Chapter 1: Arrival

Chapter Text

It was late.

“I’m not sleeping with Reid” Derek said abruptly.

“Dibs!” Garcia called out, placing her hand on Derek’s.

Hotch was gathering his things and turning to leave with Rossi following suit. “Dave, we should get unpacked, and we can go over these extended files.” I want everything sorted by morning. Emily and JJ should almost be done and we can..” The pair were already headed up the stairs when Y/N realized she would be rooming with Spencer.

It was just the two of them in the sitting room, as JJ and Prentiss were right behind the older men, and Morgan and Garcia were chatting with Josh about local places to grab dinner.

Reid was sitting there lost in thought when you approached him. Placing your hand gently on his knee, you caught his attention. “Wanna check out the accommodations? I bet our balcony opens to a private pool!”

“Quantifying the impact of Alaskan climates..”

You accidentally interrupted Spencer’s rebuttal with a chuckle before lightly punching his shoulder.

“Ahh, you’re messing with me.” The genius realized.

“Only a little.” Y/N smiled and Reid immediately mirrored her facial expression. “Come on, it can’t be worse than that motel in Michigan. Let’s see what we got”

It was getting late, and you were relieved to have packed so many snacks in your go-bag. You didn’t want to head out with the others, you wanted to get some sleep. Finding it difficult to rest on the plane, you spent the flight pouring over the extended files with Spencer. You couldn’t keep up with his rapid reading pace, but he never let you feel inadequate in any way. It was one of the many things you loved about the young doctor. You couldn’t believe how different they were, how much more he had accomplished even though you had been on this earth for almost the same amount of time. You were quite the over achiever, but felt like such a novice in his presence. Reid’s profiling skills picked up on that immediately, despite your best efforts to hide it.

To your surprise, it was he who comforted you when you didn’t feel like you were on your A game. When you felt less than during a team meeting or in the field. Determined to hide your faults from the rest of the team, you let Spencer see through the cracks in your armor. He made you feel safe.

The two of you had become close as the rest of the team paired up according to common interests and schedules. You weren’t one for crowds or clubs, so when you ventured out to quieter venues, it was Spencer you found most often at your side.

A few months after getting to know the young doctor, you found yourself longing for more time together. He was such a passionate speaker, although often silenced by every other person around, you couldn’t get enough of whatever factual anomaly he happened to be presenting. The inflections in his voice and his passion for knowledge were his signatures, and you were hooked.

You and Spencer carried your bags up the stairs but Reid was dragging his feet when approaching the door.

You turned to face him, but he avoided eye contact. “What’s wrong Spence? Is it the cold? Don’t worry, I have 4 sweatshirts I don’t mind sharing.”

“I’m sorry.” was all he offered before meeting your gaze.

“What ever for?”

“Your having to room with me. You heard Morgan.”

“Morgan was just joking” You responded

“And nobody disputed. Some joke.” He looked defeated. His head slumped down to angle the floor. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out the room key and handed it to you. You unlocked the door, and turned the handle.

Pausing before pushing it open, you offered up a little secret you’d sworn you’d never say aloud “This worked out for me, rooming with you was my first choice.”
