phoenix complained.
“I don’t care,” Yoru said. He pressed his face against Phoenix’s neck and the drag of his nose under his ear had Phoenix squirming.
“Not fair man just not fair-” Phoenix bit out, squirming again as Yoru did it again, chuckling quietly against his neck. Reaching back, he pushed Yoru’s face away and turned to look over his shoulder, another complaint on the tip of his tongue. Yoru’s face stopped him.
“...Can I kiss you?” he asked, grabbing Phoenix’s hand and pushing it away. He leaned close, face set and eyes intense.
“Where is this coming from?” But, even as Phoenix asked that, the sudden knot in his stomach was already telling him what his answer would be. He avoided eye contact, groaning when he realized he was acting like some shy damsel. Promptly, he decided ‘fuck it’ and pulled Yoru in.
It seemed to shatter some sort of self constraint in Yoru, because the following events were intense. Phoenix’s breath was stolen from his lungs as Yoru crowded against him. A tongue swiped at his lip, Phoenix groaning when he allowed it entrance. Yoru climbed on top of him. All his blood started rushing south, leaving him rather light headed as he pulled Yoru closer by his hips and -
There was a knock on the door.
Yoru tore his mouth away, leaving Phoenix even more dazed as he blinked stupidly up at him. If Yoru’s lips where that red, he could only imagine how he looked right now.
“Busy!” Yoru called, turning his attention back to Phoenix. His teeth were on Phoenix’s neck in an instant, causing him to curse and buck up against him.
“You can’t hog him all to yourself Yoru!” Jett called through the door, followed by some banging.
“Yeah! What she said!” Raze echoed.
“Ignore them,” Phoenix groaned, worming his hands up Yoru’s shirt, even as Yoru sighed and pulled away.
“...No, they’re right, I’m trying to work on the ‘being selfish’,” Yoru said, eyes raking over the marks on Phoenix’s neck with some satisfaction. Purposely grinding down, pulling a whine from Phoenix, he slipped off him and the bed.
“Shit…I dunno, you being selfish isn’t bad
all
the time.” Nonetheless, Phoenix stumbled out of bed. He ignored Yoru’s eyes on him as he went to the bathroom to take a quick cold shower to wake himself up and to fix his problem down below. When he came back out, Yoru tossed him some clothes and they exited together.
The next sign had been the fact that the whole team was there for breakfast. Even Brimstone, and trying to drag that man from his office for anything other than a mission was its own mission in itself. Chamber and Cypher ended up cooking breakfast - which other than the first day, he hadn’t seen Chamber cook, so apparently it wasn't a common occurrence. It was like a family meet up, plenty of talking, plenty of interaction, and just the sort of thing Phoenix thrived in. There were almost too many options to choose from to eat, which is why he didn’t understand Brimstone’s question.
“Have you decided yet, kid?”
Phoenix noticed everyone’s eyes on him and paused with his partially full plate in his hand. Was this some secret cook contest he wasn’t aware of? He chose his words carefully, “...I don’t know yet, everything is just too good here.”
Most of them took the answer in stride, nodding before turning back to their own respective conversations. He caught Jett slumping a bit, Yoru setting a hand on her shoulder, before Neon dragged him into another conversation. They ended up having another movie marathon but a few of the others chimed in this time. He picked most of the movies. Which, he had thought, was a bit odd since half the people there hated the shit he watched but hey, he wasn’t going to look a gifted horse in the mouth. But, two movie’s in and he was dragged into a ‘final fight’ with Breach, whatever the fuck that meant. Half the time Breach was unpredictable, so Phoenix honestly expected a knife in his side in the middle of wrestling. It didn’t happen though, leaving him even more confused.
It was only when he was heading back to Yoru and his room to change out his sweaty clothes, that he was honestly cornered. And, by cornered he meant tackled to the ground - pain blossoming on the back of his head as stars swam in his vision. He blinked a few times to try and focus, only catching the later half of Jett’s teary ranting.
“ - staying right? Don’t go back, Phoenix! We won’t even send you on missions against them if you don’t want to!”
“What the hell are you on about bruv?”
Jett paused in her rant, staring down at him. Her face was flushed and she looked a mix of desperate and just overall sad. “ The week you gave us. Today’s the last day.”
“...Oh.” Had…Had Phoenix really forgotten about that?
“Don’t go Jamie,” she repeated again, voice cracking as she doubled over and held onto his jacket. Phoenix could see Yoru hovering not too far away, looking just as bad if not worse than Jett.
And Phoenix…was a terrible person. Because, at the beginning of this he’d promised them closure at the least before returning to his universe. Because he had to return to his universe. Or, he thought he had to. At the end of the day though, he’d forgotten all about that. All because he’d gotten comfortable here. Adapted. Hell, he’d say he’s been happier here than he had been in his universe and his coworkers looked happier too. Wasn’t that shitty of him? To not want to return to ‘his’ team because he felt better here?
“...,” Phoenix licked his lips and stared resolutely up at the ceiling, “...Can…Can we fake my death to them? Give them some closure?”
Jett’s face lit up as she quickly scrubbed the tears away, because essentially those words meant ‘I’ll stay’. She bounced up and dragged him up after her, “Of course! I can’t wait - oh oh - I need to go tell Brimstone! And the others!”
She enveloped Phoenix in a hug before jetting away. But, there wasn’t a chance to regret or contemplate his decision before he was being crowded against the wall by Yoru. Hands dragged him close by the hips as Yoru bit his neck. In the middle of the hall. Where anyone could walk by at any moment.
“Shame you want to fake your death,” Yoru whispered lowly in Phoenix’s ear, one of his hands slipping into Phoenix’s pants. “I would’ve delighted in seeing my face once he realized I stole you away.”
“Fuck!” Phoenix cursed, throwing his head back as Yoru wrapped a hand around his dick. The tingle of pleasure up his spine along with the thought of Yoru’s pissed face was the worst (best) combination. “Y-You’re smart -” he ground out, fingers digging into Yoru’s arm. “You may not believe I’m dead anyway -”
“Probably not,” he agreed. Dark eyes watched Phoenix squirm and thrust up into his hand as Yoru teasingly dragged his fingers along his length. “It’ll make it even better during missions, teasing him with the knowledge…”
“ Ryo-” Phoenix moaned his name, buckling a little as Yoru’s hand started going faster as a response. He forgot how mad Yoru could drive him with his fingers. Phoenix was left pliant in his grasp, cursing and rutting against him as Yoru twisted his hand just like that then dragged his thumb along the head -
“Later -” he gasped out, panting as he felt the knot in his stomach growing tighter and tighter. “ Fuck-”
“ Later?”
“I want you in ME-” His words stuttered off as he froze, groaning as his orgasm rushed through him in a wave. Twitching as he jerked minutely against Yoru, no doubt dirtying his hand beyond belief.
Yoru let Phoenix lean against him, rubbing his back slowly as he slowly removed his hand. Phoenix blinked his eyes open blearly, now sort of sleepy and sensitive. He wrinkled his nose as Yoru wiped his hand clean on his pants.
“So gross…”
“Its okay,” Yoru said with a shrug, wrapping his arm around Phoenix, grinning at him. “Because we’re about to be rid of them anyway. Why wait for later?”
Phoenix blinked, but didn’t complain as he was whisked away to their bedroom. And, he was right when it came to faking his death. From what he’d heard about the mission - Yoru hadn’t had a pretty reaction. He was kept from regretting his decision too bad by Yoru pressing him into the mattress not too soon after he received the news. It was hard to think about such things when someone was driving into you. Plus, he hadn’t heard anything about the others so maybe they hadn’t cared too much about him dying. It hurt. But, he comforted himself with the thought at the same time. He was fine where he was.
