10 PACES!
FIRE!”
A gunshot. Newt freezes. Time seems to slow down as Newt realises that a bullet is heading for him. Gally wants him dead. Should he shoot Gally, one of his best friends and worst enemies, or aim for the sky? He knows what Thomas would want: justice for what Gally did. But he isn’t here any more. Newt doesn’t have the same bloodlust, and would never forgive himself if he killed someone. If he lived past this moment, that is. The bullet inches closer.
Suddenly, Newt knows what he should do. He should have been dead long ago, when he jumped from the wall of the Maze, or when the Grievers called for them, or in the Scorch, or when they had finally reached the WICKED headquarters. He realises that at least if he dies now, he’s going to be with his love again, after so long apart. That’s when the flashbacks start.
Thomas running and falling when he first entered the maze (Newt was already head over heels). Thomas and Newt talking together by the fire the first night (he was smart and charming as well as handsome!). Thomas running into the maze (Newt thought he’d lost him forever). Thomas in the Scorch (hotter that the desert that were in, especially when his shirt was clinging to his chest). The first time Thomas had kissed him (when they were hiding together from WICKED’s planes). Their first Valentine’s Day together (god, why were there so many of Thomas?). Meeting Sonya for the first time, then finding out they were siblings. Teresa, Frypan, Alby, Ben’s banishment, all flashing by in an instant, but seeming to take an eternity.
And of course the event that landed him in this situation: Thomas’s death. Newt knows it was coming, but it still hit him like a train. It had been a warm, sunny day. Thomas and Newt had been wandering around the area, they were going to go on a picnic together. A hit and run, but of course he didn’t die instantly. Newt had to watch his kind, wonderful Tommy suffer for two whole hours before the end.
Three months ago, but it feels like it was yesterday. Then, obviously Gally had to insult Newt’s dead boyfriend, then demanded a duel to settle this once and for all. That’s why he’s here.
Would it be so bad, to die now? He would have died of Minho hadn’t gotten him to eat for all that time. Does he want to die? Well… he isn’t exactly opposed to the idea. At least if he dies now, he’ll see his love again. Suddenly he sees Tommy, his Tommy standing on the other side, healthy and smiling, with his arms outstretched toward Newt.
He makes his choice.
The bullet enters just below his ribs. Minho and Alby are both at his side where he dies. He doesn’t suffer - the loss of blood makes him fall unconscious instantly. But if you were watching him carefully, really carefully, you might have caught a hint of a smile as he walks into his lover’s arms once more.
