Adam didn’t know what to make of what he heard in the house. He didn’t know what to make of anything. He did feel like a major part of his memory was missing, something just realised after talking to the alternates inside that old house, but it could just be some trick.
It was always tricks with those stupid things.
And Jonah had just… fucked off and left him alone! Adam thought they were friends. Friends looked out for each other, didn’t they? So why didn’t he just stay, and wait it out, instead of being a coward?
The night enveloped the teenager, mosquitos buzzing around the hood of his jacket, illuminated sparsely by the street lamps flickering in and out of luminosity.
He just HAD to take the car too, leaving Adam to walk alongside the road like some bum.
His shoes made cracking noises against the gravel, kicking rocks now and then, Adam lost deep into his thoughts as the silhouette of a car crashed into a streetlight came into view a few yards down the road.
“What..?” Adam muttered, his slow pace breaking into a brisk jog. Upon realising it was Jonah’s car, the jog turned into a dead sprint, fear slamming into his chest, dissipating any ounce of anger he had before. “JONAH!”
Oh god.
The car was stopped right by the road, just sitting there. Headlights blinking on and off into the fog, the driver's door open, metal bent and windows smashed out.
Adam’s breath turned from steady to sharp hyperventilation, hands reaching into the driver’s seat to see if Jonah had somehow still been in the car. He had to be alive, he had to be, they couldn’t have… no he refused to believe it.
“Jonah!” He yelled out into the darkness, snatching a stray flashlight from the passenger glove compartment, barely even needing to click it on before he noticed his friend.
Adam’s breathing stopped.
Jonah didn’t look human anymore. The only thing signalling that it was even his friend was the letterman jacket, the one thing recognisable.
He didn’t have a face anymore, or something resembling one anyways. It was mauled, tainted with bits of static, the only thing left somewhat intact being the left eye, staring up at the sky unblinking. Different types of blood were scattered across the grass, some of it definitely Jonah’s, crimson in colour, bleeding into the grass and smelling so horribly of iron it stung Adam’s nose. But other short splats were… almost static, like a TV without cable, shimmering under the blinking headlights.
Jonah’s insides were also scattered around the street lamp, barely identifiable as human organs, but there was nothing else they visibly could be. Whatever did this, was angry.
Well, whatever Alternate got to him, Adam should say, was very angry.
Jonah was in pieces , and Adam didn’t even know if he could get him into the car. Would the police believe him that an Alternate did this? It looked coordinated enough but it was so… bloody.
He couldn’t think straight.
What was he going to do?
The car. The car!
Adam scrambled, picking up what he could, what remained of his best friend, shock beginning to set in, steeling his nerves and forcing his heart to start again.
All that was left was the drive home.
